That basic old fashioned recipe is my go-to drink. The only thing I do differently is to use a quality maple syrup as the sweetener. I may get some backlash for doing that, but I suggest that every old fashioned lover should try that at least once before passing judgement. Cheers!
I agree! I personally am for folks using whatever spirit, sweetener, bitters, that suits their personal tastes the best! Maple syrup sounds delightful to be honest.
I’m hear for the great sound effects and subtitles 😂 love the content so far. Just made myself an old fashioned while watching old fashioned videos. Subscribed!
Kurt, I just discovered your RUclips site. Congrats! As a 75 yr young bourbon and Old Fashion lover, I have to say that over the years I have had very inconsistent experience with bartenders who truly know how to make an excellent Old Fashion. In all honesty, the very best I have ever had was at the bar of the prestigious Detroit Athletic Club (DAC). And since I was a guest, not a member, my dinner invitations are few and far between. In all honesty, I make a lousy one myself! But I look forward to putting your instructions to work. Thanks, Kurt.
I’ve never tried an old fashioned, but I ordered some bitters because I wanna try one. Once you put woodford in there it just made me happy because that’s my favorite bourbon
I like your videos! Please do these kind of videos more often. I’m new to bourbon collecting and love the information and the instructions for making drinks!!!
Perfect. I use the same recipe. I make clear cubes for my old fashions. It makes them very special. Rittenhouse rye is a favorite. Lemon twist rather than orange with rye.. Love your videos.
Kurt, I’ve just discovered your channel and LOVE IT! Great knowledge coupled with a sense of humor and family in the background is an instant winner. Thanks for the two recipes in this video.
Thanks for the video! Here's a variation you may enjoy: substitute the simple syrup with a 1/2 tsp of pure Maple syrup and substitute the orange bitters for several dashes of Fee brand Black walnut bitters... I think you would enjoy.
@Jeremy Albin i use pure maple syrup in mine as well sometimes instead. and diff bitters brands depending on what whiskey im using. I find the maple syrup goes awesome with a high proof rye. As well as orange and reg bitters. 2 dashes of each…Really rounds out the flavors and balances them well and takes away a little of the harshness and spicy rye note. I like 1 bada bing brand cherry as well in mine just because they are so delicious to have after lol
I just made my first old fashioned. 2 oz of ogd114, regular angostura bitters, about a half oz simple syrup and a maraschino cherry. I did not have any orange peel, but it was delicious! Way better than the on the rocks prepackaged one.
Gatta love the OGD 114, a cask strength bourbon for $24.99. I make mine the exact same way you do except I use orange bitters in place of the peel when I dont have an orange.
@@Frank-uf2vn On the other end of the spectrum, at94 pf Elijah Craig makes a good one that doesn’t hit quite as hard, but the oakiness provides a nice roundness to the drink
I love to see how different this video is from your style now, cracked me up. Any new old fashioned variations since this and any “best old fashioned bourbons”!
This is my absolute favorite cocktail! I like simple syrup, maple syrup, and don't mind the sugar cube. I use either regular Angostura bitters or orange.
This is a favourite cocktail!! Thanks for the demonstrations of the original way to make an Old Fashioned and your own version! They both look fabulous! Well made and oh, so delicious!!
I wanted to make an old fashioned one night and I didn’t have any bitters or Simple Syrup, so I used some “organic pure Maple Syrup” It’s Bitter and Sweet all in one and made an unbelievable variation of an old Fashioned!
I make mine with the first method. One thing I appreciate about stirring it first with ice is when I pour it over the large ice cube I make is that it doesn't crack the ice curb since the liquid is already cold. Pour all that in without icing it down first and you get cracks. Appearance, to me, is just as important as taste. :)
Woodford Reserve DO is my long-time favorite bourbon, but I’ve never even considered using it in an Old Fashioned (I typically use a higher proof bourbon). I’ll give it a shot though.
I use a slice of orange and squeeze it into the drink and then drop it in. Also a really nice Luxardo Cherry. A tiny bit of the juice from the cherry jar might also make it into the glass on occasion lol
Awesome video. Going to make one or two for my wife for Mother’s Day. Trying the first with Rittenhouse. The second with Woodford Reserve. Thanks for the content. It’s enjoyable watching your videos.
Love an old fashioned, going to try your honey version , like the big stirring spoon, I’m in the uk , wonder if I can get one here ? Great videos, cool bar , thanks for your helpful info. Cheers 🥃🥃🥃
I've watched this a few times and I love the editing & sound effects, adding the text below cracks me up! Great work! Kurt Ludington is not a professional bartender or have any time for that!
