You know a lot get's made about how "dumb" Forest Gump was, and as a kid I used to think that as well. As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate just how wise of a character he was. How many times we over think something and how that stops us from doing something. Here for example Forest didn't think about how he could start a Shrimping company, how to make it work, what could go wrong, etc etc he just did it and rolled with things as it came. He ran just for the hell of it and was able to navigate coast to coast via the road system in the US. He immediately understood that in the military he needed to do what he was told and quickly adapted everything he needed to know. He wasn't smart by how we would traditionally judge someone as intelligent, but he definatly possesses his own wisdom that could be envied.

Such a beautiful scene, and the message is truly inspiring. The storm represents Lt. Dan confronting his demons and all the angry and misery that is in his life. Unlike in previous scenes, he is not trying to hide from his troubles with alcohol or women; he is facing them head on and telling them that they can either kill him or leave him, but, either way, he will not let them torment him anymore. Lt. Dan represents duty Jenny represents America's lust for materialistic things(she also represents the victim of ever changing society) Bubba represents a friend Forrest represents innocence
i object to reducing each character down to a particular virtue. I think the writer of Forrest Gump would also have objected. Each of them is more than the corporeal form of a single virtue. If it were that simple, it wouldn't move you like it does. They are humans and all of them have their human imperfections. Even Forrest.
How to when my problems are from p t s d and tourette episodes and multiple Sclerosis and lead poisoning and I'm sorry and yes I am a disabled woman. Idk what to do. I cry for everyone else.
Through this sentence "I've never thanked you for saving my life," the lieutenant doesn't explicitly thank Forrest because it's the lieutenant's character; he would never admit such a thing to anyone. However, the sentence is expressed with a context and manner that implicitly conveys his thank to Forrest.
Lt. Dan is a majorily relatable character for me. Im not nor have I been a druggie or a cripple, but, the scene at the new years party where he just kinda looks not even part of the room as everyone is celebrating the new year was how i was from 13-16 years old, my father was emotionally abusive and i had learned some hard truths and was not able to express my emotions in a healthy way:i played football because it tested my physical might and was violent, same with lifting weights, but i still had eating disorder issues. However, my dad finally got put in a nursing home, and i was already starting to be able to live oblivious to his existence because i had my license and was working, but, by the grace of the universe, he finally realized he was causing too much emotional damage to himself and others so he decided it was time for qualified professionals to take care of him and his ailments. That is when i began to heal, a lot. I learned a lot about myself through thinking about my emotions/reactions to certain things, and, as lietuenant dan did, i made my peace. They always talk about the pursuit of happiness or whatever but i believe that the ultimate happiness is peace, and it is what we should seek out.
I was nine years old when my mom and dad took me to see this movie and it brought me to tears then and now I’ve aged and seen it several times this is still one of the greatest movies of my lifetime. And think it lost best pitcher to pulp fiction, Although Tom Hanks dead win best actor rightfully deserved
@@garmenlin5990 I understood. That's even more fuel to the stake of clean vs. hard living. Jenny partied her ass off and lived hard, paying for it with premature aging and ultimately her life due to her lifestyle choices. Forest never did any of that. I remember when this movie came out. The debate of a more "liberal" lifestyle (Jenny) vs. the simpleton conservative lifestyle (Forest) and the fruits and labors that come from each was much talked about back in '94.
@@siennamelake4776 First *see the movie* . It wasn't an Academy award winner on accident. Regarding Jenny, every kind of abuse you can think of in her house growing up. She "escaped" into the cities and communes of the 70's, hopping from one abusive relationship to another, tons of drugs, etc. It wasn't util she came home, cleaned up, ultimately became a mom, that things started turning north. Even then, it seems God had one more trial in store for her. Like I said, see the movie. It's two hours of your life you won't regret burning. It wasn't by accident the film was nominated for 13 academy awards, winning six of them including best-picture, best director for Zemeckis, best-actor by Hanks, etc.. That's a tall order, especially when you consider the films/actors pitted against it (Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption among them). That year was kind of a pisser for me, as I couldn't believe Legends of the Fall wasn't at least nominated for Best Picture. I still think Shawshank should have one it, but to each their own.
One of the best movies ever made, I love the woman's reaction when he shows her the cover of Fortune. If only he had showed the man who just walked away too
You can't say Lt. Dan wasn't a man of his word. He said he was going to be Forrest's first mate and he showed up. He said the boat wouldn't sink and it didn't
Lately I been reading up on stories of Vietnam vets healing from their traumas and guilt, many even traveling to Vietnam finding the pieces of themselves they left behind, getting the attention they deserved after being forced into a war that wasn't even theirs to fight only to be neglected afterwards and left to fend for themselves, many living exactly as Lt Dan is depicted And I don't know why but lately those stories have just been getting to me, including this otherwise fictional account, they can't go back to who they were before but they can still find a bright future for themselves and find healing and forgiveness
It's poetic that Lt. Dan brings up never thanking Forrest for saving his life and still doesn't thank him. That's one different way to say, he was fine with dying in Vietnam, but he is also fine with living a second life
Know this. what no one is talking about is the smile at 3:13 you can tell is from the heart not once did he smile like that in the movie he was looking at forest like a brother.
I watched this movie with my Father when it came out in 1994. 1st time seeing Gary Sinise in a movie. Thought his legs really were amputated. After watching the Oscar's realized that it was a visual effect.(Won) Sadly my Dad isn't here anymore. I'll never forget watching this fantastic movie with my fantastic Dad.
It's funny because I work for multi-millionaire every week during the spring to fall cutting his grass at his farm. He is a retired electrician that did very well for himself with his own business, he always did big jobs and he invested his earnings well. I do it as a side job. I met him while shooting trap at my local sportsman's club, and we got to know each other very well. We became like family. He saw something in me most people don't when we'd talk and shoot and I was helping the club out for free and being treated bad but I took it in stride.
True story. We were in Mazatlán at a nice resort. I was deep sea fishing one day but my wife stayed back to do arts and crafts for the day. True story. Sally field came down to paint some clay parrots or other objects that they had available. She sat next to my Michelle and Michelle didn't recognize her and they chatted up the entire afternoon as the other people there watched on. After Sally left everyone bombarded my Michelle asking about her talking and working next to her. Michelle had no idea. This was 8 months before Forrest Gump. True.
This is one of the few movies ever made where everybody has strong character development and multiple character arcs with powerful resolutions that are beyond relatable. Every character is relatable, and everyone knows someone like them in real life, or we can recognize ourselves in any of them. Pure Magic.
Literally Lt. Dan and the Drill Sergeant (other than his mom) cared about Forrest more than Jenny did. And I mean this unironically. Yes, she was sexually abused as a child, and I felt sorry for her. But that doesn’t excuse her from treating Forrest like a toy, using him then ghosting moments after again and again. Don’t even get me started about her taking advantage of Forrest’s feelings and sleeping with him, only to ditch him…AGAIN. She’s lucky that Forrest was so pure.
The lady sitting next to Forrest on that bench looks a lot and reminds me of my Grandma Fleming. She was an incredible woman and it was an honor to know her. I really miss her.
I always thought Lt.Dan was trying to commit suicide, but I just realized he effectively baptized himself and became born again. He's an unnecessarily complex and powerful character to the point where you can make a film about his life alone and I would be just as fascinating as Forest Gump.

