I worked in a dive shop about 3 decades ago. Back then, for people who really needed glasses there was a company that would bond your prescription to your mask. I am not sure if they still do that but if you check out skin diver magazine you will probably see ads. It may be helpful for some.
Beau, having been a professional diver a good part of my life, we were taught to simply flip your head forward when you break the surface, and the water should shoot out of your snorkel, if not you still have a breath to get the rest out, just a FYI
Bo, for the hair problem they make a neoprene snorkel keeper and if the rubber on the back of the mask pulls hair use a neoprene strap cover. Also my kids found a bunch of treasures and trash while snorkeling today. They love your vids!
Hey AC I wanted to just give you a shout out. Your river treasure vids have really inspired my son. We watch most of your vids together. We went out just for fun, spontaneously purchased some masks with snorkels from Benny's. I'll admit I know they're poor quality. But we used them anyway. Every day on our last vacation. I used mine mainly to retrieve a $10 spinner lure I had lost on a log one morning before anyone woke up. Catching turtles. I even found another lure that I replaced the hooks on. You're a good guy brotha. Thanks for giving my kid something appropriate and inspiring to watch when he gets lost in RUclips land. Cuz god knows he sure does. But it's fine with me as long as he keeps finding fun things he wants to do, because I really enjoy my time with him. Next summer I'll invest in some quality gear and we are going to do it right.
As a diver in the UK I use Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo: Baby shampoo can be used just like commercial defogging solution. Many divers carry a bottle of watered-down baby shampoo with their dive gear. A few drops rubbed into the lens and then briefly rinsed out will keep a mask from fogging. Baby shampoo is preferable to standard shampoo, as it is generally hypo-allergenic, less irritating to eyes, and biodegradable. Baby shampoo smells good, too. 👌 keep up the good vlogs on your searching for treasure very inspirational 👏
Haters will hate. I enjoy your videos and adventures and thanks for sharing them. I got a Gopro last week and will be starting a channel soon and am very excited to share the experiences, history, and adventure of this hobby.
At 3:52, question from a lady about her hair being stuck in the strap, its called a "Scuba mask strap cover", I have that and I think it work good. They have it on amazon. Good job on your channel.
For the lady with long hair, I can recommend using a swim cap, but get the ones made of fabric instead of latex or silicone. I'm not sure if they're made of Lycra or spandex, but they are very stretchy so you can get long hair all in them and your head will stay cool. They are much more comfortable than the latex and silicone.
For that lady with the long hair getting tangled ......Buy a diving hood or a bathing cap ,that will keep your hair in place, under the hood or swimming cap and not tangle in the face mask strap.I did a lot of spearfishing when i was living down the east coast of Australia.......I have enjoyed every single vid of yours . thx Aquachigger
When ascending from deeper water all one needs to do is blow a small bubble or small amount of air up your snorkel and if your timing is good your snorkel will be clear when you hit the surface. No big blow or puff is needed. This serves to conserve energy and keeps one from getting tired out.
My solution to my long hair getting tangled is to wear a bandana. It also helps keep the top of my head from getting sunburned (my hair is a bit thin on top, but not so thin that I can apply sunscreen there). I never have problems with my beard and mustache; my mustache naturally angles down low enough from my nose that it's not a problem. I got my current mask custom fitted to my face, but if/when I need a new one I will definitely look for a mask with a purge valve. I bought mine a few years ago and they were not very common then. My biggest problem with snorkeling is that I float too well when my lungs are filled with air. It takes more energy for me to overcome the buoyancy than I can keep in a lung full of air, so I dive better when I expel 2/3s of the air from my lungs when I dive. Naturally this means I can't stay down very long, though. I've thought about carrying weights when snorkeling to counter this, but it seems like this might be a bad idea.
i remember my first time snorkeling. i panicked for a good 15minutes cause i couldn't get used to the fact that i had to breath with my face underwater. but then i got used to it and found some glasses
Educational video! It's been a few years since I've snorkled and some of these hints would have been helpful. I'm sure there are plenty of current people who will appreciate your advice.
Thanks for the tutorial Beau. Watching your videos has made me want to try free diving my local lakes and rives. I think I'll try the mask you've suggested.
For defogging my personal way of doing it is thouroughly washing ONLY the glass of the mask with detergent, then do the same thing with toothpaste, thoroughly clean the glass. And so u dont get fog everytime before u go diving spit in the mask, put it all over across the glass and give it just a little bit of water so the spit doesent affect ur seeing. This has worked for me and has not damaged my mask.
A very informative video, lots of questions I had answered :) One thing I've always wondered, is there some kind of mini-scuba setup where you basically have your setup, but connected to a small scuba tank that would not require full diving gear?
He explained that these videos were uploaded earlier for all of his patreons for his patreon page. Its hidden from general public until a week goes by. :)
Can you talk a little about where you can treasure hunt (public access)? Techniques for obtaining permission to treasure hunt. Riverbank right of way. Anything else beginners need to know to stay safe and legal.
Thank you for such an informative video. I have always wanted to learn about how to use a snorkel the correct way and thanks to you i now know how. Enjoy watching your videos a lot as there is great content and fun to watch.
Hey Beau! Great video. I took a PADI course but didn't finish. I realized at the time that there was nothing I could do with it. The water is usually quite tainted with silt, mud, gators and sharks. LOL. I live in Mobile, no beautiful rocky streams here. I am always on the edge of my seat watching your videos. Please keep em coming!
IT's nice that you have explained this. Maybe my hubby will join me on one of these type of adventures soon! I think he has always been afraid of breathing in under water. LOL! < - - - -
the last time i went snockling i smashed my face on a sand bar. i went to hospital and found out i broke my nose. my nose was bleeding for 2 hours. now my face is swolen and sore :( love the videos beau. keep it up .
They have an anti-fog wax in a lil jar you can buy. Buff your lenses and it should keep them from fogging for the duration of your underwater adventure time. :)
Just curious as to why not take a scuba class? You'd need to take the fresh water additional one as an add on but then you could stay under water a heck of a lot longer. I knew a guy who'd take his kayak out on a river then use a spare air (small tank that is refillable) and not the big tank on his back so he could stay under for 5 minutes at a time. Just seems like this would work better for what you do.
Perfect timing! I've been looking into snorkeling. You sometimes use fins, could you do a short video on when to use them and what kind you prefer? Thanks for the great videos!!
Really love the river hunting, but I miss the dry land hunting!! I guess it's more adequate to river hunt in the dead of summer so you can stay cool. Makes sense.
have you ever thought if comnecting a garden hose to your snorkel, and connecting the other end to a large piece of styrofoam to make deeper salvage trips?
Chigg can you comment on how you have the camera attached to the top of the mask. Does the mask come with the attachement point or is that something you MacGivered yourself
+Aquachigger they work well. it has the dry snorkel attachment. so I just breath out right before breaking the surface to releive the valve. it's working so far.
Hey Beau, any tips on how to recover metal relics in the river faster when you can't locate them right away? I use the Garrett Carrot, but it still takes FOREVER to find something, especially if it is small.
How can anyone hate on Chigg. He's the nicest guy! Love the vids!! Thanks for the links as always
agreed
Yeah!

