People think their income is their wealth. The more they make, the wealthier they think they are. I fell victim to that mentality when I was younger, too.
Just found out today that all the hard work I've been putting in means I'll be paying off my car loan two years early. It has nearly 10% interest rate, so you know how bad things were for me a couple years ago. I'm also going to be completely debt free by Christmas. My credit rating has been going up and up, but I don't care. I'm not going into debt again unless it's for a house. Even then, I'd like to put at least 50% down or I'm not doing it.
I always cringe when people post on social media " I worked so hard for this, I deserve this. I made it!" when they buy a new car from a dealer. They do not realize they just put themselves thousands in debt. They are so much worse off now than they were an hour ago before they bought that "God is so good" car.
Just started listening to Dave. I have a $173 car payment. My wife's car is paid off. My only other debt is my house, $2250 a month. Take home pay between me and my wife is $8000 to $9500 a month. We did the math and our total bills without including food is $3400. We have 3 months of emergency funds. Should I pay off the car now? I owe $8400..I just fianced it about a month ago. Wish I would of listened to Dave before I made that decision.
I bought cheap used cars for many years and would end up putting THOUSANDS of dollars in repairs. I got so tired of it. I got tired of being stuck on the side of the highway with a major mechanical problem. So this year I bit the bullet and financed a 2012 Honda Civic. It sucks having a payment, but I don't have to worry about being stuck on the side of the freeway anymore and I don't have to worry about my cheap Craigslist car overheating anymore.
I make $90K a year at the moment. The most expensive car I've ever owned is a $6K Ford Fusion that I picked up from a college kid who wanted to get a better car. Gets me from A to B just fine, handles really well and insurance is dirt cheap.
Look at older Buicks, grand marquis, Oldsmobile’s, etc. Often you can find them with 80k miles in great shape for just a few thousand bucks. A lot of older folks take really good care of them and you can get them for under 2k. It’s a great value! And they all ride like butter....

The only additional service we've every needed was for a dead battery (my fault for not changing is sooner). The lack of a car payment was the start line for the debt free life that I'm living now!
I sold my Toyota during Covid when used car prices were pretty high and added some money to that and got a new suv at sticker price! I needed that for my daily family use and that car is my Mercedes/bmw! 😅 I’m happy and that’s what all matters! Oh and I value my money a lot!
The only way a new car is worth it is if you keep the ride for over 13 years . Only if it's a good Reliable vehicle. I'm not talking about a Ferrari, Porsche or any expensive vehicle I'm talking like : Ford Chevy Dodge GMC Nissan Toyota Honda RAM If you keep it maintain for at least 13 years then it was worth buying a new ride. Buying new every 3 to 4 years is waste of money " I need new Reliable vehicle to avoid paying repairs " Look Buy new , keep it for at least 13 years If You like upgrades so often, buy used vehicle for under 5K every 2 years
I did the sums... It's cheaper/more convenient for me to catch an uber/public transport. After car registration costs+car insurance+annual fuel+the random traffic/parking fine you might get once/twice per year, plus actual parking expenses, plus the hassle of finding parking space at work/shopping centres.
I wish my parents had told me this stuff 25 years ago, but luckily I was a fast learner. I got coworkers old enough to be my kids and they think it normal to have a $600-800 a month car payment. Lose weight Dave, America needs you around for another generation or two🇺🇸

most people I know who are very successful individuals- Almost never bought their vehicles new. They usually paid cash for nice vehicles that were two years old or older.
I never understood the appeal of cars beyond transportation until my MX-5 soft top as a second car. It had been discounted because it sat on the lot for nearly a year. Paid cash for it. It was truly a fun driving experience. Then another driver rear-ended and totalled my main car and I bought a new V6 Rav4. That was 13 years ago. I’ve taken fab care of it, and used the original dealer (a great local business) for all servicing. What a reliable workhorse, still going strong. Looks almost brandnew on the outside. Its Blue Book value might be low now, but it’s priceless to me. Hope to get another 10 years at least out of it.
I had a car payment for one year when I was 23. After a year I woke up and realized my nice(ish) car was a huge waste of money, sold it, and bought a cheap reliable car with the difference. It’s been 8 years and I’ve never had a payment since, despite going through two cars. The key? Automatically set money aside every month into a separate car savings account. Some people say that’s the same as having a payment, but it’s not. For one, I’m not paying interest, I’m making a little. Second, if a financial challenge came up we could temporarily stop saving if we need that cash flow; with a payment you don’t have that option. And third, paying cash has forced us to live within our means. It’s the way to go. I’ll never have a car payment again.
Most people think they need and deserve a nice car and most can’t afford it. That’s killing their finances. It’s also a big reason why cars are so expensive-artificial demand.
Only time I had car payments was almost 30 years ago. Every car since then was paid for in cash. Some were beaters but they still worked. I saved up for months to buy my used Toyota in cash and am still driving it almost 10 years later. Going to drive it until the wheels fall off. I love not having car payments.
Was driving an 04 jeep liberty. Didn't have payments for about 3 years, but the jeep constantly was smoking, heater and air didn't work and seemed to have issues monthly. Semi bad decision, but got a new car and have about 10k left to pay. Working overtime and not going out or having fun until 2020
"Bond Buggy" made me laugh. :) I drive a seven year old Ford Focus, best car ever. I put in my time driving heaps, if I had to I would do it again. Whatever it takes.
Had the same car for 7 years, paid off my car loan in 13 months instead of 24. Best decision I ever made! Now I just gotta get everything else in line!
If you don’t like new techy cars then get a Nissan. It’s like a time capsule. We had a rental frontier truck for a week and the folding seat back latch was already broken. It had 50 miles on it.

