One time, when I was learning Java coding, I ran my code that, after a few integer checks, should print the statement "Tastes like cheddar." However, when I ran the code, what was printed instead was some weird Chinese characters. I took those characters and saved them to a .txt file (which I have since lost, unfortunately, because school computers) and looked up the characters out of curiosity. It was Chinese for "chunky nun," followed by a character from another language which implied sarcasm. I wish I were making this up. I ran the code again without changing anything and it worked as It should have. Best bug ever.
Here's my take on the glitch. I cannot tell for sure, but it could be possible that the enemies that appear in the Lost Underworld have a similar position to an enemy that, if unavailable on the sprite map, defaults to a close object, in this case a sign. This is incredibly likely as the Lost Underworld is located near to both Onett and Fourside, two low level areas. Should this be the case, this can also explain the crash as enemies don't like being in areas where they aren't on the sprite map, and the noise was just a byproduct of the crash.
It should also be noted though that it is possible to encounter enemies where they shouldn't be encountered via activating the game's anti-piracy measures; the result just lets you see and fight the enemy as they normally appear and operate, but with a glitched battle background. What I think happened is that the game may have pulled garbage data for a nonexistent enemy from Onett and/or Fourside (given how weird the game's coding is compared to virtually every other game in existence). This might be why the enemy appears as a signpost instead of using an existing enemy's field sprite, and why the game crashes instead of triggering a proper enemy fight. The presence of the boss swirl may indicate that it's the game's default battle transition (which makes sense given how much simpler it looks), while the green color may just be from Emile back-attacking it. Essentially, the game tried to spawn in an enemy that doesn't exist, and upon entering battle, hit a wall because it didn't have any coding for a fight that doesn't exist.
Of course an anti-piracy measure wouldn't apply here as Emile probably didn't pirate Earthbound as a kid. And the battle transition would make sense, it might be that the animation is stored above the regular animation if the regular one can't play. Fun fact, you can glitch the Lost Underworld out so hard it starts giving you presents that don't exist in the game, the Lost Underworld is basically the Boogey Tent

Chugga, I think that moment of Ness' inner monologue being put on display is to you what Lucas saving the day with the Drago is to me. It's like that one moment where their actions and thoughts aren't dictated by you, the player.
Giving Paula 100 guts through the magic fry pan actually sounds really good, considering her strength lies in her powerful PSI magic she can get those huge PSI freeze nukes on enemies without fear of dying. It also makes her a great character to keep resurrection items on like horns of life or cups of life noodles since she has a high chance of surviving mortal blows. However if shes out of PP then the pan is ultimately not very good: it's one of those min/max situations that increases her strength at the cost of also increasing her weakness. Also if you like using the pray command in desperate situations it helps with that as well.

The late-game area here with Deep Darkness and Lumine Hall and The Lost Underworld is my favorite in this game. It's so creepy and mysterious. There are two sanctuary locations very close to one another (next one will likely be in the next video). Lumine Hall is surreal, and the actual Lost Underworld is the same, with it being this gigantic cavern the size of several cities. Not to mention that mysterious cavern in the void that is later revealed to Giygas' lair... The names of these three areas are also very nice by themselves.
Rebellious Treecko I like these areas because it represents a big escalation in the other worldliness of the locations that Ness is travelling to. What started out as a traditional journey through towns and cities has gradually become a voyage to a prehistoric and edge of the world location. All of it builds very nicely and thematically to the game’s final location.
I honestly prefer the lost cavern towards Giygas''s layer which seems pretty worth while visiting to (plus its somewhat strange soundtrack that was derive from the Beatles, "All you need is love").
That mysterious cavern you go to when you use the Phase Distorter for the first time has an even creepier name, probably the creepiest I've ever heard for an area in a game: The Cliff That Time Forgot. Couple that with the music that plays there, it would unsettle most.

