- Thalassophobia is the fear of oceans. So this a video essay about thalassophobia seen in games. I have thalassophobia so I decided to show some games that activate it. And also talk about why I think video games are so good at it.
This video took so long and it is the most work I've put in to any video by far. I am so proud of this video and would really appreciate any kind of support. Thank you for watching.

What is the scariest game?
Gta V is actually terrifying in this aspect. The forest also induces this as you cant really move fast and knowing that it gets pitch black in the night hours adds to it. My first run at subnautica gave the feeling of depth that you dont get from a lot of the ocean settings games. Very well made video and I hope this gets more views.
@@gurugarb Maybe I should finish playing the forest… And I appreciate the support thank you!
Mortuary assistant for sure. The fact that the white demon appears at the wrong time and the dead bodies move or talk is really terrifying Another game is demonologist and this game, ooo hell nah. It's phasmaphobia on steroids. But I wouldn't rank it higher than Mortuary assistant because when if you pay close attention to the ghosts,it will be a quick in and out.
@@kingsammy972 I love mortuary assistant! I forgot about that game but I watched so many playthroughs, it’s kinda hard to find ghost games that scary.
Subnautica Below Zero is scariest i play the game it is Horrifying i got jumpscare from the land worns the land worns are scary when i notice there's sound coming from the ground not notices it i got Jumpscare From the worns
It’s also more scary in subnautica when you realize you were extremely lucky to land on the only part of the entire planet that sustains small life and isn’t just leviathans trying to eat you
It really shows throughout the game as you find all of the other life pods.
Everything else is void.
@@ChaosPlasma999well then thats disproven in below zero
@@Th4t0neBlueberry fair
Imagine landing in the crash site
Its not necessarily a big body of water but the fear that whatever is in the water could take me and I'll never know it's coming is what scares me the most.
For me it’s a mix of the 2. I get scared because I feel alone and desperate but at the same time I know I’m not alone but it scares me that I can’t see and don’t know what is with me and where it is until it’s too late
@@youboozeyoulose4494I agree, it can also depend on the depth and the darkness below surface of water
Realized this is my fear playing Outer Wilds and going to dark bramble.
It's because we all know it's there but we don't know what it is or understand it and that's why because we know something knows the second you touch the water and it can spring on us if it so chooses
The water in sons of the forest is absolutly fear inducing. The one part to get a handgun. Heart pounding
Is that the one with the shark around the little raft thing?
@@TastiiTalks thats the one haha
@birdmananyweather1681 there's a shark??? I just swam to it and got lucky 😭
Frrrr or the cave with the shark
9:34 in sea of thieves, you can go out of bounds. if you go out of bounds, the water turns red. your ship starts sinking. i think thats actually scary.
Yeah, I forgot to add this and realised right after I posted it :(
When I was new my boat was sinking and I was trying to prevent it causing I thought it was another kraken 🤦♀️
I have this fear as well and I often forget I have it then randomly get startled by picture of deep sea or something like that.
Do you get that uneasy feeling or just frightened. It would be interesting to hear.
@@TastiiTalks i feel fear, farcry 3 and gta V was the two first games i decided to FIGHT the fear, but its always scary... You continue swimming, and there is nothing out there, you look down and cant see a thing, and you know there is only danger... And its way scarier when its Hit Kill 😂, just one hit and you dead feel way more like a bad choice to go too deep...
I say that because i lost a good part of that fear, when in farcry 3, i needed two hits to die to a shark, the feeling of badasseness makes you feel safe 😅
the reefback sounds alone would put the fear of god back in me
fun fact: if you can hear the reaper leviathan, it can hear you too.
I always say that remembering the reaper 😂
I have this fear as well and it’s the reason I can’t play Subnautica
it’s tough for me because subnautica is one of my favourite games of all time but it’s hard to play through…
Well, subnautica is not really that scary. Since 90% of the game is just an very peaceful reef, but the parts that are deep are usually places that you shouldn't, and don't have to go.
subnautica is good bc of the Story Design and that it is scary i can 100% understand why you cant play it but its still good af ( i have thalasothobia too)
Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms are you sure what you’re doing is worth it
I couldnt even take the megalodons in ark lmao
Your gazing upon a vast ocean where you can see everything. Fish, a nice coral reef... But then you come across a section where all you see around you is dark blue.... But when you look down, you see the pitch black of an endless abyss. And you can hear something is down there but you don't know what. You are completely defenseless to what might be down there. Then you hear the roar of a gigantic creature.
Now THAT is scary.
