Alfa Romeo Giulia 2023 review: Greater than the sum of its parts?

- The Alfa Romeo Giulia has always been an interesting and likeable alternative to executive car rivals such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but because it trailed it rivals slightly in a variety of area, it's not always been and entirely convincing one.
However, the car has just been facelifted for 2023, bringing improvements in a variety of areas. The looks have changed, with new front and rear lights and a new front grille design. Inside, there's a slightly revised infotainment system with improved functionality and over-the-air updates. What's more, the engine range has been slimmed down to leave only a single choice, a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with 280 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. So, can these changes make the difference and put the Giulia closer to its enormously popular rivals?
In this CarGurus UK video, Deputy Editor Ivan Aistrop answers that very question by assessing every part of the revised Giulia, including its quality, practicality, technology, value for money, and of course, what it's like to drive.

The CarGurus verdict
Although we can’t point to any particular area where the Giulia betters its German rivals, it is a car that feels greater than the sum of its parts. The fit and finish and the quality of the cabin materials may not be up to German standards, but there’s no denying the appeal of the imaginatively designed dash, the excellent driving position and the generous amount of interior space. There’s also no shortage of equipment, while most drivers will appreciate the labour-saving benefits of a standard automatic gearbox.
Granted, the driving experience could be better, but given the right roads, the Giulia is still capable of an intoxicating experience, while the engines deliver an excellent mix of performance and economy, along with an engaging soundtrack. Some will argue that Audi, BMW and Mercedes all do it better, but that would be a rather blunt appraisal, ruling out the Giulia’s inherent elegance and emotional appeal. Given the sort of money used examples are currently changing hands for, it would also be overlooking their incredible value.
Pros
Very attractive styling
Ferocious performance from Quadrifoglio
Emotional appeal of the Alfa badge
Cons
Not as comfortable or refined as German rivals
Some owners report electrical gremlins
No estate version

I’m fortunate enough to have a quadrifoglio and it still blows me away every time I sit in it after 4 years of happy ownership. Simply stunning car.
Same! Hands down the best car I've ever owned...
Same with me.
I can’t help feeling the QV is arguably the best super sedan ever created.
Same here.
And same here my trofo white quadrifoglio is sublime every day for the last 2 years I still pinch myself
So is it more fun than M3?
This review is seriously flawed with the steering. No problem with it at all. I suspect that tyre pressures were out. Either that or the reviewer is a BMW fanboy.
I'm a bit confused as to why you're saying the very responsive and light steering is a negative? It's one of the best features of the car - absolutely perfect drivability. I've got a 2020 Guilia Veloce and it's without doubt much better than the German "equivalents".
"Likeable" ?? - No she's drop dead bloody gordeous, a delight to drive, light, fast and balanced and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the steering that a few days behind the wheel will not easily cure. "Like" is a word I use for describing custard tarts or the Isle of Wight. I don't "Like" my Guilia, I love her and she loves me back. The only problem is that other guys love her too (I see them looking at her) But she's mine and they only get to look - but i get to drive! 🙂
I absolutely love my Giulia Veloce, beautiful to look at in Misano Blue, wonderful to drive and it stands out from the bloated, monochrome roadscape of 2023.
I love the rarity too, it always draws in admiring glances.
Zero negatives and a proper rear wheel drive Alfa!!!!
Congrats.
One is not a true petrolhead if never owned an Alfa Romeo.
Handling is for proper drivers, not for people who don’t pay attention to what they are doing.
This is not a machine for just A to B trips, but A to B with character and driving excitement!
True, driving my late 2016 Giulia always keeps me focused on the joy of driving. Both hands on the wheel, tip of my fingers on my flippers and eyes on the adventure ahead.
Dude has no clue on how to test or drive a car. The Giulia is a masterpiece built for competent drivers.
If this guy doesn’t like the steering of the Giulia Veloce it doesn’t surprise me he’s married to the German rivals. The Alfa is the drivers choice!
Wow, if the quick steering doesn’t fill you with joy, you are definitely better off sticking with a German car. The steering is bloody fantastic imo, maybe your touch is a bit heavy or you didn’t drive it enough to get used to it. I see plenty of comments about the brakes causing concern too, again something you need to get used to.
I have the Stelvio. Hate the brakes. It’s the 2018 4 cylinder but those brakes are really hard to get used to you. It’s my wife’s car so granted I don’t daily it.
The Veloce has amazing handling, pinpoint. Not sure what this reviewer is talking about re the steering.
I have a 2018 Veloce with the adaptive suspension that is in the quad and q2 sports differential and it’s the best handling saloon I’ve ever driven.
The quad with its extra grunt and wonderful sound must be an absolute joy to own and drive.
Correct
Had my 2019 giulia since 2020 and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned no competition. Looks the best and drives the best, VIVA ALFA!!!!!
