- The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, simply the "Quadrifoglio" or "Giulia QV" is a D Segment Sports Sedan rivaling others such as the BMW M3, Mercedes Benz C63 AMG or Audi RS4, although the latter is only offered in "avant" form.
In my opinion, the Italian car is just as good, or better, than it's aforementioned rivals, and yet, it doesn't sell nearly as well. Why? Well, that's what I'm going to tell you in this video and review by Abriatus of the Manual Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde 2017.
This car, has the 2.9 Biturbo Engine sourced from Ferrari connected to a 6 speed manual gearbox (MT6), one of the few true drivers cars of the era. It was sold in the United States, Canada, the UK, Germany, Italy and Australia among many other markets across Europe and the World.
One thing I didn't mention in the video: depreciation. Surprisingly, and unlike most other Alfas, these Giulia QVs haven't depreciated all that much. Another reason to get one. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Cheers! :)
Never seen one of these with a manual and didn't think they were sold as such. At least not in the US. Where was this filmed?
@@justinmaccreery2490 This was filmed in Spain. The 6 speed manual transmission was a no-cost option for the Giulia QV until 2019, if I'm not mistaken, in all of Mainland Europe.
My impression is the very first early handful of models were made in manual gearboxes - they are quite rare.
no special alfa depreciates. Only diesel models and common models. The 4C is almost double of the price when it was new.

Correct, and you can get a cheap tune to give it 320hp. The AWD version is a sexier Subaru STI. It is a 4 door sedan that drives on rails. No regrets. ❤

100% agree. I’ve had an F30 3-series, Jaguar XE and Mercedes C-class before my Giulia and none of them come close to the way this beauty drives

Great summary - I have a 2022 Quadrifoglio and it is the best car I have ever owned. It makes me mad when ignorant people dismiss it as being somehow inferior to the mainstream German sports saloons - it is better than all of them!

Maintenance costs are just too high for most people. The reason Alfa is losing their footing in the US is because their quality control here is frankly just awful.
I’m a die hard Alfista , I had a Giulia Veloce on lease for 3 years and absolutely loved it . I’m on my 8th Alfa and currently own an 88 Sprint QV and a 06 GT i picked up for peanuts but like all Alfas , once they hit rock bottom in value , they soon start to climb again because there’s something so special about them

Nice review. It may be different where you live, but one of the two big off-putting factors (in the UK at least) is the sparse nature of the dealer network. The other factor, and this is not the Giulia's fault at all, is the perception that Alfa's are unreliable. That reputation has been earnt over decades (not all of it fair) so that now, when Alfa finally produce some very respectably reliable vehicles, not enough people trust the brand. But one other point in favour of buying the QV you are considering other Giulia models (which, in all fairness, are also extremely good) is that you will keep feeling that deep pang of regret every time you see a QV on the road. Unless you are a cat, you only live once - so go have some real fun and buy a QV!
I’m getting the 2.0 because it’s my first venture into the brand and I need a daily driver as well. The tune available for them brings you up to around 320-330 hp which is more than enough for driving around town everyday 😅. It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast especially in an urban area
Custom ordered a 2017 Giulia Quad and never looked back. Unfortunately 6 speed manual is not available in the US (nor anymore is Europe I believe). In any event, BEST CAR HANDS DOWN.
All I can say is this is absolutely correct - and a travesty. Agree entirely and as a committed Alfisti who owned a 75 V6 and most subsequent Busso engined Alfas, the Giulia QV is the pinnacle of Alfa Romeo ownership and all the car you could possibly need.

Quadrifoglio owner here. Also previously owned a 2.0 giulia and stelvio. Best cars I’ve ever owned! None of them ever gave me any serious issues. All the rumors are exaggerations

Good comments which address correctly issues from the driver's car point of view. This is a true driver's car and a probable future classic, especially when the gadgets on other cars have become old and the less favourable dynamics of these other cars have been exposed.

As a long time Alfa lover (currently have a 156 GTA and Alfetta GTV), I would love a QV, but they retail for over $150k here in Australia... Even the Veloce 2.0Lt starts at $80k, and sadly, usual Alfa depreciation hasn't yet kicked in. And most Australian buyers hang on to them - there are hardly any on the used market at any given time.
Your observation about "owners not the product" rings true - online and social media is full of disgruntled owners of Giulias and Stelvios complaining. However, the absolute majority of those seem to be from the US ... there simply isn't any comparable level of dissatisfaction evident in any other other market.
Which suggests to me US buyers (who seem more interested in the size of cupholders than checking the oil...) and the appalling reputation of a US dealer network staffed by snake-oil salesmen and Jeep mechanics (made worse by Alfa's 30 year absence no doubt) are the common denominator.
It took six months since you started to review cars to appear on my home, but you picked the right one now.

