  • There's no denying the cool-factor that a unique color or effect can add to a vinyl record. Splatters, splits, swirls, translucents, the adjectives are endless. In this video I feature a handful of my personal favorites from my own collection...plenty of newer pressings, but also a few older albums on colored wax that might surprise you. Enjoy!

    I remember as a child in the early 60's Liberty/Capitol Records put out Let's all Sing with the Chipmunks on Translucent red vinyl with the original cover of Chipmunks. Later pressings had the cartoon characters. That was my intro into color vinyl. As I got older I purchased the Grand Funk Railroad's We're An American Band, and that was on Gold Vinyl. I then got a copy of Violation by STARZ and that was also on Gold Vinyl. I also purchased a Dave Mason album on Marble vinyl, and then The Beatles Red and Blue albums on color vinyl, and then the Picture Disc Craze happened! I feel like I'm going through this all over again!

    The last reissue of the Distillers Sing Sing Death House has Brodys giant black mohawk profile on the center label with with a yellow and black splatter. Very cool

    Coolest splatter I have seen was Shinedown's Sound of Madness. Clear with a rainbow of splotches.

    The coolest colored vinyl I have is Sabaton's single (double? EP?) "The Royal Guard"/"Livgardet." It is a 12" silver vinyl with gunpowder embedded in it. Haven't played it yet, but I do not expect it to sound super good due to the embedded "contaminants." It was only sold in Sweden and there were only 500 copies, so it was not cheap to get in the US, but it was one of my grail records and I am very happy with it.
    Still waiting for an original pressing of the Swedish version of Sabaton's "Carolus Rex" to come up for sale, which was on a yellow blue split (the colors of the Swedish flag).

    There are colored discs on shellac going back as far as the 1920s. Some stunning multicolor from vocalion label. Picture discs going back to at least 1933 by Victor. Likely made with some sort of acrylic or hard enamel. Not sure.

    The Black Crowes Tall Session 3LP colored release is amazing. Also some of my favorite versions of these songs. I found one a few years ago!

    My most impressive one LOOKS BLACK, but it's translucent. Hold it to the light and it's SPLATTER brown. Def Leppards 1992 US 7" Make Love Like A Man. Most translucents are root beer color solid. Chickenfoots 2nd album cover is 3d and came with the glasses. Another oddity. I have a 2002 Less Than Jake vinyl, where the last song on side 1, plays backward - inner groove to out. The needle just stopped before that song, but I knew there was one more song, so I put the needle in the middle of the song, and it went backward lol

      Have several of the translucent black LPs as well! Always love discovering them. The Police Syncronicity and NIN Pretty Hate Machine originals are both like that. So damn cool

      @@NTXVinyl I've got Pretty Hate Machine orig on TVT, and it's not translucent. I've got a bunch of synchronicity - most are root beer, a couple are purple, one is silver

    Mine is more of a sentimental record, but Elvis Presley's "A Canadian Tribute" album from 1978 is a straight up yellow translucent vinyl. It's nothing special per se, but a pretty cool record with live recordings from his only tour outside of the United States (embarking in 3 Canadian cities during the 1950s).

    Just watched your colored vinyl episode and really enjoyed! When I was deciding what to collect, I wanted a collection that not too many people would have, so I thought multi-platinum selling albums would be good but I had to make it a bit more difficult so I decided that they had to be on colored vinyl! And the best thing is that even if someone decided to collect the same, no two collections would be the same! I’m thoroughly enjoying this collection which keeps me fairly busy doing the research. I thought for sure that the color vinyl aspect would keep my collection from exploding into an unmanageable quantity of records plus also be easy on the wallet because in my mind I didn’t think I’d find many multi-platinum sellers on color vinyl…..boy was I wrong!!! Yes many “key” platinums are not on color vinyl but believe me, there are MANY that are!!!! At the moment I’m at about 160 records but from what I’ve discovered, still have many to find!!!! Take care! ✌️

      I haven’t counted but close to 100. I unintentionally began my collection at Wallmart🥸.

    Enjoyed your video on coloured vinyl. I also have the Frog Brigade set the same as you showed , but my Dub Side Of The Moon is a transparent dark green, you should also check out Atomic Rooster, Death Walks Behind You on starburst vinyl, looks good & a great album.

    One of my favorites, and I hope I can own it someday is Northlane's Discoveries album on vinyl, specifically the nebula pressing. Its a great album and the Nebula pressing is extremely cool but they only made 150 of them and thus is incredibly $$$$$$$$. Think I saw the minimum one has ever sold for is $250.

    I was wondering why you keep the sleeves with the opening facing out-aren't you afraid the records might fall out?

    • @NTXVinyl
      @NTXVinyl  2 года назад +1

      Nope. All in clear outer sleeves - so nothing ever falls. Makes it easier to get in and out, which means less wear and tear
