Why do so many people hate Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Walt Disney World?

  • Tiana’s bayou adventure has caused a lot of turmoil because it replaced Splash Mountain. Ever since the new ride in Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World opened people have been bashing it. But, does everyone dislike it? And, why is there some much hate out there for this new attraction? We’ll show you a small sample size that shows that more people actually like the ride.

The new ride is worse having it take place in the Avery Salt Mines...
There's too many "Pixy Dusters" (or "Disney Dummies" as I like to call them) out there auto-liking everything the company puts out, and they really need to do their research.

One could say the same thing about Space Mountain. I don’t think it’s that deep. Disney fans are all about the nostalgia and I think that is directly oppositional to change. In a handful of years I imagine all will be forgotten.

The ride space is very underused and the story is stupid. The only positive about it is that the animatronics are incredible and the music is fun. This is going to be the next “underrated Disney ride” because it’s just going to be seen as a way to get out of the heat: I love Disney, and even I’ll admit I was disappointed

@@MatthewERyan Never before have I wanted a Disney World ride to flop. And it’s a shame that many other people also feel this way, but in order for Disney to put their best foot forward, they have to expel the imagineers who worked on this abysmal retheme. The sad thing is, this could’ve been a great ride for children had it not replaced Splash Mountain. But no, the imagineers involved had to make this political and divisive. Splash Mountain wasn’t offending anyone, it’s only a narrative that gets thrown around (and anyone who gets offended by the stories of the brer characters should not have or raise kids).

Because compared to splash mountain....this ride is horrible. It would be different if Disney replaced it with something better, but they didnt... that's the problem. The story is horrible and makes no sense.... the decor and theme is all over the place....they took out all those scenes and animatronics and replaced them with LOTS of dark empty space...and fewer animatronics and screen usage which is just lazy in my opinion... there's a side by side comparison video... watch it there is no comparison splash mountain was waaaayyy better. They didn't even bother to make it look like the concept art that came out when they announced it.

Yes!!! They could add the voodoo dolls in there and then as you’re going up the hill, you hear the song friends on the other side and as you’re going up the last lift hill, you would see an animatronic Dr facilier and right after he says side, that’s when you drop

Yes that would be awesome, I want to hear the evil shadow spirits or cave bats chanting "Are you ready?" and at the bottom, show a tombstone with Dr. Facilier. Also have the dancing pink flamingos. Then I would be on board and excited to riding Tiana's Bayou Adventure at Disneyland.

  • @thefergyfilms
    @thefergyfilms 3 месяца назад +11

I find it incredibly strange that Dr. Facilier isn't a large part of the storyline. Why does Disney seemingly hate their villains? Being too "woke" to not have villains is the opposite of wokeness, its just corporate pandering because large corporations hate the idea of there being inherent good vs evil stories (they know they fall as the latter and it makes them uncomfortable). I was so excited by this retheme given the hope Dr. Facilier (one of the most underrated Disney villians) would have his villian song playing on the lift to the climatic final drop but to have absolutely 0 real threat within the story is unbelievably lame and misguided.

I've heard many youtubers say they like the ride , but im not sure if I do believe them due to the hype and trying to commercialize it to bring guest to ride the attraction. I’m in the minority who didn’t like Splash. I thought it was boring and I had no idea what was going on. Also, I’ve never seen the Tiana movie so the IP doesn’t do anything for me.
Having said that, the new ride is a lot prettier and more atmospheric than the old one so I like it better because of that.
There are a lot of people who were going to hate the new ride no matter how great it was because they’re salty about losing their favorite ride. I totally get that. The ride is underwhelming and has no good storybook . The animatronics look AMAZING!!!!! As I knew they would! But look at all the black areas. Look at the spans of darkness and just a screen with fireflies. Splash mountain : every “ frame” was populated with story. Although dated, splash could have been updated .

The ride is fine , but it didn't need a change and they did change it to have representation for people of colour Which I would be offended at that point , you erase a black man's legacy then re theme a ride for the community, you can't build a new one ? Splash mountain shoulda been re themed to GRAVITY FALLS and they should have built a brand new princess and the frog ride if they really wanted to be inclusive

If you think about it, Splash Mountain was a weird mix of stuff in itself. Disney recycled most of the animatronics from the America Sings exhibit they did for some world’s fair and they just cobbled together the Brer Rabbit stuff around that. Then Michael Eisner told them to use the word Splash because Disney had the popular movie called Splash with Tom Hanks at the time. Which is so dumb because this ride has nothing to do with mermaids. Honestly, since Disney made a choice to distance itself from the Uncle Remus stories it was bizarre to still have Brer Rabbit in the parks. What they should have done is turned this into a Muppets ride and built Tiana a new dark ride of her own but apparently Disney doesn’t want to use Dr Facilier and voodoo in anything ever again. Disney is struggling with all its weird new rules it sets for itself.

