He believes in his power to a fault, but he has the ability and he believes in himself enough to throw these punches from weird angles and he is willing to take one to give one and he has a great chin. But my point is, that right now heavyweight boxing is full of talent. And also, Mike tyson will always be remembered for his power, but he is criminally underrated as a boxer unfortunately. I think bam rodriguez can be a huge star, but the only reason I don't think it will happen is the fact that he fights at 115 pounds. . And wants to probably go back to 108 pounds. Teddy atlas is one of the greatest boxing coaches of all time, and a boxer and a boxing historian. So when its comes to boxing his knowledge of pugulism is almost unmatched. Hes a living encyclopedia of boxing.

He's right about that Max Schmeling / Joe Lewis second fight. Boxing during that time was more than sport. It was actually life and meant more than anything. Ironically Max Schmeling got a bum rap. He was german but the Nazi's used him as propaganda and he was not a sympathizer. He was a genuinely good person and they became friends later. HBO did a great documentary on all of this called Joe Lewis - a hero betrayed. Its excellent.

I've been a fan since I watched Friday Night Fights on ESPN back when I was a kid, him and Max Kellerman use to host the shows together. He always tells it like it is and his passion for boxing was one of the things that helped me become a fan.
I met him when i was 14 in brooklyn he was a guest event judge at the sunset park trails for the junior Olympics. He is a true walking legend. I met Hector "Macho" Camacho too he was incredible

I'm a bit of an oldie but my son who also loves boxing and is a boxer sent me this video and Teddy Atlas' assessment that Joe Louis was the greatest. Made me re-think. I do remember two things however. In the first Schmeling fight, Joe Louis' mother was in the front row and calling out to the referee in the 12th round 'Please don't let him kill my boy'! About the 2nd Schmelling fight, Nat Fleischer I think, owner of Ring Magazine said "No-one would have beaten Joe Louis on the night of the 2nd Schmeling fight".

I love some of his unique "Teddy Atlas" expressions...one especially stays with me: In describing a fighter's defensive skill in keeping his opponent at a distance, not letting the other fighter, an "in fighter," get inside. Atlas said of the defensive fighter's tactics something like "he's making his opponent fight his fight, keeping him outside, he's letting his opponent know that if he tries to get inside, he's gonna go through a 'bad neighborhood'."

Max Schmeling was not a Nazi. He became friends with Joe and helped him out financially when Louis fell on hard times later in life.

I fucking love Teddy Atlas. Seems every time he talks he manages to get to the very essence of life, of existence, of being. Sometimes the buildup takes forever but when he gets to the point, BAM, he fucking nails it.
I have a video I made about 5-years ago on my channel titled 'how great was Joe Louis'. I love the history of Joe Louis. Class act and the best heavyweight of all time. Muhammad Ali I put into a different class from every other fighter.
I love this podcast, teddy atlas has a real talent for expressing his passion. I love boxing more because of listening to teddy atlas on espn when I was a kid. I'm 32 now but back then I was a kid and I learned so much from this man about the sport and other stuff
Great video. I'm a Teddy Atlas fan, too. I love some of his unique "Teddy Atlas" expressions...one especially stays with me: In describing a fighter's defensive skill in keeping his opponent at a distance, not letting the other fighter, an "in fighter," get inside. Atlas said of the defensive fighter's tactics something like "he's making his opponent fight his fight, keeping him outside, he's letting his opponent know that if he tries to get inside, he's gonna go through a 'bad neighborhood'."
This dude could talk about air and I would be fascinated.