@@jandolinsky2770 it's 100% certain that the last facelift/update of the Giulia Q now has a mechanical differential. The old setup apparently overheated too much. I am still unsure how similar it is to the GTA (in marketing material Alfa says they learned from this model) and about torque vectoring (I assume that's a software function anyway, and all they did is remove the clutches).

In my view the paddle shifters are better than any manual I've driven. A bit like the steering, you need to get used to some aspects of the Guilia but you won't want to go back once you've lived with them a little while. Light, agile, fast, balanced in corners and really beautiful to look at - what more do people want?
I agree with you. Very good video and I appreciate the thought put into it. It really has nothing to do with the car. Never has been the issue. ;) I have owned many Alfa's. I own a Giulia Qv and it has been nothing but reliable and a joy to drive. Best car ever! Most people do not get this brand. It will always be this way and it is why alfa is alfa. Niche market for Niche people or petrol heads.
I know about this car and I want to buy one, right now I can’t afford a new one for 80k but I am considering used for 45k. I just recently test drove the Kia stinger GT2 and the price tag is a over 50k with a V6 twin turbo and 368hp, comparing what you get for the money, the used Giulia QV seems like the obvious choice with 150hp more. The Giulia has shown that it is not enough to produce a brilliant, class-leading product that gets rave reviews everywhere it goes. Alfa haven't produced a really desirable car in decades and it takes a very, very long time to change established habits. Even petrolheads are a conservative bunch and play it safe when it comes to buying their own car as much as they might admire other products, so they stick to the usual German brands rather than going for something a bit more special. It's ironic when BMW themselves stated at release of the latest 3-series that they didn't benchmark the Giulia because it was too good. I have a GQ on order so I have put my money where my mouth is.
What are you getting? The facelift?
@@nessuno5403 This made sound crazy but I don't know! Apart from the Anniversario special edition the MY23 GQ hasn't been announced yet. It depends what Alfa build when the time comes. Most likely a MY22 (pre-facelift). I wanted a MY22 because I love the classy analogue dials even though the matrix headlights would be very nice to have I don't really want another me-too digital dashboard. Ultimately, either way I just want the car to arrive!
@@memo3872 it's not crazy, but normal with Alfa Romeo 😂 Just beware, the MY22 has a steel roof. The facelift can be optioned with the carbon fibre version again... good luck!
I agree with what you said except the part that Alfa doesn't produce a desirable car. They do. The problem is more complicated and it's not one particular issue. I think in most countries where Alfas are sold, it's lack of brand name recognition coupled with sheer dominance of German marks in the high performance sedan market. It's a crowded segment and difficult to compete. Even the Japanese have a hard time competing with the Germans. Around where I live with a more European derived population, Alfa is well known but the problem then becomes the perception of reliability. People are generally highly cautious of Italian brands, unless they're so well off they don't care and can afford Maseratis, Ferraris and Lambos, etc.

I think the problem in the USA is Alfa has not advertised very much compared to the German cars and it’s a shame they definitely should be more popular brand
As someone who previously owned AMGs... here in Australia I get a lot more comments, a lot more people walking up to me asking "What its that, it's gorgeous!"
Which I don't particularly care about, but it is an observation. The Giulia QV is a car that I can't imagine I'll ever get sick of, and the only plan to sell it would be to get another one.
Oh, and it's been completely reliable. Unlike the AMGs.

I think your first guess is correct, most people doesnt care, they’re often even too stupid to pick up on differences between cars.
It’s not selling for a few reasons:
Early models 2016/17 had multiple issues - all corrected with software updates but the damage was done and reinforced outdated opinions amongst know nothing journos that Alfas are unreliable.
The dealer network is dreadful.
Next to zero marketing.
No meaningful updates since launch, in a market where unfortunately a lot of buyers place more importance on the quality of the infotainment, headlights and back up camera than the driving experience.
Still, the best sports sedan by far and I’ll be keeping mine long term.
The car got two bigger updates. Its one thing to say that its missing infotainment tech stuff but the car got enough updates, maybe more than any other car in its segment.
My dream car
The problem of the Giulia is there are a lot of people who won't buy it:
- AMG or BMW-M won't buy it couse it lacks the prestige
- Tesla costumers won't buy it couse it lacks the gimmicks
- People in the market for a drivers car, not a 500hp track tool
- people who dont have 85.000€
4:30 ... this V6 is built from F154 V8 parts so I agree we can say it's a Ferrari (derived) engine, but it's a new design with different bank angle, different turbos (unfortunately these are not twin scroll) and of course completely different engine management. No other F154 engine can switch off one of the cylinders banks as this one does in advanced efficient mode. ...This is what we can learn online from the engine author, the Ferrari, now Alfa Romeo engineer Giuseppe Busso himself.
It's not 'unfortunately' these are not twin scroll. There's an odd number of cylinders (3) attached to each turbo. Single scroll is the most efficient in this case. Twin scroll is for even numbers of cylinders with equal pulses for exhaust scavenging.
Alfa is the inventor and creator of the sports saloon back in 1955 long before BMW! How things have changed! Alfa was king back in the 1950s & 1960s!

