Is it really worth fixing a 9-year-old laptop? I'm going to retire my 10-year-old laptop due to worn out parts and it's inefficiency.
I was expecting you to replace the GPU lol xD
I actually expected he to do do too.
Same
Same here lol
I thought he was going to reball the GPU, in a 15 minute video, lol. Nah that'd be super human.
I did a fair few xbox 360 ones as well as old iMac ones, and it's serious business (not just a heat gun btw)
It's impossible without an automated machine
Louis Rossman would be disappointed at the lack of flux during soldering
Hugh really should have added some decent flux when attaching the CMIZapper PCB. I'd also advise him to get in some soldering practice on a scrap PCB and to at least use a magnifier and preferably a stereo microscope for any very fine soldering. That aside I enjoy his videos.
@@SlartiMarvinbartfast this is big IC and if you have good eyes microscope is definitely not needed but a flux is a must!
@@volkhen0 If Hugh ever tried to do any finer soldering then a stereo microscope would be essential, even with a chip of the size shown in the video extra magnification can help.
But he would be pleased to see Jeffrey said the oven method doesnt work (home made reflowing)
@@SlartiMarvinbartfast do you really think he is not aware of what gear he does and doesnt need, did you even watch the whole video and listen to what he says ?...always armchair "non-experts" like you chirping up
Little advice on soldering: the solder contains flux which will flow the solder so it bonds to your surface perfectly. If you apply already-melted solder from the tip of your soldering iron, you'll make awful joints. The trick is: always melt the solder ON THE PADS. IF you cannot do that (camera in the way, small components etc) then buy some flux and squirt some on the pads before you do the job. In that case even the old solder from the tip should work - or will work better.
A finished, good soldering joint should end up being smooth and shiny.
Not telling you to show off, just genuine advice.
I wasn't aware of this chip BTW, it looks like a great idea.
I know this is an old post, but just here to agree. Soldering is really easy when you learn the trick is just to use a lot of good flux. Don't need to use some tiny tip (usually the smaller ones make the job harder, not enough thermal mass).
I dont really know what's happening, i just like watching you work and fix stuff.
Yup, same
u are NOT alone

That is awesome to hear 😃 congratulations
@@thomascobb5514 thanks 👍
You’re doing an amazing job by preventing devices to go in landfill. Great job Hugh, keep it up
Yeah better than Apple 😂😂
@Ellis The DJ They won't do it due to their policies.
For him roomfill 😂
Left shift key is a special key like the power button / left ctrl / option.
Instead of being wired directly to the keyboard IC like other keys, it first goes to a series of AND logical Gates that checks if left shift/control/option are pressed. That's how the computer can tell if you are doing a SMC Reset when its off. Those AND gates can easily get broken
So basically you need to replace U5750/U5755 (the two IC you can find right in front of the keyboard connector in 12:17) or the nearby capacitors/resistors and the key will probably work again without needing to replace the entire keyboard.
This is gold! I have the same MBP as in the video, and replaced the whole keyboard but after 3 days the space bar got problem, it types on its own. So I had to put back my faulty stock keyboard with the Enter key not working. May I ask what can I do to fix one of them, could be the faulty Enter key or the Space bar just so I can use one of them. Thank you very much in advance!
I had a late 2011 MBP that had the same issue. I had it repaired by Apple right before the recall expired, and it broke again a year later. I ended up taking out the motherboard and heating the GPU with a heat gun to reconnect it to the motherboard. This worked for about 8 months before it unseated once again. Ended up getting a different laptop, but the entire process of fixing this laptop and replacing phone parts multiple times was a huge learning experience for me. Had I known there was a solderable piece that would stop the GPU from trying to start up, I might have tried it.
I got one with a broken GPU for cheap, and a donor to transplant the entire motherboard.
Since I didn't really care much about its looks, I simply drilled holes around the fans in the bottom case, which reduced temps by 15 degrees c.
So far, 6 years on, and it works fine. I did have to replace the speakers and battery last year though.
@@dgurevich1 Hi, what do you mean by drilling holes around the fans? can you show me the pic please? and is it really working and can reduce the heat significantly?
@@deemka476 the bottom case is just a sheet of aluminum. So I used a hand drill to make 1mm holes 3mm apart around 2 circles where the fans are, and 4 2mm holes in the middle of each circle.
After that, raising up the computer also helps.
