@@batorsagandszerelem4474 Exactly! I was thinking that too, like why would they she want to put the body on ice and not just have him be taken to the morgue or something
Honestly that was probably what was going to happen. She looked relieved when she saw he was dead, she literally went “mmh”. I think she still had some type of Stockholm syndrome so she felt the need to kill Noa, but at the same time she wasn’t really that hurt by Steve’s death, she probably cared more about her sons loosing their father.
Great review. It really feels like they did make a whole different movie which was supposed to go way more into the horror elements, but then they tested it for an audience and re-made the last 30 mins to please the general audience viewers.
I loved the metaphor of the entire movie being about how men “devour” pieces of women for their own enjoyment, and that with each new online dating experience, another piece gets taken by another man. After they kill his wife and she’s laying there dead, when Noah is out of breath and bloodied and exhausted from fighting, with such a matter of fact tone, asks her friend, “Who’s the hell is that?”, to which her friend replies “His wife!” LOL, and Noah kind of huffs as I’d to say “Oh? He’s married too?!!” Perfect interpretation of the struggle and “fight” that women have to go through in order to find a decent man! The final shot of her phone notifying her of a dating app message with the words “You up?”, also perfectly shows how no matter how many pieces these horrible men take from us, we will still immediately move on to the next. 👍🏼👍🏼 Two thumbs up from me! Loved it!!
literally just watched this movie and knew nothing about it, i frickin' loved it. so shocking and some great commentary on modern culture. big fan of some of the horror films hulu has been putting out. i loved no exit too.
I think your message on “excellent girls night” movie is exactly right. As soon as I was done, I immediately texted my best friend to watch it (we live 10 hours away, so we live text reactions as we watch movies) I gave Fresh a 4 on Letterboxd. I was never bored and loved the underlying message of friendship being the ultimate force.
Overall i feel the same about this movie! Also, the bartender at the end, like ????????, what was the purpose? he literally did nothing. He 's only contribution was telling the best friend, the cannibal's last name, so she could investigate!
Watched this for Sundance this year and I really dug it! Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones' chemistry is what makes the movie work as well as it does
The entire movie is a metaphor - Cannibalism as the objectification and consumption of women. Director, Mimi Cave, was quoted saying, “I think a lot of the movie is about when you leave a relationship with someone who is perhaps toxic, perhaps narcissistic -whatever it is - and when you step out of it, you realize you feel like they have parts of you still that you didn’t get back. I know what that feels like. I walk away from relationships, and I’m like, where did I go? I just let that person have those pieces of me. I gave them up so easily.” Writer, Lauryn Kahn, said that when she wrote the movie, there were a lot more WTF moments for the read in certain surgical scenes. But she knew that she didn’t want to end up there when they were actually filming it because that is not something she would want to watch. That people that are horror fans and people that aren’t could somehow find a common place to enjoy this movie was the ultimate goal. “Mimi has a really good angle that what’s left to the imagination - and I completely agree with this - can often be much scarier. What’s implied, what’s invited into your own brain, could go to a different place than someone else, and that’s going to go to a place that might end up being worse. For me, we know the subject matter, and if we feel the fear, you don’t have to see a lot to still feel that fear. Mimi and I really got into that in a good way of what are the moments to just push it and what don’t we need at all. Then it was just shaping and crafting that. It got to a place that we were just really happy and knew that this was how much to show and not show.”
I watched the spoiler free part of this video, watched the movie, and then came back for the review with spoilers lol. But I REALLY liked this movie. I thought it was really good and the comedy level was just right for me. I also think the acting was SO GOOD. Like they killed it.
I just saw this. Both leads do a great job. Stan is in every way the guy of one's dreams until the dark twist, so you understand why she falls for him. The movie doesn't look like a horror, but the goings on are shocking and disturbing enough. My only criticism is that it's a bit too long. Horror movies shouldn't be so long. It isn't easy to hold the high note for nearly two hours. I agree that if you have some experience with horror stories you will predict the twists and the end. And yes, the end is kind of weak. Sebastian Stan's performance carries the day in my opinion. SPOILER. The surgeries he performs on the girls are in no way as disturbing as the one surgery scene in the French horror Eyes Without a Face.
