Did you catch a small cameo in this one? Do you think we will see Treebeard in the new Amazon series? What do you think happened to the entwives?
I never knew Groot was an Ent! Could we one day see a Marvel-LOTR crossover?
@@petrov3721 Thanks for asking! I do have a discord server. It's an exclusive for Patreon and RUclips supporters. I have it set as a perk for the lowest $ amount I could set - $1/mo. If you're interested, you can check out patreon.com/NerdoftheRings and see all the tiers and perks. Thanks again!
Entwives if i remember correctly migrated over the anduin from the Old Forest to the Brown lands where they grew apples and such and teached their agriculture skills to the men living there. I guess they lived there for a long time and after Sauron burned the Brownlands at 2nd age to stop/halt advance of Last Alliance. I think that Entwives either stayed with their gardens till the end defending them and perishing, or some took for agricultural work by sauron
They embraced feminism and are all set 10 cats to a tree.
My theory on the entwives is that they fled north, into mirkwood where they were probably killed or corrupted.
You know Treebeard is old when he says "Young Master Gandalf."
I’m pretty sure Olórin is older, but as Gandalf yes he’s spent much less time on middle earth than Treebeard.
@@JesusFriedChrist yes, Gandalf/Olorin is a Maiar, he preexsited the creation of Arda.
I believe he actually referred to nature as daughter.
@@RayW.... daughter? Treebeard is old but not THAT old. And he didn't create Arda, the Valars did.
@@efaristi9737 he was probably there when the music was being sung early in creation. Kind of like Tom bombadil and othgoliant
There is something about Ents calling for loved ones "by their beautiful name" and "by their long names" that is a bit of a tear jerker.
My mother read these books to my twin brother and i .I like this
One interesting point. Sam Gamgee recalls the story of a man seeing a tree man that is an elm. Interestingly, in Norse mythology, the first two humans Ask (man) and Embla (woman) when translated are ash and elm. This could be a hint made by Tolkien that the tree man seen was actually an ent wife.
whew thats crazy, i love that theory!
Didn’t Tolkien also study old Norse? If so, that adds a little more weight to the theory IMO.
@@PoppyJr11 He definitely did. The poetic edda and interpretations were a large part of his linguistic knowledge. I'ts linguistic roots being Germanic and Germanic being one his degrees.
This is the quality of comment I expect on this channel!
@@PoppyJr11 he did not only study it, when you read the names of the dwarves in the Edda, you’d be pretty surprised my friend..
Also there is this guy, which’s name roughly translates to gray Wanderer in the Edda, too.
I don't know why Tolkien lore is getting so much love in these past few months across various YT channels, but I can't complain.
There are certainly a lot of good Tolkien channels! I can confirm that I am not affiliated with Amazon or their marketing department though. Lol.
Lots of people actually made a living out of Game of Thrones lore videos, as the Amazon series comes near its natural that content creators are going to try to stabilish themselves. Same as Starwars with the mandalorian sucess
Yeah, not a bad thing.
My dnd world has heavy tolkien inspiration. That guy just got it, ya know
The new series. When you spend a Billion $.
I strongly remember the line "But you're part of this world!"
I was a real introvert as a teen and this really made me realize I can't pretend I'm not part of things.
Also later when Mery tries to convince Pippin to just leave it he reminds him that even the Shire is part of the world and sooner or later the shire will burn if Sauron wins. You can't just retreat and shut off the world.
Unlike you, this line went over my head years before as a child, I thought that moving to a warmer part of the U.S.A. and choosing to live on a mountain with family, away from the rest of the annoyance and drama would give me peace.
Well it did, but it didn't last very long.
I realize now what I am missing out on as a young man, but I don't know how to get out and see the rest of the world without the proper experience of driving.
And now what? You are more of an extrovert than Bruce Vallanch?
Amen.
Tolkien went out of his way to say that the Entwives were "lost." He never says "dead." And when Merry and Pippin describe The Shire, Fangorn is intrigued to say the least. Tolkien never says anything but he hints very subtly that, of all places, the Entwives just might be living in the area around The Shire.
