I have always done the "poor man's" swing weight - cut lead to get to 8.4-8.6oz (my normal static weight) and then place the lead such that the balance point (using the edge of a table) is the same as my last paddle.
The challenge is that most people want a lower swing weight AND a higher twist weight. And head light paddles generally have lower twist weight. My wife, for example, wants a super head light paddle. But she doesn’t quite understand that she’s often mishitting balls that hit her paddle hard. She’s been reluctant to add weight because it adds head heaviness to the paddle, even when it’s just on the throat of the paddle.
Played with tonight, myself and friends used came very impressed with the way the paddle played and there concept of customization, tough to put down!!!
Good information on the use of lead tape. I found a lead tape setup that I like on all of my paddles. Depending on how light my paddle weighs out of the packaging (box/envelope), I usually add more or less lead tape to these areas. I made it to the kitchen.
My DBD 16mm is now perfection with lead at 4 & 5 + 7 & 8 o'clock respectively.. added stability/plowthrough without adding much (if any) perceived swing weight
Diadem Icon V1 has a very slim edge guard that doesn't overflow to the paddle face (makes it look edgeless), and is replaceable. They can make the replacements in different weights to adjust the performance of the paddle.
I have played for 3 years now and just recently added some lead to a new Vpro I got. I wasn’t crazy with the way it played. Referring to your video for proper placement, I added some gear box lead strips and wow what a difference! I don’t know why I was so intimidated about adding lead until now. The strips make it easy to add or remove. In the future I will always be open to adding lead if I think the paddle needs it.
Thanks Will, I've been on the edge guard vs edgeless rant myself for the reasons you mentioned. The edgeless paddles do look nice but I have no issue with the edge guard paddles, they are easier to modify and the edgeless models are normally sold at a premium. If you're hitting that close to the edge you're screwed anyway.
Have you done any experimentation with applying weight to the paddle, asymmetrically? In executing a shot if there is rotation of the paddle then, one side (for example .. the 3 position) will be moving faster than the other side (the 9 position). I believe it is true that: > swings are a combination of linear and rotational motion. And, added mass affects both > swing weight about certain axis is variable during the swing > axes change in contribution to rotation throughout the swing
i tried your advice on lead tape on my new gear box power and your right it opened up or made the face a bit more stable, but it limited spin potential greatly. the heavier weight was the reason i believe
Using your link to Just Paddles the Black Ace Pro and Black Ace Ovation Hybrid Middleweight paddle is 180$ as of today.... ( edited to say) Thanks so much for all your Black Friday deals research excel sheet---a ton of work that is much appreciated
Lead tape is a game changer, so many lives transformed by it. My wife did make me turn the podcast off on a car ride. Reasoning may have been related to someone’s voice but I’m ok with it.
You mentioned paddle fitting and that the pros gravitate to a certain range. What are the static weight and swing weight that the pro are gravitating to?
Drillpickle has a ball I’ve been using for indoor training that is on the track of where balls need to be. Buy one and try it out. Maybe this exact ball isn’t the answer, but some version of it is….yes, it would slow the game down, but I can still rip the hell out of this ball and even if I tagged you with it, you won’t get concussed or lose an eye 😂
Deep fried turkey 🦃 is the bomb! Best to brine the bird then deep fry. Brining gets the flavoring throughout the bird and to the bone. Very juicy too due the deep frying searing the skin, locking in the juices. Yum 😋 Alton Brown on the Food Network did a whole video on deep frying a turkey.
I'm curious as to how many points head heavy yours and Will's paddles are. For those not familiar, make a mark in the middle of your paddle; usually blue/scotch tape, and then at the point at which your paddle starts to tip off the edge of a table. For every 1/8" = 1pt. Every paddle I've ever owned happened to feel really good at 10pts.
As much as Gearbox PRO Power Elongated Pickleball paddles are. it would be nice to be able to pick the width and length of the handle when buying the paddle. BTW: how many 3 oz lead pieces of tape did you use on your Gearbox PRO Power Elongated Pickleball paddle to give it a good balance and good stability? And what lead tape did you use?
A sleeve that slips over the paddle to quiet the paddle would be good. That way, people can use any paddle or ball (God forbid we use anything besides Franklin X-40 at my club!).
I was unable to verify this claim. Owl Sport doesn't celebrate its engineering team by naming the members. Nor does their web site have much to say about the technology involved.
Did you got a chance yo try Prolite k K2 power? I remember you mentioned a while ago you received one and from the specs should be an interesting paddle, I am curious
I must respectfully disagree with your conclusion that edgeless paddles are inferior to paddles constructed with edge guards for the following reason. It is true that fresh out of the box, edgeless paddles inherently have less twist weight than their counterparts with edge guards. It is also true that the edgeless paddles has lower swing weight for the same reason. Based on this, it would be fairly simple to add lead tape to an edgeless paddle to match its swing and twist weights to its edge guard counterpart. The reverse is not true. That is, there is nothing you can do to a paddle with and edge guard to reduce its twist weight and swing weight to match the edgeless paddle. Based on this, the edgeless paddle allows a far greater amount of customization as by adding lead tape, you can increase swing weight and twist weight to any degree from stock up to and beyond the edge guard counterpart. For this reason, an edgeless paddle will always represent a better platform for customization than its edge guard counterpart. Therefore, the only potential disadvantage of an edgeless paddle is that it may require some tuning to achieve the optimal balance, but for anyone willing to do the tuning, the edgeless paddle will provide a better platform.
As kids we played basketball outdoors in the neighborhood, the ball bounced all day and kids were yelling, but that was acceptable. So why not pickle-ball?
DEEP FRIED TURKEY!!!! 👍👍👍 I use a rotisserie deep fryer and it’s off the hook. I have lead on my Vatic prism and it gives it a bit of punch. Thought about trying it on my dbd but it’s my go to and I play it well without it. My buddy can’t generate power and has it on all of his paddles. He swears by it. Chris try the deep fried turkey!! The juiciest white meat you’ll ever have.
Made it to the kitchen. Does Ed Ju know Chris’ kryptonite is mini muffins & Chomps?? 😂. Also have either of you tried Reset Pickleball’s Paddle Reset spray for cleaning your paddles?
Like your stuff guys. A few thoughts. How many man hours do you think it would take for a company to swingweight a thousand or more paddles? More involved than just purchasing an swingweight measuring device. Also, having been a custom golf club fitter it takes a considerable amount of time to do a good fitting. How much would you or anyone be willing to pay for a custom paddle fitting that may take 30 plus minutes? Not enough profit in a paddle to provide the fitting for free.
I would love to be able to measure twist and swing weight but the device is expensive so most people are stuck with measuring static weight and going from there.
$250 for an SW1, +$15 for a pickleball adapter is just one Gearbox Pro. Add $80 for a twistweight adapter. It doesn't seem too expensive for a paddle nerd who cares about swingweight and twistweight.
my sweet spot on my edgeless Gearbox Pro paddle is not as good as my DBD 14 mm paddle....that is a recurring theme in other players who have this GB paddle...tons of power and pop but the loss of the guard must do something, EVEN with weights added
Chris how much lead on your Gearbox Pro Power E? Have one coming next week. I use 3gram strips at 4&8. Hoping to find the right combination for my chronic T Elbow. Master Athletics has the weight insert system. That Owl caught my eye to. Looks like pool table felt. Gotta wear off fast. Pass for 170.oo I already have a VICE. Easier to make the ball for sound issues.
Would love to have you test the Owl. I was playing with Franklin's mini paddle for sweet spot training. It has 7.6 oz, has a T700 raw surface, and is surprisingly credible. It is VERY soft and my opponent complained repeatedly that he could not hear the ball hit the paddle. He want to hear it so that he can anticipate the shot better. By the way, how do you know that the OWL is not approved for tournament play? I thought if they approved it on the list, it would be tournament approved.
Any clarification with lead tape…they claim that lead tape increases the sweet spot…is this because the increase in twist weight creates more stability leading to a larger sweet spot or the perception thereof?
If it is not approved for tournament play, I won't buy this paddle. There is technically no regulation yet for the parks to not allow you using a regular paddle. I agree with you that it is quite dumb.
It means the paddle is not unibody or thermoformed, which adds power and solves handles breaking at the throat. Also, can sometimes mean that it doesn’t have a foam edgewall, which helps the sweetspot.
The “perfect paddle” out of the box is simply a myth. First, paddles vary out of the box. Second, optimization of paddle performance is personal and contextual. To refuse an opportunity to customize is just intellectually vacant. Finally, if you refuse to try it while criticizing it is just stupid. Harsh but I welcome any counter comments.
I've been playing with both the Thrive 16mm and 13mms for a review. Got the 13mm with a SW of 118 and the 16mm with a SW of 120. Very cool concept letting you select your swing weight and both are also very solid Gen 2 paddles with high tier spin. Would definitely be interesting seeing both of you meet the Thrive team

