- If you want your car to serve you longer and save money on expensive service and maintenance, pay attention to these simple yet really important rules. Experts recommend a few things to keep in mind and a few common mistakes to avoid to make your car last longer. If you stick around till the end of the video, we’ll tell you how you can fix a cracked windshield with garlic.
Having the correct tire pressure is a sort of “Goldilocks” situation. If it gets too low OR too high, you can have serious problems. Don't forget about seasonal tire changes and remember to swap your front and rear tires at least once a year.
Sharp acceleration and abrupt braking might feel like fun, but they’re actually extremely harmful to vehicles. If you decide to park on an incline and put your car in Park, it puts too much pressure on the transmission. In rare cases, it can even become dislodged or break down. So the best option is to use the emergency brake.
With the help of the symbols on the car's dashboard, your car can tell you when something's wrong, like when the engine's overheated, something's wrong with the electrical system, or the brake fluid level is too low. Go to an auto repair shop as soon as possible to save yourself from expensive repairs or even an accident. Weighing your vehicle down excessively does nothing good for the car's suspension, steering, transmission, tires, and engine. Plus, overloading increases fuel consumption and makes the car more difficult to handle.
Remember that cars, just like people, need regular check-ups and “health” tests.

SUMMARY
-Check your tire pressure at least twice a month (but once a week is even better). While adding air to your tires, make sure they aren't warm to the touch and don't overfill them.

-Get acquainted with the maximum load capacity for your car and stick to it. Try to get rid of all of the useless stuff in your car.
-Don't hold the clutch in at long traffic lights. During short stops, shift to Neutral and press the clutch right before you start moving.
-Take a clove of garlic, cut it lengthwise down the middle, rub the cut side over the crack, and wipe away the excess juice with a paper towel or napkin to keep the crack from getting worse until you can get it repaired.

Turn off the AC, but keep the fan running a few minutes before you shut off the engine.
Don’t tailgate because debris from the front car can chip your windshield and hood.
Don’t keep your fuel level low as the fuel pump needs fuel for heat dissipation.
Don’t slam doors.
Don’t go to a touch-less car wash. It contains (and needs) harmful fluorides that take the place of rubbing actions.
Don’t use tap water in your radiator.
Don’t wear a diamond ring while driving to prevent accidental scratch on the leather, steering wheel and door handle.
Don’t park on an un-level surface for long periods.
When parallel parking, keep enough spaces in the front and back.
Always drive safely and wear a seatbelt to protect the driver and passengers. This is more important than the car.

grassroot011, I avoid those too. Years ago there were many places you could drive in and pressure wash your car yourself. Don't see them anymore. I wash my own car with Meguiar's wash and conditioner.

They shouldn't ignore it, over 75% of engine wear happens when its cold, like c'mon people, unless it's an emergency DON'T DO IT! You will only be doing yourself a major disservice and waste money getting another engine or car and cost others money if you sell it instead of scrapping the thing.

The trick is to USE common sense. 😉
My tip for parking an automatic on a steep hill is set the steering so that if it rolls, it will roll into the curb, put it in neutral with your brakes to the floor, set parking brake, release driving brake, and put it in park. This prevents the vehicle's weight from resting on the parking pawl.

It always surprises me how many auto drivers DON'T use the parking brake!
Also;
1. When parking on a hill, point your front tyres towards the curb, that way if all other braking methods fail, your car will roll towards the gutter and not the road.
2. Once your engine has warmed up, it's actually healthy to over rev the engine every now and then to help reduce carbon build up in the pistons.

I suppose a good rule of thumb would be to turn the wheels so that if the car rolls it won't go out into traffic.

or just pull the handbrake and shift into P, if your car is manual you can shift to 4th gear and it wont roll , if it does roll on 4th gear when its turned off, you have low compression in the engine.

1. Less fuel in car means less weight on car. This results in higher fuel efficiency as the drag friction is less due to lesser weight.
2. It's better to turn on the AC and close the windows if the car crosses 60 km/hr of speed.
3. Should not rest the hand on the gear shift lever. Causes miniscule wear and tear of transmission parts.
4. Should not apply pressure on steering wheel if we are getting out or getting in the car.

Proud Land Cruiser 200 owner. This car is a stout tank!!!! Bought in Feb 2008 and still drive like new with 390K miles. Yes bought expensive but never let me down. And only regular maintenance like oil change, tires and just once I change the shocks set.

