This movie inspired Octavia Butler to write sci-fi. She saw it at 8 years old and thought "I could write a better story than that."
What an amazing yet sad life she had. A black girl raised by a widowed mother in the 50s and 60s, no doubt experiencing all sorts of racism both personal and systemic. Became a pioneer for black authors in Sci Fi. Then died tragically young
In a fair world she'd still be alive and living her dream
Well, considering I never heard of Octavia Butler... She is probably better known in the USA.
@@SwiftNimblefoot 'I've not heard of her' is always a far too small a sample base to work from for anything - I was listening to a book program on Radio France Culture the other day which was full of praise for her. I can tell you they think very highly of here there.

There is a lot of potential for a closed circuit story about being trapped on an inn with strangers -including someone who has murdered someone before - while an alien decides what to do with humanity.
The premise is intriguing, ngl.

There was a Twilight Zone episode with that premise, "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?"

I was really hoping you’d try asking the alien women what she called Uranus. It seemed like such a no brainer to ask.
Holy smokes, Hazel Court is regal in this one. Three years later she starred in Curse of Frankenstein (1957), and in the '60s became a fixture in classic AIP and Hammer horror movies.
This was the film that inspired author Octavia Butler to become an author. In a way that Butler thought "I could do better."
I love how her gun vaporises everything except glasses 🤓
Dude, Patricia Lafan....especially in that costume....is entertaining enough for any ten movies. She's the original and still the best Cruella DeVil.

yeah, also that bit at 10:00 about the "miscalculation"... we later find out that Nyah's ship is an experimental prototype, and... she actually has no idea how to fix it. The repairs are a mix of the ship repairing itself, and the robot doing stuff. Apparently, she didn't BUILD the ship, she's just flying it. Also... the plane at the beginning exploded because of Nyah's flying skills. Not 100% sure if she actually collided with it on accident, or what, but yeah.... This is a craft that Nyah isn't actually all that familiar with.

I really appreciate the fact that Mike never loosened his tie, or unbuttoned his jacket during the whole martian Invasion. The man's a class act, all the way.
I find the actress who played the Devil Girl… cute. She’s trying for regal and intimidating, with a little success, but mostly she’s just cute.
I think she must have used her discomfort from that stupid costume in her performance.
That's the legendary Patricia Lafan, the original voice of Cruella DeVil.
And it has Hazel Court, one of the great horror movie queens.
Hazel Court was in Curse of Frankenstein and Masque of the Red Death.
Just witnessed her most famous role as the empress Poppea teamed up with mighty Peter Ustinov in the '51 blockbuster Quo Vadis. Her elegant/arrogant appearance paired with devilish acting was exactly spot on and left a remarkable impression.

Way she took that gun after he shot at her 9 times has to be the best response to violence from an alien ever, I mean that scientist shocked Calvin a little in Life and it went on a mortal kombat murder spree
yeah, it's like "stop doing that, I don't like it." It really went a long way to selling the idea Nyah sees the humans as no threat at all.

It's good to see in a movie about an alien invasion they finally get to the alien invader. Although production wise compared to Plan 9 (the holy grail of bad space invasion movies) this one almost looks like 2001.

I LOVE this movie! It also makes a great drinking game. Anytime someone mentions booze, drinks booze, or when the Martian girl belittles earth/says something about Mars is so much better TAKE A SHOT.

Those glasses are amazingly durable to survive being vaporized. Those things make no scratch lenses look like paper mache.
Whenever I watch Mark's older videos, the "Welcome Back THOOOOO The Show" is so short, it just doesn't hit right

The devil oftentimes shown as being red as well as the planet Mars which is the red planet. I get the connection. Also hell is often times portrayed as being a red fiery place.

I'd forgotten how bad early colorization looked, especially during anything like action. Like when the escapee is running around in the woods, the color periodically vanishes from his face.
