    i don’t think people understand how heavy this hits after a whole entire movie that is nothing but forrest delighting in life. this moment tells us that throughout it all, he was perfectly aware of why people treated him certain ways, why they spoke to him certain ways - and he had no problem with being treated that way, because he could handle it. but the moment he thought of his son having to face everything he did, he broke down - saw it as a problem. i will forever adore tom hanks for the nuance of this scene. it broke me like a welled-up dam.

      I have loved this movie my whole life and watched it countless times. But I never once put that together until I saw an interview where Zachary Levi said the same thing. I understood how he was worried about it all but not the whole aspect of him actually understanding the whole time what was going on. It completely changes the movie for me and makes it go from great to almost perfect!

    You know theres a lot about this movie that seems so hokey or exploitive, but there are also scenes like this that are just incredibly relatable. I think every parent can relate to this scene. The wonder of meeting your child, and the inescapable fear that just by virtue of them being your child you've somehow burdened them with all your inadequacies and baggage. That you want more than anything for them to live a life free of the pain and heartaches you'd had to suffer. And finally the huge swell of pride that comes from knowing they've exceeded you, they aren't broken the same as you, they will be ok.

      There IS a lot about this movie that is hokey and emotionally manipulative, but.... I remember walking out of the theatre as a much younger man, with my date who would one day be my wife-- who would one day be the mother of my children, who would one day be my ex-wife and a virtual stranger--and thinking that the movie was good, but was in no way deserving of the praise we'd heard from older people who had seen it. But now, nearly thirty years have passed, as have parents and friends and ex-lovers; nearly thirty years of life that never quite added up to what I had then simply assumed would be a wonderful success. And with the passing years, with the losses and missed opportunities that life hurls at each of us, the hokey moments in this movie seem far less hokey, and the emotionally manipulative scenes nonetheless punch a spike into the heart.

      Its still a movie. Not a documentary. Parts of it is to highlight the struggles of the times not related directly to Forrest. And they may exaggerate a bit sure. Some are just funny but untrue like Apple that he was part of it but true that it did take off. The smiley logo whatevs.
      I think a lot of people can identify something with themself in this movie regardless of how realistic it is. I think thats why people like it so much.

    Forrest Gump is by far the saddest movie I've ever seen. It painfully illustrates how extremely harsh life is for people that are found to be not good enough. The "Is he smart?" scene is such an intense conclusion of the film: it both shows how much the protagonist has suffered from his handicap, as well as his strong fear of condemning someone to a similar suffering. This is for sure one of the best movies ever made.

    He'd say things like "I don't want you to be like me."
    I had my problems. My stints in jail but I never served. I seen how what men see in war changes them.
    I try and lead an honest life. Not hurt no one or do anyone foul. My fathers wish was that I be good, better. Because of the regret he had. I remember him waking up crying his eyes out and not being able to recognize me at first. I dont blame Mama for leaving us. But I never left him until he made me go.

    I get the fear that Forrest has for his son, worrying that he might have to endure what he went through. It almost has a touch of internalized shame, and that is easy to understand.

    The thing that annoys me is that Forrest Gump himself was incredibly smart. He was a bit quirky and had his stumbling moments, may have appeared dumb and was told his entire life he was but dumb people simply don't achieve great things like what Forrest Gump achieved. His ideas weren't coincidental, all calculated.

      You cant catch AIDS from someone but you can catch HIV. The chances the Forrest caught it after having vaginal sex with Jenny once is astronomically low. She would have had be shedding the virus at the time with a massive viral load. Not only that, percentage wise it would probably be under 1% he got HIV and EVEN if he got HIV it would depend on the variant to how bad it would be. Maybe he would have it for 20-30 years without treatment and never develop AIDS. So your statement is entirely inaccurate and beyond stupid.

    Being smart is grossly overrated
    It just means you have the ability to perform a larger variety of tasks
    Does not necessarily mean you'll be happy
    Source: I'm surrounded by a lot of smart average and below average people
    ... and generally the smart ones are less happy and the brilliant ones are miserable (to be fair, I've only met 2 truly brilliant people, so could be skewed sample)

    • @Baalthazaq
      @Baalthazaq 2 года назад +1

      I wouldn't say it's over-rated, but it becomes a burden on a lot of different fronts.
      Think about it this way:
      A genie grants you a wish:
      You can make everyone on earth significantly dumber except you.
      You can make everyone on earth significantly smarter except you.
      One of those worlds makes you happier. Every interaction, whether it's retail staff, a call center, your car mechanic, your IT support guy, every government worker, every teacher, every student, is a little better for you.
      In the other, all of that is worse. Think about truly the dumbest person you know. Imagine if everyone was replaced with them. Imagine having to explain, everything, always, to everyone, all the time. Imagine an infinite number of blank faces staring at you while you try to just live in a society.
      Having to slow down everything you do always so others can keep up. Having to use smaller words, say them slow, wait for people to catch up. All the time, every sentence, all the time, every interaction.
      It's miserable.
      It's not that it's overrated. It's that it's not rated for selfishness. Your smartness helps others more than it helps you.

    Jenny really didn’t deserve Forrest let’s be real, he chased her for so long and all she ever did was leave and when she stayed she was dying just to say that and leave Forrest with a kid and for all we know maybe isn’t even his and just filled his head with false accusations so he could take care of a kid that maybe his real dad doesn’t want. But even if that kid is actually Forrest’s it really still would not change my opinion on her in this movie.

      @PaulBadman981 2 года назад +8

      That was my opinion of Jenny for the longest time as well, but I realize now that her life was something that no one should have had to go through. Being sexually abused as a child would make our lives that much harder; she didn't run away from Forrest because she didn’t love him, but because she felt that she was not worthy. You can see how she views herself throughout her life when she is drifting between groups of people and suffering through more and more abuse. Her father had skewed her view of men and allowed his presence to loom over her wherever she went. Every time she was with Forrest, though, she was happy and able to talk with someone without having to worry about anything else. She kept running because she viewed Forrest as someone who deserved a woman that wasn’t “bad” like herself. Once she had Forrest Jr, she realized what she needed and that running from it was causing her even more pain. It’s a bittersweet ending, but that’s the beauty of Forrest Gump and life as a whole. Not all of us can have happy endings, but that does not mean we have to die with a heavy heart or regrets. Jenny is a flawed being, but not a bad character; she was shown kindness by Forrest and did not feel deserving of any of it