How so?
@@juanmanuelpenaloza9264 Up to that point, we listen to these stories--and like the gentleman that walked away, we just believe that he's telling these stories because he doesn't even really know any better. Then after the man walked away, the older woman sits next to him and says that she enjoys the stories. Then Forrest produces the magazine with him on the cover. The woman then realizes that these aren't just stories, anymore. These are things that actually happened to him.
@@or10nsharkfin But how is that subverting expectations? We know these things happened to him. Nothing was subverted
@@_Cato_ Idk I guess if the audience had been doubting Forrest the whole time as well/were expecting a plot twist
@@_Cato_ we as the audience aren't doubting him, but the people on the bench don't believe him. The guy even says he's heard some whoppers and laughs at the fact this simpler man is claiming to be the founder of a massive well-known corporation (the guy even says you're the Bubba-Gump Shrimp corporation and laughs walking away). Wouldn't you be shocked to find the guy you were sitting with on a bus stop bench was the founder of RUclips or something?
Forrest is so humble he doesn't even think to prove it. He asks the lady if she wants to see Lt. Dan - just continuing his story. When he uses Fortune magazine to show her simply what Dan looks like, she's shocked because everything he said was true.
Shows how humble Forrest is. Even when someone is making fun of him, and he can easily prove it, he's too humble/simple to care. "Are you stupid or something?"
He wasn't smart by how we would traditionally judge someone as intelligent, but he definatly possesses his own wisdom that could be envied.
well wisdom and intelligence are not the same thing.

