Sometimes it's just one web and if that's the case the oil pressure will be about 10-15 psi lower than normal, but it can run a long time like that. Then all at once, the crank breaks. The block is supporting the crank, without that support the crank flexes and breaks. Eagle cranks are more commonly broken for whatever reason. I personally think that the cross-drilling that Eagle uses may contribute, but I don't think they're "weak" by any means. Weak(er)? Maybe. 302's and 289's will crack the main webs right up through the oil holes., through the lifter valley area, down the back and front bulkheads. Then when you unbolt the intake manifolds and main caps, sometimes the 2 banks will just fall away from each other. Point being,I would not be the least bit surprised if 318 blocks aren't also weak in those same areas. After all, they are passenger car blocks that are designed for maybe 300hp and 5500-6000 RPM max. Then we double the power and increase the RPM for which the OE blocks weren't designed for.
Interesting. I have heard of the ford blocks breaking in half around 500hp. I do know the 318 block weights around 40 pounds more then the ford block and has a higher nickel content. So I thinking they have a good amount of strength over the 302 351w blocks.

Gonna need a lot of JB Weld for that one.....just kidding. Nice car! Love the underdog 318 stories. The teardown reveals a lot regarding the cross-sectional thickness of the front of the block, main bearing webs, and main bearing caps. Also a good look at the overlap area of the crankshaft between journals. All of these areas can be a lot thinner than they appear before the breakage. Just curious as to what the original (first) failure was. That broken main bearing cap makes me think that may have been where it started. Good luck with the next itteration!
I love the 383! Build it up and use RB or Hemi rods and pay attention to the oil passages, and it should rev at 7,000 rpm. Of course you’ll have to pay attention to the build, oil drain back, strong enough top end etc. but it should do what you want it too.

That's worse than when my brother blew up his 318 in his Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue. The thing lost oil pressure while he was going down Route 80 at 70 miles an hour. When I pulled the oil pan off, the crank journals were blued!!! Not only that, but all the rod and main bearings looked like pieces of cut-up Coke cans, literally squished out the sides of all the rod caps and main caps. It had looked like someone cut up a Coke can and took the pieces and clamp the rod caps right over them. If you build another 318/340. The factory made steel forged cranks. Run a good forged crank with a stud girdle for the bottom end. As much he'll as your putting the engine through it needs that to keep the bottom end from flexing. The new hemis the 5.7 have a weak bottom end and prone to shooting rods. So either way there's a 2k hit.
New Subscriber here. Your carnage popped up on my feed this morning so I watched. That’s a hell of a blow up you have on this 318. I threw #3 out my oil pan in October, in my BigBlock C10. It wiped out the whole cylinder. But your destruction is much worse. Good luck with the rebuild
Beautiful!...Did you run oil lines inside the intake to the back of the cam? They tend to lose oil pressure to the cam at the back for the 273/318/340's. Nice aluminum heads wow! Nick's garage is a good one to watch.
What rods are in that engine? They held without braking after all that they're tuff stuff and if I build a motor I'm starting with your brand of rods 😉
Congratulations ! Welcome to the 600 HP on a LA block Club. You want make power like this with a small block you need a Nascar block . Last I knew they're about 5k. Good Luck finding one. My buddy went through the same thing but his was a 340 block. That was very Impressive and will make a Killer Coffee Table. Build another small block and let's get back Racing.
The Mopar small block are the best gas engine ever built in my opinion. I have made pretty good power out of 360s through the years. Nice to see the QS oil jug in the back ground you know what oil to use..God bless.
Like uncle Tony says, it could be caused by the timing chain being too tight stressing the crank when becoming hot and hence worsening the problem. Always leave a little slack.
I would like to build a 318 with a 4 inch bore.. What crank ,rod and pistons would I need for this combo? What cubic inch is your engine????? Thank You...