As much as you talk about Jeff's weapons being useless after getting the Heavy Bazooka, you've been using his "shoot" command in battle a lot lately. I noticed that you had him shoot a Wetnosaur instead of using the bazooka, and it survived to hurt Jeff (fittingly).
Whole year late on this, but I'm still gonna say that Jeff's weapon isn't useless per say, but it is in every way inferior to the bazooka and should never be used over it. The only use Jeff's weapon serves is to stall out a battle or to mash through the menu's quicker in order to save a dying part member. The reason Chugga uses Jeff's weapon is because he is either mashing too quickly for his own good, or he figures a regular attack will take out the enemy, and so he just selects Jeff's attack to save time from having to switch over to Goods and then select the bazooka. In the end, I still stand with Chugga every time he mentions the triviality of the Gaia beam, or any of Jeff's weapons in general when he can use multi-bottle rockets _and_ the heavy bazooka.
Fun story about the Chomposaurs... About a year ago I spent three days trying to get the Sword of Kings. When I finally got it I thought, "eh, still got some time left. Why not try get as far into the game as I can?" Within the next hour I found myself in the Lost Underworld and, not making this up, the FIRST Chomposaur I beat drops the Magic Frying Pan. My reaction? Letting out a flat "what?", placing my Wii U gamepad down on the arm of my chair and walking away.
there is a tenda called The Boss, the boss wrote something on a sign. you encountered a glitch where the sign is an enemy afraid of you. you encounted the sign with a backstab (which gives off is a green color) and there was a boss swirl. so my headcannon is that you were fighting The Boss tenda. also the sound before the game crashed sounds like when the skyrunner crashes. cooincidence? i think not!

There is one pendant out there that’s better than it: the Star Pendant. Good news: you can get multiples of it for Ness, Paula, and Jeff if you’re so inclined. Bad news: it’s a 1/128, and the enemy that drops it has a similar issue to the Manly Fish’s Brother in that they share the same field sprite, though thankfully it’s not as picky about when it wants to spawn in and is not a particularly hard enemy to fight or find for that matter. 11:23 Word of caution: if you give the Sea Pendant to anyone other than Ness and you don’t plan on grinding for the Star Pendant, give the Night Pendant to Ness immediately. You don’t want your primary healer/resurrectionist going down instantly after all, and that’s all I’ll say on that matter for now. I remember laughing off the thought of an underground dinosaur world at first, then being so surprised when it tunred out to be real. Then the shock wore off pretty fast when I found how little this place had to offer. Add the slow walking speed and I was deseparately finding where to go until I ran into the Tendas.
Lumine hall is interesting because its one of the only required areas in the game. Chugga mentioned a glitch a while ago that let you get out of bounds on stairs, and speedrunners can use that glitch to run all the way to the end of the game. The only problem is that the giygas fight crashes if you don't complete the cutscene of Andonuts finishing the phase distorter. To finish the phase distorter, you have to complete magicant (by walking to the final room), but you also need to fall down the hole in Lumine hall.
So the speedrun route is: Complete the game normally until Onett. Spawn a whole bunch of enemies using RNG manipulation to cause one of the police barriers to fail to spawn. Clip out of bounds and walk to the threed-fourside tunnel (since the tiles are the same, the collision is not great). Use the ghosts to warp you "back" to Threed, where the first staircase is. Complete winters (skipping most of it by going out of bounds) so Jeff can save Ness and take you to the room with the stairs. Then go to lumine hall and fall down the hole, instantly die, and get warped back to threed. Then go to the last room of magicant and fight the statue. After that, its fastest just to complete the game normally
One of my biggest pet peeves of Classic RPGs like this is the silent blank slate protagonist that we’re “supposed to project ourselves onto or at least project a personality onto” and I always thought that felt really lazy because I want to actually care about you as a character but because you never react to anything you’re flat and boring, and, more recently over the years, feel it can be easily abused in the Fandom where it’s common to have a particular “only one way” of writing that specific character that is “correct” overall, and most of the time that means they immature, idiots and/or assholes that are self aware and clearly don’t ever want to adventure at all or really are all that heroic to begin with. Your speech at the beginning is actually something I hadn’t considered about Ness, and I find that interesting. Well done.

I think Chomposaur is one my favorite enemies if not my favorite from this game. The fact they're so huge from the overworld sprites compared to you, the fact their battle sprite is so huge, how I really just love dinosaurs, and I like purple a lot. That and their design is a great mix of cute and cool, I love them!
Those words at the beginning just made me cry a tad bit and when you mentioned the moments in this game and it got to Teeny tiny ness and friends thats when i teared up and laughed as it was another great moment
I think all the tenda built their wall and called everything outside it the “cage” that’s why the sign said not to feed the dinos in the “cage”, because they think that they caged the dinos in, but they just trapped themselves.