Curious Chris, I recently switched to the DBD 16mm and am experimenting with lead. What is your setup for your DBD placement and grams
Fried turkey is amazing, but I like spatch-cocked smoked turkey. Graphene is more like ceramic, super strong but brittle.
I did add .2 oz to the throat of my DBD. helped with drop shots immediately....

I bought the Ronbus Pulsar for $110 - thanks for that double tap coupon tip :)
We use Turkey bones to make Pho noodle soup 🍜 😅. It's so yummy 😋.
Couldn't the company that made the new 3D printed Wilson basketball make a slightly harder smaller ball for pickleball. This should be quite.
Fried turkey is great, but can be an accident waiting to happen if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I tried lead tape for the first time this week. Pretty big change for better but not total game changing or anything.
I have more success with the Luxx & no edge guard vs. My DBD 14mm.
Lead tape at 3 & 9 on both.

You both should do a video playing each other in doubles using a foam ball.
Bonus: have sarcastic humor commentary about the ball as you are hitting.

Deep fried turkey is legit

I don’t use any. Selkirk has a decent offering though.

Correct.

@PickleballStudio What's your go to tungsten tape? Could you give us a link to it?
There’s the Selkirk or Wilson 4 pack of strips or PB Effect I think was coming out with tungsten tape rolls

I've heard the reference "Gen 1 Raw Carbon Paddle" on this channel before. What does that term mean exactly?
It means the paddle is not unibody or thermoformed, which adds power and solves handles breaking at the throat. Also, can sometimes mean that it doesn’t have a foam edgewall, which helps the sweetspot.
@CohenAcademy my gen 1 Carbon of CRBN broke at the throat after 4 months of play 😢.
Are either of you guys able to review the Legacy Pro Air, please? Or at least test it and add it to the paddle spreadsheet?
They haven't sent any to reviewers. They said they are waiting.
Hmm I wonder why.
Does tungsten tape have the same toxicity concerns as lead tape? Or is tungsten generally safe?
Tungsten is the safe alternative to lead, non toxic.
@@yNotFPS they mentioned tungsten is heavier than lead for the same length of tape, so why isn’t tungsten just preferred anyways?
@@anthonyveltri6175the price most likely
It’s more expensive I believe