I believe in one of his letters he mentions he “thinks” they “may have” perished. It’s kind of cool that Tolkien leaves things as a mystery even to himself, though.
@@NerdoftheRings I would like to think that he wanted to continue the story. He did a lot of work outside of the hobbit and the lord of the rings, which obviously you are aware of.
Sadly I think they perished. Tolkien's lore almost always ends in sadness.
@@ZiddersRooFurry I don't think so. At least, Treebeard speaks of an old foretelling; that the Ents will one time finally meet with the Entwifes again, but only after the Ents too have lost everything that they possessed.
@@NerdoftheRings Yes, that is really cool. I think he once said that while writing his stories, it felt like he didn't invent something new but just wrote something down which was already there.
I truly believe Tolkien was trying to tell us to plant trees
Yea I think so too
Something we can all get behind. The least controversial way we can help the environment.
Definitely he was talking about The industrial revolution (Isengard) and its environmental implications (destruction of the forests)
I think you are thinking of John Denver
Ents are guardians of nature, along with Tom Bombadil. Tolkien is also saying we should take care of all things natural. Trees, flowers, bushes, and animals.
Ive always loved the story of the Ents. I hope they found their Wives. Also Baby Groot as an Enting was a nice touch.
Every time I think I have Tolkien's works well versed in my mind, there's always more. No one laid out a fantasy with such depth, richness, glory and sadness like Tolkien did with his beloved world.
touch grass
The Ents are victorious, but seem to have one of the saddest endings as the 4th age begins.
This makes sense, and it lines up a great deal with how Tolkien lamented the state of the world when he was writing and even till today. His thoughts on the environment are important. In the Old Forest and in Fangorn Forest, they are painted as if holdouts of a world untouched and somewhat how they're meant to be.
The quality of this channel is off the charts. No wonder the number of subs has exploded over the last few weeks. Well done!!
Fists of faith, another of my favorites, loved the Blood guard!
Thank you so much! It has been a very rewarding past few weeks to see so many people subscribing to the channel.
Tolkien's novels are sad and beautiful all at the same time, you don't get writers like him anymore. You can tell he put his heart and soul into his works, he made something that'll last forever. Great video btw Nerd, your videos bring Tolkien's lore to life in ways that few can manage. I'm not one to get emotional when it comes to fantasy but you've almost gotten me to shed a few tears with how much passion you put into your videos about Tolkien's world and it shows.
The treebeard chapter is one of my favorites in the book. Just 2 hobbits and an ent trying to understand each other in a sweet comforting way, treebeard telling the hobbits stories about his tree friends of the past, and singing them a sweet song that he used to sing to baby ents.
I've always had a special kind of love for the Ents. The story of losing the Entwives has made me tear up more than once.
I discovered your channel two days ago. I’ve nearly watched everything. Thanks for the great contENT :)
I see what you did there. haha. Glad you are loving the channel!
Cool stuff. That bit about a squirrel being able to travel so far by treetops is a reference to the American Colonies. It was said a squirrel could travel from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico without ever touching the ground.
They probably still can, at least probably from New Mexico to Alaska.
I love the scene in the two towers when the ents attack Isengard! So epic! We will unleash strong river! And washes away the orcs!
The battle cry of treabeard is so epic!
Its truly epic, and the song playing is so great!
He says "break the damn, release the river"
In the book it was the Ents how built the damn to redirect the Isen river to inundate Isengard. They arrive at night and stealthily they start the attack. Really epic. The ents are one of my favorite parts of the legendarium, and I too get sad when I notice that the cities and population are growing and consuming the remnants of the ancient native flora like it was nothing.
"The Ents are going to war."
As a little girl I loved the Ents. It always brings a tear to my eye to think of the lost Entwives and the Ents searching for them. There was always a small hope they were out there somewhere…
I love the Ents! Their conquest of Isengard was one of the most satisfying moments of the LotR for me. Such righteous and terrifying vengeance - the Orks and Saruman stood no chance.