So, interesting little thing here, I'm at this place in my playthrough as well, and I checked, on a whim, when you said you were homesick, and Ness was homesick for me as well. Maybe it's something that always happens in that area for some reason?
Soooooo seeing this comment I decided to get the data on enemy's status weaknesses in Earthbound. I might have miscounted slightly but it shouldn't matter. Left is the damage an enemy takes/chance of having the status inflicted, right is how many enemies have that specific damage modifier/chance of being inflicted. Brainshock is a bit weird because the chance is the inverse of the hypnosis value. Fire Damage: 100%: 69 70%: 50 40%: 26 5%: 18 Freeze Damage: 100%: 49 70%: 62 40%: 37 5%: 15 Flash Chance: 99%: 20 50%: 98 10%: 25 0%: 20 Paralysis Chance: 99%: 36 50%: 81 10%: 27 0%: 19 Hypnosis/Inverted Brainshock Chance: 99%: 28 50%: 65 10%: 43 0%: 27 Looking at that data, the "average" values are 70% for offensive PSI and 50% chance of inflicting for status PSI. So actually, most enemies aren't really "weak" to freeze, it's just that the freeze series is really strong damage-wise.

Whatever the reason, I've always liked this area. A rather inconvenient place to have a hiatus occur, but at least he didn't start the next Sanctuary location yet. On my first playthrough, I knew lumine hall was a trap! But lumine hall is still an amazing and interesting moment for the ways you say! Never fought that big face though
Just like with Jeff and Poo's ultimate weapon I go for Paula's. I also go for the Star Pendant in the upcoming area for everyone in my party except for Poo. I just like having the "best" items on everyone.
I'm not 100% sure if I'm an introvert myself, but I agree about being loud when you're on your own. My computer is in my bedroom, and I tend to be a bit loud when reacting to something, whether it's funny, shocking, or what have you.
I actually had a similar sign glitch on the beach of Summers, I didn’t get a chance to fight it though. I thought it was a normal enemy, so I tried finding it again but if course that was just a glitch.

featuring the Deadly 6 but they are Pig Masked.
And Ness and Pokey team up.
But Pokey is still the final boss.
The late-game area here with Deep Darkness and Lumine Hall and The Lost Underworld is my favorite in this game. It's so creepy and mysterious. There are two sanctuary locations very close to one another (next one will likely be in the next video). Lumine Hall is surreal, and the actual Lost Underworld is the same, with it being this gigantic cavern the size of several cities. Not to mention that mysterious cavern in the void that is later revealed to Giygas' lair... The names of these three areas are also very nice by themselves.
Rebellious Treecko I like these areas because it represents a big escalation in the other worldliness of the locations that Ness is travelling to. What started out as a traditional journey through towns and cities has gradually become a voyage to a prehistoric and edge of the world location. All of it builds very nicely and thematically to the game’s final location.
I honestly prefer the lost cavern towards Giygas''s layer which seems pretty worth while visiting to (plus its somewhat strange soundtrack that was derive from the Beatles, "All you need is love").
That mysterious cavern you go to when you use the Phase Distorter for the first time has an even creepier name, probably the creepiest I've ever heard for an area in a game:

Couple that with the music that plays there, it would unsettle most.

As much as you talk about Jeff's weapons being useless after getting the Heavy Bazooka, you've been using his "shoot" command in battle a lot lately. I noticed that you had him shoot a Wetnosaur instead of using the bazooka, and it survived to hurt Jeff (fittingly).
Whole year late on this, but I'm still gonna say that Jeff's weapon isn't useless per say, but it is in every way inferior to the bazooka and should never be used over it. The only use Jeff's weapon serves is to stall out a battle or to mash through the menu's quicker in order to save a dying part member.
The reason Chugga uses Jeff's weapon is because he is either mashing too quickly for his own good, or he figures a regular attack will take out the enemy, and so he just selects Jeff's attack to save time from having to switch over to Goods and then select the bazooka. In the end, I still stand with Chugga every time he mentions the triviality of the Gaia beam, or any of Jeff's weapons in general when he can use multi-bottle rockets _and_ the heavy bazooka.

Fun story about the Chomposaurs...
About a year ago I spent three days trying to get the Sword of Kings. When I finally got it I thought, "eh, still got some time left. Why not try get as far into the game as I can?" Within the next hour I found myself in the Lost Underworld and, not making this up, the FIRST Chomposaur I beat drops the Magic Frying Pan.
My reaction? Letting out a flat "what?", placing my Wii U gamepad down on the arm of my chair and walking away.
there is a tenda called The Boss, the boss wrote something on a sign. you encountered a glitch where the sign is an enemy afraid of you. you encounted the sign with a backstab (which gives off is a green color) and there was a boss swirl. so my headcannon is that you were fighting The Boss tenda. also the sound before the game crashed sounds like when the skyrunner crashes. cooincidence? i think not!