I feel like they sort of downplayed the horror of the surgeries on purpose. We see Steve often listening to music and approaching them with a more or less upbeat attitude. Which is just as scary to think about imo, that someone could be so nonchalant about the horrifying things they’re doing. But I also see where you’re coming from
I unexpectedly loved this movie. Cannibalism is about the only thing that can freak me out nowadays, & although this movie didn’t scare me it had its moments where I was uncomfy. The fact that I actually got the ick from a Sebastian Stan performance is amazing lol they did so well with his character. I’m with you on the Penny thing though. I full on expected her to just be a stump, no legs & no arms. I feel like they really built us up to be scared of what she must look like & then it was weirdly a let down that she was just missing a leg.. that feels so odd to say lol
was looking forward to this review! i have the same feelings when it comes to extreme horror, but i really enjoyed this film so much, even though it has nearly every fear and anxiety i have when it comes to dating all wrapped up into one movie. i think it was a really great directorial debut from mimi cave!
Just finished watching. It was a fun movie to watch. Would love to watch it with my friend next time to see her reactions. Whenever Noah was talking to Penny, I wanted either Penny to literally be on her last leg like having no arms, one leg, bald, etc. I wished they pushed that body horror on Penny’s part. For example, Noah meets Penny like usual through a wall and Penny is just trying to laugh/cope through the pain and trauma. We the audience never see her until the last time Noah talks to her panning over to her (like previously stated) only having one more limb left and her hair patched up. During the last dinner, Steve serves Penny, the last bits of her before she died
Yessss. Not to be morbid but like, they missed so many opportunities to make this movie absolutely wild. I guess their intentions were not to go THAT far though with it. I fully expected Penny to just be a stump of a person ngl. I’m glad she survived ofc 😅 but... so much potential there.
@@miamichelleabad5821 EXACTLY! I was joking while watching like “Omg he’s gonna say some crazy shit like “The better connection you have with the source of the meat, the better the taste.” 😩😩😩” I would’ve fell out and laughed my ass off (pun intended)
Shudder has an impressive selection of higher-quality original horror films, like Christmas Bloody Christmas, Deadstream, Huesera: The Bone Woman, Influencer, Speak No Evil, The Innocents, The Night.
Definitely didn't know it was going to take the turn it did! Like you said, from the trailer you know it focuses on cannibalism, so the whole part leading up to him drugging her I was thinking "Oh, just wait! He's gonna eat her!" BUT then when it turned out he was going to sell her meat to creepy clients who pay top dollar for it and keep her alive while he does it, that was quite a shock and I loved it. Also really like the music in this.
***Spoilers at the end of my comment. I have a warning before it happens. It's just bothering me so much.*** I watched this last night and thought it was all right. I give it a 6/10. I thought it started very strong and thought the credits late into the movie was a really cool choice (indicating a major tone shift). Steve was a GREAT character, managing to be charming and horrible at the same time. I also loved Mollie and the bartender. The others, especially Steve's wife, were a little meh to me (although the terrible boyfriend from the first date was highly entertaining in how much of a tool he was). I thought it was cool how Steve and Noa had chemistry before and after the events (I'm trying to keep this spoiler free). Their sense of humor especially seemed to be compatible. That's pretty cool. I give it a 6 because I think the second half of the movie is weaker. It needed more horror elements and to be honest, I think it could've benefited from a shorter runtime. I mean, I really wanted more body horror. There was so much potential for that and it was a bit of a letdown. Penny's voice sounded fake to me. It's hard to describe. She sounded so odd that I thought she was going to be a figment of Noa's imagination. Weirdly, she sounded more normal when we saw her fI'm. Also, I think she was laughing as a coping mechanism. ***MAJOR SPOILERS START NOW*** I wanted to keep my review spoiler free, but this is bugging me so much. So it's obvious that the "breast meat" is from Mollie, and Noa eats it. And never finds out that it's from her. What was the point? I totally expected her to find out and be disgusted. Maybe that's too predictable, but why include it at all then? There seems to be no repercussions from this and despite me saying this movie is too long, I almost wanted an "after" sequence to find out how participating in cannibalism affected her. The only thing we got was her retching after the first time. It's just odd. And did she actually enjoy it or was she faking it? I wouldn't blame her for faking it as a survival mechanism. Just weird choices imo.