I would use the truck block and crank you said could handle 1600 horse-ponies without doing anything. Yeah its a newer Hemi but I wouldnt mind seeing how much potential is there and the heads probably already flow enough to get the power you need.
I'm glad you didn't wreck the car putting that much oil under the tires. Wow, that hurts. Gotta balance things like the rods to where all of them weigh EXACTLY the same to a tenth of a gram. Pistons too. Engine balance prevents a lot of this. Also enough valve to piston clearance to allow for heat expansion. Enough valve spring to rev that high for a couple hundred passes.
Please don't do a hemi swap like all the other people do.... your 318 was why I started watching your channel... 318s have been my favorite because they are so bastardized by the racing community that it is funny when ya cook some dude with a built hemi with a screaming 318... the looks you get priceless... please do another 318... remember they are only as strong g as you build it to be from the get go...stay true and safe !
Agree!! Love builds that are different just for the challenge if anything Anyone can use a Visa for a crate engine swap a newer one etc Thats all good but wont be unique
The bearing that was showed and how the block scattered ,looks to me like the mains walked . Don’t know if they make a 4bolt cap or a 6 bolt cap with side bolts to keep it from flexing like the Chevy LS block. Funny thought in my collection of books the authors says a 318 Canadian block is very heavy duty, lots of meat in bottom end. See if you can find one and see the difference.I’d say the block flexed caused a shock wave through the crank and caused the caps to bounce.
go for a small block, the 318's and other mopars are pretty bulletproof. a hemi wont exactly last as long and i have heard they are prone to some pretty bad issues(dont go for any blocks 2012 or earlier, they are weak) and their cranks even factory cant handle boost. stick with what works the best for you which is the small block mopars. my next upgrade suggestion is to go for a 323 or 360(built on the same 318 block)
Hello, where did the crank first break? Is there signs of a preexisting fracture. Wa?s the crank magnafluched? And, did the harmonic balancer have anything to do with the failure? Something failed why?
OUCH!!! 😯 What's the best the car ran with that combo? How long was it together? And lastly what's that car weigh? I'd definitely do another small block combo for now myself. As doing the retro-fit wouldn't be anything I'd want to hurry on... That would be a long-term project I'd start in Nov. A 340/416 kit or a 360/408 kit would be my starting point personally
Should have zoomed in on the frost plugs for the ney sayers too. That was a nasty motor. What a shame. Are those stock rods? What crank? I want to see the 318 A cause it’s wicked and B cause it’s more period correct. Having said that how can it not be a grenade with the pin pulled. The 5.7 would be boring but more reliable I’m sure. Lol.
I'd like to see you build your spare 318 block and put that in, if it won't take a 4" bore then put the 340 in it. Are you going to do a post mortem on why the crank broke?
A stroker 318 for sure.... Even bone stock 3.310 cranks will rev nicely but those 4.0 stroker cranks from Eagle aren't going to love 7000 plus. Higher quality stuff , Callies, Howards Crower etc would be good to that rpm most likely. I'd keep the Eagle 4.0 stroker cranks to 6500 or so. With the right cam like the solid roller circle track grind from Howards...2800-6400 it would haul ass
I’d say stick with the LA, but would like to know what crank and rods you had and what oil mods did you do, if any. Would like to know the cause of the failure and build it better.
WOW.. I've seen a new level of one letting go now! Great video man! What t-stat housing and radiator hose are you using? Mine leaks profusely! THANKS! (new sub)
Sad to see the destruction. Maybe it's time to move on to the gen 3 hemi. It's clearly been on your mind. 6.4 would be good to see you run in that car.
Throw one of the 340’s in it. I have a 340 block Im looking to put in my 73 Duster. Sorry for your blown engine but looking forward to what you decide on doing with the build.
See if you can get a 318 machined for splayed 4-bolt mains. I've had a couple of mopars with stock 318's and they are solid engines. Before I saw clearly what was damaged I suspected this one had 2 bolts and though they are strong ,600 HP was probably more then they were designed for. looking forward to weeing where you take this project next.
