Actually quite a few people can sing in a language they can't speak. But I agree she is a genius on other grounds.
The emotions that I just went thru when listening to this are indescribable. I was tearing up then smiling. Amazing how a song I don’t understand the lyrics to makes me some emotional. Rhiannon is a master in her craft.
First time I heard her perform this song was live, maybe 15 years ago. I did the same. I went to see Carolina Chocolate Drops by myself on a whim, got right up by the stage, and was sobbing by the end of this song. She used a really old banjo during the performance and the sound was simultaneously joyful and haunting and my body/emotions didn't know what to do! It's become a core memory :)
Heard this song so many times growing up on Cape Breton Island. My grandparents were fluent in Gaelic and I couldn’t believe it when I first watched the movie!

She is part Lumbee Tribe in North Carolina and Lumbee "English" includes a dose of both Irish and Scottish Gaelic. I wonder if she can sing in Seminole as weell since she is part Seminole.
I have seen this video like 50 million times. I get some type of spirit and become some type of way with this woman and her skills and her movements and her spirit ❤ She fills the room with her energy WOW!

I can't explain, It. Have this need to connect with . Growing up, there was a sence of shame with Galic commununication. I am old now, and I need to learn my roots. I am dying. I so desperately need to know that of my father. I treasure this. I live in the United States of America. A great country, how ever, this country would not be what it is without my father. I love him. This song, that any young girl getting ready for "the time of her life" is simple. It used to be universal . Changing times. Breaks my heart, but this music, this song, this lovely woman has brought me much joy!!!!!!!!?
Rita--I'm not sure if what you wrote is your poetry, a song, or simply you writing about your life. I found it very stirring and evocative. My roots have been in America for many generations but they begin in the British Isles. I am Irish, Welsh, Scottish and English. I have found that studying my own roots--that culture--helps me understand and relate to many other cultures.

4:00 am and I couldn't sleep. I see this girl on Public tv and I had to look her up on line. She's beyond compare in her vocals showmanship. In 60 yrs I've never heard anyone so unique.
She's in class of her own. I believe she went to opera college in her younger years ... after her first degree...
Few moments ago, I just watched her video singing La Vie En Rose, and now she's singing in Gaelic???.. Goodness gracious! Such blessings I have today!
I keep coming back to rewatch this from time to time. It was my first exposure to Rhiannon Giddens and I was spellbound. I still am. What an amazing vocalist. And what an attentive backing band, all eyes glued to her.

I've watched quite a few Chocolate Drops vids, and it amazes me how much each of them fed off the other. You could watch one go into a solo, and the others would just smile and you could see the energy level intensify.

I saw her at a club in Toronto when she was still with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and very pregnant. It was like a graduate seminar in folk music, with much reference to her Gaelic interests, and to the black Gaelic speaking communities that once existed in the Carolinas. She's studied Irish Gaelic, and at the time said she spoke only Gaelic with her children at home (she's married to an Irish guy).
What an entertaining mashup starting in traditional Gaelic ending in her own own personal style. Love the bass towards the ends when it descends the scale.

@@obamna666 something for everybody in this crazy world we've made for ourselves..in *every* arena of Life..and, YES, they are indeed, literally, selling records...maybe not *always* vinyl - but even *that* still gets sold today..shops that specialize in record LP's and albums still exist in many, if not all, major metro area cities around the globe [and they even sell them at some Target stores! special releases of new and old music]..even in *Mongolia!!,* there's a guy! in Ulaanbaatar, i think..but definitely there's music that not everyone likes, of course..which sells very well. *plenty of units,* either way..enough to make money for the people & powers behind the projects. so, individuals who write, "sell," in that context, are *very* confused..and need to work on their reading & *writing* comprehension skills😕....even if we break a lot of the *rules* here at RUclips..which can be fun 4 sure!🤗..but NOT stuff like *that,* LoL!! that's a whole other level, sourced from a serious *lack* of understanding some things.😯

Fantastic recording. Pedantic note: the Gaelic song title should be rendered as "S'iomadh Rud Tha Dhith Orm / Ciamar A Ni Mi." The first of the two song titles means, roughly, "many are the things I lack" and it's about a woman getting ready for a wedding.

I swear everytime I watch Rhiannon perform, the feeling I get, is, it is like we are not only enjoying an amazing performance, we are watching history being made -- it is an historical moment. It is like when Martin Luther King gave his famous "I have a dream speech". I was there. You could hear a pin drop. Every one expected a good speech. No one expected greatness. No one expected to hear maybe the best or most important speech in our nation's history -- but it was and everyone sensed it. Or imagine being there to hear Abraham Lincoln's deliver the Gettysburg address. I was at the JFK inauguration speech. That was a magical historical moment. I am not saying she is political. I have said this before. Rhiannon is not just talented and gifted -- she is anointed by God. I really do believe that. She has such a good heart. There is so much emotional honesty and emotional clarity in her singing. Someday, someone listening to her sing is going to walk on water and not even realize it. Sorry, words fail me. I feel blessed and grateful to have heard this.

This must have been an extremely hard song to learn, and she did an excellent job. I seriously doubt she understands what she's saying, yet she sings it with such conviction.
ALS shes an opera singer, she knows what it means.
She has studied the culture and the language.

I hadn't heard of her three years ago except to see her on tv on Nashville, and then listened to her music based in folk and Americana, most of the time of which she is playing the banjo. I've also seen her in South Louisiana. How could I have known she knows Gaelic or that she's an opera singer. I thought I was being nice. Its like opera, you don't have to understand Italian to appreciate the performance.