Hugh, I have had Imacs for years. I have to say that your style of teaching is terrific! I will NEVER take any of these machines apart, but watching YOU do it, is all kinds of educational. Thanks!
I did the exact same thing almost a year ago! Mine would boot into a screen with black and green lines and I reflowed the GPU and worked just fine.
Any idea how GPU got fried?
It overheats, and causes the GPU solder to crack since its lead-free.
@@hunterscooters5101 no it didn’t. The solder underneath the chip just cracked from the heat of the GPU. Not meaning it overheated but the solder couldn’t handle the heat as it was a lead-free solder.
It's a issue of the AMD GPUS not the solder AMD messed badly up on those years GPUS
@@JaceFunkyFace Ah I see, thanks for clarifying
You can disable the GPU through an EFI/NVRAM variable, rather than having to modify the logic board while also removing the AMD kexts entirely, the downside is any macOS update will wipe the NVRAM change and reload the kexts so you'd have to redo it, although the 2011 models won't be getting any other major macOS updates, so you can make sure you've got the very latest High Sierra version and then just do the EFI/NVRAM variable modification and leave it as an alternative if you don't want to solder. As you mentioned though, resetting PRAM will also re-enable the GPU, so this is very much the hardware solution, but the software solution can be easier for a lot of people if they happen to have a dead GPU.
how to ressset the gpu
Yup, this works pretty great without too much hassle.
I had 4 of the 17” 2011 anti glare models, each replacement ended up like the prior with a dead logic board due to the graphics. BTW, LOVE the nostalgia your videos provide.
that sounds like a thermal issue to me. Not enough cooling on the gpu. Looking at the cooling design I got a strong suspicion on why that is. Basically all the heat from the cpu gets transfered over the gpu.
It is really great to see you moving towards micro repair of boards.....😇
oh gods
I have this exact model, same issue!
Same, there are people on eBay who do a fix, I'm wondering if this is it.
@@ngrgdrpr Could be this little device itself, or one of a number of less ideal methods. From what I remember there are software-only ways to mostly disable the GPU, but it is not robust and you'll eventually be back where you started. There was a guy named dosdude1 that came up with the MUX bypass method, and removing the chip that enables the GPU, but that's a lot of work. I think he also made a little board device similar to this CMIzapper thing to reprogram the MUX chip same as this does, for a similar price, but he only sold a small batch, never released the code or anything.
@@W1ldTangent yeah I've started asking local computer shops if they can fix the issue. It's not my daily driver so I'm not too worried. Im hoping they will do what Hugh did in this video
@@ngrgdrpr Best of luck with that, but I don't think many shops that aren't at Louis Rossmann or Hugh's level would have the chops or the chip to pull that off. If you are willing to learn soldering, and have the 60 quid for the mod, I think I'd trust my own hands with that job. Otherwise you'll get some monkey trying to bake it in an oven, or just editing the PRAM and deleting the drivers and calling it a day until you reset it or the drivers magically reappear... you don't want that, get someone to do it right, even if it means doing it yourself. People thought the last of the 17" beasts were lost causes that would all die inevitably for 7 years until they first figured out how to bypass the MUX by removing it and using bodge wires and then to this where they reprogram the PRAM on the fly. Amazing work, and the very best you can get right now. I've been looking every now and then for cheap 2011 17 inchers with no major issues or wear besides the GPU issue, but I think the market has caught on that this can be almost completely restored sans GPU now.
@@W1ldTangent yeah I definitely want to talk to the shop and see what their plan is before taking it anywhere. This could be a good excuse to learn how to solder.
U should have used some flux when u soldered the modding chip to the rom ..
I screamed at the screen when i saw that lol
exactly
@Ellis The DJ There is, but usually it's not enough. Like in this case you can see the solder is sticking quite poorly to the surface and melts together with other pins.
@Ellis The DJ Oh man no worries, I was such a noob not long time ago. I was learning to solder and it took me some time to figure out how to use flux. Then I just hated myself cause all the soldering I was doing before could have been done so much better and easier by just using flux ;P

big job on this old Laptop... hope it keeps running fine for a while! I have a 2012 model which needed to be repaired in a shop for a faulty chip in the Graphics area...
