    I also have Thalassophobia. Even when I see the dark depths of the ocean in the photo and already start to get anxious. But despite this, I do not know by what miracle, I managed to complete the SOMA game, although the last location 4000 meters below sea level was a real nightmare. In Cyberpunk, on the other hand, I had a date with Judy and I believe that I proved my love for her 1000% by agreeing to dive into the deep with her.

    Water is much worse in the original Assassin’s Creed because when Altair fell into the he'll instantly drown making the Sibrand Assassination mission the most hated missions in the game because Altair just sometimes wants to jump into the water instead of the wooden poles which will result in instant desynchronization.

    It's interesting as someone who wants to work with and around marine life and loves the ocean, to see the other side of the coin. I understand why the fear is there, but I still struggle to comprehend it if that makes sense. I find sharks incredibly fascinating and beautiful, I have no fear of them and instead have respect for them. Not trying to belittle anyone's fear if it comes across like that.

    For some reason I'm perfectly fine with water in real life. I've never been in the deep ocean, although I have walked out to the point where it's about chin deep and even then I was a good distance from the shore and I didn't really feel uneasy or anything. But most water in games induces an extremely strong urge to face away from the screen when I enter it. Games which cause the most discomfort are Far Cry 3, Stranded Deep, Ark, and this really old game called "Shark! Hunting the Great White" which is probably the most disturbing to me.
    I have no idea why this phobia only exist in video games for me but I'm glad it's not a thing I have in real life because swimming is pretty fun.

    • @vegas.mp3
      @vegas.mp3  3 года назад +1

      Dude you’re lucky you don’t have that fear in real life because I can’t even swim in a small lake without thinking that just maybe, a giant fish will swallow me whole, it’s the worst because you’re right swimming is pretty cool!
      I think I heard of that great white hunting game, that one terrible from what I remember as you’re just thrown in the water and basically have to defend yourself against hungry sharks, just terrifying.

    Tomb Raider 2's level called 40 Fathoms was probably the earliest occurrence which made me realize I have thalassophobia. As soon as the level started, with Lara stranded in the deep dark without any breathing apparatus, I actually screamed like a banshee and hit the pause button quickly af. My sister who was watching laughed her ass off. Then I made her play the part because I just couldn't. Good times.

    After having a couple close calls with death in the sea, I can safely say I have thalassophobia. I avoid going in water that I can’t see my feet in and I refuse to explore underwater in Minecraft, yes even in creative mode. You’d think with this fear I’d hate everything regarding the sea but nope! I find it extremely interesting and have even taken marine bio classes and have a vast knowledge about the sea and the creatures it holds.

    I find I've gotten much better with this, but the thing is just game design. More games of certain types let you fight back, whereas older games just used being eaten as a boundary penalty.
    Hopefully not spoiling anything, but... Horizon: Forbidden West has some underwater shit that will trigger this phobia. Still, if you keep calm and be smart, you're straight. There IS some agency.

    I think to this day the worst one by far in my books (yes it even beats Subnautica by a mile) is Crysis (and Crysis Warhead).
    I remember the very first time I played the Crysis Demo back in 2007, I was a bit distracted while playing and got turned around right at the beginning where you drop into the ocean at night and just swam out into the sea,
    due to me talking with my dad at the time and my english not being that great back than I missed the ingame verbal warning that I'm going the wrong way and I eventually remembered seeing a night vision feature in the options menu, so I turned it on and right at that moment a freaking (for that time hyperrealistic) shark launched directly at me from out of the black void of the ocean while being illuminated in that freaky greenish "let's make everything look extra scary" night vision glow.
    Ever since than I nope the F out of any deep pool of water in video games even when I'm in god mode or in a level editor, except Minecraft that also somehow gets a pass in my book for the most part (deep ocean biome at night is still a no go).
    Granted the first Aquanox game also didn't help my Thalassophobia when I was a kid.

    My video game based thalassophobia came from King's Quest IV. The King's Quest series was made by Sierra Online waaaay back in the late eighties to early 90s. In this particular gem, you are required to swim to and from an island. You cannot mess around while doing this because one of three things will happen. First, your character will become exhausted and drown. The second is a shark comes out and eats you. This last is that a whale appears on the horizon. What's wrong with that, you ask? Shortly after appearing, the whale sinks back beneath the waves. And shortly after that, if you don't leave the screen in time, the whale swallows you. And unless you got the peacock feather from the island, you are forced to either load your game or wait until the rancid fumes from the whale's breath kills you and THEN load your game.
    The latest to reinforce my phobia is probably The Sinking City. Several times, you must go diving. There are ENORMOUS leviathans swimming in the distance. Undoubtedly miles in length from tip to tip.

    • @vegas.mp3
      @vegas.mp3  3 года назад

      I don’t know why devs have to show us that the ocean and its creatures want nothing more than to eat us lol. Kings Quest sounds awesome if it weren’t for that water stuff you’re talking about, maybe I should play it!

    I'm not sure what's scarier, what's in the water in video games or how the water looks. Even with as far as C.G.I. tech has come since it's early days it still rarely looks completely convincing most of the time whether it be in movies or video games. My earliest memory of water that actually looked decent in a video game was with Kenji Eno's "D". The game was released on P.C. & several consoles but the Playstation version looked the best. By 1995 standards the graphics were very impressive.

    Deep or massive oceans are always gonna be scary for me even if I don't have thalassophobia. I remember 2 times that I had to swim in the ocean from video games for like 15-20 minutes and had a really uncomfortable feeling while doing it, once in AC Black Flag because my ship bugged out and was nowhere to be found so I had to swim to the closest city wich took me like 20m and the second time was on The Witcher 3 on Skellige where I was completing the *?* things that are in the middle of the ocean and my boat got destroyed by enemies so I had to swim to the nearest fast travel point wich was almost 20m too, these two instances are for sure the worst experience I had with oceans and video games

    • @vegas.mp3
      @vegas.mp3  3 года назад +1

      The Witcher 3 yes! The oceans in that game are so scary for no reason lmao. I was originally gonna put in the video an instance where I was about to do the Ciri mission where you have to sail between two rocks to travel to her dimension but my boat broke down before the rock part so I had to swim to the nearest boat marker. While doing so the game decided it wanted to scare the shit outta me and spawn a pod of whales, which I didn’t know it could do, considering I was playing a game with a shit ton of monsters I thought it was a big fish trying to eat me! Apparently that’s the only other thing the game can spawn in its oceans besides drowners so that’s cool.

      @@vegas.mp3 crap yeah, I totally forgot about the whales that spawn randomly, got really scared the first time I saw one, thought it was an enemy too so when I saw it I noped out of there as fast as I could, until I realized that well they despawn quickly if you get to close. Funny random data, sometimes they can freeze and not move at all wich can make them look creepier at night time