I honestly agree. Very strange choices in which I saw potential but landed so poorly. I believe that Noa being feed Mollie’s and Steve hinting the whole “familiar” was another failed attempt of dramatic irony to create suspense or tension. When we follow Noa through the movie it’s back and forth through her perspective and our own which honestly annoys me because it’s ONE just pick one. There’s a better element of surprise when you find out with the character (without obvious hints) or wait for the characters reaction(to which we never received upon other things) 5/10 for me only giving 5 to the visual and artistic elements because everything else sucked. Even the acting (expect Steve he was a creep from the start)
@@theyoutubeanalyst3731 It's very heavily implied. Steve said it "might be very familiar" (or something like that) when giving her the breast meat. He also took part of Molly's breast. It's weird that this was so understated in the film.
I personally loooved the movie. I agree that there could have been more gore and body horror, but it didn't bother me too much. And I didn't think it was 100% predictable because the same thing could be said about Promising Young Woman and yet the ending is different.
Love your reviews and your channel! Thanks for the content! My husband and I aren't huge horror fans but we do enjoy an occasional horror movie every now and then and your channel always helps us pick the perfect one 😊
I literally just watched and immediately went on youtube to see if your review was out haha. Great video, I always love hearing your thoughts on original horrors. I'm so excited for you to do more of that in the future!! edit: I also wanted to add that it is also streaming on disney+ in canada if anyone doesn't have hulu:)
I like to watch a movie and go right to Sarah’s review too. I was going to put this movie off until I saw the first 5 minutes of this video. Had to go watch it immediately.
uhggg i would love to see a review of The Batman from you! ive heard its really dark and a full on noir murder mystery! anyways, awesome review for Fresh
I agree that the characters probably should have lost more by the end. I loved the dialogue of the movie, especially Penny's because she sounded like someone too far gone to care, and then when you see her it's just not enough. Thinking back to Hostel or Tusk, there is a real sense that certain characters can never be who they once were.
Thank you for this recommendation! This is my favorite horror movie I’ve watched so far this year. Finally a movie where the leads make smart decisions and I don’t end up frustrated with a headache in the end. Such a cool and unique concept as well!
The second half wrapped into a bow a little too perfectly for the horror element. Penny seemed relatively unscathed for the amount of time she seemed to have been there especially since he started on Noa and Mollie immediately. Considering Brendan/Steve’s concern with keeping his “meat” without fear telling them what was happening to them also seemed contradictory. Given how expensive this effort was it also seems unlikely there’s not additional security or failsafe for escaping victims. Even when the wife shows up WITH big burly man he is of little to no help. I want all of the victims to get away but there would’ve been a provocative element to some kind of message to the cult/elite group at the end like: “site 846 is compromised, new selections rerouting from site 1168 please stand by.”
When watching the movie, I thought this was going to be like fear or you, where the guy falls in love with her and will do anything to keep her in the beginning, I had no idea it went the way it did ( mostly because i didn’t see of the advertising or the trailer). And I like that it kept me guessing
I really liked this movie, but I was disappointed in Penny. Mild Spoiler: I thought Penny was going to be revealed as his accomplice. It would have been a really nice touch to find out Penny wasn’t another victim, just one of his friends or employees who was pretending to be friends with his hostages to help keep them alive longer. It felt like a missed opportunity to me. I dunno. I guess I watch too much Black Mirror. But otherwise, I thought this was a refreshing and modern take on the cannibal trope. It was like Squid Game meets The Burning. 😱
I just watched this earler tonight and I liked it. I didn't love it,but I liked it. As as dark as this sounds,I believe this stuff really happens on the deep web(not that I would ever go on though)great review :)

Thanks a lot for the Fresh review. Cannibalism is one of my favourite sub-genre horror movies. Hope the dvd is available. Anyway I'll check it out. Thank you for all your exciting videos! I'm a huge fan!
