    Thank you so much for helping me make the transition from Flash 8 to Animate. It's pretty neat to see how far these brushes and the different options for them have come.

    for some reason, my pressure sensitivity isn't working, even though I have a tablet, it doesn't want to use pressure. I've tried to test my pressure and it was working fine, but it doesn't want to work in Adobe Animate?

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  3 года назад +1

      I'd like to help, but there's a lot of variables that can lead to the pressure not working. This can be the tablet, the computer, or settings in Adobe Animate. It can also be the brush you are using. Check to make sure the pressure sensitivity is turned on for the specific brush you are using. My best advice is to look at the size settings for the bush. For the Fluid Brush If it's set to 1, then increase the size. The size setting is a maximum size, so no matter how much pressure you use it will not go beyond that size. If the pressure is on for the brush then you can adjust the Pressure property. Other brushes have other settings for size and pressure. I hope this helps.

    I drew a character with the classic brush tool, but I wanna resize it to a smaller line size, is there any way that I could resize the already drawn lines instead of redrawing the picture?

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  2 года назад

      Since the Classic Brush is a shape (the Stroke), filled with a color (the Fill), it's not simple to scale the size or width of the shape. While you can do so by using the Subsection tool and moving the points along the outer edge, or alternatively, you can merely use the eraser tool to erase around the shape. If however, you are talking about the line around the shape only, meaning the Stroke, you can change that. To do so, if the shape already has a stroke, use the Selection tool to select the Stroke, or double-click the shape itself and change the Stroke Size in the Properties panel Object tab. If the shape does not have a Stroke around it you can add one using the Ink Bottle tool.
      Let me know if that helps, and subscribe if you are happy with the tutorials.

    is there anyway to turn on a stabilizer or pen smoothing like in photoshop? the way it makes your pen drag around slower so it's easier?

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  4 года назад

      While it's not exactly like the pencil or brush smoothing in Photoshop, you do have some options in Adobe Animate that are similar, which could be what you're looking for. When you have the pencil tool selected, at the bottom of the Toolbox, you will see the Pencil Mode, which by default is set to "Straighten", which will attempt to keep the lines drawn using corner points. Clicking on that button allows you to change the settings to Smooth or Ink. Those two options will still attempt to smooth out the lines to varying degrees. You can also go to the Tool section of the Properties panel and change the smoothness settings, which are by default 50%. The bushes also have smoothness settings in the properties as well. Again, not exactly like the Photoshop settings, but gives you some control.

    brilliantly done and you did go in-depth. i will watch this again and save it for future and print out the transcript. you really covered a lot of stuff. any chance you have a tute for making custom brushes? btw, how did you make the stage layer show up on your timeline?

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  4 года назад

      I'm glad this tutorial helped. I currently do not have a tutorial on making custom brushes, but I'll record one. That will be a good one to have. As far as the Stage layer showing up on the timeline, I'm guessing you mean the thumbnails on the layer representing the shapes on the stage? If so, you can change the timeline settings by going to the timeline menu (the four horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the timeline panel) and chose "Preview". This will increase the height of the layer and add a preview thumbnail image on the frame. Hopefully this is what you wanted.

      @@StephenAnimates HELP? that doesn't even begin to say how great this was. i've subscribed so finding out how to make a custom brush. i've started a cartoon series on IG called AFLYONTHEWALL8 and the flies eyes are tiny dots like a fly has but there is nothing close to that in the brushes which is why i want to make a custom brush. they have it in PROCREATE but not in Adobe Animate. and BINGO regarding getting thumbnails in the layer. that's exactly what i was looking for. thank you again.

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  2 года назад

      While I do not use a Huion tablet (or pen display), you can try to change the settings in Animate. Look at this Adobe Help topic and read about the Smooth Curves preferences. Perhaps that will help. helpx.adobe.com/animate/using/drawing-preferences.html

    Sad that we cannot see your mouse showing elements on your screen

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  4 года назад +2

      I'm guessing you're talking about the mouse pointer disappearing? If so, I'll correct that for future videos. It's because I'm using a Cintiq and when lifting the pen from the display, the pointer will disappear.

    is there a way to change opacity with pressure

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  3 года назад

      The quick and easy answer is, unfortunately, no. When using a tablet or pen display the pen pressure changes the size of the brush, and does not have an option for opacity. The reason it would be challenging to change opacity with pen pressure is that Adobe Animate draws using vector shapes and not as a raster graphic (bitmapped). It would be really complex to draw a vector shape with a constantly changing gradient. So the pen pressure only changes the size. I am guessing you are asking so you can fade out a brush from start to finish. If it works, you could add a custom gradient to the entire shape but it would take some work to have it fade in and out along the path.

    Is there a brush with soft edges or can the edges of the brush be softend somehow?

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  2 года назад

      The quick answer is no, Animate does not have this capability. The reason is that Animate is a vector-based animation application (like Adobe Illustrator), not a bitmap-based Animation application (like Adobe Photoshop). Therefore, the brush shapes are created as lines and fills. These cannot be created with softened edges. The only sort of workaround for this is to draw out multiple brush strokes and lower the opacity of the strokes that are thicker. This can give the illusion that the edges are softer. Obviously, though this would be a lot more work.
      Alternatively, and more ideally, if that's the look you are needing, use animation software more fit for the purpose. TVPaint (www.tvpaint.com/) is strictly a bitmap animation tool. Toon Boom Harmony (www.toonboom.com/) has both bitmap and vector tools. Or try the free while in beta, Animation Paper (animationpaper.com) which is intended to mimic a traditional pencil and paper process. Then there is the open source Pencil2D (www.pencil2d.org) which has both bitmap and vector tools.
      I hope this helps. Please subscribe if you are enjoying the tutorials.

    Hey uh, can you explain why my fluid tool is greyed out and has a warning sign? Just askin'.

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  2 года назад

      Mostly likely because the Fluid Brush is GPU-based vector brush, so it must not be compatible with your graphics card. For Windows, it must be a DirectX 12 compliant GPU (with feature level 12_0 support). On the Mac a Metal compliant GPU is required. If your machine meets those requirements there may be something else going on.

    ??

    • @StephenAnimates
      @StephenAnimates  4 года назад

      I'm not sure what the cheapest graphics card you could use, but Adobe mentions two different requirements for compatibility:
      Windows: DirectX 12 compliant GPU (with feature level 12_0 support)
      Mac: Metal compliant GPU.