I have thalassophobia but idk why I love thalossophobia games, I can't stop playing them, thanks for this video
It’s the exact same with me! I’m terrified of them but I find something so interesting about them.
Certain phobias never get old.
The thrill is what it's all about
@@TastiiTalksi love ac odyssey cause its like vacation and the Ozean looks beautiful and terrifying at the same time
I never actually knew the name of my phobia until now. This is the exact reason i have never played subnautica and why i really struggle to play sea of thieves. Thank you for sharing!
No problem, thanks for the support!
Lets play togethee i want to overcome it
I agree I already am afraid of water and I have just a little of an allergy on water so that’s why I’m afraid of water too
What about the 70% water your body is made of
@@doggtreetIt’s probably just like
If water gets on their skin, they get a rash or smth
They can still drink water though, I think
Bro is allergic to water 😭
You technically have monophobia/autophobia because it's the fear of being alone but you're more on the thalassophobia (just saying)
I have all of those 😅
Pretty sure that monophobia id the fear of not being alone but with something else
I didnt realized I had thalassophobia until I saw some gameplay of Subnautica, bought it because it looked fun. Then as I entered the water, I started getting very anxious, so much more than when I played any horror games. I couldnt swim too far away from my ship due to my fear. Stopped playing after 1 hour and never went back to it. Sad because it heard it was such an amazing game.
I realised when playing sea of thieves and saw so much cool gameplay of subnautica and wanted to try it aswell and it was so much more unnerving than sea of thieves. However still one of my favourite games to this day.
If you ever need to overcome that fear you should play it more. I love how I was terrified at huge objects in the game, and massive empty spaces, but little by little I got comfortable with them all.
Except the void. I'll never venture there...
@@Henrque123 If you ever need to overcome that fear you should venture in there more. I love how terrifying the void can get in the game, and massive empty spaces, but little by little you got comfortable with them all.
Except the void. I've never played subnatica to know what's in there...
I love this video made me realize how creepy the ocean is, I’ve always have had a fear of drowning and just seeing gameplay of these games is scary 😭! I’m subscribed now keep making more videos like this 🙏.
Thanks for the support! And don't worry more videos like this will be uploaded.
you forgot about the red sea in sea of thieves. i only play subnautica from these games but the red sea in sea of thieves is an place out of bounds like the void in subnautica, the sea turns blood red and ur ship starts sinking. all i know about it
Yeah, it really sucks after I release the video I realised I forgot to talk about it…
@@TastiiTalks i always found the kraken scarier than the red sea out of bounds, but then there is the red sea in a history mode, that one is different, because you will not return in the same way as the border
Isn't it a goliath
I’m not even gonna lie you are such a good RUclipsr, you deserve so much more subs, keep grinding and you’ll get there bro.
Thanks! I really appreciate the support, I’ll try my best to keep the quality up!
Thalasophopia be like: H2O goes brrrr
“It was you who went there, and you who can’t turn back.” That’s probably the best description of why horror games are better than horror movies I’ve ever heard. Very nice video.
I havent watched yet, but im excited to. My first experience with this was in super mario sunshine on the gamecube. You had to dive into a sea monsters mouth to clean its teeth. I didnt sleep for days.
Never would have guessed super mario would have soemthing like that. Let me know if you enjoyed the video!
This video should get more views
Damn, This Is Amazing, Must've Taken A While To Make This, Keep Up The Good Work And You'll Be A Very Famous RUclipsr
Thanks!
I’ve played subnautica multiple times, but I can never can over the scarceness of the back of the aurora.
I really liked watching this video it’s great but I will admit my Thalassophobia did kick in a lot since I have that fear and fear of the dark so the dark parts are terrifying, love this though
I have the same chills when i fall off the ship in SOT. I had to work up the courage to dive for the treasuries.
Glad I could inspire you to make this! It was a wonderful video and you're very underrated.
Thanks I really appreciate it! It was a really cool concept from you and I love the videos. I hope we can both continue to grow.
Nobody talks about how scary it is in raft when u dont see whales around you until they pop their whole ass back out the water
Like yk it wont hurt you but you get a heart raising feeling
Omg I definitely have this fear bc I can’t even get through this video. I keep pausing and playing lol
I’ve always been scared of open water. As a kid I would hate going to the beach. The sand got everywhere, and just hearing the waves and thinking about my siblings being out there gave me extreme anxiety. To this day i would prefer a pool over a beach 100x more.
Yeah I’ve kind of been the same, I love swimming and stuff but I really don’t like beaches or water were I can’t see the bottom.
The one phobia I still have nightmares about
i never left so fast in my life.. when i saw the sea in your video.
