Absolutely love your recipe, instruction and love of the drink! I bought a smoker from a work shop and love using it for our drinks, cheese crackers etc. Going to do your drink tomorrow, many thanks!
I've tried making both of these and they came out perfect. It's been about 6 months now and I make them this way every time. Thanks for a great OF recipe. It's perfect.
Great video! I've been experimenting with different variations of the Old Fashion. Something I tried I found worked well was making a brown sugar simple syrup and then I smoked the syrup. Gives the beverage a nice caramel smoky flavor.
I have been making and smoking my own for awhile, but you taught me something by smoking the ice! Fantastic. I like to spritz the glass with absinthe before I smoke it seems to help the smoke stick to the glass...it’s an Improved Whiskey Cocktail, I guess at that point
What are your thoughts on other whiskeys like Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve or Knob Creek for an Old Fashioned? I've tried those and even did a mixture of 2 or all 3 and it came out really good. I also use an Italian Wild Cherry like Longorn steakhouse uses in their signature Old Fashioned and they have a very unique flavor. Thanks again for the great video!!
The possible whiskeys to use are endless and will greatly influence how the drink tastes. Old fashioned is all about the base spirit. Blending is fun to do also !
LOL! Exactly what I was looking for. Gonna go practice this now. BTW.. Love the dedication and humor on this video. Ignore the haters.. you sir must be a blast to hang out with.
Any creme brulee torch will work, amazon has tons of different brands. I've had a couple leak fuel though so I'd recommend paying a little more than the lowest price range
I see now there are other comments on the types of syrups. Whatever your tastes are I think we can all agree the muddled orange and cherry is the best way to ruin a good old fashion. Terrible waste of a good bourbon.
I love it when my bartender constantly licks his fingers while making my drink 3:01, 3:26, 4:24. Lol jk I know hes making it for himself. I like the smoked old fashioned.
Just a solid wooden board is fine. Even a small cutting board. The wood chips you can find at like... home depot or lowes in the grilling section. Cheers
Curious if using a dash of liquid smoke would suffice instead of having to smoke wood chips. Making a smoky version of this cocktail in an apartment could set off some alarms if not careful. With liquid smoke, I may be able to bypass the actual smoke. Thoughts?
Not sure about liquid smoke, that's some intense stuff. This particular method is very minimal for actual smoke created. If you were to use a smoking gun like a lot of bars do, thatd probably set off an alarm
One of the best (unsmoked) old fashioned recipes I've experienced. Love the clarity and taste of the drink as you made it. Anxious to try the smoked version... sometime when my wife isn't paying attention to what I'm doing in the kitchen....
Fabulous 10 year old Bourbon - such good, intense flavour that doesn't lose flavour as the cocktail dilutes, if it is being sipped slowly and that is so important! Great bartender, lots of knowlededge. I love "it's very spirit dependent!!!" It is so true! Great bitters - love orange and Angostura! 2 beautiful ounces of Bourbon is fabulous and so delicious! I love this cocktail!! :-) Yes, stir! No shaking or anything else - just stir - right on!!!
guns usually produce a boatload of smoke. I've never worked in a professional environment with adequate ventilation to use them without freaking out guests. But in the right circumstances sure they are very effective at imparting it
The Negroni, The Boulevardier and The Old Fashioned have all become huge faves!! I love fine wine and excellent Gin! I am learning about really good Boubon and Rye. I never thought I'd like those in a cocktail!
Well done I love the smoked old fashioned I use the same bitter's as well.. my question does the luxardo cherries make that big of a difference I'm on the fence about buying them but I love to drink. For my spirits I've used Weller Green label Larceny and just enjoying one now watching your video using BarnBurner small Batch
@@drb808 thanks for the feedback glad you enjoyed it. a good brandied cherry plays delicious compliment to bourbon forward cocktails. absolutely not necessary though. for example, Death & Co's house old fashioned uses lemon and orange rind, without cherry. that being said, my current favorite cherry to use as garnish are called Griotte. if you type "amifruit cherries" into amazon you can pick up a legit brand. ice cube mold brand is "chillz blox", just type that into amazon. i use those molds both at home and the bar. Two pack for $16. Cheers jeremy
Nice cocktail. Agreed, simple syrup is better than a muddled sugar cube. You can also make the syrup from demerara or turbinado (light brown) sugar for richer flavor.
I’ve heard the smoke does a great job of binding to ice. What are your thoughts on a smoke chamber with burning wood chips, where the smoke bathes the ‘mouth up’ glass and its contents (sugar/bitters/large ice cube), adding the bourbon/garnish at the last? Love the video and the wink for no reason. 😄
Phil there are lots of different techniques that will garner more/less smoke character. Depends on what you're going for really, I personally base it on the concept i'm trying to achieve + consistency. for example we made this drink called Smoke & Agave where I wanted to really show off the oak chips i was toasting, so i lit a significant amount of chips and let it sit for quite a while covered on ice. that being said if i were to use a smoking gun on it there might have been some loss of agave representation from the tequila... shrug!
I love how dedicated this dude is. Cocktails can't be messed around / "everything goes" doesn't always work with cocktails. It's a precise chemistry and I appreciate it when the guides don't make it easy for the amateurs just because we're amateurs. I'm trying your non-smoked OF right now and it's amazing.
This is fantastic! I have seen a few that use club soda which did not seem right at all and I am not a fan of a muddled Old Fashioned. Thank you and I enjoyed the format. Cheers and what do you know I am drinking an Old Fashioned as I type!

I'm going to have to try that smoked thing sometime - looks delicious. I actually prefer the different textures in my Old Fashioned though, so I muddle turbinado sugar with bitters and sometimes an orange slice.
If you like gen and tonic use Hendrick's gen and cucumber to garnish it. They showed me that in Scotland and it's so good they sell a special peeler for the cucumber
Had Blue Danube playing in my head all day today, then I checked out your video. I can't escape it! I will try this. Thanks, my friend. I'm about to try Michter's Rye with 2 dashes of Bitter Truth Bogart's bitters and two dashes of Feegan's (Demerara gum syrup, citrus peels).
On the smoked old fashioned, I would recommend brûléeing an orange slice and adding to the drink instead of the peel. Just a little twist to add a touch more sweetness and smokiness. As a side note, black walnut bitters instead of the orange and angostura bitters is a delicious touch to the smoked old fashioned as well. Cheers!
I’m going to suggest a couple of things to take your smoked old-fashioned to the next level: 1) Substitute two bar spoons of maple syrup for the simple syrup (thanks to the How to Drink channel for this idea) 2) Dip a wet bar spoon into turbinado sugar (although any will do), brûlée it with the torch and stir into the drink. It won’t fully dissolve but that’s okay. You still get the flavor of the burnt sugar in the same way the smoke permeates the ice, and you already have the torch so might as well use it to explore the wonderful world of caramel and burnt sugar flavors.

Cheers Hugh! When I filmed this piece of shit video McKenna 10 was still affordable. That's changed but it's still a legit ass bourbon
How much of a difference does it make if you don’t add the orange peel ?
The large number of variations in such a simple cocktail are amazing.
Do you ever toast the orange peel?
Sure it's a neat trick. I'd recommend using a match, and let it burn for about 5 seconds so theres no sulfurous aroma expressed into the drink
