  • Thanks to such a great response on my community page post, with ideas, positive feedback and generally all round loveliness, I thought I would show you how I budget for my weekly shop. I've been doing this for years and found it quite effective in stopping impromptu purchases, and especially useful going around using my mobile calculator while shopping.
I generally have a week 1 and week 2 food/dinner plan, so we avoid eating the same thing each week.
Let me know how you budget for your food shopping....
Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching....

Hi, Thanks for another informative video. When I was at school they used to have cooking lessons, sewing lessons and housekeeping lessons for the girls
which included Budgeting for meals and shopping Etc. Don't think that they do any of this now, but like you say they should put it back onto the school
corriculum. Boys were not allowed to do cooking lessons, which given the number of male chefs which appear on TV is amazing really.

I went to all girls school in Seventies in Essex. We were taught cooking, and budgeting.
We had actual rooms set up like rooms in a house, and were taught how to make beds, wash, and iron clothes, hoovering and dusting.
Didn’t appreciate it at the time, but would be a good idea now, for boys and girls!

Buying reduced items and freezing them is so handy you can buy something that you wouldn't usually buy as out of your price range. Look forward to the shopping trip.

Soup with all the slightly soft veg and bits. Keep a ziplock bag in the freezer for your carrot tops, soft celery, floppy parley, broccoli stalks, etc. Then make soup when you have a bag full, with some extra frozen veg and a tin of tomatoes, a stock cube, and whatever seasoning you like (garlic, ginger, etc.)

Very good idea Kerry, planning ahead, it's a good thing to do. I've started doing my shopping online, i shop at Tesco, i tried Asda but i didn't like some of these stuff. When you go on the app all your favourites come up so you can see if you want to reorder the same items, then you just search for whatever else you might need also you can keep an eye on your basket so you know how much you are spending, i always get it delivered at 8 at night as it is cheaper, it costs 3 pounds, also you are saving your petrol, time and i'm not carrying heavy bags from the car, also your tempted to buy more stuff as you're going round the store

Wow! I have to Tetris the contents of my freezer, it's so rammed - and there's only me! Trouble is, I go shopping, specifically at Morrisons for bargains, and there are so many reduced items. This evening, for example: Sausage and mash ready meals, 88p down from £2.20 (got two), 240 gram blocks of mild coloured cheddar, 78p down from £2.60 (got three), broccoli and cauliflower florets 42p down from £1.39, a posh Jacksons bloomer loaf, 59p down from £1.95. I just can't resist, although my supermarket of choice is Aldi, which I visited before.

Wow great bargains. I used to buy bargains like that all the time, had food go off as I has excess to my needs. Worked out I was throwing money away. I now see bargains and say, can I use that, do I have some at home? As hard As it is to not buy a bargain I let it go with the frame of mind that if it goes off, I'm throwing that money in the bin. Also someone else gets the opportunity to buy it and they may need it for than I do. 🙂

I do exactly the same, I plan the meals and only shop what I need, another money saving thing I do is put any cash I have in the bank then shop using my card, so any money left over automatically gets saved, sometimes you don’t fancy what you’ve planned for an evening so just swop meals, I freeze leftovers, it’s makes a big difference, and you know what they say, if you look after the pennies, the pounds will look after themselves. Your doing great 💕

She used crumpets, cut them in half and thickly spread them with garlic butter putting them in an ovenproof dish as she went along. I double batch spaghetti Bol as well. 500gms mince, tsp Italian herbs, 2 tins toms, some frozen garlic (not the cheapest but never any waste or soft cloves. So for me works out cheaper) and here’s the best bit, 1/2 bag of sainsburys mixed veg which is onions carrots and celery chopped up small, which again I get no waste, 3 stock cubes, and a rounded tsp of sugar. Sauté mince in Cosori pressure cooker, dump everything else in and stir round, lid on and pressure cook for 30 mins, then I let the pressure go naturally while on the keep warm function. Drop of cream or milk in before serving. Pot then goes in the fridge for lasagne or freeze in bag for next week. Defrost and pop in pressure cooker for 10 mins. It’s very cheap to do and no processed jars which I find too sweet. Give it a go. X

I always write a list of items that are running out and plan my meals, not necessarily for that week, but I batch cook and like to freeze portions for some other time when I don't have time to cook. At the moment I have 2 portions of chicken & veg soup, 2 portions of Lancashire hotpot and 3 lots of homemade pastry left. Tomorrow I'll be making turkey meatballs and ragu for stuffed cannelloni to cook up at some stage.

I do pretty much the same but head to reduced chilled section and see if they have anything I can tweak my menus with usually get 1 to 3 things.
I have 3 freezers so have a list on each one what is in it and mark off when used or add in if I have bulk cooked to save waste...
Taken a loooog time to train my husband who loves shopping and sucked into supermarket marketing and then tries to hide stuff in freezer 🤦‍♀️ so every 6 months a, weekend given up to empty and re sort freezers urgh my least favourite job.
Chicken Roast we get Sunday lunch, cold chicken for sandwiches or salad/stir fry, bones made into stock for soup with wonky veg box.. Veg roasted with chicken to add to flavour of soup... and enough chicken filling for jacket potato a really cost effective buy.

I think about meals for at least 3 days, making sure I keep a supply of things like pizzas for days when I just cannot be bothered to cook or if my daughter makes last minute plans with her friends. Thanks so much Mel, love your method of food planning, I think you n Suz are amazing💕 I did film in lidl on tuesday but the audio was awful, will try again on my next shop using my proper mic. At least I broke a mental barrier going 'out' into the real world - as opposed to a kitchen and allotment/shed 😄👍💕💕

Hi Janet👋😃sorry this is late, I got it from aliexpress, significantly cheaper than Amazon inc cheap postage, just have to wait 3/4 weeks for delivery. Fast becoming my most used Airfryer accessory

They also sell the bowl clip and anti heat glove thing, they're rubbish don't buy them👍

I just find veg a total waste onto my compost heap mostly! Hey ho ..
I eat a lot of basmati rice so I buy a huge sack of it tilda the biggest u can buy 10kg sack it lasts forever so i just top up my canister I rarely have to worry about it.. cost saving too on tiny bags of it is not cost effective...it's all a logistical nitemare for one it's worse and no matter how hard I try a lot goes to waste on the veg front...have u heard of the green bags ? Lakeland sell them many others too but lakeland's are best I put veg in those in fridge sometimes carrots and snips can keep two weeks longer !

You are so organised Kerry, good on you,we never plan ahead as I'm usually in or passing the store every day so we usually just decide the night before what I'm making for the dinner the next day and if we have something in the freezer I put it out at night for the next day and if we don't have anything I just go to the store in the morning and get something for the next couple of day, sometimes I use Alexa if I need to remember a shopping item and she puts it on my list so I check my phone to see what I've added to the shopping list, another good video flower Xx
