It's been years since I had a car payment. The freedom, its beautiful.

Same here brother! I wiped out all my debt immediately by selling my $14k car to carvana and then buying a used Lexus for $4k cash. It’s been extremely reliable so far and the freedom is fantastic. One thing people also don’t tell you is that my full-coverage insurance is less than 1/2 of what it used to be too!!
I'm active duty in the navy. The majority of the people I work with buy 20k and up vehicles! I personally drive a $800 regular pickup I maintain my self and having been doing this for 4 years. Knowing that I keep my current vehicle for another 10 years will surely add up later in life. Live like a man.
Good for you! I am so pained by how many active duty military members I know or have known who sink up to their eyeballs in debt! I'm not an expert and I'm not perfect when it comes to money either, but I think I have identified a few key reasons why this seems to happen:
1. Many active duty military come from homes where money has always been an issue...so they suddenly feel very rich, especially with the sign-on bonus.
2. Most 18-24 year olds have brains that are still developing and haven't yet reached the cognitive level of thinking reasonably about major decisions (still influenced a lot by emotions and hormones)
3. Most car dealers near active military bases know exactly what buttons to push
4. Many active duty military are long distances from home and don't have much "rational" input about their decisions.
I'm not picking on active duty military, and of course there are exceptions (you seem to be one of them). These are just patterns that I have observed and think it would be helpful for every active duty person to hear about before they dive so deeply into debt.
As further evidence, there's a reason that laws have been passed in many states prohibiting payday loans to active duty military. It's the same thing...rational thinking skills are not fully developed in most people until at least age 24. It's hard to fight against your brain!
A household income of 44k... with a 35k car loan. What are these people thinking when they sign up for it? That's financial suicide.
I think people are so focused on monthly payments that they don’t consider the total cost.

XCVI Mac I feel the same way I will always buy a cheap car from now on nothing over 13k maybe even less then that doesn't matter what I can afford instead of driving a 40k truck and paying it off I'd rather spend it on kids college makes the most sense

Dave, I want to thank you for helping me to not make a huge mistake. I was job hunting, and during a 2nd interview with a potential employer, the interviewer happened to see me pulling into the parking lot. Towards the end of the interview, he told me I would have a 3rd and final interview with the owner, and warned me that the owner would not be impressed with my car because it would send the wrong message to clients. I was >< this close to trading in my '04 minivan for something much newer and "prettier". Thank God I decided to borrow my neighbors truck for the interview, because the day of the interview I received a call that the position had been filled. I am still debt free, except for my house, because I was too afraid to be one of your callers seeking validation for my stupid life choices hahaha

my friends spent 110K last years bought two brand new lexus. i told him why not to buy a use one around 2 years old and save 40%of the money but he argued with me used car is bad it will break down blah blah blah..i just stop the conversation with him....

Every time I get the itch for a new(er) car, I watch this video. Also, every time I get in my 2006 Chevy Cobalt (130,000 miles on it), I think about the money I'm saving. My car still looks good and there is nary a speck of rust on it. I will keep driving it until it quits.
Funny I got a Cobalt recently. Im lucky I dont goy yo worry about anything other than the insurance since the original owner owed my uncle car. Its his right now but after he gets a truck i basically get a car I just have to pay the insurance for.
Friends i know are talking too much about getting the cars they want instead of what they need, which should be a reliable and cheap car you can live with.
The best but one of the hardest things I've done was to sell my truck. It was an '09 red Toyota Tundra, almost new. When I realized that if I sold it we could be debt free besides our home, I did it. It was tough to watch the new owner drive away, but I promised myself right then that one day I would buy another one for cash. It feels amazing to have no car payment, and the $4k replacement car I bought is just fine and totally reliable. The myth that a car has to be expensive to be safe and reliable is ridiculous.
That's not living though. You only live 60-70 years. Why not get what you want when you want?

@@caseythefalcon81 Uhhh... Well, you could end up like my mother who at 80 has outlived her retirement and has about $30K in the bank and SSI for a income of a whopping $1500 a month. Plus health issues. Not a fun way to live when you have to skimp and scrape like a 21 year old in your "Golden Years". But, she had some "nice things" 40 years ago, like a 401k she cashed in. That's why WE try to live debt free; to be FREE and not a burden on anyone else.

The price of new cars now days is unbelievable. If you sat down and figured up the total you spend on cars gas, insurance, repairs and purchase you would decide to ride a bicycle everywhere.

