Every Parrot Owner Should Be Doing This ONE Thing

- If you follow my masterclass and consultation videos, you see us use this technique a lot but for some reason, I'm finding the majority of bird owners do not implement it! So I'm going over it in a different light this time. I hope it convinces you to use this technique with your bird, your friend's bird, the local rescue birds and even your other pets!

The peeps who disliked are upset they can’t target train a bird as easily as you can
Btw- love the vid🥰
Low key true😂 (I didn’t dislike btw)
I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I get a budgie, I love these videos
You are so smart to do that. It makes training so easy.
Lisa Jervis same! I’m getting mine Friday! So excited
Ethan Clark yayyy! Good for you!
@@bunnibloopers8466 I’m sad because I got my bird unexpected, and I didn’t know a thing. But now, I have been watching videos on things to do and not to do, I am learning from my mistakes before I get another bird in the future. 🙂
Me too
It’s 7 am and I need to go to school. I am so tired and didn’t wanna get out of bed. And then I saw that you posted and jumped straight out 😂
Target training has been a life-saver for me. I have a blue-fronted amazon. When she was a baby, I used a little plastic blue bear as a target. She has now graduated to a metal chopstick, and it comes in handy when she's not wanting to step up and I need her to move somewhere.
Some people ignore target training. It is very useful in setting a language with your feathered friend. You would just click and your bird will understand what you desire for him to do. Every bird owner should try it
BTW Jamie you are 🌈 AWSOME 🌈👍🏻👍🏻
My bird heard you click and is looking around like “Treat! Treat! Where is it??” xD
Also I use a chopstick with a dog clicker that I padded with cloth to make it less sharp for my budgie, works pretty good!
My 3 year old adopted conure learned target training literally in minutes. I got him from a family member and they had never even heard of target training. Birds are so smart.
Nobody cares
@@Hybrid_646 then why do you bother reading this?
After watching a target training video on this channel I target trained my fearful dog. She loves training and going through different cues helps her work through her fears. Teaching her to touch her nose to my hand was such a game changer. When she is super heightened emotionally asking for such a simple trick can transition her into a work mindset where I can get other cues from her. We have gotten over bicycles, fireplace noises, bicycles, sooo many noises, certain people, objects flapping in the wind and so many others using the touch cue.
I was reading through all these amazing stories but was not expecting to see dog get trained around all these birds!
Hope you have great day and a happy pet❤
I do this with one of my three budgies, I just have a kind of,,,, kebap stick with a little red bead glued to it. He actually picked it up really fast because he is so food-motivated xD
My mom has lovebirds, and only one (Blue) is able to be food motivated for clicker training. I use millet sticks on him and he responds well. His mate Fruitloops likes millet sticks too, but is not a handfed baby, so she only responds when it outside the cage. I need to get her comfortable with my presence and hands. Their only current chick is Indie, it's sibling died recently and that still really hurts. Indie is terrified of my presence, even more than it's mother. Indie doesn't have a favorite food yet I think or it's too scared to even think of food. It gives a flight response and tries actively running away and freaking out. I wanna change that, but it's kinda tricky without a favorite food.
Some birds may also have an interest in toys or verbal praise or petting as a reward for training, but that's very individual specific!!! Some birds just really really love petting for example as part of their personality, so a little scritch scratch may be great for that bird if you're on good enough terms to work that. But food is definitely the best option if you can. Good luck with your birdies!
I wonder if their diet just doesn't allow a place for a "special reward obtainable only from human interaction"
If your food is seed, try giving pellets as an everyday food. If it’s pellets, try veggies. Then try millet stick or other seed. Also, put a towel over your hand so they don’t know it’s you. Good luck!
I love that you are calm and not in everyone’s faces trying to get attention good job with all that you’ve done with you and everyone’s birds😊
I used a Chopstick for My green cheek.
