The gag with the kid measuring a board, which is then cut on the other end, was suggested by one of the guys in the construction crew cast. I know, 'cause I was there! The opening with the guys trying to figure out the pronunciation of "Matraca" - that was mine. IT'S A GREAT SONG! Thanks, Ma-trock-a!
I'm glad I heard this all those years ago, and that I have known about her for that long. She has been robbed as a performer, but those royalty checks for all the hits she has written must soften the blow a bit.
I still can't believe this was not a huge hit like it should've been! Not only is it such a great song, but WMZQ in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area used to play this song a lot when I was little in the early 90s, as if it was a big hit. I have it on at least 3 or 4 different tapes I recorded off the radio in early 1991. I remember listening to it over and over on my Walkman throughout the 90s, and I still can't get enough of it today! It's a great song to crank up when you're feeling down, especially.
Matraca's way too good for" mainstream Nashville Country" ironically that's why she's not a household name.. a genius song writer who is a cut way way above the rest. buy anything she's made.

For the reason you mentioned I have often referred to her as the Laura Nyro of country.
Love her music
Hey, Matraca Berg is genius! Singer, song writer, I've followed her from Strayberry Wine, thank you.
