I think this suitcase is great. I'd use it with a backpack as a personal item and just turn the backpack 90 degrees so that the straps become the 'trolley sleeve'. It would then fit on top of this suitcase. Problem solved!
I like that. My backpack has a sternum strap that might also work if I wanted/needed to keep the pack upright for one reason or another. Probably not as secure as both straps on its side, but an option
Great review Lauren! I may be wrong, but in terms of the packing interior, I suspect the wide handles would be most beneficial to people who pack directly into their suitcase. For people who use packing cubes, you are already packing onto a flat surface so you’re not having to figure out how to pack around the handle bars on the floor of the bag anyway. And so long as you bought the right packing cube sizes for the bag you’re using and you’re not overstuffing those cubes, the cubes just sit on top of the handles and you never really notice the ways in which the bars might create challenges for packing that side efficiently. But if you like to pack directly into the suitcase and are trying to maximize every single usable cubic inch of interior space, I think the wide set handle bars would likely help a lot with that. Anyway I’m super interested in the bag, but I’m going to wait until cincha and other brands develop good straps to attach personal items and see if they’re just as secure in attaching a bag to the wide handles before I buy it. I’m interested to see if a belt along would be enough or if the “back support” provided by the narrow handle bars is important to stability!
One more thought. I’ve seen some diaper bags which look identical to many personal item bags but which have two special Velcro straps to attach the bag to stroller handles. That might solve the issue of managing your personal item with this bag.
I kinda like this. I’m backpack girl for my personal item so I’m already wearing it. This might make navigating narrow streets and trains easier. 🤔 great review! It’s awesome to see you review some brands that I’ve never heard of before.
My last Europe trip I took using IT New York carryon. I was looking for a roller bag that was super lightweight. That bag weighed barely 4 pounds which fit the bill perfectly. Very little structure but that was fine since I knew I was going to have to manage my bag up and down several railroad stations. The previous trip, those multiple staircases practically defeated me with my prior 7.8 lb travelpro 22” suiter. The lack of structure suited my packing style, but the wide handle was a hard no. There was simply no way to attach a personal item to the case in a way which didn’t mess up the weight distribution nullifying the light weight. This piece is gorgeous and packing the inside will be simplified minus the handle bumps, but I think the wide handle won’t work. After you actually use the bag through airports and difficult terrain, I’d love to get an update.
That’s interesting. Did you find the bag itself was unstable or just the personal item perched on top of it? Because if it’s the former, that’s counterintuitive and I wonder if that’s an issue with the overall bag construction and not just the wide handle. Wide handle bags are generally *more* stable on their own, not less, than bags with the more traditional narrow handles. The wider handle puts the force from your pushing the bag along side you to the back of the bag instead of from the middle the way a narrow handle does, and that makes it much less likely to tip over when moved over uneven surfaces.
@@xqueenfrostine the bag itself was fine. Perfectly stable. It is just that there was no good way to manage the personal item. Back in the 90s when I routinely traveled for 4-5 day formal business trips, bags generally had a hook or strap which connected to the top of the bag which held the briefcase or whatever by the item’s handle in front of the carryon. There was no need for the item to sit on top the bag. In another comment, I mentioned a personal bag type which could hook around the handle sides. That would probably work. I’ve never had a problem with any carryon by itself on rough surfaces. Since then, I have bought another IT brand bag that weighs just over 5 lbs with the narrower handle that I can use with the trolley sleeve. It works perfectly.
I am excited about the extra wide handle. I typically don't travel with anything that has a trolly sleeve anyways. I could always lean it against the handle if I don't want to put my personal item on the floor.
This bag seems very useful when you need both surfaces to be as flat as possible, and I can think of many of my trips when that was the case. There are also some personal item bags (whether totes or even backpacks) that do have wide pass-throughs and could go very well with this. In fact, this kind of handle could even be better for them. Thank you for the review, I will certainly look into it.