Will come back when I watch it!🙌🏻 Edit: I enjoyed it, but it was too long in my opinion and I do agree with your thoughts. When Penny said that I lit imagined her with half a face something like that, way more disturbing
Just watched it earlier and loved it. I think one of the things that really made it quite different is the chemistry between the leads. The last dinner scene was both disturbing and oddly endearing.
Sarah should look at Love is a Many Splendored Thing (1955) - the only purely romantic film I like, because it is so dry (no weepy stuff, no melodramatics). It doesn't even have any close-ups of the two leads! Based fairly closely on a real story, it is actually quite good.
I had to stop this video in the middle to go watch this movie and I...fucking...LOVED IT!!!! it gave me life today. Thanks for the video because I didn't even know about it and probably wouldn't have watched it.
I felt like the second act dragged a little bit, and they didn’t go as far with the interesting premise as I thought they would have. Also, personally, I was interested in some of the side characters and how they got into the situation that they were currently in. However, those backstories were never elaborated on, and it left me feeling less invested in characters than I wanted to be. I fully agree with your take on Penny. Word for word, it is very similar to what I said to my GF after we watched this. I would give it a 3/5 or maybe 3.5
SPOILER: I walked in on my grandma watching this the other day. I said, "what's going on?" I thought the lady on the screen was Anne Hathaway. My grandma pointed at the tv and said, "He stole her butt." I was like, "...Oh...Okay..." and walked out. 🤣
I honestly saw Fresh as Get Out, but instead of racism, it's critiquing misogyny. The movie was about the patriarchy and about how men treat women more than anything else - even the cannibalism thing is a metaphor for that. It's literally about a bunch of rich guys who just see women as objects for consumption, which is something that's going on irl but through the adult film industry and pickup artistry, but in universe, it's consumption in a literal way. Some of the dialogue was weak and the acting wasn't always perfect, but I liked this film. And I think that they showed just the perfect amount of the gross stuff. We really didn't need to see the graphic things for it to be effective.
I always enjoy your thoughts in movies. I'm definitely intrigued by this movie. Might watch it alone first to see if I want to make my partner watch it with me lol.
As you said, I wanted more from this movie but it was a fun ride! Would appreciate your reviews for: Hellbender, A House on the Bayou and Hell is Empty! I enjoyed Hellbender and I'm wondering if the other two are worth my time...

Loved it!!
Yeah. Like Get Out, but instead of racism it's about relationships with abusive men.
Put the Winter Soldier in any horror movie and I will watch it 🍿
literally just watched this movie and knew nothing about it, i frickin' loved it. so shocking and some great commentary on modern culture. big fan of some of the horror films hulu has been putting out. i loved no exit too.
MEEE TOOOO! loved it
I think your message on “excellent girls night” movie is exactly right. As soon as I was done, I immediately texted my best friend to watch it (we live 10 hours away, so we live text reactions as we watch movies)
I gave Fresh a 4 on Letterboxd.
I think the only purpose of the bartender coming all the way to Steve's house was so he could make that Get Out reference 🤣🤣
I think it was to be a cliche moment where the man comes and saves the day only to trick the audience when he cowards away
it was basically to show that the women don't need a man to save the day
@@naromngin exactly it's most definitely commentary on men and patriarchy
I came in expecting a tame romantic drama, and had NO idea that it would get THAT dark! 😱
I was warned by Amanda the Jedi and a was intrigued!
Yeah it was very scary
I gave them up so easily.”
Writer, Lauryn Kahn, said that when she wrote the movie, there were a lot more WTF moments for the read in certain surgical scenes.
That's exactly what I did just now!!! I liked the movie a lot too.