Same
Yes same here with my green cheek - Whenever I leave it on the table nearby she’ll find it there and she smashes it around and throws it off with a loud ‘eeek’ 😁🦜
I will get my bird in some weeks, and I will target train him!!! I am so excited to get my bird I LOVE BIRDS!!!😁
I have budgies and I found it very difficult to juggle millet, a chop stick, and the clicker so I used a very small wooden spoon. I taped the clicker to the bowl of the spoon and used the end of the handle as the target. Works great! My budgies learned to touch the target after just a couple clicks- even my most nervous bird. They learned so fast it was incredible. It took a couple short training sessions to teach them to do simple tricks like walking through a small hoop, standing on top of the hoop, and turning in place. I am trying to get them to respond to their names, then I'll work on short flights. I have done a combination of target training with the whole flock (a bit chaotic but fun for the birds) and individual training. Thanks for your awesome vids- I couldn't have done it without you!
Blueberry is so cUtE
I have two Budgies that I have target trained. Im an artist so I use a retire plastic paintbrush end.
Amber Gatley same :))
Target training is so fun and useful. Tbh it should have been one of the first things I taught my budgies
I trained my parrotlet on the 2nd day of having her. She wasn’t curious about he my chop stick enough to bite it on her own so I first touched it to her beak as gently as possible, clicked and treated. She then was eating and I did it again I guess she thought I was giving her food bit the stick and revived treats after that she was hooked. I used target training the rest of the week to teach her to spin, fly, step down and up. Target training helps out so much.
I have just gotten a new budgie! She’s great and working on training but every time I play one of your videos she goes nuts! She loves your voice and starts to chatter and sing with in a couple of seconds!
I love touch training. We use a chopstick and a clicker. We have a Ringneck parrot, that at times can be super cheeky. The other day, she decided to explore the inside of my mum’s handbag. When my mum went to get the bird out of her handbag, she went to bite her. I stopped my Mum and said I’ll get her out. And I touched trained her out of the bag and back onto the table. Once she was on the table I pulled the bag gently away. Touch training allows us to communicate on the same page in a positive way. Thank you for all your videos, they are helping!! I did heaps of research before we bought Hallie the ringneck but as amazing as she is, taking proper care of her and dealing with her personality takes a huge commitment. Every time we have friends over and they say they want a bird, we tell them to watch your videos first. Keep up the great work.
Jamie I converted a lot of your stuff into my dogs and it’s works wonders you inspired me to train my dogs a few tricks with capturing ! 🌈💕
We ended up using a metal chop stick with our Eclectus as the wooden one he was nervous of and the nervous behavior turned into agression. But I discovered he likes shiny things when we were putting up our Christmas decorations years ago so we showed him both chop sticks and he was very curious about the metal shiny one. It worked a treat and still 6yrs on we regularly take it out it is very entertaining to him and a great way to introduce different things into his environment.
This is SO COOL!!! I love when you're videos cover material like this!!! I have taken a college level class for this and it's not spoken enough. My mom struggles to understand it when I speak about it
I love how you not only talk about birds but other animals too your training is awesome I love all your birds.🦜
First! 💜 love you so much! Can’t believe I’m actually first/early! Your channel is so helpful! I watch you everyday
Thank you, I am using your touch training advice to work with my 37 year old blue front amazon who just lost her favorite person to college and it is really helping us get reacquainted with less agression from her. I so appreciate your videos.💕
Blueberry is so adorable. My Senegal is afraid of target sticks, I am going to try something else. Thank for the tips 😃
You can try putting something on the end of it like a ball 💜
I have green cheek and i didn't start targeting until a couple months after I got him. He got it straight away with his beak. It was a lot easier than I was expecting.
Hey Jamie..well after your consultation and watching a few videos like this I am happy to say that my Anzu is now target trained, followed all your guidelines, tips and tricks and have had a great result, really pleased..Regards Bill
I have a budgie and her name is Halo. As soon as I found you guys on youtube, I trained targeting. Honestly, it was super easy, but we do have to work on it from time to time, just like any other tricks I've taught her.