I actually love the ocean and the endless void that it had, when there is not a F* colossal monster that will eat you.
I never really go in big and deep swimming pools because when your in the middle of it you see nothing but the water and that to me is terrifying
I wanna thank younger me for downloading subnautica when it was free. Saved me 30 bucks and got me a top 5 game of all tume.
I’m so glad I’m seeing people appreciate subnautica. Such an awesome game!
Good for you 🥲🥲🥲
I’m surprised it’s still talked about today. I completely lost interest when the reviews were less than favorable
I played Abzu for the first time with a friend while on acid and it was the most beautiful thing ever lol. It made really appreciate the world in a whole and how big it is
Ngl diving with the whales in Abzu made me almost instantly go into cardiac arrest 😭 my (at that time) girl friend had to help me calm down.
One time i was playing Sea Of Thieves and i was fighting with a meg. I was solo and i was not too scared at first. But when its hitted to my ship while when i was not expecting i found my self in a endless abys with a giant shark and i instantly leaved the game.
this video makes me realize there are 2 types of thallasophobia, the type where your afraid of the solitude, and the type where your in a endless expanse of water with no land near you for miles in any direction, including below, and you dont know if theres omething watching you or if theres something near you, your just stuck there moving with the waves, waiting, until it ends.
This is such a cool topic awesome video
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it
This made my heart beat the whole time thanks
Well Made Video!
You Just Earned a Sub!
Thanks!
The only time I have been scared of the ocean is in Subnautica before I went to the deepest portion of the ocean, and Sea Of Thieves in the Red Sea because it just FEELS like you’re going to die
W vid worth the wait ❤
yep i definitely have thalasophobia
Shadow of the Colossus has some thalassaphobia inducing parts that had me squirming around.

Subnautica has made my fear of the ocean worse
Ngl I highly expected this to be something like a scary thing or a creepy pasta
A true captain will sink with his boat
Bro was having a peaceful day.
Blood water.
Nah I’m out
awesome
i have intense submechanophobia, you absolutely should make a video on it! It is really interesting
Oh hey I live in Knoxville and we happen to have one of the places known for the worst submechanophobia on earth its the jungle boat ride in pigeon forge lol
❤❤❤
"...more specifically the fear of it - Thalassophobia."
*Subnautica menu theme starts playing*
I once fell into the water while playing sea of thieves, my friend was on the boat and hadn’t realized I fell overboard, that is until I started screaming my lungs out bc I was in deep dark blue water
I'm planning on making a D&D campaign in the elemental plane of water so thanks for the video and the ideas that I can use in my game
No problem, thanks for the support and I hope you game turns out great!
The Red Sea absolutely terrifies my in sea of thieves.
Super Mario 64 water level and Far Cry 3 water got me growing up
Cool video bro 🔥
Thanks!
I have thalassophobia, and i like being scared, so games like subnautica are awesome lol
Welp i just found out i have thalassophobia since this video scared me so much during the parts that scared you😖
Underrated
Thalassophobia for me is not the empty void of water, but the imagination if that void of water is not actually empty below you
One of the main factors of thalassophobia is the anxiety of the body’s of water. Because human development isn’t centered around the ocean, it preserves a fear that anything that goes of course, could be deadly and make us feel vulnerable. That’s my take on this topic at least.
great video dude!
Thanks! I appreciate it
About the reef guy thingie I like to think it’s a newborn
There's this youtuber that's very known for his Sea of Thieves and Subnautica videos, Aci; Basically, he went live at some point, I don't quite remember when but it was in 2021, he was playing Sea of Thieves and I recommended through a voiced-message display that he should play Abzú and explained that it was a water game like Sea of Thieves and Subnautica and a few other things
Wow
Its also more scary in sea of thieves where there is red water. Whe you sail too far the water will turn red and sink your ship.
I literally have the biggest fear of oceans because of games, and I haven't even swam in one yet.
Its all fun and games until you hear that the ghost leviathan is larger than the statue of Liberty
Muito bom, mesmo ainda aprendendo inglês, consigo te entender perfeitamente. Ótima dicção.
Sea rivers and oceans is happiness for me for some reasons
This is the very reason when I play a game I never go in the water 💀 water graphics be hitting different.
I hate water but u have an obsessions of the scary feeling 😅
Its so weird, I can play subnautica with little to no fear I was even able to scan a reaper with no fear, but when I play sea of thieves I try to do a merchant voyage and diving down to the wreck just fills me with a sense of terror that is indescribable, or when I dive down to the underwater shrines.
