Hey I’m new to collecting just got my first 100 books started a month ago, nothing super cool yet but I love your videos and have watched them non stop! Thank you for getting me into comics
What's you favorite book so far?
@@expensivecardboard there’s a few but the Rick and Morty pocket like you stole it series/ back to the future tales of Time train and Spider-Man 365 I got since the new movie
Just remember always buy stuff you like to read or look at don't worry about what everyone says to buy
@@CHAMPDOGZ thank you I’ve been loving the Spider-Man and back to the future the most
For current comics…Marvel=Moon Knight. It’s on issue #20. Strange Academy also is good. You’ll have to go into back issues, and the first print of #1 is very expensive for a new collector. You’ll have to pick up a later print.
For DC=Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. Great run so far. Jeremy Adam’s Flash run, which you’ll have to go back and get in back issues to catch up is good too. Zdarsky Batman (and Daredevil) have been okay.
Some other authors worth trying are Frank Miller, John Byrne, Alan Moore, Marv Wolfman, any art by George Perez, Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko obviously, Mark Millar. There are many more. Geoff Johns has been making some decent stuff too.
Great list the Peach Momoko Aliens #1 is a nice pick! Wolverine #79 and #82 from 1994 by Adam Kubert are both some favorites of mine.
Good choice!
All silver age Nick Fury books are off the charts! Stories are art were the highlight of the month.
The X-Men with Storm standing in the rain might be my favorite X-Men cover of all time. Also, X-Men 7 (90s) is a sick Jim Lee cover with Wolverine and Omega Red on the cover. X-Men 24 The Rogue and Gambit kiss cover.
I'm not sure if it's underrated, but Batman 686 doesn't get enough love if you ask me. The Alex Ross cover is so powerful in its simplicity. It's definitely in my Top 10 covers in my personal collection. Awesome video James!
Couldn't agree more!
I love Avengers 676 by Mark Brooks, with the hands holding the Avengers comic. Also always loved the Ghost Rider 15 Glow in the dark cover
Pretty basic and not much to it, I prefer something like green lantern 167 or ghost rider and cable servants of the dead. Even Batman 443
I vote all the Breyfogle Batman/Detective comic covers. Just stunning.
The artists capture the eye and the writers capture the imagination. That’s why comics are da bestest!!!!!
Another great list. So many great DC covers and those modern DC covers are beautiful.
Hey, thanks for giving (very) old pal Hugh Fleming a shout-out for Batman Chronicles. I used to work with him on a journal here in Brisbane Australia in the late-80's called Apathy. I was an egotistical Bret Easton Ellis wannabe writer, but as an artist, Hugh was the real deal. My favourite work of his that he submitted was The Inebriated Adventures Of Bourbon Bear, and he even did a pencil-sketch of me during an Apathy picnic we once had. But you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, etc.
I also heard he had designed various movie posters in the 90's, like The Shadow (1994), and one of those Star Wars movies people seem to like.
Another pair of random covers that I love are Spider-Man 6 and 7 from 1990
Great list. Of course everyone will have a different version of this, but I love seeing what other people like. Yours had some of my all-time favorites and some I've never seen before. Your work is much appreciated.
Thanks! You too!
The first xmen #3 from 2012 the neal adams Sabretooth variant is the most bad ass hard to find sabretooth cover ever
Joe Kubert did some really amazing Sgt. Rock covers. Been slowly collecting 302-422 to get them all.
The Amazing Spider-Man #500 J. Scott Campbell Cover 💪😮💨 also the comic that got me into comics
That Batman annual #14 was immediately purchased off ebay by yours truly! Great video as always
You should check out the Action Comics variants from David Mack, Francis Manapul, and Julian Tedesco from 1000-1050. Truly Beautiful!!!!
Solid list! A couple of my more recent favorites are Venom #200 Jock cover and King Spawn #1 (cover A).
Wow that’s some beautiful artwork
Thank you that was a cool video and I got to see a lot of covers I've never seen before. Greatly appreciated again thank you.
Thank you. Main reason I collect is for the cover art. Keep it up.
That was a ton of fun, that Alpha Flight #3 has always stuck with me and nice to see Norm Breyfogle well represented. He was always a very underrated artist and he's sorely missed. I was going to stick that G.I. Joe #43 in the comments and you actually had it on the list - wow! :)
One of my favorite random covers is Web of Spider-Man 88
As for comic covers, ANYTHING by David Aja. He has an eye, that guy. Also the Joker Villain Of the Year one-shot Bosslogic variant. That's a winner.
