    Mastersmith Kyle Royer is finishing the Damascus for the dagger called Serenity. The pattern will look amazing with beautiful layers, in fact, there are over 130k layers in the Damascus pattern!

    Pt. 1: • Making Some Damascus F...
    About The Serenity Dagger
    The blade will be 16 inches long with an aggressive taper, multiple fullers (blood grooves) on the ricasso, and one main fuller running down the blade. The blade will be made of a one-of-a-kind mosaic Damascus.
    The fittings will be gun-blued steel with gold inlays and a new technique I've been working on, Damascene.
    The handle is going to be extra special. Mom, Josh, and I just traveled 2,400 miles in search of beautiful stones and found a wonderful piece of purple/lavender Charoite. This will be my first knife to have a stone handle. I've wanted to add stone handles to my art knives for many years now and I'm so excited that the time has finally come to give it a shot!

      Your work is awesome, but would be very helpful to our mortal minds if you added some popups to the video with the units in metric, takes a lot of time converting them, specialy the temperatures, that doesn't convert right away from degrees °F to °C. Thanks!

    We use a cobalt based liner in our furnaces in the steel industry that the steel rests on in the furnace. That being said it is mainly due to wear, but also due to the thermal conductivity being closer to that of steel. The old furnace most likely has so many impurities in the surface that it has a better thermal conductivity the new one is just pure refractory and is insulating the bottom surface of the steel. Probably need to either put a sacrificial piece of that sheet metal under there or invest in a cobalt liner, or in traditional kiln work they make thinner shelves made from refractory that will hold the item up and allow it to more evenly heat and cool.

    • @mlangham179
      @mlangham179 Год назад

      Also while surface grinding you are taking off the surface of the steel which may have a different grain size according to which side is getting ground. The side facing up in the furnace most likely has a tighter structure than the other side. I don't see any cooling method on the top of the surface grinder either so most likely the metal is cooling down more slowly on the top vs the side hitting the surface grinder this also leads to thermal warping unless you are taking long breaks or heating the magnet to match the temperature of the surface. Small blades most likely wouldn't have that problem due to a lower surface area to volume ratio, same thing with thicker materials.

    I absolutely love your designs, and seeing the process of achieving such masterwork quality blades. One thing worries me though. Seeing your videos I have often noticed your posture is often very hunched over, and over time could cause significant back and neck issues ending your career as a master bladesmith prematurely. Take care of your spine so you can be doing this still in another 20 years.
