They have to be. Their life depends on it. If a squirrel doesn't layer on enough fat (and also store snacks) they die during the winter. It's not greediness like a lot of people think. It's survival. That's why they are so determined. It's life or death for them.
I always scatter some food on the ground when I feed the birds, so the squirrel that lives in a neighbor's tree can eat too.....and it keeps him from stealing the bird's food. Easy peasy.

If you are the Trigger happy type - but aren't into killing - then....
If you don't pump up the airgun more than once, you won't do more than sting them unless you hit thier eye - Unlikely with a BB "Bee-Bee" (little metal ball - they don't fly straight).... I wouldn't pump air gun alot and I wouldn't use a CO2 Cartridge/Tank based one though - too much power - and Pellets - then are lead, heavy, and with air-cartridge - will kill squirrels easy. Paint-Balls are a Safer solution if you want to triain your local varmits/pest squirrels etc without hurting them lethally. Note - Birds are more fragile, please don't pop birds with bb's or paintballs - their bones break easy, and their skin is like paper thin.
If you are like me, and the guy making this video, watching squirrels against Slinky on a Pole and Greased Poles, and electric Zapper Feeders with Remote controls, Those Feeders that SPIN when a Squirrel clibs on and throws them, I saw one where a guy made a catapult that tossed squirrels airborn into his pond - funny - they would fly through the air flipping like a rag doll - land in the water - then swim to shore - No Squirrels Were Denids Life Jackets for the Water, sadly none asked, happily - they all lived that I saw LOL
I Like Squirrels - and I think they are smart. I Like Crows and Ravens even more - smart little animals - Ravens/Crows are purported to be smarter than MANY PRIMATES (Chimps are smarter, but they said that Raven's and Crow's have more foresight - and will use one TOOL, then ANOTHER, as part of a plan where even a CHIMP DOESN'T do that - they will use one tool for one - task - Where Raven/Crow actually devise "Work Processes" requiring multiple tools on occasion in lab tests and stuff - was cool - and scary if a flock comes at you with a plan for your demise LOL) "The Birds" Movie - Alfred Hitchcock
Anyway - Please be nice to animals - If you must use aggressive tactics, please spare the little fellas excessive pain and/or any suffering. They usually are after birdseed and recycling bins with empty cereal boxes containing spare chunks of cereal... at least at my house - I go to the door and this monster Squirrel is LIKE - "HEY HOMEY - Let Me In, I wanna watch the game."

If you look at telephone poles in your area. They have been putting 2' bands around the poles to keep squirrels from making the jump. As long as you don't have anything that they can jump from, a band should work.
I put a piece of flashing on the bottom of a bird feeder I used to have. They could climb up into the flashing but not be able to jump beyond it.
My problem was a fence they started jumping from. Then a top of a post. Squirrels don't eat much, but raccoon would clean it out overnight.

Having been at war with squirrels now and in the past I can appreciate this. However once I started winning against the squirrels the bear showed up. They can be far more effective against most defenses.

I once saw a squirrel live-trap and a squirrel-proof birdfeeder (stuffed back in its ripped box) in a trashcan. It cracked me up so much, I brought them to our local Humane Society. They had a good laugh and got a good live-trap. I’ll have to tell them about this.😉