I like Tolkein's hint that the Entwives are in the Shire.
Or near the Shire, which makes sense with Tom Bombadil being there.
Specifically, there’s hints that they’re supposed to live in the Old Forest, making sure the huorns refrain from massacring intruding Brandybucks
Not necessarily that they _are_ in the Shire, but that they _were_ in the Shire.
Maybe one of them helped the Hobbits discover pipe-weed? That sounds like something they would do, but then also tell them not to tell anyone about them. Of course there was a bad, long winter when Gandalf saw the Hobbits in extremis. If there were Ent-Wives hiding near the Shire, it might have been beyond them to help the Hobbits much or Gandalf would have seen them.
Thanks for this; to me, the Ents are one of the most intriguing aspects to LOTR. (Treebeard pulling down part of a wall after the siege of Isengard simply to amuse himself is still a favorite moment)
My only regret about the movie depiction was how they acted more dumb than slow to react. Plus the Hobbits description of truly angry Ents being terrifying, was something I’d hoped to see. Ah well, that’s why there’s always the books. 🌳
Years ago one Saturday afternoon in Port-of-Spain a marine tornado swept into the valley where I lived. In minutes this dark column ripped off roofs, palm tree leaves, satellite dishes and spiralled them up while the air shook and howled. A white cat flew by my deck, and I could see our gardener clinging to a poui tree but wit his body perpendicular to the ground. I remember in that moment thinking, 'the fury of the Ents'.
I feel that it's very hard to convey unhurried intelligence as opposed to mere stupidity, especially when "quick" is one of our synonyms for "intelligent". To capture it, I think that you'd have to show the ents somehow coming to thorough, exhaustive conclusions through contemplation, and frankly, Tolkien never gave them such opportunity: Saruman's mischief was too obvious to be revealed through some kind of mental adroitness (and that kind of cleverness is anti-thematic to Tolkien's aesthetic anyways).
@@Duiker36 'Quick' is not a synonym for 'intelligence', Michael. 'Quick witted' yes, or 'quick on the uptake' but not in and of itself. 'Quick' is a synonym for 'fast' - and in the older English sense of the word, also a synonym for 'alive' as in 'the quick and the dead'. But otherwise, you make a great point!
@@Duiker36 I agree it would have been difficult to convey the full depth and breadth of Treebeard's knowledge and intelligence, however I truly didn't appreciate that the Entmoot in the film ended with, "Welp, we gonna do nothing" only to reverse that after Treebeard is duped (and quite easily, I might add) into taking Pippen and Merry to Isengard and seeing the devastation of Saruman firsthand. Yes it gives the Hobbits agency and makes them the heroes of the scene, but their coming to Fangorn was to be a small pebble that began a landslide (or words to that effect), versus slow-witted tree-people gawk and hoot for whatever interminable length of the movie Entmoot (yes I'm ranting a little).
Storytelling for film and for books differ because of the time constraint film makers have to deliver to the audiences. It is easier to be happy if you enjoy both for its own purposes (:
I always thought the surviving Entwives fled to the Old Forest. Treebeard says he thinks they would have liked the Hobbit's country. Maybe what happened was so disturbing to them that they just fled till they had mountains between them and it. I'm not sure of the time line but if Arnor had already fallen they could have moved in quietly and no one would have known. It's always bugged me a little that Merry or Pippin never mention the Old Forest to Treebeard so I don't think he ever thinks to go look there.
They mention it in the books, Treebeard even wonders if that’s where the wives may be.
You do a great job of bringing a topics together. Your use of maps helps immensely.
Glad you are enjoying the channel! I love knowing where characters are in the world when things are happening. Thanks for watching!
Good job Nerd of the Rings! It's interesting that Peter Jackson gave Treebeards words to Galadriel(Cate Blanchett) at the start of The Fellowship of the Rings.
I love these great series about the travels of our beloved characters. Once again, you did an amazing job !
Thank you my friend!
Treebeard said that he would have liked to have seen Fimbrethil one last time this was Treeebeards thought upon facing his own assumed doom facing issenguard
He definitely had a woody for her.
