I’m so glad you found it! I will tell you that my grandmother’s really original recipe called for a full half cup of mayonnaise, but this version cuts back a little. Try it both ways and see what you like best.
My aunt used to make this but she used chopped celery, cottage cheese, and a small amount of drained pineapple, no mayo. We lived in California so I think I'll call it the Western version. As I recall when it set all the add ins floated to the top, and it was yummy. I am going to try to make this tomorrow. I am 75 yrs old, so this is really a vintage recipe. Thank you so much for sharing this with us old timer post WWII boomers!
Hey, I am quickly approaching my second half century so I’m no spring chicken! 😁 I love these classic recipes. Great idea about a West Coast version and an East Coast version. Especially, a southeast coast version because I do think we will put mayonnaise in nearly anything down here! 😄
I'm 67 and I'm with you, fellow westerner! My auntie used exactly the same ingredients! No mayo! I think she used some whipped cream and she whipped the cream and jello so it frothed, a quick spin after the jello had begun to set up, then back into the jello mold which hung on her wall otherwise, and when chilled fully, it had this tiny frothy bubbly texture that I loved. I'm talking long ago! Say 50-60 years now! I was a kid and loved looking at it. It was bright but creamy, the crunchy celery cut into a small dice and the sweet pineapple and the texture was perfect. My siblings disliked it, lol. Oh well. More for me! :-) No nuts, too. Just celery and pineapple tidbits.
OMG!! You don't know how long I've been looking for this recipe! I love this dish! But the closest cafeteria to me is 3 hours away. Now I can make it myself! You have no idea how happy I am lol Thank you for doing this video!! 😃❤❤❤

I grew up with this jello salad, I’m 69 hrs old, and have made it just about every Christmas. The only thing different with mine is I add mini marshmallows. That was the way I was taught. I love this congealed salad.
That's wonderful, Gail! I have had a congealed salad with marshmallows, but if I remember correctly, that one my grandmother makes with orange jello and mandarins... I haven't had that one in ages! Thank you for watching! 😊
If you want to make an extra decadent version (and the way my grandma used to make it before she modified the recipe to make it a little healthier), add a half cup of mayo instead of just 4 Tbsp. It's delicious either way, but the 1/2 cup of mayo makes it extra creamy.
Hi thanks for posting this . We had the Furr's Catiferia here and they closed down. I miss going and getting this. Going to make this now been looking for the right mix. You got it ! Thanks so much Blessings from New Mexico
Aww! I used to love going to K&W cafeteria and other cafeterias here in North Carolina, but I think they just belong to our earlier generations. The younger set isn't a big fan of places like that and it's a shame. This is definitely a cafeteria style "salad" though. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment!
I always gently toast my pecans in a little butter on the stove! Brings out the wonderful flavor. As expensive as they have gotten, I want every drop of flavor ❤
Haha I think you're right about it being a generation thing, but even though I'm Gen X, I learned this from my grandmother, who was born in the 1930s. I LOVE this stuff! 😀
There have been a few comments that mentioned folks adding horseradish to this dessert! Makes me curious about what that's like! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
I have been looking for this for a long time I remember when I was a kid we always had this at family gatherings and I am 68 now and my wife can’t cook anymore so I cooking now and I am going to try this !!
My grandma and my mother both from Kansas always had this on the Thanksgiving & Christmas dinner table bavck in the 50's & y60's. Yes it is an old timey recipe and tastes so good and goes with any kind of meat entree being served. My granny always called it just.."jello salad".
That's a perfectly reasonable thing to call it! Also, another version of this that my grandmother made before she made tweaks to make it slightly healthier is she would use a full half cup of mayonnaise instead of just 4 Tbsp. If you want a decadent version of this dish, do that sometime!
I've never been to a Luby's. Here in North Carolina we have primarily had K&W Cafeterias, which I adore, but those are going away. This is definitely the kind of thing you'd find in a good southern cafeteria, though. ☺️
