It's astounding how truly talented Eddie Murphy was, even at such a young age. This film is one of the greatest comedies of the 80s, IMO.

A word about what kind of man Don Ameche (Mortimer Duke) was. Director Jon Landis REALLY wanted him for the role but when he saw in the script that he had to curse, he said he would need to be permitted to apologize to the cast and crew and asked that as few ladies as possible be on the set at the time. And the scene when he would have to drop the N-bomb, he said to Landis that he better have at least 2 cameras running, quiet set, make sure the microphones were working properly, etc. because he would only get one take, one shot, because he would only say that word one time. Landis agreed. He later said in an interview that acting is an honorable profession that does not necessarily require you to compromise your dignity as a human being.
It's also sometimes moral to portray immoral people. The Duke brothers are very good examples of very bad people.
Fun Fact: Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, really didn't like to curse, so he screams "Fuck him!", he actually apologized beforehand to the entire cast, crew on the set and did the scene in one take. A true professional.
Another Fun Fact: The cop who says mockingly "it's an opera" back to Winthorpe is Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda. The more you know!
I love how that first fact is attributed to Ameche not wanting to say THAT, but I don't hear a similar fact for the scene where he had to say ni**er 😆
The Dukes' trader, Wilson, was Richard Hunt, who performed as Scooter, Janice, Sweetums, Beaker and other Muppets.
Did he apologise before dropping the N bomb? 😅
The same Frank Oz who also directed Little Shop of Horrors '86 / The Muppets Take Manhattan / Dirty Rotten Scoundrels / What About Bob? / The Dark Crystal (alongside the late Jim Henson), and appeared as the Property Clerk in The Blues Brothers / Test Proctor in Spies Like Us / Mr. Collins in An American Werewolf in London / puppeteered the Wiseman in Labyrinth, no less!

The quote "here's Johnny!" is not originally from The Shining. They actually took it from The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was the host. Every night when they introduced him as he came out on stage the announcer would say "heeeeerre's Johnny!!"
Now you need to see the sequel - "Coming to America" - Ok so its not a direct sequel but it does reveal what happened to Duke and Duke after the Frozen Orange Juice debacle... Also well worth the watch!!!

I agree about Curtis' near perfection, but to be fair she was 24 when she made this film. The fact that she looked just as good 15 years later for True Lies is the real sign of her superior genetics. Most 24-year-old women look good.

Ive seen this movie a million times & i never realized how dark it gets w/ Louis trying to kill himself until watching reactors react to it.
Also, the "here's Johnny" line is originally from the Johnny Carson show. Jack Nicholson just says it in the movie.

Franken first gained fame as a writer and performer on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live.

Such a fun movie. Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd, and Jamie Lee Curtis all in their primes, and throw in Denholm Elliott for shits and giggles is a recipe for an awesome time .
This is a classic. When I was a kid, my only exposure to Eddie Murphy were his kids movies. This is the first movie I saw where he wasn't a loveable kids hero. Great movie that got me into his standup!
What’s funny is my childhood was the opposite haha I only saw him in his rated r comedies, so when I saw he was in shrek and daddy day care, for example, I was shocked

I freakin’ love it when Eddie breaks the 4th wall in the commodities scene. Such a perfect Murphy moment. It’s like an invitation into his world. He builds deep camaraderie with the audience and you are instantly aware of (and appreciate) his point of view. Such a masterful artist.
I love opening credits sequence, showing us the difference between working-class Philadelphians starting their day vs. Coleman preparing Winthorpe's breakfast, while the music is the overture to Mozart's _The Marriage of Figaro_ (an opera about servants pulling one over on an abusive nobleman). Does a great job of setting up the "prince/pauper" theme of the film.
Is that not the most satisfying end to a movie you’ve ever seen? Love it!

7. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. He also had an issue with the N word.
8. There's an Easter egg in "Coming to America" with the Duke brothers. Eddie Murphy at his best.

Eddie Murphy has to be one of the funniest people on the planet. His facial expressions and the way he talks are always perfect for the role he's playing. This movie, 48 hours with Nick Nolte, and Beverly Hills Cop are the kind of movies that you never get tired of watching.

One of my favorite comedy movies. I got a movie reaction suggestion for you it's one of my favorites, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.

The guy in the ape costume is Jim Belushi, brother of Blues Brothers and Animal House actor John Belushi, star of According To Jim, and nowadays is a lot farmer who has his own brand of gummies and edibles.
When I was a kid in the 80's, this one, Best Defense...anything with Eddie. When I got older and he was in Shrek, my kids thought it was funny how much I laughed at Donkey. I said "just wait 'till you're older...you'll see.

Late to the party, but just providing some info about the baggage handlers on the train. They were Al Franken and Tom Davis, a comedy writing team for the early days of SNL. Of course, Franken served as a US senator for nearly a decade. Davis was a successful screenwriter who unfortunately died at the age of 59 from cancer.

The cop who checked Winthorp in, finding the PCP... Frank Oz, a director and friend of this movie's direstor, but also the puppeteer and voice between Miss Piggy, Fozzie and Yoda among many others.
"Can you invest in me?" LOL! I've felt the same way every time I watch that scene, going back to when adolescent me first saw the film on HBO in the late 1980s.
By the way, that gorgeous bosom and figure of hers are completely natural. Her revealing it in all its glory came as quite a shock to folks used to the relatively lanky and very clothed Jamie Lee Curtis from the "Halloween" films.

Before "Here's Johnny!" was in the Shining, it was Ed McMahon catch phrase when he introduced Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. The Shining took it from that and made it creepy.

My first semester of college, back in '00, my sociology professor had us watch this movie - we were analyzing the *NATURE vs NURTURE* question posed by the Dukes which led to their bet.
The Duke Brothers in this movie are IMO some of the greatest movie villains of all time.

So many quotes from this movie got me laughing just thinking about them..."just where is your b**ches, mister big time pimp??" ..the more random the better. I like the nod to the "Rocky" statue in the opening montage, a movie that only came out 7 years before this one. Murphy's charisma is off the charts, it's hard to convey just how big he was back then but think Brad Pitt or Elvis.