I also have a manual one and let me tell you that what I see is that in my country at leas, it is seen as exuberant, an exotic, everyone asks why haven't I bought a Mercedes or a BMW, but they are wrong, all in all the Giulia is the best car in the world still. With the exception of the explanation for the A mode (it's 'advanced efficiency' and not 'all weather'), I totally agree with all your comments. I have a 2017 Giulia Q and really love it. Even where I live (northern part of Italy) a Giulia or Stelvio (even a regular model) remains a rare sight, only adding to the occasion if you have one. Let's not forget that maybe 95% of people don't know about cars and just buy a German car to follow the herd.

Kudos to you! I still find it funny when I see Alfa salespeople that get it wrong (even in Italy). It was clear that was going to be the case when we discussed a change of modes at the start of the project.

Ι know why I didn't buy one: I don't fit (6'5"). Funny enough I fit in my golf, but I could not find a comfortable driving position in a giulia or a giulietta no matter what. And I wanted both.
One of best cars of the modern era
I enjoyed the car for 2 years until the engine blew up at 30k miles. The had to replace the engine which took 45 days and so I got rid of the car afterwards. Prior to that, it was in the shop 10 times for multiple issues. Having said that, it was a magnificent car to drive. Just a piece of s**t to own.

Just got a '23 Giulia Estrema and I am in love with it. Coming from an E91 328xi wagon, so a high bar in terms of handling and steering feel. The Giulia is incredible, I only wish there was a 6 cylinder engine that developed 350-400hp between the base 2.0T and the V6 in the Quad. I need AWD based on where I live so the Quad will never be an option until I can convince my wife we need 3 cars.
Part of an interview of Gianluca Pivetti, Ferrari engineer: A totally new project In this regard, Pivetti would like to point out that this engine is not, as it has sometimes been written, the V8 Ferrari to which two cylinders have been "cut", but that it is a totally new project that has obviously benefited from the experience gained on the engines Ferrari of the F154 series but only to share some peculiarities that we knew would work well: "In reality there are differences, starting with the crankshaft, which has cranks placed at 90 ° on the V8 while here they are at 120 °. So we couldn't just 'cut' a piece ... Clear that has been an active part of the team that designed the V8 Ferrari when I came here I didn't forget all my past! The starting specifications were shared with Ferrari to take advantage of past experiences and shorten development costs and times".
Do you really think Ferrari would allow Alfa to advertise their car as having a Ferrari engine?
I agree with the conclusion: everyone should buy one!
That said, there are some inaccuracies in your review. For starters, it’s named the ‘Giulia Quadrifoglio’ without ‘verde’. So it’s a ‘Giulia Q’ rather than ‘QV’. Then the ‘all terain’ mode you mentioned is in fact ‘advanced efficiency’ - meant to please environmentalists instead of allowing you to off-road your Q. And the title of your video is true when you compare the sales goal of the Giulia vs. the actual sales. However, the Quadrifoglio is an unexpectedly big success. A ‘halo model’ usually accounts for just a few percent of a model’s sales, however, Alfa has at times and in some markets sold more Quadrifoglios than regular Giulias 😮

Haha, the speedo works fine, it's just a small editing trick to avoid fines whilst still letting people know how fast the car is :)
You've reviewed a first generation Giulia. After 2019, they've became significantly better on the interior. Better infotainment (with Apple and Android support), more solid, better isolation from the exterior, etc.

The thing with Alfa Romeo is the same with most Italian brands. General people keeps the same mindset from 40 years ago. German's are best and reliable. Italians are worse and unreliable. ...and neither is true.
I own and drive mostly Italian cars for all my life. I prefer them precisely because the way they feel and drive, so I belong to a small minority that knows they're actually reliable and technology advanced on their mechanic solutions.
Getting a Giulia or a Stelvio, will be one of the last opportunities for ourselves, petrolheads to get a proper balanced and fun to drive car (or SUV). ...from now on, they will go all electric and probably heavier and less nimble.