Disagree on the steering point. I'm coming from an E91 328xi so the bar was set high for steering feel and handling. The Giulia by far has the best rack when compared to the M340i, S4 and C43. I tested them all, and all were disappointing. I went with a turbo 4 cylinder just to have the steering vs the magnificent B58 engine, that's how good the steering and chassis tuning in the Alfa is.
Agree with you the steering is great. Right on point. You have to adjust a little to the quick rack, but once you do the twitchiness disappears and most other cars feel sloppy. Only my Cayman S had better steering than this.
You're off your rocker with this review, mate. Disappointingly wrong and misguided.
Giulias are brilliant.
All Alfas are brilliant.
Alfa made a great product and then forgot to advertise it.
All the budget went to engineering. They coudlve hired an internet savvy intern to market for free.
Imagine Alfa Romeo shitposts that were actually good. Maybe younger people would know about it, but the car enthusiasts connesuier and or the individual who wants to be different already knows about it
Alfa could really market itself as the passionate drivers brand amongst a sea of copy paste shareholder brands
youre off on your own mate with the opinion about the steering...one quickly adjusts to the quick rack...and youre also off on your own island about the 3 series being a better dynamic drive...the consensus on even the latest generation 3 series is that its considered inferior dynamically (due to weight and mandatory AWD)...but i guess everyone is entitled to their opinion...personally i wouldnt be caught dead in 90% of the current BMW line up on aesthetics alone, never mind the fact that i dont want to drive an iPhone.. these will become cult classics while the BMW will always be the camry of sports sedans...and they get uglier with each new model, sadly.
Agree on all your points. And that front grille on the BMW. Utterly ridiculous.
This is in my opinion the car enthusiast connoisseur's driver's choice in the segment! As the German trio has become increasingly complex with gizmos and the transition of electrification. The Alfa also upstages the German trio for design/styling, sophistication, and exclusivity.
2021, 280 Veloce: Wonderful bit of kit. Most entertaining car I've owned. Surprises me everytime I drive it. When you drive it you become one with it. You sit in it not on it. Saving for QV.
I'd buy this BECAUSE it's not one of the obvious German 3...
Dafuq you on about ?! It does NOT have The same dynamics as a BMW ? You drunk ? 😂 its quite unanimous that giulia tops The 3 series 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Which materials aren't as plush as rivals?
The steering criticism is unfair. It only takes a period of adjustment.
It's racing steering, modelled on ferrari , I had to avoid a big bird wondering into the road , whilst I was doing 60, and I was very glad of its quickness and precision .
Yikes. This review couldn't be more off base in terms of steering. It's exceptional. Not as precise as a 3 Series? Laughable haha. Snooooze....next review.
All other cars seem boring compared to the driving feel of the Giulia.
after two days of driving steering is the best!
Really odd review. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia now has lsd as standard and was always class leading in terms of ride quality over a mixture of surfaces as various magazines pointed out when it won their best in class tag when first launched and who said the suspension was something well above its price/class and something only Lotus could equal for composure over all road surfaces while maintaining good comfort, not stiff and buttoned up compared to German cars and in particular compared to BMWs. For driving pleasure and reliability and looks the Alfa Romeo stands out. If the buying concerns are incar entertainment or comfort or interior plushness then maybe German or Japanese cars, though Alfa Romeo remain acceptable in those areas also.
Sorry but nobody buys a Giulia to load cargo to the boot...
That is exactly what I was thinking. Who cares..
Mercedes' hyperscreen offers a screen size of 56 inches, one inch larger than the Cadillac Celestiq and eight inches larger than the Lincoln Nautilus. Others worth mentioning include the Cadillac Escalade (38 inches), Lucid Air (34 inches) and Buick LaCrosse (30 inches). Alfa Romeo has different priorities because internal research has shown that customers don't really want huge screens that stretch from one corner of the dashboard to the other.
Speaking to Autocar, the Italian carmaker's boss, Jean-Philippe Imparato, said that future models would not get massive screens: "Of course, I respect what Mercedes is doing with its digital technology, but my customers are not looking for one-meter-wide infotainment screens or 200 digital on-off assistance systems." He went on to say that the typical Alfa customer doesn't want to know what the weather will be like in three weeks because they just want to drive the car.
I had a 2020 Giula in Misano Blue with a white interior. Damn, it was gorgeous! I loved that car. I was very pleased with it and would get another one in a heartbeat. The German cars are lovely but the Giulia is a great alternative with a fun personality.
Why is this car so Beautiful and are others so ugly?.
"Giulia still doesn't have the dynamic precision of a 3-series..." - Give me a break.
Please Alfa, give us a Mid range V6 model to rival the likes of the Audi S4 and BMW M440i. The Quad is very nice but it is too expensive, and the lesser models have a generic sounding 4 cylinder turbo.
