    Apollo's hand in the original version looks MORE REALISTIC than the CGI-generated hand, although it was done correctly when the star ship's phasers struck the temple, effectively neutralizing the field of energy (hand), causing it to fade and eventually disappeared. At least the CGI FX didn't change the way Apollo's temple was destroyed. THAT WAS AWESOME FX, WHETHER ORIGINAL OR ENHANCED!!

  • @trevorbrown6654
    @trevorbrown6654 2 года назад +5

    The hand in the original version was actually that of Gene Roddenberry so by by removing it and replacing it with a CGI version they are effectively wiping out a cameo appearance from him.

    I generally prefer the originals, but one thing that's always bothered me in them is actually fixed here. In the originals, whenever the Enterprise tries to steer around something, that something moves across the frame, but the stars don't! This is fixed in the remaster. Also in the original, when we see the Enterprise, it's in deep space with stars moving by. The remaster gets it right, actually _showing_ the planet and the keeping the stars distant and still.
    One thing I'd like to add is the effect when Apollo sends Scotty hurtling across the marble floor. Extremely well done! I'm glad the CGI-meisters didn't mess with that.

    • @fragmentalstew
      @fragmentalstew 6 лет назад

      In the shots outside the planet, the stars actually do move, but they move slowly, in a way consistent with the planets movement through space. Which I appreciate.

    OK Commenters ; Which version would look you think better if broadcast in 1968?
    (1) on a big 25 inch color TV that is close to a TV station.
    (2) IF viewed in Black & White on a 13 inch TV in the deep fringe area with gobs of snow? Some of the smaller CGI stuff might be lost in the snow of the poor analog signal. Also when near an airport the signal would flutter when planes were nearby. I watched reruns of star trek on a 13 inch BW TV in the deep fringe. Made a custom Yagi and had an amplifier to pick up star trek reruns!

    I'm split down the middle with the giant green hand. As far as the CGI, I like the idea of the hand coming from the planet surface, and not just out of thin air. (Or would that be space?) As well as the shot of the hand holding the Enterprise in place over the planet. However on the other side of the coin, many here have complained the CG hand looks too soft and fake, but the original is cleaner and more defined. And I agree with them. Maybe the animators needed to take more time with testing the effects first?

    • @MoniqueFromPlymouth
      @MoniqueFromPlymouth 4 года назад +3

      I believe the animators intended to make the CG hand look soft and have a fuzzy glow, since Spock explained after he seeing it through the scope that it was a field of energy.

    The new Enterprise shots are better because they don't have to use a physical model, but that CGI hand is awful. The original looks clearer and the way that CGI hand is grabbing looks cheesy and wrong. How did they make the hand look worse and less effective?

    It's a travesty that they attempted to improve upon the original special effects of the series. Almost criminal in an artistic sense. The side by side comparison show how it dramatically altered a single episode. As an early Star Trek fan, the revised graphics takes much away from the original series. The revision should not even claim the TOS title. Awful, awful, awful. :'(

    The original 'hand' was played by the actor who played Apollo. This uncredited 'character' plays a significant enough role in this episode, but someone thought it was necessary to replace this with cg. And we should accept this because ... technology? Unacceptable. CG trek has lost the 'vacuum tube' look in every way and it is %100 sterile silicon digitization of what should be eternal art.

  • @johnwang9914
    @johnwang9914 3 года назад +2

    As good as the CGI are, the show didn't need them and to an extent the original effects are part of the show's charm. Noe with streaming, the original shows will become harder to view and that's the true loss, that the CGI versions will supplant the originals. The CGI versions do edit out some of the scenes so we are getting less of what the shows were.

  • @JonathanRodd
    @JonathanRodd 4 года назад +1

    I don't know why they arbitrarily decided to change the phaser color (unless the color was inconsistent throughout the series and they were trying to make it consistent) But yeah, the really glaring problem is how bad the hand looks on the CGI effect.

  • @screenplayhouse4932
    @screenplayhouse4932 4 года назад +1

    I rewatched this episode last night. I believe a team is going to have to go back through this series and remaster again. But do it RIGHT this time.
    1. I want the entire series turned wider-screen. Yes, I made that term up and I use it in my home. If you trim any episode of Trek right now to fit a normal widescreen TV -- you lose too much information. However -- if you trim a little off the top and a lot off the bottom -- you can make the image significantly wider without much loss. Two thin black bars on the sides sure beat two giant ones. I've done this with lots of series from this era and you'd be surprised how many don't suffer from my reshaping.
    Now, sometimes wider-screen does chop too much away. Like some of those super-close ups on Shatner. Here's the pricey solution: use CGI to add my image around the closeups. Many shows have the camera planted in place and so it's not that hard to 'restore' the set off-camera since everyone knows what it looks like.
    2. Most of this episode takes place 'outside' but it's really a studio. Can you imagine how amazing this would look if they filled out the background with purple mountains majesty? Adjusted the light and the air to 'feel' outside?
    3. 'Giant' Apollo in the last shots is terrible. Wrong lighting, wrong colors, and he appears to have his feet cut off. This needs to be completely redone.
    4. The animated lightening was cute in the day but yeah this needs a rethink.
    To this day NOTHING beats that stunt guy who is sent flying across the set and nearly took his head off for his troubles. WOW.
