Less Crowded Texas Hill Country Towns, Mason & Rocksprings

- There are lovely small towns all across the Texas Hill Country. One that probably doesn't get the recognition it deserves is Mason. It's a lovely small town in with an interesting history. It also has more of a classic "old west" look than most towns in this part of Texas. I also stop in Rocksprings, on the far western edge of this region.

If you go to Rocksprings Hotel get rooms 221 and 223 . If it hasn't changed from about 3 years ago it's the only room on that side of hotel that is used and in original form . Claw foot tub ect . The rest of rooms on that side was pad locked but somehow in the night a lot of foot steps up and down the hall and doors opening and shutting . If you go to to he meeting spot for devil's sink hole it's just down the street . There you can see all the old photos of the past history of a tornado that went through town and a lot didn't make it . Bar across the street used to be in the old jail but I think it's moved .The lady who owns and runs the hotel is very nice and it's a very interesting stay there

Like Mason better, women from Rocksprings especially the owners from King Burger are ugly hateful ppl. Sorry but, not sorry, know them personally! Have caused lots of problems and strife to my family and my hometown.

I love mason I was born there, my mom’s family still live there as well, we love the hill country so we bought a home in granite shoals Texas because that’s where we plan to retire
My triple great grandfather from Sonora Tx in the late 1800’s left Rocksprings returning home from visiting a ranch one of his sons owned. On the trip the wagon overturned and he broke his back. He was carried to a nearby ranch where he passed the following day. Tough life back then.
For sure, the 1800s seemed to be a non-stop struggle across most of Texas

Wow, your very first scene features the Mason County Courthouse which burned down recently. In photos, it appears the exterior stone walls largely survived, so here's hoping they can just build it back the way it was. Too many times an interesting looking courthouse burned or was demolished and then replaced by a bland looking courthouse.
Yeah I didn't know about the Mason courthouse until this morning. I actually recorded this video a few months ago. Very sad.
Yes the last time we passed through going to granite shoals we noticed it had burned down which was heart breaking since I was born in mason and a lot of my moms family still lives there
Mason is the only place in Texas that you can find the Texas Topaz. Neighboring ranches offer archaeological and geology hunting areas. Oh and Mason has a Painted church too

We stayed at the Mason City RV park years ago, very nice and tree shaded. That was the first city park we ever stopped at and I have had a return visit in the back of my mind ever since. We really didn't explore the are tho, next time.
I passed thru Mason several years ago. It stuck in my mind as a,place i would like to go back to.
I visited the Seaquist Mansion way back 40 years ago. When I asked the owner how a ...I think he was a shoe store owner, afforded such a grand house, she said he won it in a poker game. Everything about the house was so beautiful, and the ballroom on the top floor with the orchestra balcony was awesomely inspiring, but the thing I remember the most was the screened in sleeping porch above the porte cochere in the tops of the pecan trees...what a dream! One of her daughters never married, because she couldn't date... she was always dusting the louvers on all the windows. I remember seeing a picture of a very handsome young cowboy in jeans, hat and brilliant white shirt, and asked the husband who that was, and he said it was is Son in 1950! After we left, we stopped to as a young cowboy directions to something...we were looking for real estate, and when we saw this blond haired, green eyed adonis, I decided I couldn't subject my girls to such temptation in such a town. Still a very vivid day.

Wow that was an awesome video. Mason sounds like a town I definitely need to visit: I even had a black-mouth cur (the breed of Old Yeller), he was a cat killing machine, and though he was friendly when I was around--he could even smile--when I wasn't he was the meanest dog in the area, according to the very professional opinion of my UPS driver.

PPS...Another sleepy Hill Country town is San Saba. It is here, I think...I would have to check my google earth app, that the trains came through, and there used to be a wonderful old two story hotel on the tracks with wonderful porches on both floors for travelers, and across the street was a bank, with what I believe was blue lapis columns on both sides of the corner entrance...such wonderful memories!
All over country, SCHOOLS used to be built to be architectural structures of beauty built to LAST. Not now. 😥

Llano, Mason, Junction, Menard, San Saba, Brady, Coleman, Bangs Santa Anna, all fine little towns in this area.
Mason is a nice little town. Great people.
Willow Creek Cafe in Mason has the best homemade chocolate cream pie.

Dreaming of moving to TX from the CA lake where they filmed the movie that ruined my childhood, Old Yeller.
Texas is great and Cali is awesome as well. I don’t wanna come off as that guy but don’t come here and vote for democrats who want to change our state. We’re working on legalizing cannabis and stuff but we like our freedom to bare arms and own a business without 100 hurdles to jump. We’re super diverse too. My best friends circle includes an Arab, a Cambodian, Mexicans, Indian folk, and black folks. In Dallas the black community has a lot of ties to Louisiana culture and east Texas. Just trust me brother. Hope you make it out!

I just want to go home. CA evicted me out of my childhood town, and burned down my tiny shop. I dont want to change TX, and I will fight the CA blue loonies invading your big cities. @@robertsutton3001 My family is related to Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone. My Native side goes back about 14k years in NC/TN areas. Im DAR, my family has served in every single war since coming here as Irish slaves in the 1600's. I owned my first gun at 10. Dropped out of college to start a business I've had for the last 30 years, and in 2020 the liberal educated kids in CA burned it down and called me a racist. I'm done here. I want to live in America! BTW The ice storms/tornadoes are a really great way to keep CA people out. Keep up the good work.

I'm curious about the Fulton Mansion in Fulton, TX. It was built in 1877, and is still standing and open for tours. Would that one be considered the oldest standing mansion in Texas?

We stayed at the Rock Springs hotel it's a nice stay close to the meeting spot for the devil's sink hole . If you go rooms 221 and 223 are the most exciting .. especially if you like ghost hunts ECT . I guess the place held a lot of people during the Spanish flu plus there was a bad tornado that went through town them pictures are in the meeting place down the street for the devil's sink hole
PS...there is an old stage coach station in the SE corner of town in Mason.
I believe there are older homes and buildings in Galveston, tx.
Yes, I will record there in the near future. That will be a much bigger task.

I tend to go to these places when it's less crowded. Plus I recorded this during the peak pandemic (months ago). Also, they aren't very crowded in general.

I thought I saw some people in the hotel but they were standing suspiciously still.

The water in Mason is radioactive, so I decided not to live there.
That whole area has bad water. My family in Brady got sick from it.