I just decided to buy used.
Bought a 2012 Chevy Sonic LTZ three years ago for $15k cash with 2 year full warranty.
Spent about $30/yr. for oil change and around $120 on maintenance so far.
Drive less than 200 miles a week.
Pay under $40 a month for gas.
Insurance is $980/yr.
Tax about $90/years and dropping annually.
So I pay roughly $1700/year to fuel,maintain,and insure my car. That's less than 3 days pay for me.
I traded a stock to get the money to buy it.
Never thought of a bicycle. No issues.
Always garaged.
Just point a to point b.
Been putting money aside for my next new used car in a few years.

i paid $800 for my 92 chevy work van and its the most reliable vehicle ive had. no way am i paying 600$ a month for a new truck. i paid off my 08 f150 last year..that loan taught me to never get another loan again...bank ripoff

And I've never financed car, and I still drive my 2006 Mercedes C55 AMG that I bought new in 2006 paid in full with cash. Yes, it's possibly to drive a really really nice car without a payment. Just start saving.
I'm a petroleum engineer major and I will be starting at $150k a year. I don't see a problem with a $800-900 car payment. While I save up to pay it off. I'm not gonna wait 2 years to buy the car that I want.

I just love how over the course of these phone calls, the caller tells Dave the main debt problem, then Dave recommends a strategy, then the secondary debt problems get divulged.
I've always bought my cars cash and it not that hard to save I would put $500 a month away and you know how much that equals in a year that's $6,000 and in 2 years that's $12,000 and in just 3 years $18,000 just saying.

I crash is not enough for a car. So the most basic insurance that I can get and still drive is what I have. They were charging me crazy amounts for a really old toyota, it's insane. I have also never had an accident or anything like that, that would give me such high rates. These car insurances are out of control. I have a clean driving history and not young either.

When I bought my small one liter suzuki celerio. Everyone thought I was crazy, but it is the best car decision I ever made. Its extremely light on fuel, the insurance is cheap. Its now out of warranty, maintenance and service plan. But its so cheap to do a service and buy parts for it. The model and brand has been nothing but strong and reliable. My little car makes me happy financially, I will keep it till the doors fall off.

My favorite story is a car salesman told me about a dental assistant that had purchased a new Dodge Challenger. I asked "how can she afford that expensive of a car on a low wage salary?" He replied, "she lives at home with her parents so didn't have any bills and the payments were her only bills." I guess some people would rather live with their folks and have a nice car than have independence.

I drive a 1998 old small car I bought for $900, 8 years ago. Spent $800 in maintenance. I drive conservatively and it costs me $70 a month to keep it going i.e. petrol/taxes/insurance etc. It's smelly and dirty but I LOVE my car because it is a testimony to financial wisdom!

I drive an unattractive $3,000 Toyota corolla with a heart of gold! Own it outright and could easily pay cash for a new car, but put money into savings, index funds, and retirement.

So yeah this is 100% truth. My husband and I got 2 cars either new or almost new and we pay way too much on them. It is very difficult making payments on time for either of them and hurts our ability to pay other bills as well. Dont buy new cars you cant afford!

$609 for the loan payment, and then tack on the $200+ per month for the full coverage insurance. It turns into a money pit in no time at all.

Every vehicle loss value but my 99 Honda Accord is still going strong in 2020. I’ve saved 21000 for the past 5 years just for a car I’ll probably get a rav4 or crv and drive for the next 10 years. Ppl need to stop driving car to impress others. I be cruising on my old car debt free and happy.
True. My 10 year old Toyota RAV4 is worth almost $10K. I paid 17K for it 5 years ago but I think that’s a pretty good hold on value. I’m still gonna hold on to it for another 5 years (hopefully) and then buy my next car with cash.

I convinced my friend to buy a $2,500 2002 Honda Civic w/128k on it. He was planning to buy a cheaper used BMW which would have likely turned into a nightmare. I project that he will be able to sell the Civic for little to no loss when he graduates College. Do your homework. Hondas and Toyotas retain value because of the perception of their superior quality. They are also cheap to maintain and some are good on gas.

+Bob Hannah Great comment and I totally agree. I am the original owner of a 1999 Toyota Solara. I am still driving it today. It has 202,000 miles and drives pretty much like it did when I bought it. I have been religious about oil changes but really haven't had to do much to it except the regular maintenance items. I've had people offer to buy it over the past couple of years but I can't part with it. I have no desire to buy a new or used luxury car and deal with the high maintenance and repair costs. By the way, I make a very nice income so I love it when people give me weird looks. I believe most of them are up to their eyeballs in debt and in my city leasing cars is the popular option. No way, no thanks. I'll stick with my Toyota. It hasn't let me down yet.

The idea of paying a note on a car for 5 years or more is crazy to me. I already hate the idea that I wi have to pay mortgage for 15 years. Atleast after that is over I will longer have to pay rent or mortgage again.
35 years ago I worked for a man who managed a small Ag-supply business. He had run the business since the early 60's and had raised 6 children and put them all through college. He never drove a new car in his life, and was always investing money in something that would pay a dividend, be it stocks, land, a small business on the side. He did have a company truck to drive daily back and forth to work so that saved him greatly, but he was frugal and always gave me great advice, one of the best being...
"A new car never made a dime for anyone."

