Well explained, exept the part of snorkel. I think you should explain WHY valves and splashguards are "big no no". "Inappropriate" isn't a reason, we talk here about whether it works well or not and why.
I learned so much from you tonight. This info is hard to get on websites somehow. Your channel is the best combination between fun stuff and knowledge sharing. Thank you and keep doing it!! :) (edit: and ofc I subscribed!)
The first mask I bought was the cressi nano and I still use it ever since. I worked in a dive shop and tried many different ones, but this one just fits best. There is the Sphera Freediving mask which is a ultra low volume mask with a big field of view. It's probably one of the best masks to freedive deep without having to use a noseclip, but it doesn't fit to many faces.
For people with a small face or who just like a small volume the Cressi Super Occhio is a great choice (which is probably why it's been in the marked for so many years). I've used it for underwater rugby as well as free diving and scuba diving. Only issue - no space for a nose clip as the lenses are not far enough apart.
Sporasub Mystic user here and a mares dual snorkel, for me nice and simple combo that is also very comfortable. If i spit in the mask before dive it never fogs up even after hours of diving.
The cressi superocchio is the only mask that fits me, I dread the day they finally take it out of production. Great mask to try on for people who have trouble finding masks in general!
I use the subgear steel comp. Very comfortable around my high nose bridge, nice low volume, fits my face very well. But I am interested in the Cressi Nano as well...
Thank you! After seeing this video, will return what I purchased from a LDS. Now I see, they do not cater to freediving, just scuba. Glad it has a 30 day return policy! St Augustine next week, to a REAL Freediving shop! Your the best, Adam!
I got really big trouble with using a snorkel. really not be used to wear that. Diving without a snorkel give me more confidence. I'm considering should I practice more to get used to wear a snorkel or should I just leave it.
I’ve been using the hammerhead MV3 action mask with purple glass coating (reduces glare or whatever) lol. It has an integral GoPro mount. The glass coating is starting to wear but it doesn’t effect the view through the lenses. I’ve been using it happily for almost 2 years.
The mask which fits me the best is an Aropec single lens frameless mask, but I also like my Scubapro Frameless Mini. The Scubapro is easier to equalize, but the nose pocket is too small. This can get painful on longer diving days. Both of them work well with up to a month of mustache growth.
My first mask came from the mirage barracuda snorkelling set. It super incredible quality FOR THE PRICE. Soft silicone in the mask, and a super comfortable mouth piece. Fins could be better though
I use sporasub piranha, but its nose part is a bit hard and sometime leaking when pinching the nose,. I will try micromask later after my saving enough hahaha... thanks for sharing Adam,. Great information as always... 😊👍
Hi Adam so I bought a nano it fits pretty good. Recently I bought a white Noah for my daughter. Tried it on wow like a suctions cup and super comfy had to buy a black one for myself. I know you said you can’t buy online but i live in an area of 90 % bubble makers. No where to buy
Thanks Adam......another awesome video. I'm not a free diver......I'm a bubble maker as you guys like to call us, I believe, but really enjoy your channel. Maybe not a direct member of your family that you love to talk about, but certainly a close relative.
Tusa mask also have prescription lenses. Some masks have standard design (shape) for the glass (oem lenses). These masks have a replaceable lenses where some lenses are graded (prescription lense). For snorkel, I tried a very simple j-shape snorkel (without purge and splash guard) but apparently, my gums are too sensitive which gave me bruises on my lower jaw gums. I ended up using kid friendly snorkel with very very soft mouth piece, but it has a purge and splash guard ... because it was for kid snorkeling hahah
hahahah well I bet you look very cute with your snorkel! ;) good to know about the Tusa masks! :) you can get J snorkels with soft silicon but if the kids one works then you're all good already :)
I ordered an Omer Alien mask online and got lucky, fits pretty great except the nose is a tiny bit big and prescription lenses up to -6.0 diopters are available for it, so I have -2.0s in mine, makes looking at sea life much more enjoyable
i used to have an omer alien and now i recently purchase a mares viper which ia a great mask, as you said it's a very personal choice :) . thank you again for your videos. Regards from Ireland.
