I... never realised that was supposed to be his mouth. I thought it was his chin and the line above it (a.k.a. what's actually his nose) was the mouth. I also thought his white hair were bandages.
God ... some chimeras are so effed up. Some of these animations really highlight how dangerous these things are. I never really thought of that lion-esque one's mane as being a ROTATING circular saw. Can you imagine being some kid with your dog fighting a flaming circular saw chimera!?
Oh yeah. It's still a game so just as your amazing powers won't kill it for like multiple turns, you can be burnt or sliced by it and still be relatively fine to fight it.
It would be even cooler if on a hit they did a flinching animation, like in some of the Final Fantasy Games. Bonus points if they had multiple attack animations as well.
I think most of these were great, although a couple were probable better off not moving like the Barrier Trio, Killer Pork Cyborg, and the Floating Eyeball…but maybe that last one is just because it scares me.
I had a dream last night that MOTHER 3 got remade for the Switch, and that said remake got localized. Though I was apprehensive about it due to remakes generally being worse than the originals, I was wholly disappointed when I woke up and found out it was only a dream.
Oh wow, if these could somehow be implemented into the game via an ips patch, i'd play it all over again. Even though i've already played and beaten the game 4 times.
I had this idea pop into my head a while back, so it's neat to find it made into a reality by someone with their own ideas for it. It'd be cool for them to have little idle animations like what Miitopia does, for example, perhaps making the Forlorn Junkheap just _completely_ collapse, before slowly and jankily getting up again, having Miss Marshmallow taking a moment to clean the scenery, or having the PORKY's stopping for a moment to make rude gestures like the childish prankster they imitate... I was personally thinking of having their animation style in the form of Knuckle Sandwich's motions in my case, but this is neat too.
Imagine how cool it would have been if Mother 3 would have had this but also timed the animations with each of the battle song rhythm combos. Good work!
I wrote a HUGE comment giving constructive criticism for each one, saying what parts I liked and which ones could be better, but RUclips skipped to the next video in my queue before I posted it and my comment got wiped, so here's the TLDR: These are all SO good, I just wish a few of them like Mecha-Drago and Mechorilla were less exaggerated, because it doesn't really seem like something that would fit in to the game. If you weren't really going for accuracy and just wanted to express your animation style, then just ignore that, because they still look really good. My favorite is probably the Mr. Passion one. The baton swings look straight out of a cutscene. :D
I agree. I also believe it would be better if most if not all of the animations were just slower. That would make them look less exaggerated, like you pointed out, and would make them look a little more "real"
Yeah I do think some of them are a little too..bouncy, specifically with a lot of the more mechanical enemies and Masked Man. They definitely could benefit from being slowed down and less exaggerated but it looks great on a lot of them like the Porky statue
I mean, I think it fits the Masked Man a lot as a animation, since I feel like it fits his sword stance and pose. Since these *are* animations, he’s gotta bounce or else all of the animations would look stale as heck. My favorites have to be the Barrier Trio, Masked Man, Mecha-Drago, Porky Statue, and the Cactus Fox as all of them have high quality and lively animations, instead of being slow and- well- not lively. Although, I wish Mr. Generator moved his arms around mechanically. (Oh and the Fassad ones are godly)
By "exaggerated", do you mean how the speed of the movement feels, rather than position it switches to? Because the position of the new keyframe compared to the existing sprite seems completely fine. Likewise, the in-between animations are smooth. Yet the timing makes it feel unnatural: The linear switching back and forth is what makes it look a bit hectic. Like at 0:19, you wouldn't expect the Mecha-Drago to move that much as his idle stance. But I could well imagine movement with a short pause after several iterations of a 'less extreme' movement. Kind of like you'd see a character in an MMO looking left and right every 15 seconds or so. Even more so with the Snake at 1:14 - and especially later at 1:29, as the frame cycle gets even shorter. It actually works amazing for sprites that are meant to look energetic - like Lil Miss Marshmallow at 4:09 - and especially the transition 4:18. And not all look as hectic, if the movement between the frames isn't as linear. The Clayman at 1:03, the Porky Statue at 7:53, and the NKC after that look pretty damn snappy.
However, as you said: the individual frames are _excellent_ - and these are the bulk of the work! I think these issues could be fixed rather well by giving them a different timing. So either way, kudos to Euanverse for his excellent 'pixel artistry'.
While a bit limited to bobbing and stomping I do think the animations are pretty cool all in all. My two favourite details are easily Fassad's hat ornaments moving like the parts of a trumpet because I never appreciated that part of his design until now and how Claus's movement when taking off his mask mimics pulling a needle
You deserve so much credit for this. So many of the animations completely capture the essence of the character and you can tell your focus was on artistic integrity rather than graphical improvements which is the draw for this game There are a couple i would have notes for but you have a genuine talent and you deserve so much love for bringing Mother 3 a little closer to life than it was before. I kinda feel the still frames made things a bit more epic, and the animation not syncing with the music could make timing more difficult, but a lot of these are quite charming.
I know that I'm actually quite a bit late, but there's one clever detail I noticed and I didn't check the comments to see if anyone saw it. I noticed the sprites are actually synced to their songs BPM, which is a clever way of showing the importance of Mother 3's music in relation to its gameplay. Great job :D
These look really nice as if they really belong in Mother 3. I’m sure there originally wasn’t any battle animations to save on space though. You should do Earthbound and Mother 1 next!
This is really cool. Some of my favs include Mecha dragon, Mr Passion and Porky's one. Reminds me of the pokemon gen 5 games a bit with the moving pokemon. Great work!
This is incredible. I always imagined what they would look like with animation, kinda like gen 5 Pokémon, as what some people mentioned. If this becomes a mod, I’d be willing to play the game again with these animations.
I like a lot of these animations, I can really feel your improvement in the later boss sprites! I know these take a lot of hard work to make and I can relate to the passion of this project, which is why I want to see it improve in some aspects. I feel that some of the earlier boss animations were a bit too exaggerated, namely the Mecha Drago, the Tank, and the Pork trooper. Their movements, I feel, don't suit the mood or the character. The only other thing I would fix would be Claus's animation because I thought it a bit silly that the helmet just ascends.
This is amazing! I can't believe I just came across this video! Each of these animations are great and really well done! Some slight criticism though, I think maybe a couple feel too bouncy and fast, like the Mecha Drago and the Clayman, and could be slowed down a bit. Along with that, I think adding maybe a small separate animation that would play after a couple of loops to add some character to each animation would also fit well, and then have them pick back up and restart. Though, that last part is just personal preference, other than that, these are executed beautifully and wonderfully! It's little stuff like adding animation to sprites that gives them nice character, and it makes me wish that if there were ever a remake of Mother 3 or any of the Mother games, animated sprites is something they would add.

True. Or just animate the sword with flashing
I would say just animate him ever so lightly breathing
Make it extremely rare the animation so you second guess whether he actually is human or not
the only thing animated would be the sword sparks
I would've animated him breathing. No bounce, just slow, calm, careful breathing.