Have driven an auto transmission for a long time now. When placing into drive have always waited to the trans engages before moving off and when changing into reverse, always come to a complete stop and change to reverse and waited to engage.

Just make sure the various fluids are in order, especially the oil. Other than that good tire pressure is all that remains of great importance.
All great tips for extending the life of your vehicle. I think just following your vehicle maintenance schedule is the most important factor in avoiding repairs and making your car last longer. I use Automotive Wolf car maintenance and management software www.lonewolf-software.com/automotivewolf.htm on my computer to track all the maintenance on all my vehicles and remind me when I need to check or replace anything. It automatically creates a superb vehicle maintenance log so you know what was done and when. I currently have over 300,000 miles on my truck with no repairs!
I also use Automotive Wolf and both my vehicles are running great! Excellent software product for any car.

Great information. I remember hearing on the old Click and Clack show that you do not need to warm you car up by idling for a while before driving. Also when first starting out drive moderately or slow to let the engine warm up. Most wear in an engine comes from the cold starts. The oil and lubricants drain down and leave only a thin film of lubricant protecting the metal.
The greatest cause of wear is actually lukewarm shutdown.
Paul, That is interesting. Can you elaborate. I assume a lukewarm shutdown occurs if your drive the vehicle say less the 5-10 miles to work and then it sits all day till you start again to commute home. I know this is bad because there is possible moisture build up and unburned gases that could accumulate in the oil.
You've elaborated and qualified exactly my own thoughts. The moisture and unburned gases are acidic and thus can actually etch away at internal engine components whilst it's left parked and with the engine off.
My car starts up in a high idle that lasts about 15 seconds in decent weather. I don't put it in gear until the idle comes down.
+SM Music Plus - I do the same. Regardless of idle speed it's worth waiting half a minute or so before driving.
My advice - If drive through Serbia - watch out for BIG ROAD HOLES that nobody cares fixing in every road, street even in the middle of the Towns or Cities! The safest option is to avoid driving through this country :)

If you use park on an automatic Trans mission a bearing mounted on a shaft inside your transmission falls down into a square notched out portion on the transmissions output clutch housing. This mechanically locks the transmission from moving. But the bearing, shaft and clutch bell are put under strain when parking on a hill. It's best to use the parking brake to prevent that pressure on the parking pall and the notch in the clutch bell.
One of my top tips is to turn the key to the on position and let the fuel pump prime a few seconds before starting the engine.
How about on push start vehicles?

Not quite sure how this hand brake.. a secondary devise to secure a car from rolling.

I'm at a loss as to why they're calling it an 'emergency brake' when it's a thing you're supposed to use whenever you park your car. The name itself discourages people from using it in the first place. Then again, I've only ever heard it called a handbrake or parking brake...
As a mechanic. I'll take the time to explain it to you in the hope others will learn as well.
It is an emergency brake by law as well as a parking brake. All cars and light trucks use hydraulic brakes.
If their is air in the system you will lose most if not all brakes from a leak,very low fluid or it overheats and boils air into the lines.
In that case it's an *emergency* so you put your transmission in neutral if automatic(downshift and engine brake if not)and push in or pull up the *emergency brake* to slow down but not hard enough to lock the rear tires.
*TLDR*
It's a redundancy as a back up if your hydraulic's fail, much like aircraft which have a mechanical over ride for most hydraulic controls.
Handbrake or parking brake(I call it that when it's a foot brake like in some cars and trucks) is what I call it
DounutCereal I've herd emergency brake hand brake E brake parking brake it all means the same thing just four or two cables that get pulled and clamp the brake down on you wheels the parking gear in a automatic is just a gear that prevents the tires from rotating. Not enough people use there cable brakes
Korrupted my car E brake has two sittings one you call pull it half way then you push the button in and you can pull it even more all the way it's like two different settings
Not to mention that if you park your car without handbrake it will lead to automatic transmission failure (as the car "sits" with all its weight on the gearbox). If it is manual, parking the car with the transmission in gear without parking brake will lead to strained timing belt / chain and sooner or later to engine failure.

This is incorrect. Harsh acceleration is necessary occasionally as just pootling around town eventually leads to carbon deposits etc
You are true. Direct injection engines clog with carbon when nit driven on higher revs. Also some 1.9 tdis with variavle geometry turbos have to be driven on higher revs because the turbo blades tend to get stuck and they cant tilt. This leads to engine going to emergency mode and often stopping accelerating when overtaking.
I'll add some extra notes to this. While it is great for an engine to be revvved up to higher rpm's once in a while. You should only really do this when the engine oil is properly warmed up. (This will take a bit longer than the water temperature gauge to reach optimal operating temperature).