I'm one of those with a weird face. My brows protrude a bit. My Omer Alien mask which is low volume and has little silicone on the brow section, so the seal there isn't perfect if I get the mask strap too tight or place it to the crown of the head. I must wear the mask with very little tightness on the strap and the strap must pass close to the ears. That way it's super comfortable and the seal is good even when I have a mustache + beard :)
Adam Freediver. to be fair, my beard doesn't get in the way as it isn't hairy where the mask seals. The only thing that could get in the way of a good seal is the moustache, and I never tried diving with a really thick one, it's relatively short, like your is sometimes. ;)
I used a cressi big eye evo mask & loved it until I lost it on a return trip from spearfishing.I Now have a cressi nano mirror mask & again find it a great fit even with my big nose😂...with both masks I had to shave as the silicone is soft.great video and keep up the good work👍🏻
Aqualung Sphera works best for me. It requires careful handling the plastic lenses easily scratch and you've to get used to distorted vision (takes may 1-2 hours to get used to). The second best is the Scubapro steel comp mask. Both masks very low volume.
I'm so myopic that the only place I have found via web searches who can provide me with a custom lens fit in a mask of my choice is in the UK. I have a significant astigmatism, as well as presbyopia, which makes any common 'off the shelve' masks useless. I currently wear an off the shelf, so to speak, Rx mask with contact lenses. My vision changes about once every 8-10 months, so I have been reluctant to send a mask to the UK yet. My 'case' is probably so rare that almost no diver, free, or scuba wishes there could be a better solution.
I use an Aqualung Sphera. Great mask, the volume is tiny (~65 ml), it is super comfortable with a very soft skirt and the 180 degree field of view is amazing. However the plastic lenses are fragile (e.g. the toothpaste cleaning method mentioned in this vid will scratch the shit out of them), prone to popping out and developing micro-cracks that leak. A lot of people report their vision is distorted with the curved lenses, but honestly I've never noticed it.
I'm personally not a big fan for those reasons you said....but it is still a great mask! I'd say you're most likely used to the way the lenses distort your vision. It doesn't take long to get used to it and then it's not a problem at all :)
I ended up getting an Aqualung Teknika...didn’t know much about this topic but the shop I went had a scuba water tank and let me try out a couple of masks. Thinking in retrospect I should have opted for a lighter mask. I think it makes a lot of difference specially when starting to go deeper to have a lower bulk mask . Aqualung Micro seems like a good option overall amongst freedivers...
been freediving for a few months now, but there are still new things i've learned from this vid. thanks! quick inquiry tho, about deep dive goggles, will you create a vid for that? also any idea about saline goggles? cheers!
Fluid goggles are just goggles with different lenses in them that are the same/similar density to water so you can see clearer with them. Not many competitive divers use them though and I personally dont like them. I'm not sure if I will make a video on it....it would be a short video! haha
I like the Aqualung Micromask. Low volume, good view, and fits great!! I think I spotted it on the wall behind you, might have been the same one you made fun of for the clear silicone!! 😂😂(It also comes in black though)
SPORASUB PIRANHA is a good mask for wider bigger faces and also has a good field of view. I've used it for scuba as well without any issues. Plus it is looking cool B-)
Well, the spit technique only works after you treat the lenses as Adam mentioned. Good thing he mentioned that because less people know about it, specially newbies ;)
Adam Freediver no tears shampoo from johnson and johnson mixed 50/50 with fresh water is a cheap and effective anti fogging tip. I use that over any other substance, smells nice too
genius on the no tears. i used dishwashing liquid and thats can be no fun at all. But wait a moment, is he saying that if you burn your mask it will never fog again? Because I put soap in my mask every dive..
Adam, I’d love to hear about and know more about those *goggles* (not masks) I see competition divers using. How do they work without the ability to exhale air into them? Do you ever use them? Why or why not? Thanks!
I'm late to the video, but I've been using the Salvimar Noah myself. The OLD ones are the good ones. The NEW ones have problems with the straps breaking. It's happened to several of my friends
Another great video from sensei Adam, Thank you for sharing your knowledge to us. Can you elaborate more on the issues about fogging goggles and the procedures on how you defog it or preventing it from fogging aside from the traditional spit method. Thank you so much sensei!
All my nephews and nieces snorkel with $100+ mask because I order online see I dont like or wont seal so I give to them lol I use hammerhead mv3 with gopro mount and amber tint for spearfishing. I also been told burning film off screws the temperament causing mask to shatter under pressure. I've never had a issue buring film off
Hey I dunno if you are going to answer, but I’m a bloody beginner and I found a really good offer, with fins, a snorkel and a mask( online from a serious shop) for 150€. Before the sale it was 250€, but now I’m not sure if I should by it because of the mask. Where I live there are none of these stores. Hope you’ll answer me 😊😀 Great video btw
@@AdamFreediver Thank you so much for your answer. I recently bought a pair of fins Cressi Gara 3000 ld, based on your reviews, my researches and personal feelings, and they are stellar. I want to ask you, regarding the fact that my Focus Cressi mask is old, not so much used and the nose pocket is larger than my nose, should I buy a new one, such as Cressi nano, a low volume mask. The only problem is that I cannot try how it fits on my face. I have a normal, small face 18 cm height on 13 cm width.
