This is, without a doubt, one of the most eagerly anticipated runs since it became possible to TAS Windows games. Cave Story, made by Pixel in 2004, is a famous indie game notable for being made entirely by one person. You can download it for free here: www.cavestory.org/
This playthrough saves Curly and finishes with the best ending after beating Ballos. The author's commentary is included.
A high-quality version of this run is available via Bittorrent: tracker.tasvideos.org/cavestor...

Update 2011-12-05: Amaya Daisuke, the creator of Cave Story, responds to a question on Twitter:
sirbastille wrote: @amaya_pixel Did you ever watch the TAS ( • Cave Story (洞窟物語) TAS ... ) of Cave Story and if so, were there any tricks used that surprised even you?

To those asking about the fourth ending: that's a fan-made hack. It's not in the original game. The video depicting it as a real part of the original game was an elaborate April Fools prank. (The fourth ending referred to on the Steam page probably refers to the Mimiga mask ending.)
Please see x.co/wA24 and x.co/wA2C for more information. - Игры
I just want to remind everyone: there's a much nicer video of this same speedrun available here: ruclips.net/video/rbQj5NiQ4L8/видео.html
Also with commentary, with fixed font, and 50fps instead of 25fps!
Thanks, this is my favorite speedrun.
Are you doing alright these years?
@@orangen2311 I'm good, thanks for asking! Hope you guys are all good too
not sure how good a place this is to ask, but......... is there a possibility of Final Fantasy XAT being put up for download again? all the links are dead
@@fweged4353 Oh wow, amazing that you remember that. Yeah, we have the download for that, we're planning to put it up again. I'm not sure if you are an old GW/Gaming World member but if you join the Discord ( discord.gg/Ysy8TSNYVP ) I'll get you a link to it when it's uploaded
Skillful, silent, and full of interesting text commentary.
Beautiful.

I just realized that I saw the entire video whitout the author commentarys
Screw it I am going to watch it again
35:10 It entertains me greatly to notice that both Super Metroid and Cave Story have an item-guarding miniboss that's skippable by just exiting the room fast enough.
***** Are you talking about the Torizo?
TheSuckerOfTheWorld Yup.
The Bomb Torizo or the Golden Torizo? It's been so long since I played Super, I can't remember which one.
+Tattle Games bomb Torizo.
Thanks.

Combined with the commentary, this is probably my favorite TAS of all time.

A lot faster...

OMFG, shut the hell up boi!!!
Why is everybody yelling at this person?
My man.... that's totally not me....... k it was me lol, a toxic 8 or a 9 year old on the internet. Can't believe it's been 4 years since I post that.
But actually what happened here

"This yellow cloud enemy has a ridiculous amount of HP"
_Kills is before it even gets to 4_
I love how the game just completely changes upon acquiring the booster 2.0
I actually really liked this. I watched all of it. I usually don't like TAS, but I really appreciate you putting in the silly comments and extra pointless shootings to be an entertainer rather than just a showoff.
The nature of TAS is to be a showoff. That's where the entertainment comes from lol. Still, you're right about him doing a really good job of making it more entertaining than most TAS. This is still my favorite TAS video to this day.
@@PastelPiku yeah, anyways there's that kind of TASes that are literally showoffs, "playaround" i think they are called

To whoever posted about the 4th ending being a possible TAS goal: sorry, I accidentally deleted your message. (Clicked the wrong link, RUclips didn't ask for confirmation and I can't undelete it because this site is horrible.)
But in any case, the infamous 4th ending is a mod. The video describing it as being real was an elaborate April Fools joke. It's a very well constructed mod, though.

Flying Killer Robots: The TAS
I love how you rampage through everything like a boss
"I wish Quote could carry more dogs at once." Wish granted, that's now in the Switch version! Also, you can skip cutscenes to make them go faster, making the Switch version the definitive Cave Story experience.
Pretty sure that's just a Cave Story+ feature, I know I did it on steam and it may have even been possible on the enhanced version for the Wii.
@@TheTrueNehme nope. ive tried to hold multiple dogs on pc cave story +. it failed me
48:17-48:21 lmao that face Ballos makes when he gets instakilled
That was a really good move on the part of the person who made the April Fools joke, because it instantly rebutted everybody who actually took the time to try (and found it to be fake). It's called "moving the goalposts". Since 17 minutes is almost impossibly difficult, virtually undoable without TAS tools, no one could test it anymore. Even the SDA speedrunners, literally the world's best gamers, were about 6 minutes too late. So the 17 minutes thing was just a trick, and it worked really well.
"Quote murdered Toroko!"
what
17:21 The best is seeing these little things you do to help the nano seconds pass more quickly >:U
There should be some "Let's TAS" channel where they make commentary TAS like this. I love how this dude explain why he does this and that when most TAS-er don't
I'm 8 years late but yeah
I'll be honest, I've watched this way to much. About 5 times its so good
42:21 to 43:06 pretty much sums up the whole video
It looks really fun to use the unlimited booster.
For those of you wondering about where the commentary is...
Turn on subtitles.
I realized that 7 min into the video.
Thank you. I kept seeing people saying they like the commentary and it says commentary in the title but I didn't hear or see any text so I thought the poster took out the commentary.
It's so satisfying to see (and hear) him shoot in every direction possible with every weapons at once
Epic dialogue time save at 4:00
this is my favorite TAS i've seen so far. i've watched it all the way through at least three times.
Awesome and fun to watch. I always admire the amount of work and skill that is put into TASes like these, and the author's comments were a nice bonus. When even the creator of the game is impressed, you know you did a good job!
Congratulations, you have successfully owned Cave Story. I can't even beat it without time constraints...
I love the commentary, probably the best and most informative tas I've erver watched. Thanks for sharing.
I really enjoy watching TASes in general, but the commentary on this one made it top-notch. Incredible job.
That commentary is a really nice touch. Great speedrun all in all.
this is honestly one of the all-time great TASes for me
The part where he got the fireball and switched between the two weapons was priceless
The commentary delivered here makes it always the most entertaining Cave Story TAS to watch
Wow. The commentary makes the TAS that more awesome.
epic TAS, well done sir. and i wish every TAS had commentary that was as useful and funny!
If all the killer robots were like this, then I can see why everybody would be afraid of them.
Yes
Holy crap! So many shots fired! Taking hits to your advantage, and you killed (mostly) every boss really fast! I give this 10 tas' out of 10 tas'
At 13:50 the player switches to the rocket launcher at the last second to make it look like Quote just blew the door down with his gun. Wonderful touches that make this playthrough awesome!
Love the captions that explain everything you're doing.
the final cave .... its like he didnt think the ogre boss existed
Yee
This is just awesome, i love the commentary =D
This is truely an amazing TAS
I love the commentary.