The Ent attack on Isengard in the movie of The Two Towers is still one the greatest action sequences of all time!!!!!
Once again I'm left emotional after hearing about the blight of the trees from the first age to the 4th. Great summary bois.
Ohhhh, so that's where the opening for Fellowship of The Rings came from. I love learning new things about Middle Earth.
In my opinion, the ents story and lore is the most poetic, tragic, and beautiful out of all the middle earth beings lore.
Beautifull story, maybe also the saddest one of whole Tolkien's universe. What a pain the Ents did encounter in their long, long lives!
This was so beautiful! As a lover of nature myself, so much more than a video, but one of the most impactful and personal stories you have ever done!🌲
None other had a voice like Treebeard, truly the Elvis of Middle Earth
I have had my LOTR hardcover for over 30 years. I always pick it up, and put it back down again after one or two pages..and staring at the maps for at least an hour, of course.
I appreciate what you’ve done here.
Did anyone else hear February 30th and went like "that does not sound right"
I was going to ask if there is a video about Tolkien's different calendar - which months besides February have a different number of days?
I went to a talk about the history of a building once and the speaker mentioned something that happened one year on September 31st and I had to ask afterwards if he meant September 21st or 30th or October 31st. Something wasn't right!
That was the most awsome clip I've always loved the Ents and the way you put this together made me appreciate them even more.once again great work keep it up.
Two Towers will always be my favourite LotR movie/book. And the ents fighting back against the industrialization of Saruman is a very big part of that.
I love the the rousing of the Ents story line but I do still wish that Radagast had something to do with it. It would’ve been fitting from what Tolkien told us about him.
The video was immensely ENTertaining...
Haha. Nice. 😄
Nice.thats funny
Next video: Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?
Just south of Rohan near river Anduin😉
History of the ages have already done it lmfao
I got such a chill when I realized that Galadriel's quote in the Fellowship of the Ring was actually a quote from Treebeard, one of my favorite characters. Just WOW
Treebeard has always been my favorite Tolkien character. Thanks for the refresher.
almost without words bro, really nice tale with huge lore that no channel says!
amazing, congratz u deserve all the best, amazing channel!
waiting for the next one for sure. Treebeard made Helms Deep victory certain!
Thanks so much!
There is a really serious and deep Tolkien Podcast: „the prancing Pony Podcast“. I can highly recommend this to everyone who wants to get deep into Tolkiens science.
Great, amazing video. However I am sad that you didn't read the Bregalad's Song as Quickbeam mourned over his dead rowan tree-friends:
"O Orofarnë, Lassemista, Carnimírië!
O rowan fair, upon your hair how white the blossom lay!
O rowan mine, I saw you shine upon a summer's day,
Your rind so bright, your leaves so light, your voice so cool and soft:
Upon your head how golden-red the crown you bore aloft!
O rowan dead, upon your head your hair is dry and grey;
Your crown is spilled, your voice is stilled for ever and a day.
O Orofarnë, Lassemista, Carnimírië!" (J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Two Towers").
I remember reading it for the first time in English (original), I remember my tears as I imagined a young Ent mourning over his dead friends... No translation, however brilliant it is, can convey the feelings depicted here....
Treebeard one of my fav characters. Beautiful video. We know it takes a lot of time and hard work to make these videos. So we always appreciate your hard work and time to make these videos.
Man, I just found your channel and I love this type of stuff! I just finished up all three audiobooks and this is itching that scratch for more content. Seriously enjoy your channel and I'll life every video I watch! Great job!
Really wish Tolkien went more into the EntWives though, been a real question on my mind when I listened to the audiobooks. Excellent explanations and really great visuals. Will definitely recommend your channel to any LotR fan.