WHY DID DISNEY DESTROY SPLASH MOUNTAIN??? I believe I have the answer (finally!!!). Several years ago when I first heard people say Disney no longer wanted to be associated with James Baskett (Oscar winner), I falsely assumed he was currently working for the company (he was already dead), I did not realize at the time he had played Uncle Remus in the movie Song of The South. I guess their vile rhetoric toward Hattie McDaniel (Aunt Tempy in Song of The South - Note her Oscar for Gone With the Wind) blinded me that this was a much bigger travesty with unbounded vicious intent. Quickly the calls inside Disney to eradicate the memories of Beckett and McDaniel grew to a crescendo. Simplifying put, Beckett and McDaniel were simply not "Black" enough (what ever that means) for the Disney Company. Seams the lily white liberal progressives believe they have some God Given Right to define what a black person should be and will go to any length, spend any amount of money to enforce their vision of the brave new world as they see it.

I love Tiana she means something to ppl. She rep something for me and my culture. Why would anyone not love this ride??? How awesome is it that Disney Imagineering used the salt mines of Avery Island, Louisiana used during the Civil War, to create the entrance to the ride, so exciting to ponder the fate of up to 500 black slaves at a time while they toiled and were tortured during the Civil War (See Rice University - Avery Island for further details) covered in infected open sores from the salt, chained at the ankles and to each other and knowing they died in agony while you wait in the entrance to the ride. How brilliant of Disney to use a well documented place of heinous abuse of black people for a family ride!!! Imagine the merchandise that can be created and sold (especially for the Halloween nights) honoring certainly some the worst treatment of blacks in American History!!! Just keep in mine for those who don't appreciate beautiful fun Imagineering, for the squeamish, Disney has put up a sign on Tiana's Bayou stating "Salt Mines - Reserved - For Seasoned Veterans", meaning the tortured slaves.