Capri is so adorable. You are wonderful in teaching training. Thank you.
I LOVE your videos! We have a budgie and a green cheek conure and thinking about getting a Quaker! Your videos have really helped to really think into a bird before getting one! Thanks so much!
I started with my bird on target training at age 6 and he is doing great! I'm working on their diet and that has been helping so much too!
Jamieee you are so cool and composed, I admire that. I'm taming my new budgie, while taking lessons from you! It's an absolute sheer pleasure. Your approach of not giving up with the bird has inspired me a lot . Thankyou so much and lots of love to blueberry.
I've started target training with a plastic perch and a pen click, but we're purchasing a clicker from you guys (Bordtricks, the 3 set) and using a chopstick to teach instead. I have a Green Cheeked Conure and he's cuddly but he's young so he tends to be bitey (not aggressive, just nibbles). He LOVE targeting so far, but we're putting a pause on it because the clicker will help him understand he needs to touch the target more gently. We will be starting flight training with him (mostly recalls) when he gets his flights back in (they were clipped without permission). We aren't going to fly him outside until we actually get a trainer, but we are going to recall train him and harness train him (separately) in case he does escape, his harness gets loose, or gets cut, or someone tries to steal him, we can recall train him if he gets, say, stuck in a tree. We'll be training him with actual trainers, so hopefully all goes well and he learns to come back via recall. But we're going to be trying a lot of different things to make sure all goes well!
Target trained my pineapple green cheek conure "Chappy" with a chopstick, plastic clicker, and pinenuts/sunflower seeds/safflower seeds. We practice targeting in the cage and outside the cage. Our goal is to use it to train stationing. We loooove watching and learning from your videos!
This was helpful, thanks so much!
What a wonderful technique! Thank you! I am going to try it
Your videos is so fulfilled with wisdom and full of knowledge.
I have a lovebird and budgie and target training literally changed my whole relationship with my birds as it was a way for them to spend time with me without having to use my hands to get them to go somewhere (and eventually I could use my hands)! It took a while with my lovebird as she was very skittch but with patience its worth it. Love ur channel!❤️
Thanks for the video! You guys are so helpful!!
Don’t have a bird. Will likely never get a bird. I know my limitations and noise is a big no for me, but I watch your videos ALL the time! Such good info and entertaining to boot!
I have a cockatiel and we already tried target training!! He is pretty young(7 months old) and he did amazing!!
He wasn't treated very well by the breader and so he NEVER allows anyone to touch him. He will get close to your hands only if you have seeds in it.
And I was very surprised than he enjoyed target training!!🎉
We took a little break and now will start the training again!!
Thank you very much for your work!
Also if anyone will have tips on taming my little boy I would love to hear them😊
Hope you have a great day!!!❤❤❤
Both of my tiels picked up target training so quickly after at first not understanding what the heck was going on! A definite must!! ❤️
I have two lovebirds and i started with targeting my finger, until my female got a bit to enthusiastic so i started targeting with a stick❤ love your videos they help me so much
Love your videos❤
I have a 19 year old rescued scarlet macaw who was abused, has had a broken wing and was locked in a cage for the last 10 years! He surprisingly bonded with my 14 and 15 year old sons but is so scared of any adult. After getting bit a few times(once that probably required stitches) I tried targeting and it worked! It has become the only way that we can interact. He has learned to "spin" "wave" open his "wings" (the once broken one only half way) "dance" and say a few words on que from just learning one thing, TARGET TRAINING! I can pet him now too using a petting que but we haven't gotten to the point where either of us is comfortable with stepping up yet. He's totally different with my kids. They can hold him upside down like a baby and has never bitten them but he still doesn't trust adults yet because of the years of abuse he suffered. He will target and train with anyone but he prefers to only train with me for some reason, and I'm alright with that! I'll take whatever I can get. He's a work in progress but has come a long way thanks to targeting and all of your videos. They've helped me so much!