The actual quality of a car isn't that important, what matters is the perceived quality. The Germans have it, the Italians don't. They only have themselves to blame though.
@@Zero_Ninety Well, the Italian industry, kind of deserved maybe starting in the 70's and through the 80's.
Since them they've kept improving but consumers stuck with the same mindset.
The mindset determines the perceived quality. We go into a German car, look for build quality and find it. We go into an Italian car, look for lower quality details and find them as well. That helps to keep the perceived quality as you say.
However, if we make the simple exercise of reversing the mindset, we also find lower quality materials and poor details in the German cars as well as good quality and fine details in the Italian ones.
This is even an easier exercise in terms of reliability. Many brands share some electronic components from the same suppliers and all suffer similarly from the same electronic problems. As for actual hardcore mechanical reliability and although this changes from model to model, engine to engine, I've been finding Italian cars much better than the German counterparts.
In terms of maintenance and mechanical reliability, the most expensive cars I've ever owned have been Audi and Land Rover.

Well, to be perfectly frank, that warning light on the dash at 6.00 is precicely why I'd never buy an Alfa. Clarkson's comment about "lots of trouble" is quite true and really does tarnish the label for me.
The only light on the dash is the TPMS. As I said in the video, I had just left a Track Day with the car. We let some air out of the tires for extra grip. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing, nice vid, but there are few small discrepancies... A is for Advanced Efficiency, There are 'standard' Giulias w/ added quad tips (and red start buttons), the QV has the fastest times at the Nurburgring for a saloon and never tell an Alfisti to place a BMW badge over the Biscione - the sacrilege !!
I currently purchased a BMW 530e and would have considered an Alfa Romeo but reliability is very important to me. I saw in the video the engine warning light was on and orange. That has happened to me in the past with a couple of cars that needed immediate and costly repairs (i.e. a new turbo in a Mercedes). If Alfa was more reliable I may have considered it.
The TPMS light is on, we lowered the tyre pressure to get it into the track

I love this car… but it is well beyond my means… and I worry about reliability and upkeep costs… and the difficulty of getting it serviced… I have had several Alfas… most mechanics won't touch them round here… currently have one in fact (159)… it is in the shop… for the second time this year… I rarely get to drive it… and it keeps me poor… but it is gorgeous… but that said… parts are not that much more expensive… and I have found a good mechanic… but he is always backed up… so usually have to wait a month for anything to even get looked at… such is life with an Alfa…

Manual gearbox? What are you talking about? Had no idea it existed. What the QV needs is a convertible 2+2. +2 can be tiny, just so I can fit the dog. It needs to fit the golf clubs in a pass-through as well. Fuck i'd buy that.

9:04 would have to disagree! As a Volvo owner, I would say I bought mine because it looks nice and CHEAPER than most European brands - also it’s very reliable. But I would MUCH rather have an Alfa Romeo any day of the week if I could afford it 😂

Although that manual gearbox is also a ZF gearbox, the car is considerably "slower" with it instead of the more common the ZF8HP.

I'm a broke ass dude who wants this car badly. When I get the money, I'll get one. But currently, getting food on the table is a challenge all of its own.
But this is as close as we can get to a no BS car nowadays.
The problem is, all the fans of these cars are young and poor, the people with the money to buy it are probably old... so they prefer a less sporty car
He’s overlooking option 3: Most Petrol-heads are looking for a manual, RWD, practical car THAT THEY CAN AFFORD. These cars have gotten SO expensive that it’s impractical to think they’ll ever sell in great numbers.
Are petrol heads systematically poorer than the people who buy M3s, C63s, etc? Because those cars are selling really well
@@abriatus Most other sport sedans are no longer made in manual, so it’s already not an apples to apples comparison. But even among the M3s and C63s of the world, their number ares still quite small relative to the industry as a whole. Then to add on a the detractor a small player brand (at least by US standards) brings to the table, it’s not entirely surprising they’re not selling nearly as well as MB, BMW, and Audi competitors. People are much more apt to go with a brand they know and trust than try something new. Not to mention the difficulty in many markets of having an Alfa dealer quite a distance away, if at all. Many buyers don’t want the hassle of having to drive an hour (or more) each way every time service or repair is needed. (My parents have a BMW dealer 15 minutes away. Alfa? 90 minutes. Hard pass for many buyers).
And how many Alfa commercials do you see in your area? I can tell you living in South Florida (where there are BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes EVERYWHERE) I have never once seen a commercial for the Guilia. Their marketing budget must be microscopic in comparison to their rivals. Gotta get the word out if you want people to buy.

