Taking Things for Granted - Why Castle in the Sky is So Beautiful
#castleinthesky #studioghibli #videoessay
...Pass out on a hill, wake up in the sky
The first Ghibli movie I ever saw had some pretty deep hidden (not really) messages about Greed, Industrialism and Militarism. Do you remember it? It deals with obsession, death, and even the ever present fear of hyper advancement. You know, normal Ghibli faire. Hope you enjoyed me rambling about it :0

The ONE Reason Tears of the Kingdom is better than BOTW
Просмотров 840Год назад
#zelda #tearsofthekingdom #review 4 month hiatus? I blame Zelda. Tears of the Kingdom's Innovation, is the reason I love it so much, the sandbox nature lends to the exploration and discovery being better than BOTW. Each of the new abilities further enhance this point. The story is more impactful. The gameplay loop is more addictive. I wouldn't be surprised if the next installment can clean my f...

    I wanted to love jak 2, i really did. Engaging story & setting, but the lack of polish statement regarding gameplay is a million percent true and one of the lead devs have admitted to this themselves. As you mentioned, vehicle controls needs work. Handling is just poor here. The city being BOTH crowded and packed with narrow spaces makes missions in it more frustrating then it needs to be. This also adds to the tedium of constantly going through it to access other missions. The time limited missions are sometimes entirely TOO tight with it timings. Hell in the hover board mission you show, 2 of those drop off points are relatively hidden. So that just leads to unnecessary trial and error as you figure out the pathing. The lack of checkpoints is just artificial FLUFF at certain points. For example, going through the trials of manhood. There's a series of puzzles you have to solve. You can absolutely die here trying to figure them out and dying makes you go through the previous puzzle you already solved again. That's not adding any sort of difficulty, it's just a literal waste of time. There's nothing wrong with a challenging game, but it needs to be challenging for the right reasons and Jak 2 DOES NOT fall in that category.

    I originally watched the Studio Ghibli films in Japanese so I was a bit put off watching the dub versions later. Particularly, I find the Jiji character somewhat overdone in the English version. He's not supposed to be calling so much attention to himself. This is Kiki's story after all.

  • @davidlean1060

    I think on a first viewing, that scene where Connie allows a 16 year old girl to get carried away by the cops is a turning point. It's like that moment in Man bites Dog where you figure out, shit, this guy really IS a murdering psycho!' HOwever, when you ponder the movie after it's over, you realise it's the scene after the dye packs and the quick change in the Dominos' rest room. Connie, who claims he loves Nick, bails on him! I do think Connie loves Nick, in fact, I believe the 'I am better than you' line to Ray stems from this. Connie thinks he's the hero and that he's one of those 'greater good' protagonists ie it's ok if a few people suffer along the way, because a greater good will emerge to justify his actions and in any case, he's doing it for love, which is a greater motivation than low lifes like Ray can muster. The thing is, Connie is a deviant f**k up! He can't even help himself! We don't explicitly see his redemption, but he clearly fesses up to everything and takes full responsibility for his 'sins' and this allows Nick, who didn't need saving, to get back into care. It's not ideal, but it's the best possible life available to Nick. At least he's safe from harm, the sort of harm that befalls people who come into contact with Connie.

    Love Spider-Man, I think the 3 portrayals are good but I definitely relate to Tom more since he's a highschooler who thinks he can do more, looking up to his idols eventually learning he can be his own, Overcoming his insecurities and his reckless attitudes, and balancing his life as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man. MCU Spider-Man is great!

    One other note on the Lipstick Message song that opens the film. It was released in 1975, 14 years prior to the release of this animated film. Both a very weird choice for a film about a 13 year old witch(topic of infidelity) but also just so much fun as used in the film...

    I like to think that scene in the hospital where Connie feeds the old lady the orange juice is a symbolic way of that lady seeing a physical embodiment of evil which is why she’s so shocked, she saw the devil that night because that’s exciting what Connie is the way he uses every one in his path to get his way. One of the best films of modern cinema

    • @techboy2002
      @techboy2002 5 месяцев назад

      That’s such a great interpretation. I always thought it was Connie’s superiority complex being gratified. Also there’s a comparison to be made that Connie’s grandmother is his brother’s carer. But yeah honestly I think he embodies a “white devil” in that scene, it would make sense as a core theme in the film is racial profiling.

      Aside from the obvious story connections botw isn’t necessary. But I think should be “strongly suggested” to be played first lol. The beauty of botw is its exploration, while the beauty of Totk is its freedom. If someone was only going to play one they should keep that in mind I think.