Your videos are tbh the best. I literally learn so much from them. I have a green winged Macaw (It will be a week that I got him tomorrow) He is great, and is progressing, but I do want to learn as much as possible.
I have 2 greys and a Yellow Nape Amazon. All three of them target just as you showed it. They are all older now, but I do use it now and again. I'm always glad to have it as a training tool! And I agree, it is a foundation for training tool!
So far Jacob the GCC has learned to touch the stick, step up on a branch & turn around. He loves his tiny tabletop perch I keep on the kitchen counter. So funny yesterday he was on it and turned around before I asked him but he didn’t get a treat until he turned when I asked him. I love that perch because he can’t bite me when giving him a treat without falling off. Otherwise he’ll bypass the treat and go for the finger. I wish I would have known about capture training before. I learned from your video. When I first went to target train my GCC with the stick he’d reach out and grab it and hold it with his foot. Missed that! Now I can’t get him to do it. It was so cute. Since I cannot touch my Conure I’m so glad he’s trained to go into his cage when I ask him. He’ll do anything I ask him to avoid a towel. LOL He was a rehome. A woman sold him to the pet shop. Didn’t want him. Said he was mean. He came in a small cage with a very large hard leather chew toy for BIG birds which he slept in the top curled piece of leather and no other toys. I’ve had him since March of 2016 and just this past year he’s starting to play with toys a little. He’s very verbal and communicates a lot at night when he wants something.
Thank you for sharing
I am training my two year old linnie, Bebe with this technique. Using a wooden stick, the kind you use for supporting flowers. I have glued a little wooden bead to it.
I think I will have to come up with new ideas often, since he is a really smart little fella. So keep posting good tricks for small parakeets! Love it!
Im getting 2 cockatiels on the 15th of august I have a double flight cage on the way and have done 2 years plus worth of research,h and have finally decided I’m ready for a bird
Blueberry is so awesome !!! He is a great addition to your family ❤️ !!!
thank you so much!!! I have taught my bird targeting nearly a month ago once I learnt watching your masterclass... i am able to get my bird walk around to target but only in his training stand and he is not willing to target the stick in and out of the cage or rather he is on his own terms...he is handicapped(he lost one of his legs in an eagle attack) but he learnt to manage very well. he is just introduced to foraging(about which I learnt from your video- thanks for that) and I am trying hard to teach him flight. pls share a video on teaching a bird to fly who has his wings clipped.
love you channel, it has been of great help
Wow I should try this to my baby 🐦 thanks for the information. I just subscribed ur channel!
This is the first thing I taught my Hagi (Turquoise green cheek conure) didn't have a wooden chop stick handy so used a small dowel and sharpened both sides, this helps when its time to go to sleep and he doesn't want to go into his cage just target him into his cage with a nice treat for a good job done 😊
Thanks for this video. Ohh the tricks that I have to do to get my budgie back in the cage! I'm going to try this today!
That high pitch wing flapping brings back some memories, blueberry could almost be mistaken as a twin of my first parakeet, I wish this channel was available back when i was around 10 (granted it was still a few years away from even non networked computers being common in the average household)
Oh wow! You've got that round cage that I'm seeing all over Facebook!
This is so cool and amazing
I have already started target training my 8 month old eclectus and it was very easy to teach her to target because she is always curious when everytime i put a object near her
I trained my lizard to target train.
I also taught my galah the moment I brought him home, it was the most useful thing I could have trained and helped me immediately.
