I expect your shopping experience was more for anyone else that witnessed it, so it becomes normal . Many little things are being implemented around the world that seem insignificant. They are not. Love the content and your sense of humour mate 👌
Found your channel and have binge watched my way from the beginning to the present. Just wanted to tell you that I find your style something between a David Attenborough documentary and a Monty Python skit. I don't mean that is a bad way.
I am so happy that you decided to clean and finish that old beam. You did an amazing job on that piece…..love it. As for your supermarket experience, I feel your pain. It happens here all the time so I refuse to go to those places. If those business are losing money due to theft, employ more people so this sort of unpleasantry can stop. I am enjoying your channel very much. Thank you.
Being falsely accused or suspected can be a very hurtful experience. This is especially true if you have always been a very thorough and law abiding person. I have experienced a situation where i was even forced to suddenly pay a substantial amount without having done anything wrong. I filed my complaint and i was cleared of all charges after an internal investigation. The police officer even had to write a formal apology to me personally. BUT i never got *all* the money back. They withheld over 100€ for 'service' and 'processing' fees. My lawyer even said that i could do nothing against that and that the money was basically lost in the bureaucracy. So much for being in the right, you loose either way. Even now, it gets my blood pumping thinking about that experience.
You did a nice job with the timbers. They look quite natural. If you want to knock down the gloss, may I suggest giving the timbers a light scrub down with a fine ScotchBrite pad, a wipe down with a tack rag and a thin coat of mat interior varnish. This would be a fairly quick job. 👍
I am in solidarity with you re the Supermarchè . Use cash, shop local , find your nearest Farmer's market, try to grow as much as you can. 👍. I am also in agreement re the beam...what a magnificent feature. 🎉❤
while visiting the UK in 2011 we were surprised that no-one wanted to check our backpacks then. The issue is so many people are stealing now, who can they trust. I certainly don't have an issue as I have nothing to hide!
First time I saw you on video, I said to myself:"Sure that man is a thief, a bandit, a rapior or a kind of predator.... " I was right.... Hahahahahaha..... 🤣🤣🤣
Whilst I have had similar situations where one has asked for reasoning behind such a particular request. Ultimately it is their Store and is very much the world we live in. Lidl in Ferté Macé asked me the same, so not just E Leclerc. I find it’s easier just not to give a F, as I think they’re the one’s who have the problem and will feel foolish when they look and there is nothing to see. I’m sure your complaint will have resonance, either with an improved and equal application of policy to all or indeed, a reduction in its enforcement. Just make sure you continue to shop there as I would think that will reinforce your point each time they see you. The wooden beam looks good 😁
In my city, we had a horrific frequency of violent theft at our liquor stores. Now, the doors are locked, there’s a security guard who takes and scans your government issued identification (drivers license for example) from behind thick glass (I’ve no idea if it’s bulletproof) and only then, you are buzzed into the store. It’s absolutely ridiculous but became necessary due to the actions of others. And, I’m not talking about a war-torn country but actually the middle of Canada! World is going to hell in a hand basket
I wonder if that has always been a "feature"? It's certainly is a discussion piece. With it being the only cross member in the attic, it makes you wonder. Thanks for another great video and story.
I understand how that made you feel. Will you go back? In Australia we automatically open our bags when we leave a large store but only when they have a person on door guard. I think the difference being that there is no singling out of any person or bag type. Well done with your renovation journey.
About the beam, this curvy wood is separated in two with the "aubier" (soft wood) being eaten by worms. The "duramen" is the structural wood. I would personally remone the brittle soft wood with a brush, vaccum and then apply linen seed oil based "huile dure" in 4 or 5 layers. Not a burden to do, dries quick, rejuvenate wood aspect, protect and has a "satin" finish. Very good in "COV" air quality after work. Your work looks good in term of effort and willingness but consummates a lot of products and time. About strength: we must be aware that we never witness dry wood anymore in shops. A lot of stuff is industrialy produced and cut down for market purpose. Those beam were trees once planted by farmers for their great grand kids, slowly grown, respectfully cut at down sap season 200 years ago. It is hard if well protected from water, really hard.
With an old oak beam such as this here.. where the worm has been was the outer white wood that isnt structural and the worm has turned around when it meets the heart wood... the beam is as strong as when it was built.
It's been normal for a long time...... depending on different things. My children are a different skin shade than me, and people don't connect us together, although you can tell and hear they are my babies, LOL. I can't tell you how many times the kids have been stopped for something like you have described, and yes, in front of everybody. And the comments I get when people realize I am their parent can go from ok to something I can't write in the comments. My kids, I guess I should say adult children (but our children are always our babies. LOL) also get pulled over by frequently when driving. My favorite is when the officer pulls them over, comes to the window and looks at whichever one of my children is driving, then looks at me, then looks at whichever grandchild is in the backseat because we all look different as we are a multi cultured and ethnic family, and then the officer looks at everybody again? And I live in a diversified area of the United States? But somewhere, 2017ish and before the pandemic, it started to be ok to have bad behavior and be rude. And it became ok to steal and do grab and runs. Many stores are increasing having a no backpack or bag policy, and they've even gotten rid of carts so people can't walk out with a cart of supplies they stole. I now have to take a special walker with me to go to some stores because I can't carry the items I bought because there are no carts or the carts dont go outside. I try to stay positive and be kind. And remember to smile and do something every day that makes things/the world a better place. Thank you for your videos, storytelling, radio voice, and all the interesting things going on fixing up your home, it makes me smile.
I share your opinions about the event in the supermarket. Many years ago this almost every visit to a supermarkets the cashier wanted to look into my bag. I always refused and told her if she has the improvements that I had stolen anything she should call the police. I never opened my bag! I told het its private there could be anything in there. After a couple of times I was not permitted in the shop anymore. All this checking bags makes me furious. I would never steel in a shop, really never! When i was young i worked in a luxury shop and very well know that there was security all around me. I still feel uncontrollably in shops, knowing that I am watched from all sides, with cameras or in person. By the way, I’m not so sure if you choose the right solution for your beam…… the insects are inside and have no problems with your treatments. 🙏🤞