Thank you so much for this video. I totally understood about the handle... i've been searching for a easy rolling suitcase that rolled with ease and the way you explained it was so good.... i struggle with pushing the handle and a delay in the bag following.... gonna buy this bag b/c of your video.. thank you !!!
I just ordered this for my daughter what will be going on her first solo trip with her communications class. Love the color scheme as it will match her travel backpack. I hope it will last through college! Thanks for the in-depth review. Orders the Hays Airlite for my younger daughter so she doesn’t feel left out 😅
Finally came today. This thing is GORGEOUS in person. I would have never known about this bag had I not stumbled on your page looking for Beis reviews. Your reviews are the best I’ve seen and keeps me coming back for more. Is this the new woman’s version of a mid life crisis? 😂😂 all jokes aside, thanks again and keep up the great content!
The celadon and pink are beautiful! My husband and I have been wanting to get a set of matching luggage once and for all, that we can both use, lol. We have a 26” Monos, and I feel like there is a lot of wasted space. I can’t wait for my Level8 to arrive! The wide handle is what sold me. I can’t stand those narrow channels of wasted space! I have children who love to help move the suitcases, so I think the wide handle would be more stable for them. I wish the zipper was the same color as the darker color, the way Monos blends in their zipper color with the luggage color. I’m shocked that they didn’t come out with personal items with a wide valet handle when they came up with the wide handle. But I would think that is coming very soon! Honestly every time I slip my bag over the handle, it tops the suitcase over or gets stuck on the people mover, lol. What exactly can fit in the wet compartment? Honestly it looks too small to be functional!
Thank you for reviewing this one! I was agonizing between this one and the textured and I got the textured because it's just a tad narrower and I didn't want any issues with international sizing, and because I wanted the option to put my backpack over the handle. I thought that the wide handle gives a lot more space for packing especially with the cubes - normally I have to pack with the cubes on the opposite side that doesn't have the handles because if not, I'm losing some good space by placing a packed cube over the area where the handles are. But you demonstrated that it's not such a huge thing, actually. I think if one is using smaller size cubes to fit in between the handle bars, and then using the space on the sides to put shoes in, etc, it might end up saving a decent chunk of extra space. It really probably just depends on how many cubes you are packing. If you're using the handle size not for cubes but for other items, it may also be an advantage because you're not having to fit miscellaneous size items into the narrow spaces between the handle bars. I think the wide handle makes the bag more sturdy and better balanced. The wide handle is great but not being able to put a bag on top of it is a deterrent. However, it actually just occurred to me that you can buy a luggage belt that extends long enough to go around the handles and can secure your personal item to the bag that way. Or, a belt with a hook on each side to secure the bars of the handle bars. Either way, a workaround can be found (I wonder if Level8 may not start selling those!). I'd love a comparison of all the Level8 luggage you have and / or a comparison to other bags, if you need video ideas - I remember when you first compared Level8 to other bags, the weight on their site was listed as 10lbs when it's actually around 7.6 lbs and that sadly meant you didn't include it as an option in your "best bags" category.
I think the wide handle is good for harder things being packed that won’t fit in the smaller channels left by the narrow handles. Like some larger shoes, or some electronic items. If you are just packing softer items and using cubes, it probably won’t matter much. Personally, my shoes are big and they don’t fit in the channels so they take up a huge space which is why I’m interested.
I was waiting for this review because i am curious about that handle. I was concerned about being able to put a personal item on top, guess a cinch belt would be a solution. Yellow would be my color choice to match my fave NFL team. The only thing it doesnt appear to have a grip on the bottom. Thats a feature I prefer, not a deal breaker but I really like it. All in all I dont if the wider handle makes a difference in packing. Us carry on only folks know how to utilize the space in between if we need too. What would sell it for me is the stability it offers and the cool colors are stylish. Great review! You have the best luggage reviews.
I bought the regular one and it’s a decent suitcase. I thought about the wide handled one but didn’t feel it was worth the extra money, another drawback is that most trolley straps will not work with the wide handle.