The cast, director, writing, plot ATE! ;) Loved it.

Loved their chemistry throughout the movie!!
I wish they actually shown more of the surgery scenes to really push that horror
This reminded me so much of the book “Tender is The Flesh”, if you haven’t read I totally recommend it has a similar concept
Tender is the Flesh made me so freaking enraged and sad. I'm still not over the book.
It would have been really disturbing if Penny didn’t have hair. I know I’m vain about mine and if someone took it it would be devastating!
I thought that too
When he kidnapped Millie, I seriously thought he would kill her then and there and feed parts of her to Noa whenever they had the "dinner" dates
@@miamichelleabad5821 EXACTLY! I was joking while watching like “Omg he’s gonna say some crazy shit like “The better connection you have with the source of the meat, the better the taste.” 😩😩😩” I would’ve fell out and laughed my ass off (pun intended)
I just watched this movie, and I swear the ending was SO satisfying
Thanks for sharing! Need to add this movie to my watch list!
I’m obsessed with Sebastian Stan, so I am excited to watch this!!
Shudder has an impressive selection of higher-quality original horror films, like Christmas Bloody Christmas, Deadstream, Huesera: The Bone Woman, Influencer, Speak No Evil, The Innocents, The Night.
I really thought the second person she spoke to through the walls, when she went to rescue her would be just a head!🤣🤣✌🏻
same or that she would have lost both her legs and arms by now
Me too. It was a little dissapointing she was basically still alive. Apart from one leg lol
The only disturbing thing was the teeth on silverware contact
Definitely didn't know it was going to take the turn it did! Like you said, from the trailer you know it focuses on cannibalism, so the whole part leading up to him drugging her I was thinking "Oh, just wait! He's gonna eat her!" BUT then when it turned out he was going to sell her meat to creepy clients who pay top dollar for it and keep her alive while he does it, that was quite a shock and I loved it. Also really like the music in this.
I really enjoyed it! I gave it 4 stars. Paul's storyline did not pay off. I liked him I just wish he had more.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ always love your channel
***Spoilers at the end of my comment. I have a warning before it happens. It's just bothering me so much.***
I watched this last night and thought it was all right.
***MAJOR SPOILERS START NOW***
I wanted to keep my review spoiler free, but this is bugging me so much.
What do you mean credits? You mean the movie title?
@@naromngin Yes. I should've said opening credits.
There’s a better element of surprise when you find out with the character (without obvious hints) or wait for the characters reaction(to which we never received upon other things)
5/10 for me only giving 5 to the visual and artistic elements because everything else sucked. Even the acting (expect Steve he was a creep from the start)
Do we know for sure that the breast meat is from Molly? Because I'm not sure.
I loved this movie ! The filmography was beautiful and the soundtrack was amazing !
this movie is like if u gave a super basic rundown of martyrs to the director of ready or not and had them make a dark rom com horror
He lives in the middle of nowhere. And it would be really silly hiring people for something like that.
@@Paulxl the point is he would be the contractor.. not the one hiring. Like a network of people like him that provide this service.
When watching the movie, I thought this was going to be like fear or you, where the guy falls in love with her and will do anything to keep her in the beginning, I had no idea it went the way it did ( mostly because i didn’t see of the advertising or the trailer). And I like that it kept me guessing
I don't have hulu..but I got Disney + and I found "Fresh" there 🤩 thank you for the review, hugs from Norway!
I really liked this movie, but I was disappointed in Penny.
Mild Spoiler:
I thought Penny was going to be revealed as his accomplice. 😱
I thought the same thing! I was sure penny was in on it, heck I though penny was probably his wife.
Yes! I thought that as well😊
I just watched this earler tonight and I liked it. I didn't love it,but I liked it. As as dark as this sounds,I believe this stuff really happens on the deep web(not that I would ever go on though)great review :)

I finally saw this yesterday and honestly it was one of my favorite movies I've ever seen. I was completely hooked throughout the entire movie and it was very disturbing to me. It was just so good and I was obsesssssssssed after.