If the store has signs displaying they may ask you to open your bag for viewing inspection before you enter, it's consensual. However if it's a situation where you're checking out and they target you like in the story you mentioned, it can be very off-putting.
Great video man! F** the supermarkets, shop local, in your local marché. This is becoming normal, but at the same time would you prefer being filmed by 5 different angles in the supermarket without having your bag searched? Is it the same violation? I think so…Everybody is a potential thief for them so…Keep up the great work.❤
When faced with 2 options, its almost always best to go with a third. In this case, option 3 would have been to do nothing. The wood was no longer insect infested and deteriorating as it was not exposed to the outside elements anymore. You've done nothing to make the piece structurally stronger but have created a work of art for yourself. And if you are satisfied with the result and the time spent doing it, then it was time well spent. For me, I would have let it be.
If any shop accused me blatantly of stealing as a customer then they should expect to be socially exposed (in a bad way) and not to see me or anyone close to me there. Therefore I’m not going to shop in any e.leclerc facility around the world.
Given the amount of beetle damage, I would have strongly considered replacing it with new green oak - a not difficult wood to acquire in France. Particularly if you're looking for crooked limbs. It would be an interesting stretch of your woodworking skills and the sort of thing I would jump at given that they don't appear to be structurally involved in supporting the roof anymore.
These timbers are often called a King Truss. Hope you doused it with wood worm killer first, although as another comment suggested they’ve probably all gone now.
'King Truss'! Thanks. I too have read that it maybe not necessary to treat the wood. But yes, Marion treated it and I watched/filmed: ruclips.net/video/zlY6TDQAyMc/видео.html
Excellent job on the wood beams. I was thinking more along the lines of a polyurethane sealer. As for the supermarket, due to the increase of bombing worldwide, most places have that policy, BUT, they should have had a large sign up, as well as asking you to leave your backpack either outside, or leave it at the guest service desk.
Sorry to hear about your experience. As an ex-security guard, I think they probably targeted you because you had been in the alcohol isle. At least you are not brown skinned. It's much worse being profiled by the police and have them threaten to cease your car unless you let them go through it, while asking you things like what you do for a living.
Love the videos, you know theres a but coming, the beam for me didnt add anything,i did my house up when i 1st moved in and took both front room and dining room chimney breasts out,not all together just back to the supporting brick which has gained us about 18 inches of space, but whatever job i do in the renovation of the house i always ask myself is this going to add to the look or give us something,im afraid me personally the "holy beam" when done didnt give me anything, butvthen again its not my house,👍
Unfortunately we live in a world that is becoming more expensive and some people are resorting to stealing. It had nothing to do with you, it was your backpack.
Checking bags in France started almost 20 or 25 years ago when we had several bombing attacks. It never really stops since that time and French people don't care about that anymore. No offense, they didn't see you as a thief, it's just policy. Remember Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité... 😅
Did you use a two-part epoxy wood filler? In the US, we have Minwax products. On severely damaged wood, I first used their wood hardener, and then their two-part high-performance epoxy. That is rock hard, and can be sculpted, sanded or whatever.
It looks superb Lewis. I'd question how many narcissistic abusers that supermarket employs, it's just the sort of position they'd be drawn to - enabling legal/quasi legal abuse.
Having one's bag inspected is quite normal. People who are not guilty need not feel affronted by a procedure aimed at curbing shoplifting, thus in the long run protecting us from price rises caused by stock losses. In a way it's like driving past a speed camera: if you're on or below the speed limit, it's no biggie and no assault on your rights as a motorist.
In the Netherlands it became normal since there was so much stolen in supermarkets to control the customers bags. It's not written on your forehead wheather you are a thief or not... 😂
Although some shops will tell you that they have a policy of searching their customers, the staff in these shops are just citizens and possess zero authority over other citizens. You can refuse. I was once grabbed by the arm and pulled into an office where they asked me to empty my pockets, all the while having an aggressive tone. I eventually got legal aid, as I was so upset. I sued and got a very large payout. RESIST.
I think it’s more a reflection on the dishonesty of others increasing in more recent times perhaps. I’m often asked if they can check my bag when I’m at check outs as my bag is rather large. I don’t take it personally as they always ask politely. Perhaps with you querying the question, the person thought you had something to hide. But sounds like they dealt with it rather poorly. The 1st language difference may have added to the tense presentation of request. Sorry it made you uncomfortable. It’s a rather sad state of affaires that it’s necessary these days.
Feeling sorry for your bad expérience in E. LECLERC. I dislike this chain even if you're right wondering where all this blind acknowledgement for security policy started... answering quick, I remember being a kid that the terror attacks in Paris in the mid 90's shifted something into our brains without notice.
l like your sense of humor, but my friend "well come to Europe" ! You are happy to find it so late ! Try to improve you french accent and it wont happend again.
I would rather be in the attic with the piece of wood too.
Awesome that you went your own way & paid homage to the original builders.
That's why we've got to grow our own food & shop at farmers markets. If we stop feeding the beast it'll cease to exist.
🎉❤🎉 Exactly....and using cash👍.
I expect your shopping experience was more for anyone else that witnessed it, so it becomes normal . Many little things are being implemented around the world that seem insignificant. They are not. Love the content and your sense of humour mate 👌
Wow, I’m shocked the supermarket has any customers left at all.
Found your channel and have binge watched my way from the beginning to the present. Just wanted to tell you that I find your style something between a David Attenborough documentary and a Monty Python skit. I don't mean that is a bad way.
I think you achieved a good outcome with your approach to the wood, given the options 👌
Thanks 👍