Forrest was Dumb? Dont make me laugh.
It sucks bubba didn’t make it to see this but at least Forrest is keeping his dream and everything alive and giving bubba’s family his share. What a great movie.
I like to think Bubba was acting as a guardian angel over the boat during the storm, protecting and always cherishing something he loved, shrimping.
I love how Forrest gave Bubba’s mama Bubba’s shares of the business. Don’t know how much it was but judging from how she fainted, I’ll say several hundred million dollars.
Forrest definitely did right.
Yeah, better for the plot, but sad for the story. They made a fine duo. Would've been hilarious seeing Bubba and Gumpa with Dan on the boat.
@@a.b.sproductionsllc I guess no matter the amount seeing that they bought apple shares at the end implies that they were worth a lot, I think he probably gave her half or a third if Dan had a part.

“Well, that’s good, one less thing.”
This is further supported calm and success after the storm. He has triumphed and rid himself of his demons. Lt. Dan jumping into the water represents his baptism - his rebirth, the start of his new life.
Amen! Brilliant summation & analysis. Very much like a baptism.
You perfectly described it indeed!!!I love it!!!!!
Wow. Amen!
And that he doesn't need legs where he is at. He is not a cripple in the ocean.
Well now, that's about the best interpretation of that scene I've ever heard. Thank you for putting it into words.
0:41 Florida man during Hurricane Milton
Lt. Dan is one of the greatest characters in movie history. Great development.
That woman is the only person in Forrest's life who owed him nothing yet treated him with the decency he deserved his whole life.
Gary Sinise portraying Lt. Dan is the all time best supporting character ever.
"I never thanked you for saving my life." Gets me every time.
Irony is he still never thanked him, just pointed out he never did.
It's as good as he can do. Accept the gesture.
Me too. 😪
The best scene of the movie is when lieutenant dan realizes how blessed he is to be alive.
"Bubba-Gump Shrimp. It's a household name" the way he talks is just so funny!
Tom said he mimicked Michael Conner Humphreys who played the young Forrest.
0:15 has anyone noticed that storm sounded like the T-Rex from Jurassic park lol
Get the heck out of here you're right!
Yep. Guess they like Jurassic Park so much.
last time I bumped into T-Rex he stole my sandwich...!
Lt. Dan jumping in the ocean and swimming are timelines quite far apart.
Incredible cinematography.
Now no one forget jenny was the true villain of this movie.
It’s hard not to see Jenny as a victim. She was a very damaged person.
This movie was also about people like Jenny who were damaged because of being traumatized in their childhood but still deserve to be loved like how Forest loved her
@@nikhilkesavadas9318 They kinda were made for each other, a half and a half. One with a disability but blessed by God with luck. One is normal but her luck is completely fucked by God.
@@FaczutMon Jenny literally turn away Gump's help several times and went of her own will away. She had an out the entire time but didn't take it, but yeah Jenny is a "victim", she got abused as a child sure but she turnt away Gump's help every time until she was already terminally doomed. "Completely fucked by God" is a fun way for saying she was a fucking idiot and got herself killed, but sure... a perfect pair
@@legoeasycompany Who in the right mind would want to be with Forrest Gump at first? He's a retard and not even the best one. Pure love is not gonna make up for it. Especially when you are young and there's so many oppurtunity. She's tried to gain a reliable love but her luck is fucked every time. Also, she does not demand any penny from Forrest so no one has a right to says anything about her.
Forrest gets his fortune out of his misfortunes. Whenever the world fuck him, destiny rewards him back with tons of goods. While Jenny is the opposite. If they were together in the first place, Jenny would protect Forrest from all that misfortune thus causing him to lose a chance to gain fortunes. That's why they are perfect. They even each other out. The best outcome of this I can think of is Forrest's work as a Janitor, Jenny as a waitrest.
As for the canon storyline, they did not together at first. God favors Forrest while Jenny doesn't. Forrest got the luxury life but his retardness won't allow him to enjoy or truly understand the meaning of it. Jenny can feel all but all she feels is empty. In the end, Forrest got a son whom he can feel loved by others than Jenny. And Jenny, die but knowing that someone truly loves her, and her son exists. And her son's life would be ensured with happiness thanks to Forrest. Their destiny even out with their son.
No matter in what circumstances, they would always be a perfect pair, a happy ending for them. Just not the kind of Micky Mouse ending, or Teenager love story ending where everyone kisses and fuck with a smile in the end so lots of people blame Jenny. Cause she's not the main character.
Oh my... this movie gets me every time! So beautiful when LD swims toward the horizon, making his peace with god. Alan Silvestri´s music does the rest. Brilliant movie and epic score! This movie never gets old.