This discussion has been driving me crazy for weeks and congratulations, your comment section is the one that's going to get blasted with all my thoughts. I apologize in advance. This video is a perfectly good and reasonable take, so thank you.
I started going to Disney in the mid 90's, so I grew up witnessing a series of travesties that, in my view, pale in comparison to the least charitable take of what has happened here. Let's take a trip down memory lane, shall we?
What about Horizons? Arguably the most spectacular of the EPCOT dark rides, epic in every sense. Characters from Carousel of Progress. IMAX that was more visceral than Flight of Passage. Choose your own ending, with miniature fly-throughs of the scenes you just went through. Just great, great stuff. It was replaced with a motion simulator that is too intense for most normal people off the street and too purpose-built to be converted into anything else. I personally like MISSION: SPACE, but it's a catastrophic failure on most metrics.
The only reason I got to ride Horizons a bunch of times like I did was because they just couldn't get Test Track working. I only have vague memories of World of Motion and unfortunately it's not well documented, but it was an Omnimover ride on the scale of Spaceship Earth that, in my view, was gutted to be converted into an empty warehouse with a slot car track. Test Track V1 had a weirdly entertaining queue and a fun and novel ride system (when it worked), but there was absolutely nothing to look at during the ride. V2 ironically swaps a more entertaining ride for a more milquetoast queue experience and I think it's a positive, but with the talking points of V3 being based on World of Motion, I hope it's an acknowledgement that there are others inside Disney that are bitter about this like I am.
Worst of all, of course was Journey into YOUR Imagination. You had to be there and go in blind to understand the utter shock and horror of seeing the best ride in the park, considered by many to be on the same level as Pirates and Haunted, be butchered and stripped for parts. Figment gone, and replaced with an empty void. The shortened, ride time made up by stopping in scenes with nothing in them. Being insulted for having no imagination when you're either confused or having an emotional crisis, then getting blasted in the face and yelled at on the way out.
As a kicker, you have Enchanted Tiki Room Under New Management, where Gilbert Gottfried interrupted A SHERMAN BROTHERS SONG to tell everyone that they suck. The karma was so bad that the Iago figure, and ONLY the Iago figure, burst into flames.
That is to say, I know the pain of a closed beloved attraction.
With that all laid down, to some degree I can empathize with the reaction to Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Splash Mountain felt like one of those staple attractions that was too big and culturally entrenched to be closed. MK was famous for its mountain range, but now one of those mountains is called Tiana's Bayou Adventure. It was new construction, so most folks have been living with it for as long as they can remember and it didn't replace anything notable. And in most respects it was a great ride. There was, however, the whole problem that they simply should not have made a ride based on Song of the South, and even in the 80s they should have known better.
At some point this conversion of Splash Mountain literally any other subject matter was going to happen. I think I even knew that in the early 2000s when I was a preteen. If you were a Disney nerd, you knew that the ride was based on something that had a reputation for being kind of racist. To a precocious kid who had little cultural literacy, this felt a little naughty and mysterious and, by extension, appealing. Even back then, I don't think Disney actually wanted that. I've seen Song of the South a few times since - back then as a crummy VHS bootleg I got at a convention, and more recently in the vastly superior restoration on the Internet Archive - and my opinion hasn't changed: you can't just show it to people for entertainment. As someone who cares about film preservation I am glad you can find it for academic purposes, but as a society we are not currently equipped to have a nuanced conversation about it in the mainstream. Better to shed the optics of THE MOST POPULAR RIDE at THE MOST POPULAR THEME PARK IN THE WORLD being based on racially problematic source material. Of course you would do that. I would argue that adding Tiana to Splash Mountain had a similar air of inevitability to adding Anna and Elsa to Maelstrom, especially if you take into account Splash's proximity to New Orleans Square in Disneyland.
Plus, when was the last time the show quality in Splash was even close to 100%? 2005? It was jank city and a little embarrassing at times. I would think that few, if any, of the figures and effects would be salvageable. Maybe some of the armatures, but they've moved on from hydraulics to electric motors anyway.
As for TBA (yes, it's a stupid name for a ride, like every new Disney ride of the last 10 years), I mostly like it. Here's another way to look at it, setting aside the technical concerns which will arise during a preview period: it's just a vibes ride. You don't need a story. Look at the Haunted Mansion, what's the story? At some point the ghosts decide to become visible and have a party. You could make a similar argument for Pirates, especially pre-Jack Sparrow. So I like that the sort of contemplative outside sections get a bit of a mirror inside, you actually don't need a show vignette every 10 feet. Unfortunately Tiana's narration is a little lame, which reminds you of the story that's barely there, and there is some weird staging at one point (the long run-up to a well lit Tiana in the firefly section after the band). But really, I dig floating down the bayou and taking in the vibes. The swamp is my favorite part of DL Pirates, and when the beyond Big Thunder expansion inevitably eats up most of the Rivers of America, I will mourn Beacon Joe.
I've seen it elsewhere, and I totally agree, that Disney is staying away from Voodoo the same way they are staying away from Tiki and the Hunchback of Notre Dame - to avoid even the appearance of cultural insensitivity in a world where the bar keeps getting higher.
I haven't even gotten to the really good part, that there are a lot of animatronics, of which almost a dozen are top-end A-1000s. That makes TBA as big an animatronics spectacular as any attraction outside of Tokyo. That is not the sign of a neglectful refurbishment.
I could go on all day, but to wrap it up, let's just take a breath and be reasonable. The comments sections and tweets have been coming in real hot because the combination of the social media zeitgeist, recency bias, and the racial issues are amorphous enough for right-wing outrage RUclips to make it about race while saying it's not about race. Remember, "woke" is a word which has been divorced from its meaning for the sake of triggering the masses - its actual meaning is to avoid being consciously, actively shitty to a group of people, it's not about adding a message. Tiana's Bayou Adventure will still be at the Magic Kingdom in 30 years, and this whole discourse will fade into a distant memory.

Okay this needs to be said, Do you know what movie the song Zipadeedoodah came from?
If you don't know, you're not alone. It came from the movie Disney would very much like to erase from it's past 'Song of the South' The same movie Splash Mountain was themed on. Where it's set down in south USA after the civil war, but the black characters were acting much the same as before the civil war. Briar Rabbit and his briar patch? story was told by the trope of a 'magical negro' just look up the movie for yourself.I know people love splash mountain, but it's got some dark roots.