I like Daredevil 200, New Teen Titans Annual 2, Astonishing Tales 26, Nightwing 99, Ice Cream Man 32, Swamp Thing 10 (Vol. 1 1972), and I am sure many more I cannot think of right now. Good video, thanks!
Great list! One cover I think was underrated and the best of 2021 is the Batman vs. Bigby: A Wolf in Gotham #3 variant by BRIAN LEVEL and JAY LEISTEN if I’m not mistaken
One of my favorite underrated covers is Batman #385 from 1985, (no pun intended...maybe) anyway, I love any cover with Batman in the rain at night and a cover like that is exception. Sometimes all it takes to make a good cover is put Batman at night and in the rain and you've got an amazing cover!
Batman #414 was always one of my favourites. I'm also partial to Checkmate #1 (1988) and The Question #17.
Beautiful and underrated Banshee cover art!
Great list. Though that Catwoman Balent cover is actually very popular and was on a lot of official DC action figures cards, posters, t shirts,, Mugs, etc .
Watching this video gave me an idea that I would like to see you do in future videos. Could you start doing creator spotlights of their top 10 covers? Francis J Manapul, Kyle Hotz, and Mike Deodato have produced amazing covers throughout their careers, but don't get all the love that many other creators do as cover artists.
I'd watch that
@@Stunnaz84 and we can all interact by leaving our comments about all the Marvel books James left off the list ;)
I really hope that soon Marvel will relaunch volume 1 of Amazing Spider-man, because at this point screw the renumbering of a book that's almost to the legitamate issue number 1000. It's crazy to think that Spider-man is still not as old as Superman or Batman were when Action and Detective comics reached 1000 issues, yet his book sooner or later is gonna reach 1000 issues, Marvel really should take advantage of that before it's too late.
Great video, really think covers on the hold are underrated for collecting
Supergirl #19 variant by artgerm, one of my favorites. Got the statue today to go with it!
JLA /avengers #4 -Superman holding both Cap’s shield and Thor’s hammer by Perez-so iconic
Good choice
Hey James! Captain America #110 by Steranko is freaking amazing as well. Thanks for all your hard work man, and much success always! 👍🏻
Impressive list. But just for the give credit where credit is due department, I believe that the cover to World’s Finest #212 is a Nick Cardy creation. Interiors of that book were by Dick Dillin.
I really like your list videos 😃 ive got a few more covers for you...
Werewolf by night #6 and #7 Mike Ploog
Red Sonja #12 Frank Brunner
if anyone likes zombie art the Walking Dead Deluxe run has some AMAZING variants, particularly like Tedesco's #19 & #49 variant
for something slightly older, Sienkiewicz's Moon Knight Vol. 1 #24 cover, brilliant red cover with negative space on Stained Glass Scarlet's dress. One of my all time favorites.
Oh and ANY Bolland Judge Dredd cover
It really does
Great video and impressive list. Clearly alot went into making this list. Lots of good ones in there. Thx !!!
Glad you enjoyed!
I don't know if these are underrated covers. But these do spring to mind as "underrated":
Justice League Infinity #1 by Francis Manapul
Justice League #1 (2018) by Jim Cheung
JLA #90 by Doug Mahnke
JLA #118 by Rags Morales
Birds of Prey #59 by Ed Benes
Justice League #24(2018) by Jorge Jimenez
And yes. They are mostly Justice League lol
power rangers #100 Kirkham incentive cover would be one of my favorite modern covers. It ended up as my phone background at the moment
So many great power ranger covers
Great picks.
I would add Aquaman 42(1968) Nick Cardy
Ghost Rider 16(1976) GR vs Jaws
Gotham Knights 23 Scarecrow cover by Bolland
A favorite I just found: Wonder Woman Evolution 7 (Frank variant)
Pretty much any cover by Bolland, Fabok, Capullo, Gary Frank, Louw or Artgerm
Literally every Nick Cardy. Dude was a machine
Yes, aquaman #42 is the best cover of all time but not really under the radar(black manta 2nd appearance). Was Nick Cardy the only artist on this list twice?
-Action Comics #1000 (Jim Lee main cover, 2018)
-Batman '89 #1 (Joe Quinones main cover, 2021)
-Batman & Robin Adventures #7 (Ty Templeton, 1996)
-Batman & Robin Adventures #25 (Ty Templeton?, 1997)
-BRZRKR #10 (Kevin Eastman Cover B, 2022)
-Deathstroke Inc. #11 (Mikel Janin main cover, 2022)
-Walking Dead #1 (Tony Moore "Cynthiana, Kentucky Edition," 2016)
And especially:
-Batman: Fortress #1 (Darick Roberton main cover, 2022)
-Catwoman #43 (Nathan Szerdy variant, 2022)
-Dante (Darick Robertson, 2017)
-Detective Comics #35 (Cliff Chiang 1:25, 2014)
-Justice League #33 (Darwyn Cooke variant, 2014)
-Locust #1 (Alex Nieto 1st print, 2021)
-Superman Unchained #1 (Brett Booth 1:25, 2013)
-Walking Dead #1 (Tony Moore main cover, 2003)
-Walking Dead #150 (Tony Moore variant, 2016)
First the Birds win the Championship Game and now a new MHC list episode - sweet day!