I see my peers buying 15k cars while making $15 an hour part time thinking they can afford it because they are able to pay the down payment. Thank goodness I found Dave Ramsey before I almost made the same decision myself!
200,000-mile club where we at!?
On my way to the 300,000-mile club! Just about to turn 276K on my 2001 Mercedes E430. I paid $1,600 for it a little over two years and 40K miles ago and am loving it - repairs are manageable because I largely work on it myself.
I'm at 280,000 😄
Lol I just hit 200k in my 2010 Camry. It still drives like it’s new. Paid it off in 2014
Should be there in 30k miles more...
Just passed it recently!

What kind of car does Dave drive ?

Great car..my parents first car..fond memories. Me?..I drive a 2011 paid off Honda Fit..65 k miles.
Buy a used Toyota, pay it off in 2 or 3 years, drive it for 10. (They also are the brand that maintains it's value the most.)
They also have the cheapest repair parts.
This exactly what I'm doing. I have a five year toyota that I'm planning to drive for 10 years.
Smart Joe not the cheapest repairs by any means. But they are the most economical for the reason they rarely need a repair. And hold value. Parts can be pricey depending on year make and model
Toyotas are boring appliances. I buy American.

Just started listing to Dave and I have a different attitude on life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love that people buy new cars. This means that when I'm ready to buy a new car, I can just go ahead and take advantage of someone's depreciation.
Not anymore with used prices!
Just sold my Corvette Z06 and I’m so freaking happy that I don’t make that payment anymore. Thank you for waking me up Dave!
I always cringe when people post on social media " I worked so hard for this, I deserve this. I made it!" when they buy a new car from a dealer. They do not realize they just put themselves thousands in debt. They are so much worse off now than they were an hour ago before they bought that "God is so good" car.
Especially when it’s someone you know really can’t afford it 😢
We bought 2008 Toyota Highlander in 2011 with cash and it is still running strong in 2019. We are in baby step 6 now!
$18,500 for my escape at $273/month. Got about $9k left on it. Can't wait till it's paid off. Don't plan on ever buying another car.
Best advice ever, and old buick and grand marquis are so huge you get a huge and safe, great riding and reliable car
Jacob Rael for sure. Best kept secret of used cars. People might make fun of you, but then I just make fun of their empty bank accounts and your huge retirement savings!

Driving a 2009 Toyota. Spending about $2k in maintenance & inspections + tires every two years (about $85/month). The only additional service we've every needed was for a dead battery (my fault for not changing is sooner). The lack of a car payment was the start line for the debt free life that I'm living now!
I haven't had an auto payment since 2005.
you don't pay auto insurance every month?
I sold my Toyota during Covid when used car prices were pretty high and added some money to that and got a new suv at sticker price! I needed that for my daily family use and that car is my Mercedes/bmw! 😅 I’m happy and that’s what all matters! Oh and I value my money a lot!
The only way a new car is worth it is if you keep the ride for over 13 years .
Only if it's a good Reliable vehicle.
I'm not talking about a Ferrari, Porsche or any expensive vehicle
I'm talking like :
Ford
Chevy
Dodge
GMC
Nissan
Toyota
Honda
RAM
If you keep it maintain for at least 13 years then it was worth buying a new ride.
Buying new every 3 to 4 years is waste of money
" I need new Reliable vehicle to avoid paying repairs "
Look Buy new , keep it for at least 13 years
If
You like upgrades so often, buy used vehicle for under 5K every 2 years
I'll never buy a brand new vehicle again.... I will only buy used. New cars are expensive
The same can be said for laptop computers too. I've bought one brand new, and all the others I've bought 2nd and upgraded myself if need be.
'Paid off home mortgage is the new BMW in the driveway' I tell myself this every time I almost impulse buy something expensive.
It would be awesome if whenever dave mentions "That car" they would bring up a photo of it.

I wish my parents had told me this stuff 25 years ago, but luckily I was a fast learner. I got coworkers old enough to be my kids and they think it normal to have a $600-800 a month car payment. Lose weight Dave, America needs you around for another generation or two🇺🇸

"just put your mother in law in there" 🤣😂 done and dusted. Dave said I could! Hold on ma!
These rants works 😂😂😂🇬🇭🇬🇭. Folks here loves cars too. Even though we usually pay cash for them
I had a car payment for one year when I was 23.
"Just put your mother in-law there" lol 6:08
Most people think they need and deserve a nice car and most can’t afford it. That’s killing their finances. It’s also a big reason why cars are so expensive-artificial demand.
