  • I've been after another E90 for a while, and was looking at pre-LCI 320d M Sport models with the M47 engine..... then this N52 330i Manual came up cheap, and I couldnt resist.
I bought it unseen and had is delivered. This is Part 1 of the investigation into the 2e77 error which is to do with 'firing voltage' and normally come down to an earthing issue.

Still chasing my tail trying to get to the bottom of the issue. I have had a 2nd company try to test the DME and they weren't able to. I will be trying a replacement next.

I am both envious and thankful when I see people like you Neil. Envious because I have zero knowledge and have always hated doing anything on cars. Thankful because I have known plenty of people to help me out when needed and that the car bug has never really bitten me as it has you. I think you must have more spare parts than many scrap yards :) Good luck with the overhaul.

Haha. I recently gave up my lockup but do have a stash of Nissan Primera parts in my shed.

Is the fuel pump running when you crank it over? I'm wondering if the pump primes but isn't getting a signal whilst the car is running or at least cranking over, so once the primed pressure is used there isn't anymore fuel being delivered. Not saying it's a pump problem but maybe pump module

That is entirely possible, but only issue is that I only get a code for an earth issue.

So what's the end result? Did you manage to solve the problem? Exactly the same problem with the BMW E60, we've been looking for it for 2 weeks now

I’m chasing my tail a bit. I got a replacement 2nd hand DME with the same part no. But the guy who tested mine seems to have gone quiet (maybe away) , so after speaking to a mobile BMW mechanic I have arranged to send it off to a company called ECU Testing for a check and (hopefully) repair.
Do you get the same 2e77 fault?

Yes, exactly the same error, the DME unit was also sinking, but it was fine. we don't know what to do

@@Bystrik1434 from what I understand 2e77 is normally an earth issue. If the earth cables are ok it could be an internal earth issue in the DME.
I should have an update mid next week sometime.

My 06 330i started doing exactly this when I went to start it this morning. Same error code, same weird behaviour, it starts for a moment then stalls. It had been totally fine the day before, running great, pulling like a train. I checked the battery box and dme box for water, both dry. It'll be getting trailered to the local independent bmw specialist over the next couple of days to see if they can figure out what's up with it.

I’d be interested what they find. I haven’t had much time to look into this much more as had too many other things ongoing, but I do need to get back onto it.

@@NeilsCarsAviationTravel I had a call from my mechanic this afternoon. They've fixed it. The ecu was fried. It took a while because the place they sent to ecu to be cloned didn't have a donor ecu in stock so had to source one. The ecu place said that the ignition coils can go bad and put a high voltage back feed onto the ecu that kills it. So it's had 6 new coils and cloned ecu. Came to about £750 with labour. The garage is a bmw specialist in Stockport called Darren Wood. They're really good. They said the ecu went to camcoautomotive to be cloned. I pick it up Monday. I'm looking forward to enjoying it's 6 cylinder charm again 🙂

I have sent the DME for proper testing but they couldn’t do it due to some firmware in my specific one unit that doesn’t allow testing.
I’m having one last go to have someone look at it, otherwise it may have to be sold on as a non runner as I’m running out of ideas.