"I dont care because i he nothing to hide" is exactly what is wrong here which Lewis addresses.

You might think of keeping the shine. It may look great against your new walls.
You’ve done a great job with that beam. I’m sorry about that shopping experience. I hope you have other options for future grocery purchases.

Here in Northern Ontario it's normal for most grocery stores of asking people to look inside the back pack.

By the way, I’m not so sure if you choose the right solution for your beam…… the insects are inside and have no problems with your treatments. 🙏🤞
Thanks. We did a more thorough wood treatment previously: ruclips.net/video/zlY6TDQAyMc/видео.html

And if you are satisfied with the result and the time spent doing it, then it was time well spent. For me, I would have let it be.
I would have started with wood hardener then filler to provide a stronger foundation, otherwise I think you got it competely right.
If any shop accused me blatantly of stealing as a customer then they should expect to be socially exposed (in a bad way) and not to see me or anyone close to me there. Therefore I’m not going to shop in any e.leclerc facility around the world.

Did you discount vacuum infusing of epoxy resin?😉

Lewis, this is the new normal. Let it go, let it go, let it go. - Eric.
I'm in the process of letting it go. I'm a slow operator.
Never accept the unacceptable. It is merely a license for ever worsening behaviour from them.

Unfortunately we live in a world that is becoming more expensive and some people are resorting to stealing. It had nothing to do with you, it was your backpack.
You accept it at airports, there's no problem with it.
Regarder tes vidéos me calme. Merci !!
Try and inject the wood with resin. That should stabilise it better

Unexpected baggage in the item area…
Not sure how I would have handled your supermarket situation. I certainly would have reacted much more poorly than you did...
Lime Putty. Not in the backpack. On the beam. Let it mature for 30+ years.

Hmmm... Take your business elsewhere? I would also have used some sort of epoxy filler. Cheers and good luck with these matters
Dump that supermarket and shop elsewhere.