I touched trained my mum's rainbow lorikeet, with a shorted garden bamboo stake, (about the size of a chopstick) and we started with potatoe chips dipped in his wet food as a treat. but of late have progressed to honey mixed with a little water on a teaspoon. and no clicker (he is a quite noise sensitive) but i do say good book once he has touched the stick and yes every time.
the hardest bit was finding the right reward. he got bored with potatoe chips, really fast.. but honey currently is working wonderfully.
mums bird is around 15/16 years old, and has never had his wings clipped so flys pretty well. Mum can no longer take care of him due to illness, so this channel has been super helpful. touch training was awsome. :D
I really got a good laugh at that cute picture of Capri kissing the 🐦. Looks like she is going to bite its head off.what a smart adorable little girl you could mail her to me. I'd really spoil her for you. Keep up your good work teaching and training.
My birb is learning to target train and its really useful in directing him too.
I have 2 ringnecks and a peach fronted conure all three of them love to target, I also used the target to teach them do the spin and step-up
I *did* target train my quaker when I first got her but honestly she just kind of *knows* where I want her to go and when and I love her for it😂
I have an Indian Ringneck male, 10 months old. He was so easy to target train. I used a chop stick, clicker, and apple slice. It’s the only success we’ve had since I got him 2 months ago.
I'm late but I'm here😍🐦
Helpful video for me. Thanks
Great vid....🥰
I recently adopted a demon child, aka a SEVERE MACAW,
I’m telling target training has helped so much. He’s beginning to trust me a whole lot more.
I’m patient and taking everything slow, but it’s amazing to see his improvement.
Thank you so much for making these videos, they are so helpful! I tried touch training with my budgie and he decided to do something of his own! I tap the stick and bring it up high and he would jump up to it to get a treat! Please let me know if this can still help! The video helped a lot! 🥰
Especially like the socialization tips
Im so so glad to have stumbled across your videos i have a young cockatiel who wouldnt even take treats from me and i worked through that as she seemed to be interested in target training but i couldnt get her to take a treat even from a bowl, now i have her taking treats targeting and weve started a concept of turning, shes got a keen desire to fly so im hoping to work her up to some free flight she still has a clipped wing but its growing out. I have a conure who loves our training session hes so enthusiastic he has got spins down pat and if i take too long to get treats ready hes spinning uncued its so awesome
I have a budgie and a cockatiel and thanks to you guys they both target with a stick, a clicker and beaks.. they love training so much.. when I'm training my tiel.. my budgie comes over and tries to push the tiel out of the way and touch the target.. so i have to do each bird in a different room alone so that they don't get distracted..i need to buy your budgie course and some other of your courses so i can do some more advanced training
Hi guys
Okay, So somebody at home asked me to ask you a question and I was like- “This person has at least 300 comments or more every video she has, What is going to make you think she will respond to us specifically”.
But I do want to ask because I’m defiantly not good with working with smaller birds, I would be better off with a macaw then the type of bird we have.
My dad got impatient and impulsively got a bird and left it with us.
No preparation, no flight cage, the cockatiel came in a extremely small cage and we had to get it a flight cage. It got worse when my dad got another one. They wanted to kill each other by picking at the back of each others head aggressively.
Along with this we have two dogs and one of them is actually more scared then aggressive with birds while the other one will literally go insane if they even see one.
So we got the birds a flight cage and my mom wanted to help me train them to be “tame” because she saw me suffering.
But these birds (no matter what technique we have tried for 3 months) do not want to work with us when we used food as a bribery. They want to be aggressive. I would be patient because I didn’t want the bird to think “If I act aggressive they will leave me alone”. I don’t know what I’m doing and my relationship with my father is going down because of his ignorance of getting a bird I don’t know anything about.
I would definitely try to re-home them if you think they would be better off with someone else. If you still want to try taming them I would keep doing what you are doing and maybe several times a day. It took my 6 months to tame my lovebird and he was the same.
Also definitely try to separate them if you want to move forward with them because if they have the option to bond with each other or you they will definitely want to chose another bird
Shinee's back Agree. My conure only became amenable to training when I separated him from my parakeets. Around them he was defensive of them and aggressive towards me.