That’s is weird, maybe it’s because subnautica is based on an alien planet with unfamiliar surroundings, however sea of thieves is more alike with reality? Or maybe it’s because you gtt we used to being in the water in subnautica since it’s almost the only thing you do. So in sea of thieves it’s more of a surprise
I tried subnautica once. About 30 minutes I wasn’t scared but once I dove deep I was swimming around jelly fish. I felt so much anxiety. But I kept playing. Then I felt really off once I was realizing there wasn’t anything in sight except a long empty ocean. I started thinking what if a huge ocean monster comes for me. Then out of nowhere I felt it was hard to breathe. It was my anxiety. I started recognizing I would freak out if I was there in real life. Then the damn leviathan takes up my entire screen . I threw my headphones and I turned the game off.
I have thalassophobia and one of my favorite games is Endless Ocean. it's an ocean exploration game made by Nintendo that like no one remembers. so fun, but it also scared me lol.
(if anyone wants to play it, the second one is the best one)
YOURE not scared of the water, you’re scared of what’s hiding in it
I might have thalassophobia then because swimming over water that goes deeper than my feet makes me panic sometimes.
Bro I have the same fear
Edit: also if I fall of a map in a game and it turns all black especially if it's in vr I immediatly leave
ghost leviathan scared the shi out of me when i played
In games if theres a deep ocean or something you won’t be seeing me swimming in it, cuz idk i might have thalassophobia bc just swimming in it or seeing it just send chills down my spine. Even in irl it does the same thing, it just feels scary as hell😭🖐️
The scariest part of Subnautica for me is being deep in a wreck and getting low on oxygen. Enough to make me start to panic as if I were about to drown irl
I'm not sure if it is thalassaphobia, but there was one time I snorkeled around an atoll. The water was pretty shallow until the drop. When I got near the edge, it felt like I was about to fall into the abyss.
My specific flavor of ocean phobia is NOT being alone. Like, an endless body of water and something could be under me and I can’t see it, hear it, or know where it is? Take me god
I honestly agree, I'm insanely scared of Subnautica, but I always start over with some crazy mods that add even scarier things, and after i encounter them I don't want to play anymore😭 but yeah i always force myself to continue until i finish the game. Even tho it's really scary and I want to quit so bad, I still enjoy it for some reason.
In my experiences with thalassophobia, I was never afraid that I was alone. I’m terrified of just large, open waters with no sight of the bottom. I’m mainly scared that some underwater creature will attack me, but in the large, dark, open water spaces, my brain convinces itself that there would be a larger than life creature that could easily eat 100 people without chewing right beneath me.
I’m not sure if that’s two fears in one. I might have both thalassophobia and the fear of big things. I’m not sure.
one that freaked me out is the witcher 3: wild hunt, in skellige, you can spot this huge tail of a whale while sailing and you can see it’s full body when you dive under water. that’s what freaked me out the most honestly, the fact that there was this huge creature in the water which you could never catch up to and it made you feel very very uneasy, i feel like it makes your mind wander to “what else is down here?” when you really think about it. i know there’s nothing else beneath the water but it’s more of a “what if” than anything
Honestly many games scared me af. I am a very anxious person with dysthymia and despite the fact that I am calm in real life even in stressful situations (I am from Ukraine), horror games scare me so much that I can get into a state on the verge of a panic attack and just close the game and give myself time to catch my breath, and I don’t go into the game anymore
When I was younger I played a game called serious Sam the first encounter and I used to be so scared of a level called sewers due to a large body of water you have to swim down getting jumpscared by lightning fast Alien angler fish and once you press a button a giant one spawned
The saddest part of subnautica in my opinion is the destroyed escape pods, and the ones that landed in the ecological dead zone..
I’d also like to add that, I have massive thalassophobia yet can somehow play the subnautica games, yet I’m constantly checking around in the deep parts as if there’s something following me that I can never see..
Assassins creed odyssey gave me Thalassophobia

thanks, I appreciate the support
W vid keep it ip
Thanks! I’ll try my best to:)
i hate the ocean so much, i truly cannot understand how someone can actually like to go deep swimming or sailing deep into the sea.
i can’t even swim in Minecraft’s oceans for god’s sake, this is terrifying!
Talking about thalassophobia, i dont scared of depth and dark of ocean, but i feel very anxious from the moment I dive underwater until I climb onto land. And every few second check out if its anything behind me
Detecting multiple Leviathan class lifeforms in the area
I hate it when there are big builds like the rotors of an ship or bridgecarriers
That fear actually has a name called submechanophobia. I spoke about it very briefly in the video.