Have you tried it in any overhead compartments yet? My level8 textured fits, but this voyager is 15.1 as opposed to the textured's 14.5. I'm really liking that wide handle. Thanks for the review.
I haven’t traveled with it yet, honestly due to the size and my strict airlines recently. I would just put it face up instead of on its side, if possible.
I bought my first hard shell bag a few weeks ago (July Carry On Light Expandable) and will be traveling with it next month. I think I want to make this one my second one (I love this bag so far). But I’ve got to see how this first trip is gonna go😳 wish me luck
Will the dimensions of this bag work as a carry-on? I have this bag in the 26 and love it, just used it on a month long trip to Europe and it was great. I purchased the royce and Rocket carry on prior to the trip and it's a beautiful, well made bag but the shelf feature did not work well for me and the level 8 bags are currently on special sale so I'm tempted to pickup the carry-on before my trip to Paris in a few weeks flying Delta.
You just use a backpack for your personal item or a j hook and wide handle issue is solved:) I actually prefer j hooks over personal item on handle as it is easier on the elbow.
Question for you! I'm travelling around Europe from US for the first time in a few months. When booking my flight the total weight for personal item and carry on is only about 26lbs. Do you know about what your luggage weighs in general with the light packing? I will be following all your packing tips to hopefully be under the required weight limit! Thanks :)
I travel with a lot of gear and electronics, so it varies. I can say, not every airline actually weighs, even though it has its “allowances”. Which airline is it?
I would put as many of the heavy liquids or electronics, like phones, tablets, chargers etc in my coat pockets, and remove when seated. They don't search our pockets or weigh your coat. Yet...
I’m considering purchasing a level8 carry on and wanted to compare the luminous textured and the voyageur…which bag has a more robust telescopic handle? I know the wider handle drives well, but which handle seems more solid to you? Thanks in advance!
They both seem the same, to be honest, when comparing those two, the biggest difference is the size. The voyageur may be too big for all airlines, whereas the textured is a good size for all of them.
I dunno if anyone's asked this before, but is the Level 8 Voyageur Carry-on viable to actually BE a carry-on when travelling internationally via Eva Airlines? Has anyone ever brought them on-board and stowed it in the overhead lockers, or are they too big?
I haven’t tried. I’m sure it would fit, as it’s a long flight and the plane is huge, but sometimes it’s what the airline allows, and this bag is a tad big for international sizing.
I watch all your videos and my goal is carry on only. I’m not there yet and am getting ready to order a new checked bag. I’m leaning towards Level 8, this model. Please provide your thoughts/recommendations! Also looked at Monos and Away since I already have the Away carry on?! Thanks!
Hi. In response to your question re: Saudi, I was 16 y/o when I went. I’m now 59 y/o. My dad was an Arab and a professor so I was officially invited. It was a fascinating experience, once in a lifetime. I stayed downtown in my dad’s apt complex. I wasn’t always treated well by strangers but the people I met through my dad were lovely.
Hi Lauren. Thanks for a great review and comparison between the narrow and wide handle features. My questikn is what are your thoughts on the complete lack of compression in this bag. I would think thay having the wide handle, that little extra bit of depth AND compression would be an amazing packing advantage. I would love to hear your thoughts.
I’m basically on team “cover one side” whether it’s compression or zippered covering. I do prefer compression, but all of Level8’s bags are set up similarly to this inside, and they are still great to pack with. I actually packed this one in my packing video this week (two climates) if you want to see the example :)
@ItsTheKellys I just watched it! Lol. Great video. I am looking forward to the second one, too. I love the color of the Level 8 you used. I love the two tone design.
Because level 8 bags are covered on both sides, I still enjoy it. It’s true that I love compression a lot more, but this is my second choice for interiors. The x strap is the worst
I love the idea of the wide handle but I’m not sure I’d be willing to give up the option of putting a bag with a trolley sleeve on it. Also, I am wondering why there is no compression on one side like so many others.