A personal fave that nobody ever mentions is the gorgeous Mazzucchelli cover for Marvel Fanfare #40. His Batman and Daredevil artwork is legendary, but this one fell between the cracks.
I think Eagles going to Superbowl is a BIT better hahaha
@@MintHunterComics Lol no question, but this was also a cool surprise.
Lots of love for Nick Cardy in that list. If I'm not mistaken, at least five or six covers of his were listed. He definitely is one of the best cover artists of all time, IMO.
I love the Darkseid cover of justice league 184!
I like the Marvel Saga covers(1,3,13 epecially). Punisher limited series 1.
Great video! I love your stuff. I would have liked to hear what/why you like them, especially since you create art yourself
Was wondering if you would have a Sam Kieth cover in the list. He is my favorite artist, wolverine covers are great but my absolute favorite is The Maxx!
ASM 612 - Granov cover
Daredevil 323
Batman Nevermore 5
Swamp thing 10 2021 - Bolland cover
Just a few, we could be here all day! Great list BTW!
That was amazing. Thank you!
Dave Stevens did some fantastic covers in some of early indie titles...
0:15 Vigilante on this cover looks a lot like Snake-Eyes, I don't know it's proably just me.
I’ve always liked John McCrea’s Demon covers starting with #40. Also surprised no Glenn Fabry covers made it.
Awesome video want all those covers
Great covers! I would add New Teen Titans #4 by George Pérez. Maybe you can do a 100 greatest cover that your subscribers suggest. Just an idea! Keep on Hunting! Greg
Ooh good vid idea
Supergirl from Artgerm. Great stuff.
For sure!
I'm only a few years into collecting so this may not be "underrated" but I saw Tales of asgard 1 in comic shop early in my collecting and it might still be my favorite thor cover...
Great cover
One of my favourites of all time is Avengers #225. I am getting 3 newer comics slabbed because of the covers Orision #1 and Swamp Dogs: House House of Crows #1 both John Gallagher variants and ASM #20 the new Marco Turini variant 1:25 and tribute cover
Ooh nice!
I've been looking for a Superman 317 that's a very cool cover
Nova [2007] #22 is one of my all-time favorites.
Nice!
Several Brian Bolland covers from Camelot 3000
Love action 644. Glad it made it
Deadpool 67 with Dazzler skating wade to the floor came to mind pretty quickly.
That JSC Le Chat Noir homage is far from underrated, been on my hunt list for ages and is not cheap (circa $700-1000+) :(
Action Comics 419 also far from underrated, widely considered one of Adams best Superman covers
Batgirl 12 also not really underrated, sells for a decent clip at the moment and only going to climb.
Great list!
Tough call. I agree with a few of those. I mean they're mostly great covers but top 100? We agree on the first one for sure.
Where's Mike Ploog. Where's Dave Stevens
It's a list no one will agree with even a little. You did give me a few ideas though and that's worth the price of admission
I totally forgot about Dave Stevens. He was a badass artist.
My favorite comic cover ever = New 52's Batman #3
I must admit, I am a sucker for a great cover. I hate when a comic book has an awesome cover, but the book sucks. You should do a list of great covers wrapped around terrible books, and then maybe another with great covers wrapped around equally great books.
Tomb of Dracula 6 by Neal Adams and 16 by Gil Kane
I'm pleased to be included in a list of 100 great covers, but I'd appreciate the proper credit. Brandon Kruse didn't draw the sad Joker/Batman Adventures cover, I did (Ty Templeton, I suddenly realize my name's not in my my email address)-- but then again, that last Dracula cover wasn't by Gene Colan either, but Gil Kane and Tom Palmer, so I think you're going from the interior credits there and on my issue. Ah well... I gots to say, "what, nothing from Darwyn Cooke, Jack Kirby or Wally Wood?" But you're supposed to be looking at the overlooked, and it's possible none of their covers are.
Wowzers, that’s quite the mistake, my apologies! It’s an honor my friend to have your work be praised. You’re a credit to your medium!
