DEXTER NEV-R-ADJUST Trailer Brakes and How They Work

  • Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Brakes for trailer axles are self adjusting as you apply the brakes.
    This video explains and shows how the self adjusting feature works.
    I replaced all four brake assemblies on a cargo trailer I own, which had a problem where one of the brakes continually locked up every trip I took, no matter how many times I readjusted the brakes.
    The cost differences between Nev-R-Adjust brakes and manual adjust brakes was minimal, so it made sense to upgrade.
    Here's the cargo trailer: • I BOUGHT ANOTHER CARGO...
    Here's a video on repacking the bearings shortly after I bought the trailer: • Trailer brake and bear...

    You did a great job showing how these work, the problem with self adjusting brakes is that they dont always work correctly, you still need to check the brakes periodically and manually adjust. I have Lippert self adjust and just removed my brakes to replace and the self adjust was not working properly.

    Nice video. Like others here, I seem to have one brake (driver's side) that's a bit tighter than the pax side. I've never had an excessive dragging or overheating problem. I just replaced and repacked the bearings and noticed this when putting the wheel back on and spinning it. The wheel will turn, but doesn't spin freely. Maybe it's OK and the pax side is too loose? 😅 Going for a test drive later this week.

    Need a tip…got a new set out on one side of a big tex single tandem 30’. One side apparently hadn’t been working. When I picked up the trailer, it doesn’t stop well…I took it back to the shop and they said they will adjust if I work them back and forth. Drive home 90 miles…still don’t have them grabbing well even at a gain of 8. Any advice on how to get them in adjustment.

      It's possible the grease seal is blown out and has allowed grease to coat the brakes, or the electrical connection is bad where the wires are spliced together behind the brake backing plate at the axle, which I've seen numerous times.

    I bought a travel trailer in 2015 with dexter easy lube hubs and I assume self adjusting brakes and have not had braking problems. ( rotors wheel not accessible threw ports) I am in the process of installing seals and bearings and the some of the hubs are real difficult to remove and some of the wheels do not seem to spin as well as they should when the wheel is jacked up. I would apricate any input or comments.

      If the are self adjusting brakes, the brakes might be way too tight, but that really shouldn't happen with self adjusting brakes, so I suspect that are manual adjust brakes. The only way to know for sure is to take them apart. Check out some of my other videos, I have several that show bearing repack and brake inspection.

    Thanks for your reply to my previous question. I am planning on installing the brakes like in your video . I watched the Dexter video and they explained that you may need to make the one adjustment after installation to make a little contact with the drum. Are you able to easily access the adjustment wheel and which direction would you turn the wheel to make a little contact with the drum?

    • @deltabravo1257
      @deltabravo1257  3 года назад

      Yes, you can access the adjuster star wheel through the backing plate. There's two oval shaped access holes at the bottom, which might be visible in the video. Get some of the plugs to cover those holes, or use the ones from your old brakes. The new brake assemblies I bought didn't come with the plugs (covers).