Thanks Beau! I picked up a set of goggles, snorkel and flippers just the other day because of watching your videos! Thanks for the inspiration :)
This is great! I've been wondering about this ever since I started watching your videos. Now I can breathe easy.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I like finding stuff in rivers but i have also lost two mask/snorkels and my Gerber Blackie Collins kayak/ back up dive knife in the Housatonic river.
Thanks for the tutorial Beau. Watching your videos has made me want to try free diving my local lakes and rives. I think I'll try the mask you've suggested.
Keep it up man! Your channel is the bee's knees.

you can run a compresser off of a generator and connect an air line :)
Gloves, Chig! What about protective gloves while fanning the river bottoms? Use regular diving gloves or regular gardening gloves????
Can you talk a little about where you can treasure hunt (public access)? Techniques for obtaining permission to treasure hunt.
Riverbank right of way. Anything else beginners need to know to stay safe and legal.
Thank you for such an informative video. I have always wanted to learn about how to use a snorkel the correct way and thanks to you i now know how. Enjoy watching your videos a lot as there is great content and fun to watch.

They have an anti-fog wax in a lil jar you can buy. Buff your lenses and it should keep them from fogging for the duration of your underwater adventure time. :)

Really love the river hunting, but I miss the dry land hunting!! I guess it's more adequate to river hunt in the dead of summer so you can stay cool. Makes sense.
Can you test the 180° snorkel? I want to buy it but I don't know if it's really worth the money. Thanks!
have you ever thought if comnecting a garden hose to your snorkel, and connecting the other end to a large piece of styrofoam to make deeper salvage trips?
I have that action camera too, how did you attach it to the mask??? Is that mask has some kind of attachment piece on the top?
Could you toss up a link about the mask mount for your gopro as well please? Want to buy the mask and the mount together.
Great video. Thank you so much. Can you tell me how you get the GoPro Mount to stay on your mask? Did you drill a hole or did you use the adhesive?
New Zealand. .....thank you for the lesson that was cool Thank you!
Dude, you do some awesome videos, and now i know how to actually use a snorkel, i always come back out and dump it, lol
Chigg can you comment on how you have the camera attached to the top of the mask. Does the mask come with the attachement point or is that something you MacGivered yourself
snorkel full face masks are amazing.
+Aquachigger they work well. it has the dry snorkel attachment. so I just breath out right before breaking the surface to releive the valve. it's working so far.
+Aquachigger the Head Sea VU dry full face snorkeling mask is the one I've been using.
I have long hair also the way I keep my hair out of the mask and out of the straps is by just putting my hair back with a ponytail holder.
nice ..thx for this lessons
best teacher
What kind of bag do you use to put your treasures in? And what are the best kind of water shoes to use in the river?
Hey Beau, any tips on how to recover metal relics in the river faster when you can't locate them right away? I use the Garrett Carrot, but it still takes FOREVER to find something, especially if it is small.
Nice im going on a vacation soon and wanted to snorkel thanks for the tips :D
***** You're Great.
Do you use a weight belt at all? Or have some method of staying at the bottom when diving to grab something?
I liked, and subscribed!!!