Bad news: it’s a 1/128, and the enemy that drops it has a similar issue to the Manly Fish’s Brother in that they share the same field sprite, though thankfully it’s not as picky about when it wants to spawn in and is not a particularly hard enemy to fight or find for that matter.
11:23 Word of caution: if you give the Sea Pendant to anyone other than Ness and you don’t plan on grinding for the Star Pendant, give the Night Pendant to Ness immediately. You don’t want your primary healer/resurrectionist going down instantly after all, and that’s all I’ll say on that matter for now.

I remember laughing off the thought of an underground dinosaur world at first, then being so surprised when it tunred out to be real. Then the shock wore off pretty fast when I found how little this place had to offer. Add the slow walking speed and I was deseparately finding where to go until I ran into the Tendas.

And I've been watching since your first Earthbound playthrough, thanks for being my favorite youtuber.
Lumine hall is interesting because its one of the only required areas in the game. Chugga mentioned a glitch a while ago that let you get out of bounds on stairs, and speedrunners can use that glitch to run all the way to the end of the game. The only problem is that the giygas fight crashes if you don't complete the cutscene of Andonuts finishing the phase distorter. To finish the phase distorter, you have to complete magicant (by walking to the final room), but you also need to fall down the hole in Lumine hall.
So the speedrun route is:
Complete the game normally until Onett. Spawn a whole bunch of enemies using RNG manipulation to cause one of the police barriers to fail to spawn. Clip out of bounds and walk to the threed-fourside tunnel (since the tiles are the same, the collision is not great). Use the ghosts to warp you "back" to Threed, where the first staircase is. Complete winters (skipping most of it by going out of bounds) so Jeff can save Ness and take you to the room with the stairs. Then go to lumine hall and fall down the hole, instantly die, and get warped back to threed. Then go to the last room of magicant and fight the statue. After that, its fastest just to complete the game normally
One of my biggest pet peeves of Classic RPGs like this is the silent blank slate protagonist that we’re “supposed to project ourselves onto or at least project a personality onto” and I always thought that felt really lazy because I want to actually care about you as a character but because you never react to anything you’re flat and boring, and, more recently over the years, feel it can be easily abused in the Fandom where it’s common to have a particular “only one way” of writing that specific character that is “correct” overall, and most of the time that means they immature, idiots and/or assholes that are self aware and clearly don’t ever want to adventure at all or really are all that heroic to begin with.
Your speech at the beginning is actually something I hadn’t considered about Ness, and I find that interesting. Well done.

Lost underworld tour guide: This is the lost underworld! We have Chomposaurs. They can give you frying pans, but not all the time.
I think Chomposaur is one my favorite enemies if not my favorite from this game. The fact they're so huge from the overworld sprites compared to you, the fact their battle sprite is so huge, how I really just love dinosaurs, and I like purple a lot. That and their design is a great mix of cute and cool, I love them!

I think all the tenda built their wall and called everything outside it the “cage” that’s why the sign said not to feed the dinos in the “cage”, because they think that they caged the dinos in, but they just trapped themselves.

So, interesting little thing here, I'm at this place in my playthrough as well, and I checked, on a whim, when you said you were homesick, and Ness was homesick for me as well. Maybe it's something that always happens in that area for some reason?

I might have miscounted slightly but it shouldn't matter.
Left is the damage an enemy takes/chance of having the status inflicted, right is how many enemies have that specific damage modifier/chance of being inflicted.
Brainshock is a bit weird because the chance is the inverse of the hypnosis value.

Looking at that data, the "average" values are 70% for offensive PSI and 50% chance of inflicting for status PSI.

Episode 51: Chugga gets to the Lost Underworld, somehow gets homesick from a dinosaur (not sure how), and learns where the last of the Your Sanctuary locations are! All in all, great episode.

I was always fascinated by this area when this game first came out. I guess maybe it was because I was into dinosaurs as a kid, so this area just kind of resonated for me. Whatever the reason, I've always liked this area.
A rather inconvenient place to have a hiatus occur, but at least he didn't start the next Sanctuary location yet.

On my first playthrough, I knew lumine hall was a trap! But lumine hall is still an amazing and interesting moment for the ways you say! Never fought that big face though
Just like with Jeff and Poo's ultimate weapon I go for Paula's. I also go for the Star Pendant in the upcoming area for everyone in my party except for Poo. I just like having the "best" items on everyone.
Considering Paula is the mage, having such high Guts is more than enough compensation for less physical accuracy.
I'm not 100% sure if I'm an introvert myself, but I agree about being loud when you're on your own. My computer is in my bedroom, and I tend to be a bit loud when reacting to something, whether it's funny, shocking, or what have you.
I actually had a similar sign glitch on the beach of Summers, I didn’t get a chance to fight it though. I thought it was a normal enemy, so I tried finding it again but if course that was just a glitch.