Thanks for the great idea to train my fearful bird
I’m going to try this yesterday. I got a Derbyan parakeet a couple of days ago after losing my previous bird and this is the biggest bird I’ve ever heard. He’s still a lit nervous so hopefully this will help him getting more comfortable around everyone 🤞🏻
I just ordered some new clickers from you to keep around for capturing! don't know how anyone with a bird gets by without using targeting!!💜💜💜
Also love you Channel 🥺💚
I absolutely love your outfit today you look extremely adorable. 🧡🥳 My sun conure and dusky conure come home soon! the family I am getting them from and I have been working on flight recall and it's going so well!
Blue is so brave. My budgies are afraid of everything. But i think target training could be a good thing to get them where i want them
I have a green cheek conure and i use wooden chopstick like yours at the beginning. I don’t have a clicker but I’m planing on buying it. Love your vids!🥰
Hey u can use ball point pens top as a clicker temporarily till u buy a proper one
Thanks!!!☺️
I have a blue-headed pionus and I've used a device with a target stick and clicker in one. The stick is «expandable» so you can adjust it to desired length, and it has a small blue marker ball at the tip. Recently I've bought a separate clicker for use in non-target related training - since they're combined in the same device, my parrot would get distracted by seeing the target marker and try to reach it, understandably enough.
you are the best RUclipsr
I have a green cheek conure and I use the dowel perch that came with my emergency/vet travel cage! :)
ahh early!! love ur family!!
Targettraining is great, 3 weeks ago i adopted an blue fronted amazon, from around 3 years old. I dont know why but he dont like stepping up hands. So i started from day 2 with targettraining , He loves to do it! Now 3 weeks later i can get him in or out the cage, we do some flight training inside ofcourse! and since yesterday he flies and landed on my hand multiple times. So yeah i love targettraining , it gave me a way to build his trust.
I love blueberry’s cage 😊 where can I get a cage like that ? Also love watching and learning different target training techniques you do with all different birds. Thank you for teaching all of us ❤😊
“Target stick” me being asian: CHOPSTICK TIME
I target trained my budgie as a way to tame him (bought from a pet store). I used a rock candy stick and a pen as the clicker. I trained him inside the cage to target before step-up training. It was especially helpful to target my budgie back in his cage. I am now teaching my tiel (15 weeks old) to target and he caught on very fast.
Love the idea of using a pen as a clicker.
Off topic but you are so beautitul along with ur daughter and ur whole family/flock ❤ love the vids it helped me learn im not ready for a parrot aha
😍blueberry is so cute
I have a CAG and use a chopstick (Asian so that’s easy to get). No clicker unfortunately, but we manage pretty okay w/out. Quite phobic at first but i realized it wasn’t exactly the stick she was scared of, it was ME with the stick. Tried again in a couple weeks after we bonded, and now she she targets great (except she wont go far unless it’s a great treat like a nutriberry. She understands perfectly fine but she’s stubborn haha).
Hey I have one cockatiel and a budgie both of them are tamed
And I reached my cockatiel to fly to me by using target training a month ago 💕 your videos and yeah your birds and you are so cool 😎 and awesome 👏
Love your birds
And did you make video on bird molting wasn’t able to find it because I subscribed recently so if you did not make one please make one ☝️
I have two green cheeks and I've been using your target and clickers. They are doing really well with it and I love it because Green cheeks can be nippy. I rather they nip the end of the stick than my finger when they are in that nippy mood lol
Hi, I have an alexandrine parrot, and I use a budgies perch, since it is small and he really likes it
I lucked out with an AMAZING budgie boy from PetSmart of all places -- he has a natural curiosity about the chopstick and at first was more interested in the stick than the treat! He's starting to understand the click now though...the little lightbulb in his head is starting to flicker on when he hears it, so good progress heheh.
I have an African Grey and I use a flagpole with a clicker
