MEEN POLLICHATHU
Preparation time 10 minutes
Cooking time 15-20 minutes
Serve 2
Ingredients
For Marination
2 tsp Lemon juice, नींबू का रस
1 tsp Ginger Garlic paste, अदरक लहसुन का पेस्ट
Salt to taste, नमक स्वादअनुसार
½ tsp Degi red chilli powder, देगी लाल मिर्च पाउडर
¼ tsp Turmeric powder, हल्दी पाउडर
½ tsp Oil, तेल
2 Pomfret (cleaned & slit) पापलेट
For Spice Water
¼ cup Water, पानी
½ tsp Turmeric powder, हल्दी पाउडर
1 tsp Degi red chilli powder, देगी लाल मिर्च पाउडर
1 tsp Coriander powder, धनिया पाउडर
For Onion Tomato Masala
1 ½ tbsp Coconut oil, नारियल का तेल
½ inch Ginger, chopped, अदरक
2-3 Garlic cloves, chopped, लहसुन
1 Green chilli (less spicy) chopped, हरी मिर्च
2 sprig Curry leaves, कड़ी पत्ता
⅓ cup Shallots, slice, छोटे प्याज
2 medium Onion, chopped, प्याज
1 medium size Tomato, chopped, टमाटर
Salt to taste, नमक स्वादअनुसार
Prepared Spice Water
1 sprig Curry leaves, कड़ी पत्ता
For Assembling
Seared Fish, मछली
Prepared Onion Tomato Masala, तैयार किया हुआ प्याज टमाटर का मसाला
Other Ingredients
Banana leaf, केले का पत्ता
For Garnish
Fried Cashew Nut, तले हुए काजू
Coriander sprig, धनिया पत्ता
Onion, rings, प्याज
Green chilli, हरी मिर्च
Lemon, slice, नींबू
Process
For Marination
In a bowl, add lemon juice, ginger garlic paste, salt to taste, degi red chilli powder, turmeric powder, oil and mix well.
Marinate the fish for 10 minutes and set aside.
Or you can use an asahi kasei zipper bag and keep it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
For Spice Water
In a bowl, add water, turmeric powder, degi red chilli powder, coriander powder and mix well. Keep aside for further use.
For Onion Tomato Masala
In a shallow pan, add coconut oil once the oil is hot, add ginger, garlic, green chilli, curry leaves, onions and saute until translucent.
Add tomato, salt to taste and saute for 2-4 minutes.
Add spice water, curry leaves and mix well.
Once the masala is cooked, transfer it into a tray and keep aside for further use.
For cooking Fish
In the same pan, apply the asahi kasei frying pan foil and seared the marinated fish from both the sides for a few minutes.
Keep aside on a plate.
Run the banana leaf on fire for 2-3 seconds. The leaf would have become soft.
Take a big piece of wilted banana leaf and add in two tablespoons of the prepared masala in the center. Add a piece of seared fish and cover the fish with masala.
Fold the banana leaf to make a small pocket.
Place the prepared pocket on the same pan and cook for 5 minutes on a low flame, seam side down first.
Sprinkle little water and cook from both the sides.
Remove from heat and garnish it with fried cashew nut, coriander sprig, onion rings, lemon wedge and serve hot

Im a kératite and i hardly see any north indian chef cooking fish the exact same way like our grandparents used to make.. this is amazing
This is amazing, you showed exactly like how a malayalee would prepare meen pollichathu ! I am a Bengali and a tamilian brought up in Kerala and hence introduced to diverse cuisines growing up . Every time you show recipes from different parts of India I am amazed as to how you don't dilute the originality of the dish from where it belongs, that is the mark of a true chef!

Pyar Mangne se nahi milta Brar Sahab, Aap kaam hi aisa kar dete hain ki pyar aa jata hai. What a chummeshwari recipe. I love fish to the extent that even if its half cooked, would still eat it off with relish. Also being a bong and being Gifted with four awesome cooks in my life, my grandmother, my mom, my sis and my wife, all of them can cook Iliish machher paturi, machher jhaal, poshto iliish, doi iliish, chingri machher malai kari aboslutely fabulously. So when I saw the topic I was immediately drawn towards it because I had the good fortune to taste pomfret fry in an Indian restaurant in Dubai, place close to YMCA hostel. The taste of the same made me eat there for all the 9 days I was in Dubai.

I was married to a malayali guy and rather than this i had literally learnt to make all the varieties of Kerala style foods. Because I feel kerala foods are wholesome and very very nutritious for health. That's the reason I had practiced myself with everyday kerala style dish i know it's tough to cutting and chopping and cooking rather then Bengali foods(as I'm Bengali) but yes I do fail several times to meet my destination of perfect kerala cuisine foods but I'm maybe lucky and it's all by god grace that my mallu husband basically eats everything with a love and affection whether sometimes it's bad or it's good.😅
i have tasted this recipe when visited to kerala 3 years back, its very delicious.