People don't buy them because they have a reputation for breaking in VERY expensive ways, especially after a few years. They need to get over that reputation first.

You've mentioned lots of good point on why the Giulia doesn't sell, but missed the most important one. Consumers don't buy what they want, their purchase decisions are mostly driven by marketing. Even though Alfa Romeo should be the easiest brand to sell, Italians don't make a good enough job as, mainly, the German brands do. Most of today's people have grown up by hearing claims that VWs are reliable, that Audi's are technically advanced, that BMWs are sporty and that Mercedes is a luxury comfy brand. On the other hand other EU brands have been discredited in every single way with misinformation and fake news spread around. Every time their claims were proven wrong, the Germans have immediately remediated in some way. Brands who've turned to be the most dishonest in the world (read: dieselgate), still have amazing reputation and keep on selling cars, that keep on getting more expensive and breaking down just as much or more than other brands. This is no chance, it's an amazing ability to steer market decisions, not to mention the lobbying power these brands have in EU. Alfa Romeo though doesn't fail to disappoint when they have great opportunities to sell lots of cars. The best example is the Stelvio. It's technically the best SUV on the market, spacious, performant, reliable, comfortable, light, well balanced, best steering, best suspension scheme, well equipped and well designed. Alfa knows people want touch screens, cameras and phone connectivity, has access to the tech from other brands of the group, releases in 2017 a car without android auto, no touch screen and no cameras options other than a crappy rear one. Naive to say the least.
I chose c63s over this car even though the quadrifoglio was noticeably more enjoyable to drive and quite a bit cheaper. The reliability issues just scared me out of owning one since I plan to keep my car for a long time and my car’s handling feel has not been lacking after swapping in coilovers.
If I were leasing and not planning any major modification, I would choose the giualia quadrifoglio over its competitors easily..

Beautiful car, but the reason it doesn't sell as well as it should have is quite simple: reliability (both perceived and real). If only it didn't throw check engine lights for journalists when it was launched or give early adopters issues, it would have been excellent.
Other nit-picks (for me). No coupe version. ZF automatic in the QV?? (wish it were DCT or manual). Lastly, very little visual differentiation from the base Giulia. Sucks to pay almost $100k for the QV and having it look like a $40k Giulia.
I think the most important reason for Alfa Romeo to fail is the dealer and service network. There just aren't enough and they have a poor reputation. For a buyer, that's a key ingredient.
I had forgotten about this car because of nagging worries re the dealership quality and reliability. Maybe it's time to rethink

Unfortunately while it's a good car but you can't help but say Alfa is still a much smaller brand in terms of presence on the roads in many markets and really many people forget to cross shop it and I believe the company is to blame.

Here's the issue that I personally have with Alfa's. You can't expect to use niche marketing/engineering and gain mainstream sales. They don't go together. It's clear the target demographic is car enthusiasts. However, this approach is outdated if you really want to reach mass market. Me personally, I'm a young guy and I love cars, but I've also grown up with technology my whole life. I don't consider myself the average consumer, but I'm definitely not the guy who will buy a 2005 m3 and pimp it out.
I visited an Alfa dealership and the guy on the floor looked like ur classic small irritated italian man. First semi-aggravated question was if I was even actually interested in buying in the first place(Which I was). I've done my research so I started asking him questions about the car, if they plan on improving back-up cameras or adding more cameras, if they plan on adding heads-up displays. He told me that nobody complains ever about the resolution or the quality of the backup camera, the only complaint he gets is that SIZE of the screen. He follows it up by saying that Alfa doesn't do "gimmicks" like a heads-up display. From my perspective, I completely disagree, certain tech features are absolutely not gimmicks. Front parking camera, amazing. 360 parking camera, incredible. Phone app that lets me lock/unlock my car, remote start it to cool it down if it's been sitting in the sun. Wireless apple carplay, amazing. These are all things that together combine to simply make your life easier. As a younger guy that values not only a nice sporty drive but a great overall owning experience, the Germans take the cake. I'm not asking for autonomous driving because I love driving, I just want a better overall experience as a guy who loves driving his car in 2023. If the Alfa had at least HALF of these I would've picked one in a heartbeat, but that sorry excuse of a back-up camera was too much for me. 2022 m340i was my winner in the end.
I think you made a very good point. I also get the feeling that the average driver shares the same concerns. As an Alfa lover, i think Alfa Romeo should address this.