Thanks so much! Glad you found the channel and are enjoying the videos!! 😁
Omg this is so good! Love your channel
I love how these artists use the actual actors from the films to depict the lotr characters. And how you in turn use them in your videos. They're like pogs lol. I love how you credit the art in your description of the video too. I mean I would expect nothing less lmaooo. Great video!!!!! These videos and the comment section (haha) bring joy to my day
Good and bad news: based on his letters and notes in Lost Tales, the Ents never again meet with the Entwives, and the former dwindle into the special trees to which mortal folk assign magical value, while the latter are never seen again. The Ents become more and more alike the trees they shepherd and love, and eventually become spirits of the forest from which we mortals derive many legends. The huorns go to sleep, and become the wildmost and contentious of "normal" trees with which our ancestors had to contend. Fangorn eventually fades into tree and nut and spirit, becoming a bit of the wildness that inhabits all trees in later ages, even as the magic fades and the later ages pass into the known history of humanfolk.
Words cannot describe the service you have provided mankind!
My hat is off to you sir and I applaud your efforts, you are a gentleman and a scholar.
May you be blessed with the light of Eärendil and may Eru guide your way! 🙏🏼
Loved hearing the backstory. Merry and Pippin meeting Treebeard was always one of my favorite moments in the book.
I was curious about one thing mentioned in the video about Saruman diminishing in power while imprisoned in Orthanc. How does that happen and what does that say abut the nature of magical power in Tolkien's world?
Cool groot cameo nerd of the rings. And I believe yavana saved the entwives but decided to keep them in the undying lands in order to protect them and perhaps the entwives were too scared to return to middle earth after the war of the last alliance. Maybe treebeard will reunite with her once he’s given passage to valinor!
man so happy to find this channel and see one about Fangorn. He is one of my favorites
So far this is the best video on the Ents and Treebeard. Well done:)
Thanks!
They were directly made from Eru, that is so epic. You guys are awesome for putting this up, thanks!
I've read the hobbit and the lord of the rings at least a dozen times. You do a great job on the history of the world that Tolkien created.
Dude, just found your channel and it got me through last week's entire week of work, thanks for being a nerd for us nerds
You, good sir, are a great storyteller. It wasn't until my dog nudged me that I realised I was quietly crying for the Ents. Off now to binge watch the rest of your videos.
When I first read Fellowship I thought it was a terrible idea for Gandalf to allow pippin and Mary to be a part of the fellowship but oh boy I was wrong. They contributed a lot to the war of the ring
Out of all characters from the Tolkien lore i feel great sorrow for Treebeard and his kin the most
Now, only the Lorax speaks for the trees.
That...was...brilliant! Having read TLOTR 5 times, I still gleaned new information from your introspective. Many thanks.
As I am sure Tolkien intended, I feel great pity for Treebeard. Pity not just for the loss of their entwives, nor just for their inability to further propagate. But pity for the way the world changed, discounting everything the ents were created to protect and pity for the fading usefulness over creatures so old and so wise. I am not that old, but old enough to see how this is the story of all of us who do grow old - or at least the story we fear will become ours.
@Eponymous Nerd: Been bingeing your channel for a few days now, and I really love your content. I wasn't sure about the readings w/ the voices at first, but they quickly grew on me. Well-researched and well-presented. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! So glad you are enjoying the channel. 😊 I will definitely keep creating vids every week! Thanks for watching!
I always loved Galadriel’s response to Treebeard. It fills me with hope for Arda, and a time at the end of the world when it will be restored, and elves, men, dwarves, and ents will return to life and live together in peace.
I encountered your channels few days ago and I have already watched so many videos and plan to watch them all
A great video by a great creator! Kudos to you, Nerd of the Rings!
Thank you my friend!
Great video man. Fangorn is one of my favorite characters!
This music, narrative and lore made me want to go plant some trees. I guess the Ents and their philosophies are the peak of a pastoral masterpiece.
Absolutely outstanding work. Thank you so much! Please keep it up, you and all who are helping you in your work, if any, are truly a blessing. I name you Friend, and blessed.
Thank you so much, my friend! (For now), it’s just me creating the videos. 😊 Though I would count my Patreon/RUclips supporters as playing a big role in making the videos happen as well. So glad to hear you are loving the channel. Thanks for watching/subscribing!