Question: How do Apnoe Masks perform on Scuba Diving? Is there any danger because of the smaller volume? Iam just starting with Apnoe and for my upcoming world travel i have to adjust the size of my travel gear. So one mask that could do both jobs would be perfect. Thanks in Advance Adam!
What about j tube snorkels with hidden purge valves like the aropec serpent v snorkel? At the moment im debating whether to buy that or a mares pro flex instead
I was aiming for a monocrystal mask, but in my local dive shops the ones I tried on didn't fit my face, and I didn't want to buy one online, so I ended up buying the Cressi Calibro in white and pink, very girly
My eyesight is really bad... I've just now begun to search for better gear for freediving and snorkeling. I'm 15 and still learning... Is there maybe a mask with lenses that act like lenses that you find in glasses or should I just use contact lenses.
I've been using contact lenses while diving for some time, and it never bothered me. It's probably cheaper too, if you are already using them out of the water
You can do either! There are lots of prescription masks (but they can be more expensive). Otherwise like my wife does, just wear your contacts with a regular mask
Mi mask has a prescription formula of -2.00. Solves my myopia under water and I can see perfectly. However, the additional lens makes it a bit harder to clean, so it tends to build up some fog if not cleaned and "anti-fogged" properly. But it's worth it; without it I could not see anything 1 meter in front of me.
Can you write name of masks in the comments next time I almost couldn't find the SALVIMAR Noah mask that you recommended because I wasn't sure what you said. Audio just isn't always great when compressed and the accent can make it difficult for newbies like me who don't know the names of brands yet. Great video though thanks for taking the time. I wish more people would do this with dive products.
Hey guys, im a freediver and after 5 years i got a new mask. i just got the mares xvision, and the moment i wear it fogs so bad, despite the fact that i put defoging paste before! Also when i dive in, water gets inside all the time and i have it pretty tigh on my face... Any suggestion?
Salvimar Noah Mask fits perfectly. I personally recommend for asians with small nose structure. The material is awesome too. #salvimarph #salvimarnoah #freediveph
I felt pressure between my eyebrows with my seac fox mask and I just watched your video, thank you for your information but I regret bought it online 😂
Question on masks I wish to learn to Free Dive but I also Scuba Dive I find the the seal is great on the one I have, but the mask that I have the part under the nose keeps pushing up and it hurts over time. Is there a Full fave Mask for Free Diving so this won't occur when free diving?
I use the cressi superocchio, a real classic, even with yellow frame (inherited from an older mask i had). My lil daugther uses a cressi minima and loves it. They are both very well suited for small face people, and have some of the smallest volumes in the market. Unfortunatelly, the minima is no longer available... :(
ah nice mask! It's just a simpler set up, less chance of inhaling water, more streamlined and there's no need for a purge valve anyway, J snorkels are easy to purge if you need to
Water is 800 times denser than air. So you want the least possible amount of drag. Purge valves and splash guards can add serious bulk like the Impulse 3 snorkel. I've tried them with my mask at normal tightness and the speed we move with during a freedive and the sheer bulk of the snorkel partially pulls the mask down my face and floods. Not to mention we shouldn't be purging as soon as we hit the surface anyway. Larger snorkels can get really annoying as they flop around hitting your face. Aaaand there's more innuendo for ya lol
I sell a bunch of spearfishing masks on eBay. I've probably tried 30 different masks just when I think I found the perfect fit I'll try something else and it fits even better. Masks are definitely one of few things in life where it's not how much you spend but how well it fits you.
I saw "MASKS for Free.." and got hella exited.
hahahahahaha ah sorry bro! haha
Lol

Scuba pro solo here. It's very comfortable and offers good visibility, although it still fogs a bit. Great video 👌

This answered many of my questions that other videos did not address, especially field of view. Thanks!
Sporasub Mystic user here and a mares dual snorkel, for me nice and simple combo that is also very comfortable. If i spit in the mask before dive it never fogs up even after hours of diving.
You must have the magic spit! ;)

I doubt they'll ever take it out of production. it's a classic ;)
Shana Van Hauwermeiren I'll have a give-away tomorrow for free dive mask and snorkel
Also as well as goos old spit, Sea Drops or the Cressi de-misting liquid is great. When I was a kid we used a slice of potato. Also brilliant!