Well I just saw the carnage that was 318 and now it should become a shrine of inspiration. Where to go from here ??? Here is my 2 cents of advice. Fyi I've been driving mopars since I was 17 so almost 40 years and my first car i bought was a 1969 Dart GTS 340 4 speed car, and my first vround jp bud was my 69 dart GT convertible that I pulled the 318 and put in a 440 / 727 auto , 8.75 with 3.55 sure grip. Still have her and i bought that car in 1989. i share this with you to let you know my 2 cents is valid info So first consideration is budget next is time frame ,next is what is your style? Are you junkyard buy and drop it and go , or taking the engine and go through it , run if up before it goes into your a body barracuda? I was exactly where you are now , when Covid began. My 340 cam went flat and metal destroyed the engine. Not quite to the level as yours. So I started putting lists together for what I was going to need for going 1 of 3 ways. Repair and rebuild the 340, or a LA small block, or go big block. Last the hemi upgrade option. So my approach has been, it only is original once so that was my avenue. In Ca. where I live engine builders / machine shops have closed up , moved , retired or for quit and said fy to Ca. The 340 had been built 2 previous times prior. You can get a new hemi 5.7 new from mopar for 6k + tax and shipping. ,There are alot of companies like ATK that want 4k for a reman 5.7. if your approach is budget and use what you have, than go thtu the heads and have them gone through looking for dropped valve seats on the exaust valves. i ended up getting a blue print 408 stroker and it took over a year for it to be built dynoed and shipped out to me. I went all in with fuel injection and serpentine accessories drive kit. 12.5 k was total . Tax was 1200 by itself. I had maxed out my C.c and had made my choice. The hemi conversion is harder on A Bodies because the parts available for B and E bodies are not available for us. That is changing day by day. The path I want to take is bring the convertible into the 21st century with a full frame 4 link and coil overs and everything from cooling with A/C 4 wheel disc brakes etc. The parts to get the engine up and running on a stand, ready to be dropped in was 20k.for me because I didn't Have an engine to use as a core nod transmission. So the accessories, headers , holly controller etc. Not sure how much of the work you. Were going todo. For by budget that sas 0 dollars for labor. Since i do my own work. This was the budget build numbers. I knew things were going to be more when all was said in done.. While I was waiting on my engine i found a few other options. 1 mopar itroduced the Hellephant summit wanted 50k, the prices have dropped a bit. They also released a New 340 six pack engine carbs to pan 20k. over in Australia they started selling new 340 engines complete 15k US and would take months to to get .here. In closing if you have everything to build a LA engine put one in go that route, and unless you have forged crankshaft 7000 rpm should be avoided. Starting to fall asleep.hope the numbers helped . I wish you luck and am very sorry for your loss.
It's only a casting, it's (was) 408 cubic inches if I remember correctly. Just sayin'. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's not REALLY a 318. In the spirit. But STILL a genuine badass none the less.
Hey bud I love that you were giving the 318s love. I'd keep running them to be honest. 7k is a little much for the chrysler small block. 6400 is usually were you want to be. I've never seen someone destroy a 318 like that so my hats off to you.
Well you already have the heads, intake and carb for a small block, plus the car is setup for a small block so if you ask me grab one of the 340's or the 318 you have sitting there, throw a rotating assembly in it, bolt the top end on and drop the new engine in. BUT! you do have all those hemi's laying around, and we all know them gen 3's can make some wicked power, so if you're really feeling up to hemi swapping it now would be the time. Best of luck, hope to see the Barracuda back up and running soon.
I definitely enjoy the 318 content. I'd stick with that. Your car is great because you're hurting feelings with a 318. It's more unique and entertaining with a 318.