Lord of the Rings...the very greatest world ever created and yet it isn't even close to being complete. A snap shot of a world. Heart-filling and heart breaking.
You mention how Sam tells of a cousin seeing something that could be an Ent on the North Downs. What about the story told as the hobbits enter the Old Wood of how the trees there seem to move and change the trails. Also about how the trees attacked the fence? That sounds like Huorns or ents, especially when you consider Old Man Willow
Treebeard at the end saying the world is changing... with the music kicking in... chillz.
I swear this is the greatest channel
Out of all the races of Middle Earth it's the Ents I find the most beautiful yet melancholy at the same time. To be completely at one with nature yet cut off from the cycle of life in the form of children. It's heartbreaking.
You Sir, have shown your quality, of the very highest 😉 what a beautiful video!!! The artwork used is breathtaking!
Thank you, Lord of the Rings. I really thoroughly enjoyed this video. Honestly, LOTR has been helping me personally, and you and your videos has done a similar job. Honestly, there are no words. Thank you, Friend.
Do a travels video with the 9 nazgul! That would be so sweet. I was reading Unfinished Tales and found lots of information on where the 9 were during the fellowship of the ring that most people don’t know about. That video would do really well!
guys HELP, i'm addicted to this channel i can't stop watching
😊
I would watch the hell out of a Fangorn's travels show
Great video Matt! Treebeard and the Ents were such interesting characters! I really would love to see him or them hopefully in the new Amazon series.
In one of the AiME campaigns, you find an entwife named Witherfingers in the bad lands. One in our party asked her why she doesn't go somewhere green, why does she stay there, and our loremaster made the mistake of improvising, "Green?....what is green? I cannot remember green..." And it tugged on my heartstrings so much, I swore an oath on my people's honor that I would do my utmost to return her to her people as soon as I was able.
Our Loremaster said we massively changed a big part of the history going forward, because the land was scorched for a reason, and us reuniting an Entwife with the ents was huge
Your channel is really fun, and interesting. Thanks for the content
I've always loved the fact that in the movies, John Rhys-Davies (I may have misspelled that) appeared as both Gimli and Treebeard, considering ENTs and Dwarves aren't exactly each other's biggest fans
I like this in depth tale of the ENTS. I know so little . Great job.
I'm so freaking glad I found this rabbit hole!!!! amazing work. thank you for putting the work in and doing these so well.
I watch all your videos at least two times, one to really listen to it and one to fall asleep to
I’ve been binging this channel and a few other similar ones, and the end of every video leaves me with bittersweet chills, which then leads me to watch another one.. lol
I feel so bad for entwives :(
Great video btw
Well done! I love the use of maps in your videos!
Thanks my friend!
Best video yet! Also, your voice overs are so good!
Plot twist: Groot is an Enting
MY LAWD what a vid for sure now one of my favs love this.
These videos are so interesting really gives you an in-depth look into what the characters were up to
I need more Ent content. I really wanna make it a point to study them on a philosophical, and lore level. I love them
What I noticed while recently playing Lord of the Rings Online, in the far north of the region of Evendinim, there is a lone Ent with 3 or 4 Elves that you do quests for. Its a small detail, but its what I like about the LOTRO game
You have a new convert to your channel (me). I love your presentation, like a gifted teacher and story teller would do to draw you in. I also was blown away with the map of Beleriand - I had no idea it was so huge! I used to think that when Beleriend sank into the sea that it was just a west sliver of Eriador just beyond the Blue Moutnains. Because Beleriand and Eriador look so similar I thought they were the same place, just slightly altered in the later ages. But no! It was half the damn planet that fell into the sea!
So glad you found the channel! Thanks for subscribing!
And yes, it’s crazy how big Beleriand was! A huge part of the history too.
@@NerdoftheRings Thanks for putting out such quality content. I forgot to mention that I thought the voice acting was good, too. Was that all you?
Oh, thanks! Yes, all the voice work is my own. 😁
"I will stop it!", he boomed. Merri And Pippin like "ok boomer"
