- Castle Peak Trail is a popular destination for summer hiking and winter snowshoeing or backcountry skiing. Castle Peak trail is heavily traveled 6 miles with 1800 ft. elevation gain if you choose to go to the top of the peaks. This trail is perfect for beginner snowshoe to the advanced. You can choose to only go up to the first peak, Andesite Ridge, or to continue on to Basin Peak.
This trail is perfect for beginners to learn how to snowshoe or cross-country skiers. You choose the length, elevation gain on a nicely groomed trail. This is an easy access trail from I-80 near donner. Parking can be a challenge. The summit is about 3 miles from the trail head. We did not go all the way up to the peak this time but stopped and enjoyed the view from the ridgeline.
Getting to the trailhead:
I-80 to Boreal/Castle Peak exit. The trailhead is just north of the westbound on and off-ramp. There is limited parking but do make sure you look for the no parking signs. We saw a ton of cars with tickets for parking illegally. You can park at the Sno-park near Boreal Inn but make sure to get a parking permit. I agree 100% I am always saying when I am filming "Wow it is gorgeous out here" Than I look at my video and it just doesn't do it justice. I love the snow all over the top of the trees

Oh, that's lovely! I used to do quite a bit of snow shoeing when I lived in Reno. I've dealt with the blisters, too. No fun. Maybe I'll see you up there one day.

I wish it was like a walk lol. Snowshoeing is so much more work than hiking. Your legs are spread more and you have to lift your legs more. So your thighs feel the burn

My mom lives in Oregon and got into snowshoeing in her 70's (no joke). She went out quite a few times with a group of very fit senior citizens and really enjoyed it. Now she's 87 and doesn't go snowshoeing anymore though her health is still very good for nearly 90. I was visiting from Florida about 3 years ago and saw her nice snowshoes in the closet. She saw me looking at them and said, "would you like to have them?" I said, "I live in Central Florida mom." We got a chuckle out of that. Nice blister by the way. I've definitely been there! As a former infantry marine I consider myself something of an expert on getting blisters! I get them on my hands now instead of my feet since taking up canoeing. Nice video Kathy. That's some beautiful country out where you live. I miss the west. Stay safe.
What a great story. I hope to become one of those very fit senior citizens lol. How cool it is that she still has her pair of shoes. I am not so proud of the blister but I had only gone a handful of times last year at the end of the season and for really short distances. After I was on that mountain top and I could feel the blister I remembered that the boots didn't fit. I now have a great new pair and happy feet again. :) Any time you in this area as you told me, I'd be happy to be your guide and show you a few lakes :)

This is the second year that I really started to hike in the winter due to thinking I couldn't when it was storming. Now that I am hiking more I find I love to be out in the snow and rain hiking. You should rent a pair to make sure you like it. I bet you will!

Lucky you carried some first aid with you to help with the blister. Fantastic views and way to go making it to the top, especially with snow shoes on.
I cant wait to do this one in the summer when there is no snow so I can get farther on the trail and see more views. I got rid of those boots, no more blisters :)

Super cool scenery with a picturesque winter wonderland while snowshoeing to Castle Peak ! Kathy have you been lifting at the knees or the toes when snowshoeing , with the toes there will be tendency for heel rub and blister situation ....Extra pair of thin thermal or wool socks to fit snugly in the boot ! I have always wanted to go snowshoeing. We are headed to Steamboat Springs next month I may have to try it!!!
I think you should give it a try. Just remember it takes a little more work cause your legs are slightly farther apart and depending on how deep the snow is. You have to lift your legs higher than just hiking. I didn't think I liked it much last year, but now I love the places I get to see I won't be able to in the winter time. I will be looking forward to seeing if you do it in Steamboat Springs!

I always says how lucky I am to live in this area. This was amazing views but a little more crowded than I like. Wait till you see the peak I conquered yesterday. :) You have been in the snow lately from the pictures I see on IG. Just tie some tennis rackets to your shoes and give it a try ha-ha.
@@KathysOutdoorAdventures Tennis rackets LOL that's funny! Bet that would get some looks. I was out long enough to take some very short video of the ice on the trees then went back in. That was enough for me lol.

I am starting to think Tahoe is amazing all year round. I just never got out to see the real beauty of it. Poor Milin, what happened?