As to no Wally wood or Kirby I was trying to go with some personal opinions on underrated covers. Everybody knows Kirby! I wanted to shed light on many other greats
Realistically I should do an updated video of top 1000 underrated covers! That might prove to be a fun challenge actually
Pitt #1
Daredevil #38
The Amazing Spider Man#55
Avengers #58 #53
Prince Namor,The Sub-Mariner #5 and 6
The Invincible Iron Man #7 and #8
These comics are not keys, but I love these covers: Superman #422 Brian Bolland, Moon Knight #23 Bill Sienkiewicz, Uncanny X-Men #234 Marc Silvestri, GI Joe ARAH #126 Andrew Wildman, Batman: The Adventure Continues #3 Jeehyung Lee Variant.
Solid choices
Does David Aja count as underrated if he inspired the Hawkeye series title sequence & posters? How about the 3 early Web of Spider-man Covers by Charles Vess? Or Hellcop 1 by Haberlin?
Detective 403 and 408 (408 being my first ever batman comic), Avengers 277, Hulk 323, West Coast Avengers 23
Good choices!
Check out some of the Master of Kung Fu covers that Gulacy and Zeck did -very underrated
Many master covers were amazing
You need to look at romance comics if you like pretty girls. Some of the top artists between 1940s to 1970s
Let's do a top 100 variant or ratio covers.
Nick Fury Agent of Shield #3 is definitely one of my all-time favourite cover!
Almost any of Steranko is amazing!
@@MintHunterComics Pretty much. X-Men 50 is also one of my all-time favs
You think you could do another video discussing Four Color volume 2? The last one was great and I don't think that Dell comics get enough love in the comic community. I'd be more than happy to provide any input and knowledge to assist you and I am actually a local viewer to the channel if that helps
I did an entire four color video! Already exists!
@@MintHunterComics I know I saw it and I loved it and would love to see More. The topic of the "most prolific" comic series ever should get more content made I think. I definitely acknowledge the other video since you made that video, I thought you might be more willing to do a more in depth one or more. I don't think Dell get the respect they deserve generally
Monster Frankenstein #4 , Ghost Rider #50, Iron Man #145, Ghosts #42, Batman #646, Secrets of Sinister House #7, Incredible Hulk #132.
Had to look up that first pone - glad i did
check out the PT boat skipper capt storm #11, #13 #15
These would look amazing in the new EGS casing's
They would! Big fan of EGS
Venom Carnage unleashed #3 is a personal favorite. I actually have it on a shirt lol. Such a metal cover!
Also I know it doesn't fit the standard comic book cover but all of Tom Whalen's covers he does for the radiant black universe are just so gorgeous to look at.
Same thing could be said for Ian Baderman's cover of Crossover #6 (1:5 variant)
SO metal! haha
Batman Gotham Knights 59 is a great cover
This is sick, I really like a simpsons comics and stories 1
Solid! Not so sure about underrated though
got Simpsons Comics #94 hanging on my wall! some fun covers
I’ve always kinda liked Aquaman #49 by Nick Cardy. Let me know what you think
Silver Surfer (1987) #54 nothing to do with the key it's just my very first comic book I ever read
Green Lantern 55 and actually any Green Lantern LOL and Daredevil I grab when I see him LOL
Wow minthunter not one cover from Bermejo? damn... I have to say Joker The Man Who Stopped Laughing issue 3B(Bermejo Variant) came out December 2022
He's so popular that I couldn't include him on an under rated list. Did you notice there was also no Jim Starlin covers on this?
You could basically put most marvel covers from 1971-1975 on this list…
Honestly
Do a top indie books
Ok!
Thanks!
Holy crap thank YOU!
Next time just do 20 books, and tell more about why you like each one. It could be a recurring segment. I enjoy seeing your opinion and enthusiasm for the comics, more than just seeing you rattle off titles.
More like this please
Nothing by Greg Horn or Frank Cho ?? Hey, I know what I like !
Well, let me tell you that (although I am thankful you left out Skottie Young) we have a totally different taste of covers. I like maybe 20 of the 100 you showed, the rest is in my opinion mediocre to bad. Far to many DC books (especially Batman). Did you ever pay attention to covers from Jae Lee (yeh, you had 1, I noticed, he had so may much better which are never noticed but ok), from David Mack (on Kabuki or Daredevil), from Jason Alexander (on Empty Zone), please don"t get me started on the great artists that never got to draw X Men, Batman or whatever big names. I get the idea you want to do, but this needs much more research. It is just what you have in your collection. There is so much more.
That's probably the only Ed McGuiness cover that could be considered underrated. How can he be so good at Clark and so horrible at Superman?
I don't know if it's underated, but X-Men 24. Andy Kubert,the Rogue/Gambit kiss.
Aquaman 2, New 52