Hugh, 1) never squirt liquid onto a laptop or screen. Always spray a cloth. 2) re: KB screws .. rotate them counter-clockwise until feeling the threads align. Do this with all screws and never cross thread again. When turning counter-clockwise you will feel a "click" which is the screw threads aligning with the laptop threads. 3) Now you can perhaps help me: I've never heard of a computer causing one key to not work. What do you think can cause it to happen? 4) when cleaning a screen, lay the laptop on the screen back, balance the lower case and then clean the screen. You won't stress hinges or frames. Great video. I learned from it.
To compensate for the lost dedicated GPU, you can use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter cable to attach an eGPU like an RX560 for example. There will be a performance hit due to it being TB1 instead of TB3 but it works and it's many times faster than the integrated Intel HD 3000.
Ever since I started watching your videos. I always wondered "How old is your old toothbrush?". 🤣
I did the oven GPU fix on a 2011 macbook pro, still works to this day
Was planning on selling it but i thought i'd test it first, still have it as a second laptop today, a year later.
Is the oven GPU fix what this guy did in the video? I have an SD drive now and it's working super fast except when I load google maps it slows down majorly and the Activity Monitor says Opera Helper (GPU) is taking up 90% of CPU. Macbook Pro 2011. The easiest way to remove something like that small resistor is to add a little fresh solder to it. the very small amounts of lead-free solder that are used on those boards make it very difficult to transfer the heat into the solder and to melt it. A tiny bit of fresh let it solder will make removal much easier.
I think this computer was water damaged because of all the corrosion build up on the board. This might be the cause of the shift key not to work? By the way I also have a youtube channel about repairing and making diy projects. Check it out!
How does it feel when you unscrewed 50 screws and screwed them back and the shift key is still not working :)
@@vitsirucka6385 I hate that feeling
@@vitsirucka6385 Happened to me when repairing a laptop
Because I forgot to plug in the fan.
@@AppleReviews But usually it is caused by liquid damage. This can also relate to when metal rusts in water.
When this macbooks extended repair service program was available I remember Apple simply would replace the motherboard with the same defective model of motherboard.
In 2015-2017 you could have this part replaced for free, and immediately upon receiving it back run the "Donut of death" GPU stress test and the GPU would immediately show signs of deficiency.
I did this during the extended repair period when 2011 MacBooks were no longer being produced.
Due to this issue, you could simply repeat the repair process 3 times. After the third time, the apples "Lemon" Rule applies and they must supply you with a new machine.
We received a 2013 15" Macbook Pro Retina with integrated Graphics for free as a result of this issue because there were no more 2011 models to be given out.
Damnn. Wish i new that. I got mine replaced for the same and just died months later, and their program expired 😪
First thing I always see on my notifications when I wake up every Sunday morning is Hugh, and watch right away 😌
Hugh, great video, but i have a tip, you can use lacker wire instead of the wire with pvc you used in the vid, if you bust open an old crt tv, on the board where the rf modulator is, you will find some kind of transfo's that look like a wheel, this wire is small yet sturdy, the lacker on this wire is thick, but when you solder it, the lacker of the wire will burn away leaving you with a sturdy copper wire perfect to jump from 1 connection to the next, i use this on several repair jobs and it works fine :)

Even though I live in Europe, I'm still hating whenever Hugh says centimeter instead of inch. Display dimensions should be inches everywhere tbh.
Yes, that was an annoyingly stupid and unnecessary conversion no one worldwide needed.
Why ?
@@dedelabinouze5110 Where do you encounter device screen sizes stated in the specifications in centimeters? Phones, TVs, Monitors, handheld measuring devices... it's all in inches, it's a round number and it's easy to compare.
As someone who has always lived in Australia, strangely I 100% agree. Television displays here used to be measured in centimetres, and in some circles they still are, but people are more regularly defining television display sizes in inches now. Considering almost all of our other measurements are metric, it's a little strange. But computer monitor sizes (and many other devices too) are all measured in inches-pretty much the world over.
In our country inches are really only used for measurements pertaining to displays (either physical size, like that 11-inch MacBook Air), or when measuring the PPI / DPI. It's a weird abnormality which it seems Hugh is trying to break, but I don't agree with it. Plus, that computer's official name is "17-inch MacBook Pro," no matter what language a Mac is set to, "Safari" is still called "Safari," and a 13-inch MacBook Pro is still called a 13-inch MacBook Pro (on the Japanese apple website, they write "13インチMacBook Pro"