Put the 392 in it with a hellcat blower when funds allow…but definitley put one of them modern hemis in there and then work your way to boost in any shape or form….take off hellcat blowers can be found for a decent price…kinda like the Lsa blowers for us LS guys….there not $500 like they used to be 10 yrs ago but you can still find a good one for around $1000/$1300……or just up it to $2000/$2200 and get a factory new one…….damn you blew that 318’s face out!!! Major carnage
Please, not another Hemi swap. I had that idea myself for my Duster years ago, but now when everybody does it it's way cooler to go 318! You have learned a lot and next 318 you build will be even better!
You could build a 400 winter block. A very under square engine, more so than the 340 I believe. Largest bore of any Mopar v8. Would be interesting to see how high you can make it rev.
If you put a 340 main cap next to a 318 cap you will see why it is taller and stronger. Something I knew in 1968. That is why you should go with a 340 block and a Summit stroker kit ...something like 416 c.i.
Keep a small block in it.... you are an inspiration for us LA SB lovers with their potential you've shown us..
I'm sorry for your loss, but damn! That is the most impressive carnage I have seen! And I watch every video from I Do Cars!

Wow, I have always been into 440's, first time I seen a 600hp 318. I subscribed
They are scat
been watching you from the start, my heart says go with another 318
but this setback might be the start of something new, maybe
Congratulations ! Welcome to the 600 HP on a LA block Club. You want make power like this with a small block you need a Nascar block . Last I knew they're about 5k. Good Luck finding one. My buddy went through the same thing but his was a 340 block. That was very Impressive and will make a Killer Coffee Table. Build another small block and let's get back Racing.
The Mopar small block are the best gas engine ever built in my opinion. I have made pretty good power out of 360s through the years. Nice to see the QS oil jug in the back ground you know what oil to use..God bless.
A waffle 413 truck motors are strong but that a lot of changing They are a strong block . All the best . Brian in Tasmania .
Like uncle Tony says, it could be caused by the timing chain being too tight stressing the crank when becoming hot and hence worsening the problem. Always leave a little slack.
🔥
or 7000 rpm
I, too, have nuked a small block in a barracuda. Good times👍 6.4 would be a wicked unit. Good luck man.
I would like to build a 318 with a 4 inch bore.. What crank ,rod and pistons would I need for this combo? What cubic inch is your engine????? Thank You...
Is that a Eagle Crank by any chance?
I would use the truck block and crank you said could handle 1600 horse-ponies without doing anything. Yeah its a newer Hemi but I wouldnt mind seeing how much potential is there and the heads probably already flow enough to get the power you need.
factory block, crank, rods and pistons.. just needs a decent sized turbo and then be able to handle fuel management (i.e. Holley EFI)
@@Dirtnap300 Turbo? Come on, not another turbo build FFS!!! I could toss a turbo on my lawn mower and it'd make 600hp, what's the fun in that? SMH
@@Anarchy-Is-Liberty 600hp 318 ! it must idle at 2500 , its a pretty Big number for a street car .
318, one hot small Block. A great performer for no bigger than it is.
You win the 1st place prize for blowing up an engine. Carnage. So sorry for your loss. Build that 340. Cool video! Build on!!
Time for a high end crankshaft ?
Amazing 318 work! I check out your channel sometimes. I have a 318. I may turbo it for more power though. Stay fly!
1971 360 block ,heavy cylinder walls can take a over bore if you dare of 4.1 inches sonic check it first. Then stroked kit.
My thoughts exactly.
Agree!! Love builds that are different just for the challenge if anything
Anyone can use a Visa for a crate engine swap a newer one etc
Thats all good but wont be unique
You may have junked it... BUT GLORY FOREVER! That's a bad ass looking car. Maybe we can run em down track sometime. Fuel the brand rivalry.
Stay 318 or go magnum , i wouldnt go hemi gen if it was my car , incredible what you did with the little 318
Hello, where did the crank first break? Is there signs of a preexisting fracture. Wa?s the crank magnafluched? And, did the harmonic balancer have anything to do with the failure? Something failed why?
