Unnecessary purchasing ? Regretting PHYSICAL MEDIA limited edition pick up

  • I got suckered into buying a limited edition I didn’t really need.
    This Blu ray or the 4k edition had just come out, I got carried away and ordered it. But I consider, was there other ways I could have achieved the same result at a fraction of the price ?!
    Do you get carried away with ordering ? Do you use digital / digital rentals as an alternative ?

    I’ve dialed back on my purchases. For vast majority of them I can wait for a sale. My backlog is so huge that I’m in no rush. I barely look at the extra goodies like lobby cards.
    A good thing about the limited editions is that if you decide to sell them you can make a little money once they go out of print.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, a lot of the limited editions certainly do hold their value well.
      I do like the on disc extras (lobby cards not so much) but o find at times I struggle to just view the movie, let alone the extra features. I’m waiting out on far more things than I used to… but I feel better for it… and I feel better for selling chunks of the collection. The space has given me a little clarity of mind.

    You were lucky to even find it on a steaming platform to be honest.. I tried to go digital a couple of years ago and 99% of the time the film I fancied watching wasn't on them which is why since the start of this year I've gone back to collecting physical media again 😎👍

    If digital providers actually allowed us to download the movies and TV shows, instead of restricting us to streaming it from their servers every time we want to watch it, I'd probably actually pay for digital copies of a lot of different movies and TV series. Then I can watch it anywhere I want on any device I want. It would also also mean I'm actually buying a copy of the media, as opposed to just having an indefinite license to stream it.
    I mostly watch TV series on my tablet, at work, so streaming services are useless to me for that purpose.
    As it is, I have to rely on trying to find those movies and TV shows on discs, but that's becoming nearly impossible, here in Australia.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  2 месяца назад

      I can download the iTunes purchases to my iPad. But, it’s still just the licence at the end of the day so ‘could’ be removed at any point.
      I’m sure over time they have to come up with something with this. So many already use servers and Plex to stream from a server.
      I don’t mind a digital purchase like this one when it’s comparable to what I used to pay for a rental. I was so used to paying between £3 and £5 for a rental to have the content for that limited night or two. Why not treat digital in a similar way when the price is comparable ?!

    Good points. I buy my movies from Target or Walmart mostly, but I don’t open them basically until my return window expires. If I see better deals later on or hear bad reviews I’ll return them for no loss on money. But I gotta preorder just in case prices go up later or by chance it sells out and put on eBay for double the price.

    It does make me laugh when I spend hard earned money on a physical release, knowing I can stream the same movie for free just using my remote 😂 it's madness really.
    I agree with a point you made too, if a new release comes out that you think you want, watch it for cheap first and sometimes that will quench your thirst for the film and you won't be so eager to rush out and buy it.
    I did that with Narc, I badly wanted the limited edition set but instead I watched my 50p DVD and now I feel satisfied without spending 50 bucks.

      @PhillwithadoubleL  2 месяца назад

      I very nearly went for the Narc set too. I’ve held off on that one though.
      Definitely need some perspective with some of the titles. The rewatch of a previous version before making that decision can be a good way to go. Sometimes the memory of a movie is kinder than the reality on a rewatch.
      Of course other times movies can get better over time when age and perspective come into play we often view these things with different eyes. Carrie was one for me. Wasn’t keen when I was younger and watched it. Now, it’s one of my faves

    I fell into this trap with the hype around the RoboCop release by Arrow Video. The movie looks great, but all the pointless crap that comes in the box set with it that gives them a silly excuse to jack up the price is stuff that I looked at one time and have yet to do so again. Unless it's one of my absolute favorite films of all time, I will never fall into that trap again.

      The hype sways me a lot. Seeing the excitement for a title it makes me want it even more. Some of the limited editions are great for the right movie… it’s just all those ‘ok’ movies that I just don’t need to spend the extra for the limited edition when a standard edition will do.
      I love that Second Sight have the option of a standard version release alongside the limited.

If I could have held off and had some patience, I’ve no doubt over time it would become a movie I could pick up cheaper than that digital purchase. It’s just the needing to have something straight away urge.

  • @nickrobinson436
    @nickrobinson436 2 месяца назад +1

    Yeah, it's tough to hold back sometimes, but I recently had to do a re-evaluation of my collecting habits as well. When upgrading to 4Ks, I started buying way too many movies that I just "liked" instead of "loved", simply because I think 4K is the end of the road for physical.
    Perfect example for one I recently sold was Backdraft. I remember watching it a bunch of times on cable when I was a kid, and so I had an impulse to buy it when it became available on 4K. It sat on my shelf for years before I actually got around to it. And when it was over... yeah, I'm glad I watched it one last time, but it wasn't something I had to own. And I definitely didn't need the damn steelbook.
    So yeah, physical is still very important, but what I feel I want my final collection to look like is maybe a few hundred of my absolute favorites that I know I'll never get tired of watching. The ones that REALLY mean something to me. I just had to stop myself from becoming a hoarder that would end up with thousands of movies that I wouldn't have time to re-watch if I had three lifetimes.

      Taking the number of titles down. I don’t need the 1000+ numbers.
      Amazing when you start going your shelves in a little more detail, just how many titles you don’t feel any connection with or a desire to go back to.
      When I look at the titles I often consider. If I didn’t own it… would I buy it for the collection. It’s shocking the amount I wouldn’t.

    I hate to say this to you but having watched numerous videos from you now (and seeing you continually regret purchases), it seems like you should consider switching to digital. You never mention enjoying the limited edition releases for their bonus features or collectables, nor do you ever mention preferring them for their superior encoding - higher bit-rates or lossless audio - these things never get mentioned by you... ever. You basically always say you just felt like watching a movie and then regretted buying it.
    Even though it's fine for you to still collect your favorite movies, the biggest physical media supporters buy them for different reasons than you - we love the superior video/audio presentations, the collectables, and bonus features, etc.
    If you don't value the differences between physical media and digital copies then why not save a few dollars or something? (This is advice for you because you continue to delve down a rabbit hole of "purchase regrets").
    I, on the other hand, will cherish my collection.

      I never really talk about the encoding (but rates and lossless audio) because, there are good solid RUclipsrs out there who already cover this… and very well. I just don’t have enough knowledge around these areas to give a solid opinion on it.
      I’ve had a buying addiction of sorts. My collection went way beyond what it should have. Talking about things helps me consider my habits and perhaps think about some things a little differently. It’s not that I dislike physical media. I dislike my impulses at times when it comes to collecting for the wrong reasons.
      I will be talking about the things I love with the physical / boutique labels and limited editions along the journey or course. At the moment though I just wanted to approach things from a different angle, to promote discussion, to be a little different from other RUclipsrs and to hold myself accountable with my habits.

      I have a boxed set of all the Tremors movies. I'd seen a couple before, but now I've watched the first four, so far. Given the price I paid (about 40% off), I think it was worth it for about ten hours of entertainment. 🙂