I made the honey old fashion for the first time last night. I really enjoyed it! Thanks for the videos. I’m learning so much. I am new to bourbon and haven’t ventured out past Woodford reserve.
Strongly recommend blending pecan praline whiskey with another mixing whiskey, and use black walnut bitters, make yourself a pecan old fashioned. Absolutely love it
Great video! Really have been enjoying your content lately. One quick tip for cocktails: you typically want to pour in your ingredients from least-to-most-expensive in case you mess it up. If you add way too much lemon juice at the end, you have to throw out some of your fine liquor; if you mess that cheap ingredient up at the beginning, no liquor is lost! Cheers!
@@slbdrinks I've been skipping all around since discovering your channel. Neat to see how your video quality/production value has gone way up over the last year, too. Keep up the good work!
I clicked on this one while sipping on some Woodford double oaked, neat. My second one became an old fashioned, with brown sugar simple syrup. I may have to make some honey simple syrup.
nice recipe. my preference, reduce the sugar by a third. 1 - 1.5 tspn is plenty. and replace simple syrup with maple syrup. Include orange bitters 2 dashes.
I tried both drinks and they're both pretty good, I think I prefer the first one a bit more though. Also, I used Willet's Rye instead of bourbon. Really had to laugh at the commentary on the screen. Great channel
I just found your channel and love it! I thought I was “bad” with my couple dozen bourbon/whiskey bottles in my basement bar! Well done sir! I keep my OF simple also since I’m usually using nice bourbons. Being a fan of Wild Turkey 101, I just picked up the Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof to try tonight. I saw that is your daily drinker on another video.
I was looking for a video where it used simple suyurp cuz that’s what I have I just happen to buy the burbon u used so it really worked out for me man oh man it’s really good honestly I wouldn’t measure anything so I was looking to make it the right way and ur Video helped
I middle one cherry in the bottom, instead of simple sugar I add good cocktail cherry juice from the jar I got the cherries from, orange peel, Maybe squeeze in on orange slice juice...
I like your Old Fashion recipe, it's almost identical to mine. No sugar cubes, simple syrup is best. One thing I like to do differently, because it's an "orange flavor" cocktail, is use Angostura Orange Bitters instead of the standard Aromatic Bitters. It gives a nice orange flavor enhancement.
Ya I am not a fan of the sugar cube because of the grit in the granules. If you let it sit long enough the grit will dissolve but by than the cocktail is watered down. IMO
I can say confidently that Angustura is the king of bitters. However, their orange bitters are very overpowering and make everything you use it with taste like “orange tictacs” if you’re going for that flavor so be it but I like to use Fee Brothers or Regans behind the bar. I feel the flavor of those compliment the whiskey and dont overwhelm the cocktail. Just my humble opinion. Cheers!
Great video with useful tips! What bar equipment are you using (beaker, measuring cup…)? I’m looking to upgrade my equipment, but Amazon can make it difficult these days to filter what’s good and what’s not. You’re stuff looks like what I’m looking for.
I use primarily Boston shaker tins, mixing glass with bar spoon, bell jigger (easier for me to see lol, hawthorn and julep strainers. Once you have this core grouping you can add peelers for garnish citrus press etc. Good luck!
I am just making drink for myself. I hate to use orange peel as wasting rest of orange or have to use it somehow. Is there good substitute for orange peel on old fashion? Thanks
The best syrup you can use is Luxardo cherries. Spoon out a cherry, put the spoon and cherry in the glass and pour the whiskey over the spoon to rinse the syrup off the spoon into the glass.
I liked the production extras, made it funny and interesting. As for old fashioned, how about: same bourbon, touch less syrup, orange bitters (instead of regular), mix with ice as normal, then add Luxardo cherry as garnish. Add orange peel also if you have it. Winner.
Also comes down to the proff of the whiskey. A low proff (under 90) a teaspoon of syrup is good, A 100+ proff 1/4oz or more may be needed to balance it out.
@@slbdrinks well, im pretty sure you've seen those little tin cans of the "old fashioned", so is there something like that I can create to put in my briefcase instead of having to move around with all that extra weight? I already carry a small 6oz flask with me but having something to create a little extra special wouldn't hurt...