"It's funny Lt. Dan said that cos right then, God showed up."
The attitude of Forrest Gump.. Seeing good in all.. And the result? He became a millionaire.. Forrest Gump wasn't just a movie but a life lesson..
Lt. Dan represents duty
Jenny represents America's lust for materialistic things(she also represents the victim of ever changing society)
Bubba represents a friend
Forrest represents innocence
i object to reducing each character down to a particular virtue. I think the writer of Forrest Gump would also have objected. Each of them is more than the corporeal form of a single virtue. If it were that simple, it wouldn't move you like it does. They are humans and all of them have their human imperfections. Even Forrest.

I love how all of Forrest's photos always has him with his eyes closed. Just adds a bit of humor to all of it.
Through this sentence "I've never thanked you for saving my life," the lieutenant doesn't explicitly thank Forrest because it's the lieutenant's character; he would never admit such a thing to anyone. However, the sentence is expressed with a context and manner that implicitly conveys his thank to Forrest.
The most sincere 'Thank You" ever.
Forest gump is one of the best motion pictures ever made

Sometimes, the acknowledgement and awareness of someone helping them is more important than the saying of thank you or sorry.
He maybe never thanks Forrest in the end, but kept remind himself all the while that he owe him one. To me that's valued thousand of 'thank you'.

Hyper-clean living, and no stress (and oh, yeah, it's Hollywood ffs).
@@Craig-ib7gk No I mean Jenny looked like she aged compared to Forrest.
@@Craig-ib7gk haven’t watched the movie but wasn’t she in like loads of abusive relationships or did she just sleep around what ?

You can't say Lt. Dan wasn't a man of his word. He said he was going to be Forrest's first mate and he showed up. He said the boat wouldn't sink and it didn't
Forrest Gump and Lt. Dan is one of the great friendships in film history.
Lt. Dan isn’t really thanking him for saving his life in Vietnam. He’s thanking him for giving his life back to him in Louisiana.
Lately I been reading up on stories of Vietnam vets healing from their traumas and guilt, many even traveling to Vietnam finding the pieces of themselves they left behind, getting the attention they deserved after being forced into a war that wasn't even theirs to fight only to be neglected afterwards and left to fend for themselves, many living exactly as Lt Dan is depicted
And I don't know why but lately those stories have just been getting to me, including this otherwise fictional account, they can't go back to who they were before but they can still find a bright future for themselves and find healing and forgiveness
Lieutenant Dans crazed laugh always gets me!😂
It's poetic that Lt. Dan brings up never thanking Forrest for saving his life and still doesn't thank him. That's one different way to say, he was fine with dying in Vietnam, but he is also fine with living a second life
They don't make movies like this anymore.

True.
The will power Dan got is inspiring.
This is reminiscent of The Truman Show where Jim Carey says, "is that the best you can do? You're gonna have to kill me!"
Every time I feel like watching a movie and don’t know what to watch, I always think of Forest Gump! I never get tire of watching it!
If you like this movie you should watch, "Big Fish."