Well it's more than I was ever expecting from a Cave Story TAS. Well done.
its been years but i come back to this video, its very satisfying to watch
Amazing to see Cave Story played like this...
I never even considered multiple weapons at the same time!
Awesome TAS!
This is one of my all time favourite TAS videos (other favourites being Super Mario 64 "0 star" and Super Mario World "96 exits") and also one of my all time favourite games so it makes me really happy that this was the first ever TAS of a windows game at tasvideos
This was very amazing! Thank you :)
The movement with both the Machine Gun and Booster is like watching an elegant choreography, it almost makes me wish the Booster 2.0 was unlocked sooner to see how you could've glided through earlier sections of the game.
This just might be my favourite TAS ever. Of all time.
Man, I love the little notes you add, more TAS runners should do that.
32:55 "I wonder who built this cozy house and filled it with all the stuff I need."
...Yeah! I mean, yeah!
When I first played through this segment of the game (not knowing where anything hidden is), I felt like shit. Toroko died, King died, Booster died, and then Curly....well, first I saved her life but then she immediately sacrificed it to save mine, and Sue...Sue, who the plot had been hinting was so important (I totally thought Sue and King were going to spent most of the game working together to get Toroko back. Don't you dare call it predictable, its called a trope! They exist for a reason.), was kidnapped along with the rest of the Mimiga, and might even now already be turned into monsters. I took the surrender ending just so at least I could leave the island with one person who didn't fucking die. (...even if that person WAS Kazuma)
But its okay kids! It turns out you can save someone! You can save the least interesting character....if you look for a hook when a normal person would be freaking out over drowning...and making a jump that the game *really* doesn't want you to make...and if all that's not bad enough there's also the fact THAT THIS HOUSE WITH *ROBOT DRYING MANUALS* BREAKS THE FOURTH WALL BY ITS MERE HYPER-CONVENIENT EXISTENCE!
That Rage.
*RAGE*
Um- Announcer, no- Stop spamming- STAAAHHHP!! I WANT NICE THINGS!!
This is beautiful.
one of the speedruns I've been looking forward too
thanks to you i was able to get the best ending...i used your video as a walkthrough
No Polar Star tho :(
@@Quickness_Fitness well the spur isn't necessary, but yea it does feel wrong to not go for spur in a best ending run.
I had no idea what this game was. I dont understand a letter of japanese/kanji but your comentaries made it just as entertaining as a MMX TAS, a game which i love and know inside and out. I wish more TAS players used it to describe the tricks they use, otherwise its easy to mistake damage taken for randomness when in fact it is extremely calculated. Thanks!
so much subtle stuff in this. props
First CS speedrun I've seen
Game still amazes me after all these years

duh ok
Connor Young Which movie??
The part where he climbs up the outer wall is FUCKING RIDICULOUS.
every TAS game never failed to amuse me XD
TAS really shows you the true reactions a robot like Quote should have
actual menace.
It's hard to describe by words how terrifyingly good this is
It goes one further than slow motion, the game is paused and they play the game frame by frame and imput commands on the frames that are needed accordingly for the 'perfect play'. They also use savestates to overwrite any mistakes, anywhere, at anytime.
I think my favorite part of this by far would have to be the fifth dog. Like Quote just shows up at this frail old lady’s house, sees that she’s been beaten to a pulp, steals her dog, and runs off in a murderous rampage
That time of year again; got the popcorn on the ready.
I'd be dead at 0:20
The CC commentary is hilarious.
You're not the first person to ask about this. But the 4th ending is actually a fan-made modification that got passed off as real as an April Fools joke. I've added some more information at the bottom of the description.
That was the most badass thing I have ever seen
I love how quote and curly absolutely obliterate Ballos' final form
AHAHA, i had no idea you could ride the bug through that cutscene. that's awesome! also, dem captions be movin' FAST.
Having a machine gun doesn’t matter when you have the power of button mashing
My jaw completely dropped in the last cave run.
They're probably talking about the Mimiga mask ending (which is a separate achievement in the Steam version). It's not the ending you're talking about, that one's definitely a mod. A very cool one for sure, but TAS runs are generally only made from original, unmodified versions of the game.
See x.co-wA24 and x.co-wA2C (replace - with /) for more information.
This was prolly as entertaining as the speedruns of sonic 3 and knuckles run. Good showmanship.