Nice Old Fashioned Recipe. No muddled fruit is good. No cherry. No mashed cherry is better, so your drink doesn't turn pale pink. Put the orange in last - this is good. Keeps the drink pure. The one thing about the bitters and sugar cube as compared to the simple syrup is that the drink changes as you enjoy the drink over time. Whiskey Choice: You might try making the Old Fashioned with Makers Mark. Instead of sugar or simple syrup, I like a couple of bar spoons of Benedictine - its sweet so ya don't need much. Yes this is technically a Monte Carlo. I got this idea from a neighborhood tavern that used the Benedictine in their Old Fashioned's.
Thank you (and your wife) for your nicely done RUclips channel. We seem to be well aligned in our tastes when it comes to Bourbon, although my high limit is about $70 for a bottle and I do a lot of careful research before spending anything over $30. I am a 90% Bourbon drinker and 90% of that is neat. The only cocktail I mix regularly is a sugar-free Old Fashioned, since like a lot of men my age I need to manage my A1C. If you know anyone with Diabetes that also loves Bourbon here is my recipe: 4 oz good high-proof Bourbon (OGD 114 and Makers 46 Cask Strength work very well. It is a good way to use up the overly wooded Makers 46 Cask Strength) 2 Tbsp. Torani Sugar-Free Syrup 1 Tbsp. Water 1 Tsp. Orange Bitters (Angostura is OK but Fee Brothers is better) 1 Orange Peel Ice Cheers.
Could you make a sugar-free syrup with stevia? I never thought of using a sugar-free syrup in a cocktail, since I usually drink bourbon/whiskey neat or on the rocks. How does the Torani SF taste?
@@charitysteveboisseau5989 Stevia has a weird taste for me and would not be suitable. I think the torani syrup is as close to real simple syrup as you can find.
Hi Kurt, I’m learning to appreciate the Old Fashioned through your site. Regarding your bourbon choices, I believe you mentioned Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel 110 proof as your favorite for this cocktail. One time you said you regretted an expensive bourbon because the over-oaked flavor was offensive. But the double-oaked Woodford Reserve is not too oaky for you? Is Woodford Reserve Double Oak your second favorite choice for the Old Fashioned? If not would you mind sharing your second and third place bourbon choices? Thanks. Really enjoy your site!
The Woodford video was one of the first but I still do like it. I think the key is finding a 20 something dollar bourbon you can use for old fashions that won’t continue to break the bank. I love Russell’s Reserve but at the 60.00 price point it’s a spoil me moment lol. Lately I have been using rye whiskeys like Wild Turkey 101 rye. I like the way the Demerara sweetens the rye. Also, try a higher rye mash bill bourbon like old grandad 100 bonded. I think that mindset has been my favorite as of late.
I feel like if we hung out, I’d be the one hung over. I thought I drank responsibly until one video you said “a couple ounces lasts a couple hours” or something of that nature and I’m like duuuuuuude… if a couple ounces lasts you a couple hours how much am I really drinking 😅😅😅
I actually have some of the Bird Dog flavored Whiskeys and enjoy! I am not a whiskey snob whatsoever. I use some of the BD options as ingredients for different cocktails.
Professional bartender here. Just want to say I love your videos and enjoy all of your content. That being said, I’d say a half ounce of simple syrup is a little much for an old fashioned. 1/4 ounce is plenty. The double oak is sweet enough on its own. To each their own of course but I feel most people would enjoy an old fashioned with the bourbon being upfront . Also, ditch the store bought simple. You’re better than that! Cheers!
Wow how things have changed lol! Truly amazing how my palate and knowledge has changed due to good folks like yourself! I have a more current OF video available also where we use 2 oz rye and a Tspoon of syrup! I will take all the advice you can give Luke! Appreciate ya!
I recently purchased the Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters. Upon reading some reviews I stumbled upon a recipe that someone listed. Sipping it as we speak. 2 oz Bourbon. (I used Wild Turkey Rare Breed) 1 oz Simple Syrup .75 oz Grand Marnier Couple dashes of the Black Walnut Bitters I served it over a block of ice. Incredible cocktail. Have you had something similar? Definitely worth a try.
If I may give a few pieces of advice to the aspiring bartenders. The first recipe is spot on but when working in a bar, we always build the drinks with the cheapest ingredients first in case you make an error and have to throw it away. We also mount our hand at the base of the mixing glass so as not to heat it up. It looked like a very tasty old fashioned. Edit: 1/4oz of simple is good, half ounce is too much for most people.
