I get a kick out of how it all centers around what WE will or can do about the decision to reopen the pass, and I guess that's because WE closed it. But in the end, nature had the final say so, no permits, no meetings, no lawsuits!

I have an Army Corp of Engineers map showing a very well drawn 'Little Sarasota Pass' (at some point renamed 'Blind Pass') that entered from the Gulf of Mexico at the Sanderling Cabanas, traveled eastward a short distance and then turned a 90 degree turn to the south and ran the rest of the length of Siesta Key, exiting into the Lower Sarasota Bay in a sort of Delta Fingerling arrangement, down by Turtle Beach. There are no records as to how long that original pass was in play, but I would guess a very long time. There are reefs out on the Gulf side that used to channel the current right into Little Sarasota Pass, probably intensifying the flow of water in a venturi effect. To my way of thinking, the problems with this pass began 100 years ago (give of take) when a couple of big events took place. One was the Hurricane cutting through the surge created Midnight Pass, and the second was the wash over area of the original Little Sarasota Pass, effectively blocking any flow of water. The correct thing to have done would have been to have left everything alone and let mother nature eventually reclaim her Little Sarasota Pass, or even better, would have been to give Mother Nature a hand, and to have dug out the washed over area reestablishing the original pass. The original pass was all set up to function basically perfectly. Eventually, not only was the washed over area built upon, forever sealing its fate, but the entrance to Little Sarasota Pass was blocked by huge boulders (I think they put in a underground pipe to feed a much smaller amount of Gulf Water into now what had become 'Heron Lagoon', or the northern remnants of Little Sarasota Pass. Little Sarasota Pass was an eminently more sustainable Pass, whereas Midnight Pass was not. The 'infrastructure' just was not there for long term sustainability of the Hurricane produced Midnight Pass.
At this point, since our interference in these natural matters, has brought upon us this conundrum, I personally feel that the right thing to do is dredge and jetty a new pass. This goes against my beliefs in meddling with Mother Nature, but there don't seem to be any options to reestablish the original Little Sarasota Pass, so an artificially created Pass seems to be the proper and viable solution. It certainly would have to be jettied, much like the Pass down in Venice. Lower Sarasota Bay ultimately would benefit from better flushing, once a new biosphere developed after all dredging was over. When one considers the additional contaminants that are washed into the bays after 50 years of increased population and development, it seems even more imperative to facilitate as much water exchange as possible.

Sarasota is a synonym for corruption. ESPECIALLY regarding development issues.