Before I watch ur review, I watched the movie first, to feel the shock and horror elements myself, and you're right the movie for me so good, maybe because of the performances of the actors, Sebastian is so charming yet creepy. 😁😁😁
I love Sebastian Stan and same as you prefer mostly horror in dark comedies- I’m excited to watch! Also reviewing more independent horror is such an awesome idea excited for those!!
I just finished this movie and I think it will now forever hold a place in my all time favorite films.
Thanks a lot for the Fresh review. Cannibalism is one of my favourite sub-genre horror movies. Hope the dvd is available. Anyway I'll check it out. Thank you for all your exciting videos! I'm a huge fan!
This is a debut for the director??! Wow, she nailed it!
This movie is rated R18+ in Australia, where I am. That's pretty uncommon.
Will come back when I watch it!🙌🏻
Edit: I enjoyed it, but it was too long in my opinion and I do agree with your thoughts. When Penny said that I lit imagined her with half a face something like that, way more disturbing
Just watched it earlier and loved it. I think one of the things that really made it quite different is the chemistry between the leads. The last dinner scene was both disturbing and oddly endearing.
I was surprised with the lack of body horror too. Like this is the neatest, cleanest movie for something so gruesome I've ever seen.
“I literally loved everything about it and show all my friends, it just wasn’t super unique”
*gives it a 3.5*
They could've done more with Paul but I like how he was just like "nope"
& that was it with him.
Just finished this movie. I really like it! Excited to see what you thought of it. Hope you enjoyed 🤞
SPOILER:
I walked in on my grandma watching this the other day. I said, "what's going on?" I thought the lady on the screen was Anne Hathaway. My grandma pointed at the tv and said, "He stole her butt." I was like, "...Oh...Okay..." and walked out. 🤣
Your grandma sounds awesome
Lol 🤣🤣 that's a cool grandma you got there
I honestly saw Fresh as Get Out, but instead of racism, it's critiquing misogyny.
Honestly loved this movie and I already see it making my favorites of the year list.
As you said, I wanted more from this movie but it was a fun ride! Would appreciate your reviews for: Hellbender, A House on the Bayou and Hell is Empty! I enjoyed Hellbender and I'm wondering if the other two are worth my time...

I just watched Fresh after seeing this review. I thought it was really fun! I love how they kept the clean visual aesthetic despite the gruesome subject. Very understated gore. Which was cool. Also Noa was awesome seducing him by eating humans with him was great. Not super into gender conflict story telling but i can a enjoy a fun movie no matter what. Glad i found this channel i am so bad at finding horror movies. Lol
This was a fun one! The shower scene made my jaw DROP
I really like the way you tick when it comes to romance and comedy. Same with me! :D
Fresh was quite entertaining and definitely agree on the throw away character that was the wife. Like the missing leg!? What the hell, did they ate it?.The Batman reminded me of Seven, I think it would be a good movie for you to review since it is horror-ish.

going into Fresh, i was aware of the cannibal aspect in the movie. i loved seeing the cannibalistic innuendos throughout the movie (obviously before we actually learned)
I like the idea of the new direction. The rants can be jarring.
I really enjoyed it, I liked how the title card didn’t come until later, felt like an entire different movie. I also love most movies that take place in the woods and a feature a cool house!! ALSO would love to hear your thoughts on Come Home in the Dark that’s on Netflix.
Please review The Vast of Night, I've been pushing for this film since it came out. I think you'd love it.
From when the wife was introduced to when we actually saw Penny, I thought the wife was the one talking to Noa through the wall like to mess with her. The flat line delivery of Penny def contributed to that theory lol.
felt very 70s horror modernized...like Get Out! absolutely loved it!
Thanks. I just finished finished watching it and i was pleasantly surprised. Pretty good for a new movie.
My ray of sunshine in a dimmed world.
The cinematography is brilliant
The acting is fine but the story in my opinion is too predictable. Felt rushed and some things didn’t make sense. I very much disliked it.
I like the dance scene that’s whole sequence was good lol 😭