Needs to be cut fresh though, and throw it away before your dive bag becomes a petri dish of rotting vegetables (this has happened to me too).
ah wow! I've never heard of potatoes before. I'll give it a go ;)
i was so confused until i saw your video!!! thank you very much mate!!!
absolute pleasure :)
Cressi f1. For general purpose snorkelling/ spear fishing. Loved it so far

Oh noo, i just bought my mask online and haven't try it yet. Thank you Adam for your explanation.
Hey Adam, why do you suggest we avoid snorkels with a splash guard or a purge valve. Aren't those more practical?
I’ve been using the hammerhead MV3 action mask with purple glass coating (reduces glare or whatever) lol. It has an integral GoPro mount. The glass coating is starting to wear but it doesn’t effect the view through the lenses. I’ve been using it happily for almost 2 years.
I quite like that mask myself. I always stay away from coatings personally but the Go Pro mount is always welcome in a mask!

it's a great mask :)
They perform really well while scuba diving :) I prefer using them
@@AdamFreediver Thanks for the fast reply !! I couldnt find any answer to this question in the Internet !
What about j tube snorkels with hidden purge valves like the aropec serpent v snorkel? At the moment im debating whether to buy that or a mares pro flex instead
I'd be for the Mares pro myself even though I really don't like Mares products. Simple is better :)
Hi Adam, I’m a big fan of your vids and hope someday I can do what you do👍🏻 keep doing what ya do man👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
thank you so much! I really appreciate that :)
I've got the OMER Alien mask, and it's been great for me
that is a great mask!
Omer Alien here as well, great mask.
Okay, thank you!
Magic_YT doctors sell a mask for people who wear glasses go to a glasses store and ask them for them
Mi mask has a prescription formula of -2.00.
Hey Adam, can you do a video on how not to drown using a snorkel?
hahahha! I can! I actually just made plans to do this last night
Thanks for the reply! It turned out the mask had a hole :/ and thankfully i returned it and got another one!
I use the scubapro devil.
Nice video 👍
thank you :) Scuba Pro make good masks :)
I just bought a Rob Allen Cubera Red tinted mask, thoughts on it? its really good in my opinion
I love that mask- but it just depends if it fits your face well. if it does then you're cheering :)
any tips for trying on masks in the current climate where shops dont allow trying on masks?
Thanks for all the great tips again🤙🏽
so so welcome Jeff :)
Salvimar Noah Mask fits perfectly. I personally recommend for asians with small nose structure. The material is awesome too. #salvimarph #salvimarnoah #freediveph
agreed! I use that mask :)
I felt pressure between my eyebrows with my seac fox mask and I just watched your video, thank you for your information but I regret bought it online 😂
ah no that sucks. Just pop into a dive shop if you can and try some others out :)
i thought of attaching magnets to the snorkel and mask band do you think this'd be a good idea?
Really excited for the wetsuit one
Coming Monday/Tuesday next week :)
My always favorite is Cressi Minima! 👍☺
The worst mask is Sporasub Piranha!!! ( Painful during the pressure on cheekbone)
Thanks for your suggestions mate!
Realy good tips! Thanks ☺
You're so welcome Rune :) glad the video was helpful
I use the Omer Alien and it works just fine
Question on masks I wish to learn to Free Dive but I also Scuba Dive I find the the seal is great on the one I have, but the mask that I have the part under the nose keeps pushing up and it hurts over time. Is there a Full fave Mask for Free Diving so this won't occur when free diving?
There isn't full face mask for freediving but if you try a few other masks out i'm sure you'll find one that doesn't push up against your nose :)
Classic masks indeed! :) I didn't know they stopped making the minima- Cressi has been making those masks for ages!
Immersion freediving spirit black, suits me very well...
that's quite a nice mask
I personnally use a Cressi Nano mask which is awesome. About the snorkel, why is it better without valve ?
ah nice mask!
Aletchou I'll have a give-away tomorrow for free dive mask and snorkel by kraken Aquatics
Also you can get 20% off by using my promo code MRFLIP20
I sell a bunch of spearfishing masks on eBay. I've probably tried 30 different masks just when I think I found the perfect fit I'll try something else and it fits even better. Masks are definitely one of few things in life where it's not how much you spend but how well it fits you.
Great vid again! I'm using the Aqualing Sphera Mask, is nice to me (but i'm a recreational diver, so no real experience here...)
It's a great mask! I personally dont like it for me but it's a great mask :)
Nice easy to follow videos. Keep up the good work Adam!
Is it neccessary I have mask (eyes + nose) covered or I can simply use swimming goggle + tube?
you need to cover the nose :) that way you can equalise the mask, otherwise pressure will build up in front of your eyes