Fantastic! We have had car payments (4 at the same time) up until 8 years ago, when the world come crashing down. Fast forward: We own a 1999 Pontiac Gran Prix we purchased at an Auction for $5,000 8 years ago. We have spent roughly $7,000 over the last 5 years: $1,400 a year, $116 a month average cost of ownership. $147 a year in registration, $672 a year on insurance. All on our Every Dollar budget. Easy.
We have looked at new cars every time the repair bill is $1,000 or more, but, this Gran Prix is in very good shape and it just is a please to drive! Fully loaded and we just cringe every time we look at a $500 a month car payment! Thank you God and Ramsey Solutions for staying the course!
We are basically driving a refurbished 1999 Gran Prix GTP supercharge 3.8L V-6 fully loaded bad boy, it even has heads up display! The last thing on the list is Rack and Pinion, power steering pump and we are on into Baby step 3 & 4. (Skipping step 5, kids are grown)

I sold my car and got on my bicycle and cycled a round trip of 44 miles to and from work. I saved a ton of cash and lost weight. It's my personal gym and never get athletes foot! I live in the UK and apart from sometimes getting soaking wet the weather is mostly ok. Americans sell your cars get on your bike and lose the gut!

Used cars are cheaper to buy and operate (I only buy Toyotas from 2000s , newer ones are not reliable enough)

What Dave doesn’t realize is a lot of us goal isn’t to be millionaires most of us know it’s unrealistic but are okay with making 60-80K a year. So making payments on cars and other things is okay. We make payments and still money in bank goes up every month. It’s okay. Not all of us need to pay cash so we can be multi millionaires. That’s all. Love the show though.

the only vehicle to go up in value is a classic or soon to be classic.i can tell you that because i own one.not a crazy car by any means but its worth thousands more now than what i paid for it and stuck into it and is true with a lot of classics out there.

I know with the Air Force they will not allow airman to move out until they hit 3 years in service (or marry). I see it too young military guys buying the most expensive car they can afford to make payments on. I made the same mistake.
I'm thinking that if you want to build wealth you should only spend 5% of your annual income on a car. When you get some money in the bank maybe you can go to 10%

You know what's really destroying wealth in America? The ASTRONOMICAL cost of healthcare. If it's not the high premiums it's the outrageous amount of out of pocket costs you have to pay befor your insurance even KICKS IN! Want to accumulate wealth? I got a solution, don't get sick or better pray your company has good health insurance.

If he's military, is he living on base? He should consider seeing if there is cheaper housing off base that will allow him to use some of his BAH to get out of debt.
Update: My Chevy now has 135,500 miles and it's time for me to give it up. It has developed front end issues that will cost nearly $2,000 to fix. And my car isn't even worth a third of that. I talked to friends and family, and they said, "It's time. Get yourself something else.". I'm not sad about it, I've had Ashley (the Chevy) for twelve years.

I am a fairly recent millionaire and I just bought a truck. A 20 year old truck. $3,000 for the truck and repairs to make it safe. I will never buy a new truck or car ever again.
I am a millionaire because I bought a $3,000 truck. I am barely a millionaire. A $50,000 truck is too expensive. If I manage to make another million, I will consider a $50,000 truck.

I am just saying that with 1 million dollars u can EASILY afford a 15k truck not 50k. a 3000 dollar truck is a peice of junk. if u just could care less than ok thats fine, but if your sacrificing yourself and not getting a better truck just to save a couple extra thousand when u already have a million is ridiculous. i am not a millionare by the way or even close but am not broke.
I do have a 2011 car. The $3000 truck is temporary. I am using it to haul some junk. I plan to get rid of it before the end of the year.

And that is why you don;t have a million dollars. Like Dave Ramsey said, anything with a motor looses money. Even though I am a third generation atheist, I know Dave Ramsey's knowledge about finances is universal, not biblical.

look at toyotas and lexuses. they will cost 2 times as much as old 1998-2006 fords, chevys. the reason cars like mercedes,bmw and ford drop so much in value is because repairs get so expensive on them after high mileage.

I'll do a consumer proposal for getting out of my car payment and credit card debt. I know that affect my credit score for couples of year's but it doesn't matter. I want move forward and keep my INCOME.
I bought a ‘15 Lincoln Mkc 2 years ago and I’ve only paid it down to 20k and the original loan was only 26k! The interest rate was higher than I thought but and that’s what killing me. Planning on refi at a credit union. Just Pd off my c/c so I’m waiting for it show on my credit report so my FICO goes up = lower interest rate.
I'm looking at a used Honda CR-Z for $8-10k that's a hybrid and good on gas rather than brand new -insert car- that would be $20k-50k.
