There hasn't been much hate for it since the 90s.
I love it too but they had reason to be upset.. It's not written by Christians and there are likely things 'added' to and 'removed' from the production regarding their scriptures.. You'd be annoyed too

I use to do them... way, way back. Now I still try but they break.
But still, I persist and adapt them to convey the visceral anguish of the moment, the emotional breakdown of finally giving up and giving in... It ain't winning any Tony Awards, but it reminds me why this song is so emotionally powerful.
I just go into falsetto and it usually ends up decent 🤷♀️
@@darceygrace634 Same. I go chest for lower notes and falsetto for higher notes. It ain't that bad if you know how to transition smoothly enough (which I don't 😂)

Love singing this song. These are the moments when I wish I had the natural capacity to sing low notes like men more naturally, and not vocal fry it 😂 I know if a girl (like me lol) wanted to sing a guy song, they could adapt the notes, just sing it higher, but I really don't like changing it up, I like the original.

Tim Rice wrote those fantastic lyrics, but made mistakes: Jesus was NEVER scared to die nor doubted why He was to die. He ask the Lord to stop this "passion" but finally accepted it. What made this "passion" extremely terrible was that He saw and felt the weight of ALL of Humanity's sins (past, present, and future) upon Himself, and held onto it with all the pains of the lashings and Crucifixion. When He released it, He said "It is finished!" then gave up His Spirit (He was never killed). That is what we must remember of His sacrifice!!
see, it was on purpose, in the film they did not attach to the Bible words, instead of showing a Christ who accepted gods will , he was more human , more thinking, more doubtful, and the trick was that in the film this Christ really did not want to die, and questioned God what in the Bible would not appear, I think it was one of the reasons why many Christian people were against this film and in some " countries " even banned...and of course it was time that some Christ would be against gods will who only wanted to kill, in my case, I hate the Bible and the submissive "devotees" , so I admired the guts of the flims director or composer to show a more human Christ, who argues, gets mad at god, and questions,,,and at last he accepted his will , but these words were crucial, Kill me .,Beat me, Hit me,, so an unfair and despotic father, indeed,,,,I love the film and this song was to me a whole revolution for those close_minded and fanatic Christians

Jesus was so scared He was literally sweating blood.
It is not a mistake to re-interpret a work of fiction to make it more relatable to a modern audience. It may or may not be appreciated by the original authors, but since all of them are quite dead, and most of them were unknown anyway, the point is moot. Indeed, if you cannot show a copyright holder, nobody cares. Particularly not me. ;-)