OUCH!!! 😯
What's the best the car ran with that combo? How long was it together?
And lastly what's that car weigh?
I'd definitely do another small block combo for now myself. As doing the retro-fit wouldn't be anything I'd want to hurry on... That would be a long-term project I'd start in Nov.
A 340/416 kit or a 360/408 kit would be my starting point personally
⁰
Sorry to see that man. That 318 is a monster and ran hard so you have that on record so dealers choice on the next motor!an that Cuda is beautiful 👍😎
Good lord! That 318 got mangled! Sorry fer your loss, that window is pretty big!
Old iron came out, so old iron has to go back in. Those 340s are stout little beasts. However she goes back together, it's gonna run like no other.
Keep on keepin on man
That 3 18s really digging in. Power shift here we go lol
I see what you did there...nice!
@@gordocarbo I heard it happened at the strip where the road is wide.
Even bone stock 3.310 cranks will rev
nicely but those 4.0 stroker cranks from Eagle aren't going to love 7000 plus.
I believe he was using a eagle crank and scat rods, eagle cranks are notorious for breaking out of the blue
What most likely happened, is that the piston wall cracked, water in to the cylinder and it hydrauliced. What was the bore size?
WOW.. I've seen a new level of one letting go now! Great video man! What t-stat housing and radiator hose are you using? Mine leaks profusely! THANKS! (new sub)
Your missus looks happy you have engine parts all over the laundry room your a master at this shit
Sad to see the destruction. Maybe it's time to move on to the gen 3 hemi. It's clearly been on your mind. 6.4 would be good to see you run in that car.
Any clue as to what triggered this failure? Was the crank reground?
Miscellaneous Oddball Parts Assembled Radically!!!!!
Keep Rocking!!!
Your so invested in smallblock configuration, it will cost a good amount more to change to Hemi
Still have her and i bought that car in 1989. i share this with you to let you know my 2 cents is valid info
So first consideration is budget next is time frame ,next is what is your style?
That is a badge of honor Ive never blown anything that bad!
Bet if he worked on the oiling system it may have lived longer
Personally I’d go with the 392 or the 340 can make some power as well. Keep us posted,
Yup and a 261 can aswell
@@shadowopsairman1583 yes sir!
100 % Correct
Put the 392 in it with a hellcat blower when funds allow…but definitley put one of them modern hemis in there and then work your way to boost in any shape or form….take off hellcat blowers can be found for a decent price…kinda like the Lsa blowers for us LS guys….there not $500 like they used to be 10 yrs ago but you can still find a good one for around $1000/$1300……or just up it to $2000/$2200 and get a factory new one…….damn you blew that 318’s face out!!! Major carnage
I assume that’s a cast crank. I’d like to see how well it would hold together with a steel crank.
You already have the right combination there.
I'm wondering my self if that's a cast crank.
@@N-Lee By the appearance of the break, it looks like a cast crank
@@rollydoucet8909 Ahh. Thank You.
What brand crank? We had a cast eagle 383 sbc break just like that right through the big lightning hole in rod journal. Was quite ugly lol
Please, not another Hemi swap. I had that idea myself for my Duster years ago, but now when everybody does it it's way cooler to go 318! You have learned a lot and next 318 you build will be even better!
Long live the 318 and here’s to new power! That car is badass!!!!
You could build a 400 winter block. A very under square engine, more so than the 340 I believe. Largest bore of any Mopar v8. Would be interesting to see how high you can make it rev.
Oh Racer Brown in Md Makes custom Mopar roller camshafts , and Hughes got me Morel Lifters. Jim Dow
If you put a 340 main cap next to a 318 cap you will see why it is taller and stronger. Something I knew in 1968. That is why you should go with a 340 block and a Summit stroker kit ...something like 416 c.i.
Used to have them in some of the police cars, the 265 would leave em behind, the Monaro 350 GTS would leave both police cars behind.