Brown sugar cube. 3 dashes of bitters. Muddle generously into a nice paste. Add 1 teaspoon of water. 2 ounces of bourbon. Orange peel. Cherry. Place big square cube in. Stir. Enjoy
Drink what you like the way you like it! For me I find the cocktail a bit granular and by the time it dissolves it’s a bit watered down. I have only tried the cube once so maybe I should give it another go.

1 Tsp. Orange Bitters (Angostura is OK but Fee Brothers is better)
1 Orange Peel
Ice
Cheers.
Wow thank you so much for this recipe! You can’t go wrong working within your price structure for whiskey. Excellent thoughts!
Could you make a sugar-free syrup with stevia? I never thought of using a sugar-free syrup in a cocktail, since I usually drink bourbon/whiskey neat or on the rocks. How does the Torani SF taste?
@@charitysteveboisseau5989
Stevia has a weird taste for me and would not be suitable. I think the torani syrup is as close to real simple syrup as you can find.
Never have thought of that but I don’t see why not.
@@DoktorEvilMD , first of all, your name is awesome! I'll look out for the sugar-free syrup. My husband is a diabetic, so he will appreciate it.
I recently made an old fashioned where I subbed the sugar out for 1/2 oz. of St. Germaine and it was fantastic. Guess I'd call it a Monk Fashion?
Sounds great! Cocktails is all about tweaking recipes to make them your own! Just saw another recipe similar to yours but they subbed in Licor 43.
Damn that honey old fashioned looks good.
Faster is never better
I just watched one of your vid's and you are carving ice...
Had to re watch this 😅I’m making me one now but with old foster 86 proof
What’s you’re thoughts on bird dog whiskeys for a flavored whiskey?
@@slbdrinks quickly making my way through all of your videos. I’m surprised I missed that one. Can’t wait to check it out. Keep up the good work!
Agreed about the simple syrup, I guess that’s why the ”one sugarcube method” is the best (at least if you ask me..😉👍🏼)
Everyone enjoys a nice rub around. Thanks for the video.
Old Fashions are the state drink in Wisconsin however brandy is used instead of bourbon.
So I have heard! I have never tried an OF using brandy but I should!
You ever try wild turkey American honey in your honey old fashion?
Yes I have! Not for a while but it does make a great old fashioned!
I recently purchased the Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters. Upon reading some reviews I stumbled upon a recipe that someone listed. Sipping it as we speak.
2 oz Bourbon. (I used Wild Turkey Rare Breed)
1 oz Simple Syrup
.75 oz Grand Marnier
Couple dashes of the Black Walnut Bitters
I served it over a block of ice. Incredible cocktail. Have you had something similar? Definitely worth a try.
I have used black walnut bitters on occasion but never with the addition of grand marnier. I will def try that! Thanks for the heads up!
@@slbdrinks Your wife may like it too!
That would be a good thing lol
Awesome job Kurt! You don't muddle?
You know I have never tried to muddle a sugar cube or fruit of any kind in an old fashioned. Not to say that is wrong at all just preference I guess.
@@slbdrinks try "gourmet maraschino cherries". One and a slice of orange with SS, then add the bourbon. I had two last night. 👌👍
Sounds great!
Amazing!
I made your second recipe, made for a very good old fashioned.
Great advice here thank you! I have never worked in a bar so this is very helpful! Thank you!
@@slbdrinks I thought some people might find it useful. Cheers for the nice video. I liked the old fashioned shootout too 🥂
Hey Kurt,
Bärenjäger is an very populare Liquer in German, wie call it Bärenfang (Bearhunter). It ist with a lot of Honey.

Nice Video...Thanks!
Appreciate that!
Brown sugar cube. 3 dashes of bitters. Muddle generously into a nice paste. Add 1 teaspoon of water. 2 ounces of bourbon. Orange peel. Cherry. Place big square cube in. Stir. Enjoy
Love ur reactions - however every time I have had an old fashion with simple syrup it suxed- the cube is the way - why change this prohibition drink.
Drink what you like the way you like it! For me I find the cocktail a bit granular and by the time it dissolves it’s a bit watered down. I have only tried the cube once so maybe I should give it another go.
What's the shelf life of the syrup?
Hand made syrups will last approximately 4 wks refrigerated.
@@slbdrinks thank you. Love your show and especially the relationship you have with your son. I enjoy sharing a cocktails with my sons. Nothing better than family. Have a great holiday.