I enjoyed watching the Video Review. A great alternative to Its rivals 😊
Great car but a dull review
A well balanced quick review as always Ivan. Although I've been a fan of Alfa since I was a kid many years ago I've never owned one due to life circumstances. The Giulia has got closer to any other though an this face lift moves it further up the list of a possible future test drive. It may not be as clinical as some of the competition but Alfa still seem to inject some soul into the drive and the style. Personally I'd consider checking out a used example as residuals may not be as good as the other options. I love that its different and not just another me too car that some brands arguably might be. Many thanks for sharing.
The very fabric of these comments speak volumes; they present correct grammar and employ sound structure. That tells me that the people who wrote them are educated, passionate and eloquent; in other words, they’re not idiots, they wouldn’t hold back if dissatisfied and given the name-dropping of brands in relation to their test driving histories, they are clearly reasonably affluent too. When people of this calibre throw their lot behind a car, you know that the car is credible.
Me? There are several V8 and V6 engined cars in my garage. Everything that I hear from these comments indicates to me that if I wanted to add a 4-cylinder car to my collection, the Giulia Veloce is probably where I should be looking.
How comfortable is the access (entering and exiting) for a tall person (1.87m)?
I like the car but why does Alfa Romeo still not offer 360 degree parking sensors? The digital dials should also show the navigation map. Is it also available in 4 wheel drive?
Best looking model out there against the obvious 3. However, why did it take them so long to facelift it? I mean most manufacturers bring in a brand new model approximately every 7 years. Alfa's doing a facelift? I'm afraid it might not be enough to keep sales going. It's starting to remind me of the R35 story.
The front license plate location. LOL.
Im confused about the headlights
Most video in here saying 2023 models with new headlights led
But in US 2023 headlight are not updated like this 2023 model in here
Have they dropped the Diesel option for the 2023 facelift ??
Is this standard Red or paid Etna color?
Great video Ivan - a quirky but cool car - it's an Alfa !
You are talking not right. By far best cars in the class. Giulia is proper drivers car. I know many people who tried my diesel giulia and they switched to giulia from bmw. When im in there i dont care about screen. I enjoy driving it
To stand out buy an Alfa. To be ordinary buy a German car.
It's also about 100kg lighter than previous editions. Poor review imo.
How is this a first attempt at the segment when the heritage for the car is the 155 and 156
The Italian firm's, not the Italians' first.
Good grief this was an uninsightful review.
Correcting an error in the review - The ‘Q2’ does not refer to the LSD. It’s just the rear wheel drive designation vs Q4 (awd), as available in the US. There were Q2 Giulias before 2021 when the LSD was. Introduced as standard vs being part of a performance package. I’ve had a ti sport (equivalent to veloce) since last year, and it’s just a phenomenal drivers car. Stock, the 4 cylinder is good fun, but imo a few very light tweaks, like an ECU tune like those from squadra (that brings it to >320bhp) and a slightly meatier exhaust back box like a Remus, it still drives and sounds like it’s factory, but just ‘woken up’ - and is more than you need for the street!
Not quite. Rwd non lsd are just plain Giulias and don’t get either Q4 or Q2 badge. Q2=lsd
That front reg plate tho.
That’s why the Aldi and B#W now try to copy it , have you seen the new front grill on the new B#W. 🤣
I love Alfas but I want a conservative conventional dials and manual gearbox, I am a caveman
Might not be the best but it's still the best looking! No stick shift option is an absolute travesty! 😂
The offset number plate would drive me nuts.
Why? Just tested mine but no mather in what position I was sitting behind the steerinig wheel…could never see my front plate. 😂
This guy should find another job. Who paid you to knock a masterpiece? BMW?😮
Bla bla bla. Bottom line - it’s fecking gorgeous 🤪
I love Alfa Romeo but to buy one would be a case of heart ruling the head.
Not if you love driving it isn't.
Not any more, reliability is up there with the competition, the eyes can afford to over rule the head with those looks too
Looks the same
is it just me or has this 'facelift' made it look worse?
It's just you.
@@rlsedition seems that way! The new lights look like the Tonale, which is a slightly oddly proportioned car, maybe that's why I'm not a fan
Only an Alfa anorak will even notice the differences imo
@@murrayrogers I agree, the exterior differences are not immediately obvious; however, I would posit the exterior didn't need massive revisions - it was (and still is) the best looking sedan in its class. The interior changes are more impactful, as the gauges and infotainment are all digital and improved. And it doesn't have an ugly/afterthought, upright info screen above the dash (looking at you, BMW 3 series).

Terrible review!
I would love it if it wasn’t for climate change. My next car has got to be solar/electric.
Sure, so then you'll be using fossil fuels for the batteries electrical power. Zero emissions my a$$!
I love an Alfa Romeo. Far better looking than the German drivel. The downside of Alfa ownership is you end up on first name terms with the dealership.
That’s rubbish
I have 2018 Guilia and have not had any problems. Want to talk about unreliability then look at Jags.
I am on first name terms with the dealership and I haven’t see them or spoken to them since the day after I bought my car
You'd better check the forums, as Giulas seem to be quite reliable cars.
My 21 has had no problems so far.
lol, Just look at it! Best looking saloon car on sale.
