Luckily she doesn't have to do the shopping. I order online and she stuffs them in the suitcase. 😁

I agree with 1/4 deep sockets. Never use them. Bought a some mid length set and occasionally find a use. No 1/4 impact sockets either; however I do use 1/4 impact universal swivels. Very handy.

Another great haul. Very envious of your mum to be able to travel there. I find modern engines it's getting more difficult to fit anything down there these days 😂 I tend to use mostly shallows. I find on lawn mowers I use the deeps more.

I can't wait to get a set of the z-eal. I got the standard 1/4 ko-ken and they are really a pleasure to use. Those semi deep seem very nice. Thank you!

Always nice to see a new video from you.
It is lovely that with the internet and particularly You Tube the world is introduced to quality tools that previously we would have never have heard of.

Thanks Harvey. With all ll the choices out there, it can sure make the tool buying decisions a lot more difficult! 😆👍

It is a lot more complicated yes!
I have a few ground rules.
I am British so the first one is,
*Made in Britain. (Not many tools made here anymore.)
*Made in Japan. I mainly work in construction so I have known about and owned Japanese tools since before the internet. I still own, love and appreciate all of them.
*Made in USA. I used to travel to America a lot years ago. I would love a trip to Sears, HD and Lowes.
They always seem a really good standard and a good price.
I do own tools from Taiwan and just the odd unavoidable made in China but nothing that I use on a regular basis.
One last rule I have, and this may surprise people.
I buy nothing from any company owned by Stanley Black and Decker.
They have disappointed me down so many times I now make a blanket ban on all of them, even if they still have a good reputation like Facom.

i also don't use my 1/4 deep chrome sockets that much. I bought koken semi-deep 8, 10, and 13 as those are most common on the car brand that i work on.

10mm length nerd talk… well I own a chrome 1/2 deep set from mastercraft, I only use the 10mm from this set for car battery hold downs, bonus use of this set is that I use the 14mm or 17mm for Toyota rear bearings where you have to go through a hole in the hub to access the 4 bolts one by one. You can easily fit a 3/8 socket but the 1/2 chrome gives you more torque output for seized bolts in the rust belt where I’m at.
For all other 10mm sockets it really does depend. I bought two cheap 10mm when I first started putting my toolbox together and for both of them I JB welded them onto a 3/8 - 1/4 electric impact adapter, one with no extension, and one with a 2 inch extension. With both a short and long reach shallow 3/8 10mm I can easily remove 10mm nuts or bolts in a variety of places using my dewalt impact gun with not much hassle, since I said I live in the rust belt most 10mm have enough rust to keep them firmly secured in place. I like this setup because they are cheap 10mm and so I don’t care how beat up they get.
I do own Koken 1/4 and 3/8 zeal shallow sets and the 10mm from those sets are for very special occasions, or rather for limited application.
Say im changing a bumper and have to remove twenty 10mm, I’ll use the 1/4 impact gun with my cheap socket to do that quick. But then maybe im changing a battery on a car in a tight spot I’ll use the Koken 10mm shallow. I almost never need a mid depth 10mm but I have a cheap mastercraft set of 3/8 for that, hoping to get the Koken zeal 3/8 mid set soon 🤩

the 3/8 to 3/8 you could put a wrench on then a ratchet at 180 degrees and get twice the torqe kinda like a t handle...😉😉😏

I looked at Harbor Frieght for the Kokens & the guy says that they have the real Konan of sockets, says if koken were true professionals choice it would be Koken-pro, I nodded my head and we went to the pro tools section he sold me some professional grade premium Pittsburgh pro.

Hey Chris, just a question regarding Koken dates: Does the letter refer to the Month ot manufacture? ie; Jan = A - continuing through to Dec? I'm not 100% sure on that one. Also, with the earlier Koken (I have pieces from the late 1980's) they seemed to have a different 3 number stamp? Don't know how they get deciphered. Another great haul, thanks Mom!

    • @chriscas-ToolAficionado
      @chriscas-ToolAficionado  2 года назад +5

I've never had this verified, but I've assumed this:
      First two numbers indicate year.
The third number/letter indicates month. '1' to '0' indicating January to October.
I don't have my tools with me to check, but I think November and December uses a letter.
My oldest Koken socket is a flee market find and only has two digits. It's stamped '67', which I've assumed is the date. It's pre-1971, and therefore its a no-hyphen 'Koken' , as opposed to the current 'Ko-ken', with hyphen.

Can't seem to locate those adapters with hex base in koken's catalog. Are they out of production? Can you give model number of 3/8 to 3/8 stubby extension?

Sounds like you have that sort of relationship with your Mom, like I do with mine (and my wife) where they no longer look at you like a weirdo, when you ask them to transport (Tool-Mule) hardware across geographical boundaries. Funny thing is, I'd get Mom to do it way before Dad. She's more experienced at it. Hmmmmmm they're going to Europe at the end of May........ that means Hazet, Stahlwille, maybe some Beta.