So far, level 8 hasn’t made any bags with compression. I’m hoping they will one day. I still love bags with interiors like this one, though. As long as there is no x strap
Yes, please see my packing example and close ups later in this video. You can see the poles at the very perimeter of the inside of the bag, vs down the middle
@redhatbear1135 you can see it close up at 10:34, compared to the normal handled bag. It shows how much space it takes up. They are inside the bag, right along the edges
@@ItsTheKellys That picture looks like uneven lining. After watching it 3 times I think you put your hands on both sides of the handle rather than just running your hand down the area like you started. I know such demos are difficult but I’m trying to justify the higher cost while hoping I can get 2 CPAPs, 2 batteries, a charger all in one side of the case. Ideally I’d like the case to meet most of the baggage restrictions so I’ll be allowed to carry it on as medical equipment. Thank you. I’m trying to replace my ll bean expedition luggage that is starting to fail. It’s also now slightly too big for some carriers. I do wish they had a way to put a lock on then though.
@@ItsTheKellys Actual because of the folds I can barely see half of one pole. They are much easier to “see” when you already know where they are, but that’s your brain extrapolating.
I can’t choose a favorite child. The one I will use for a trip will depend on my airline, where I’m going, and what I need to pack. All of them have advantages and disadvantages

My question is about ergonomics of that wide handle. Does it feel comfortable to pull after long periods of time?

I saw a thing called Cincha travel belt that wraps around your personal item and the bag handle, it looks like it would work. I think you reviewed it?
They are making a new wide one soon. They have a part that wraps around the handle to secure it, but it’s not wide enough on the original belt

You could go for this for sure. I do NOT suggest Away. But I’d rather help you pack carry on only ;)
@@ItsTheKellys 💯 I detest the X straps!
The recessed wheels seems to provide more room. I’m still a fan of two wheelers because so overall height seems to be wasted on 4-wheel suitcases.
I definitely need my suitcases to roll all directions. I can’t do 2. I don’t find it gives me any more or less space
you'd probably need to use the cincha for the personal item. that was the first thing i thought of when i saw that hadle
They are making a belt for wide handles! 💕
It looks like the wide handle is completely outside the case, at least from the outside. Is the space between the 2 poles useable for packing?
Yes, please see my packing example and close ups later in this video. You can see the poles at the very perimeter of the inside of the bag, vs down the middle
@@ItsTheKellys Actually I couldn’t tell, that’s why I asked.
Has this checked out : International size ? Tks in advance
It’s a tiny bit too big compared to the others out there. It’s about 46 linear inches
The link to the site to buy doesn’t seem to be active
Thanks! Fixed the URL!
Which luggage weight scale do you recommend ?
This is the one I have: amzn.to/3YH5gvj
@@ItsTheKellys thanks. I went ahead and put it in my cart. I hope you provided an affiliate link. It's not much but what the heck.. 😎
Please review the LUG BAGS.. LUGGAGE !!❤
I’ll reach out :)
What’s your favorite l
Carry on ? July?
I can’t choose a favorite child. The one I will use for a trip will depend on my airline, where I’m going, and what I need to pack. All of them have advantages and disadvantages
@@ItsTheKellys fair enough! I agree. I would like an expanding carry on so i can get more room in domestic flights and smaller for Europe
Wrap the shoulder strap of your bag around the wide handle, problem solved.
Love wide handles and zipperless only for me.
I personally won’t consider this due to the two colours.
The other colors have one tone all over
That’s what I like the best.
Had to say!! Behind you-- Ok 1:52 i notice your it’s the Kelly’s sign up which i’ve always loved❤️❤️❤️ Now the wedding pic too!!!! 🧡💜🩵💛 What a great way to honour your (not always behind the scenes) 😆😉 partner!!! 🎉🎉🎉 btw do you links work for you Canadian sisters??? 🇺🇸🇨🇦