Oil only needs to be warmed up to the low temperature threshold point, which for most oils @ 72f ambient takes 1 minutes of the engine running.

Wash it at least once a week to keep it clean and to inspect any problems that may encounter on the outside (paint chips, early rust, road tar, etc.) Wipe the trim parts down with a wet chamois to keep the dust down and keep it looking new.
Check your bulbs often. I do this and my tire pressure once a week.

Don’t top off your gas tank. Overfilling the tank can damage sensors and break the fuel gauge. Plus it can damage your evap canister which could lead to air pollution and in rare cases engine fires.
I was one of those top off guys, then my top off set the rollover valve. Now I learned the hard way, do not top off tank.

Rockwood Tacoma Some people will fill the tank so full it’s pouring out of the fill valve. It’s just dumb as you will only get an extra few miles by doing this, but do hundreds if not thousands of dollars in damage. Gas needs room to expand as temperatures go up. Overfilled tanks don’t have that room and forces gas into places it’s not supposed to go.

Use cruise control so that you can drive max allowed speed and devote your attention to what happens around you, instead of looking at your speedometer every two seconds!
This helps you maintain a constant speed. (Duh, definition of cc haha) What I mean is, that a lot of people actually brake for an obstacle, then speed up to overtake it. On cruise control, you just check if everything is safe around you, and if so, just overtake without changing your speed. Faster, more efficient and overall just making more sense imho...

Changing air filter every 250 miles? I sometimes drive that much in a day. Nope, changing it every 20,000 or 25,000 miles is ok by my standerds. O yeah, got a new (2018) car. Maybe BRIGHT SIDE was referring to older models. Duno....
Yeah, I thought that was funny too.. With most vehicles averaging around 10,000 miles a year, you would have to change the air filter around 40 times (within ayear) if you did it at 250 miles intervals...
the trick is, take the filter out, beat it on a post outside and it's usually fine, Or use compressed air or a vacuum, if it developes a hole replace it or if you notice a drop in MPG
No way, my air filters last a good 13-30k miles and are fairly inexpensive to replace but there's no way I'm changing it every 250 bc I drive that much with a month so it'd be silly to do so

1 more trick: buy a Toyota
a way to save fuel is when your going down a slope, instead of putting it in neutral, shift it in the next high gear (eg 3rd to 4th) and dont press the gas. this uses no fuel. however, putting it in neutral uses fuel to stop the engine from revving.
During the fall and winter months most people in general warm their vehicles up before the drive it which is good, but what they don't know is that the same can be done in the summer months as well. Only difference would be the overall duration. In the fall and winter months at least 10 to 15 minutes. As for the summer months 2 to 5 minutes. In general warming up vehicles is one of few ways to prevent oil leaks. Another tip that's helpful to extend the life of vehicles is to turn the ignition in the on position for 5 seconds then start it up. This will get the fuel pump engaged first and to extend the life of the fuel pump. This would be preferable during the winter months on few start ups here and there. It's not necessary to be done daily, but if the driver wants to they can. For the exception of the oxygen sensors, other sensors that pertains to the vehicles performance should be changed every 60K miles on average. Depending on driving conditions maybe between 70K to 80K miles or when the vehicle starts to give slight indications of performance issues. As for the oxygen sensors those on average should be changed every 100K miles. Depending on driving conditions maybe between 110K to 120K miles or when the vehicle starts to give the indication of becoming less fuel efficient than before. Another tip is on average to change the transmission fluid every 100K miles. Depending on the vehicle and driving conditions get it changed when the fluid starts to lose its pink color. Discoloration from pink to a brownish color means the driver should be making preparations to get it changed sometime in the same month of discovery or the next month. If the color turns to black that means the fluid should be changed right away. As for brakes those should get changed within a short time frame when the squeaking sound rise to surface. More than likely only the brake pads would need to get changed. If this get ignored then maybe 200 to 400 miles after, in addition to brake pads getting changed, brake rotors will need to get changed as well which will make your repair bill costing more money. If the squeaking sounds gets ignored by the driver for an extended period then in addition to getting brake pads and brake rotors, brake calipers would be needed as well which will make the repair bill a BIG one. Finally, as for the engine oil use synthetic motor oil. It provides better protection than conventional/regular oil. Also, the oil change duration would be longer.
Here is another trick.. If you don't have money to maintain your car then better ride the bus
