There wasn’t a golfer who wasn’t helped in some way by this episode. Questions were on point, y’all let Lou go when he needed to and made everything relative. This was almost an hour long and it felt like 15 minutes…I want more!
Don’t listen to that podcast if you can’t leave your ego at the door…. But if you actually want to learn something, then go ahead. I’m a big fan. They have really good guests on there too and I like the older episodes a lot when Scott Fawcett was still on there. One of the best ones is with Sasho Mackenzie who is just a total genius.
Probably the best MyGolfSpy video ever; any and every golfer should benefit from this. I know I did. We need him on again, I know it was almost an hour long but it felt like a 15 min show. I learned so much and discovered those elusive questions you don't even know to ask. Chris and Tony, you did a superb job, and Lou you were amazing.
Thank you for the bit about the gapping at the short end of the bag. This is why I cannot understand why they do the opposite for "game improvement." Most game improvement sets have 2-3 degree differences on low loft irons and bigger and bigger gaps 5-6 degrees in the high loft irons.
Absolutely brilliant, reinforced some of my own feelings on gapping and also driver strategy. Would love to hear more insight into different data sets especially around short game and putting.
A priceless discussion. "Right Brain" and "Left Brain" topics in one chat. Thank you. We have an abundance of wildlife and flora at our golf course and I usually make time to pay attention to it. I found a couple of species of native bees hanging around the tees a couple of times. I should see if having those moments correlate with my score. (strictly, negative because a lower score is better) I have followed Lou for some months on twitter. I recently went with the Arccos Caddy Link and the stats are great. Reading Lou's tweets and listening to him talk, brings those numbers to life.
God, I love Lou. To his comment on tees - my favorite way of determining length: Average the length of the par 3s. Whatever average is your 7 iron, play that.
Great stuff. As an 18 hcp player - I only carry around 8 or 9 clubs, no issue with gapping. Only club I haven't settled on yet is driver, still working towards it. 5wd, 7wd, 4,6,8,PW, SW, P
If you learn to hit a knockdown driver, you can take out the 5w for tee shots. I would recommend trying every head, every shaft, every grip and every golf ball until you pure at least 3 or 4 drives a round. Golf is a process. Enjoy.
Great show! Tony describes his 7-wood like I do my 4-hybrid. It’s been my 190-195yd club for years and stupid easy to hit. I got a 3 hybrid as well but for whatever reason not as consistent 🤷🏽♂️
The only situation I think needed more nuance is the idea that all amateurs need to hit more club. I am a plus handicap and I LOVE coming up short! Often times, the trouble is long, and hitting it long is usually a way to get yourself short sided. I think bad players should hit more club, but good players with good distance control should error on coming up short more times than not.
I read an article years ago about what pro athletes are thinking about when they play their sport. I want to say it was a News Week article. Anyway, they picked golf as it was the most stationary sport so all the electronics could be hooked up. They first showed the screen of what an amateur was thinking during the golf swing and the screen was lit up like a Christmas tree. They plugged in a pro and the screen went blank. It seems pros have the ability to simply flip a switch and turn the brain off. My opinion is that any professional athlete is a freak of nature. Maybe this is one of their super powers.
I would love it if we could submit questions to Lou you guys pick out a handful and have him back. Lou is right next to Tiger as a person of interest. When he talks I listen
Was there any mention of decade golf and Scott fawcet? Now that Lou is with arccos I wonder if they will come up with their own system for their recommendations?
I'd love to see some analysis on this "High Handicap Player" to see if there's any correlation to a specific are of the game which makes one a High Handicap. For instance, off the tee is my worst area, while my iron play isn't great but isn't terrible, but my short game (100 yds and in especially around the green) really saves me. I play at a 12-15 depending on if it's a new course or not. I see so many people say this club or that club or ball, is for Mid to High Handicaps, but I don't hear anyone saying if you're good at this area, use X, etc...
loved this! the stat I would love to see is lower handicap range CAT 1 in the UK- low distance 240 drive max is it really the short game that keeps them a low handicap ( basically all the data analyst say you have to hit it further to be lower) or is any other area?
Have been listening to lou for overr a year now on Hackitout. Was far, far more interesting and informative here - and letting Lou just talk - rather than on hackitout when Mark just seems to ccontinually butt in and force his opinions. Nicely facilitated guys - Lou you need to get your own podcast.
I think the low HC golfers with the best short games using a bunch of clubs vs the low HC golfers with bad short games using a couple clubs thing is kind of where knowledge of stats has to meet real life knowledge. In other words, there are plenty of single digit handicaps that slap the ball around and are only single digit handicaps because they are really good around the greens. The guys that are great ball strikers, hit the ball far, AND have great short games are on tour. I would like to know what the breakdown is like when looking at plus handicaps, that way there aren’t any short game specialists muddying up the data.
Heard this on golf channel. Using average not career best distances. For 18 holes with 4 par 5s and 4 par 3s. 18 times 7 iron distance plus 14 times driver distance plus 4 times 3 wood distance Basic math, common sense add the products up. Pick tees closest to that. I do, and it is a lot more fun, and play goes much faster.
I always say plus hcp 20 halve a set of irons will do. And a strong 5 iron is for a hcp 12 plus to difficult I learn to use the red tees more 5400 m, 6000 yds because that is 36*5 iron
Rule of thumb: If you hit a good drive on an average par 4 on a calm day and need anything longer than a 7 iron to reach the green...move up a tee. If you hit a good drive on a short par 5 and cannot get close on your second shot...move up a tee. If you can't get close with your best drive on a short par 4...move up a tee. If
weather conditions and pin locations where not mentioned? ? both play a HUGE roll in both shot/club distance and dispersion. Also if green slopes severely from back to front ….. I would rather be just short chipping uphill thrn putting straight down hill with 4 feet of break. Numbers can help but not the holy grail
Anyone else notice how driving distance on Arccos seems to be tee shot length of par 4,5 regardless of what club you hit… meanings that of you play on course with a lot of dog legs which force you to hit driver only half the time… your driving distance stat will be shorter than your average driver distance… meaning the average driving distance stat may not be a true reflection of how far average amateur actually hit it.. I carry my driver 250ish meters… but forced to tee off with 4 iron, 2 iron on a lot of the short dog leg par 4s… as a result my average driving distance is way shorter than it actually is. This isn’t me trying to say I hit the ball long… it’s more about, how accurate is the global stat used by shotscope and Arccos saying average amateur drivers X length (seems fairly low numbers)… for all other shot too… tools like this can only track total length.. not carry… so, might not be as useful as actually using a launch monitor to get carry numbers.. I do understand that these are less accessible to most tho
1.I love how often Lou gets them with their mouths open aghast at the info. 2. Can someone please get our guy Nickel some sunblock.....man's crispier than a roofer rn.
I don't think most high index golfers should play a 58 or a 60 degree wedge. A 56 is much easier, esp a cavity back. Open it open and bam, it's a 58 or 60. Biggest issue I've seen is that most weekend duffers like me are really terrible with driver. So please, lessons and fittings. 🤙🏽
I cant believe that a pga tour pro doesn’t know how much room he needs to hit a fade or draw on a golf course. I’m sorry but I come from an age where players had to figure this out for themselves and not pay someone to do it for them. Jeesh! If he can convince someone to use his services, God bless him, but wow, if you don’t know this kind of data at the pga tour level, you shouldn’t be there. What next, having someone track your club distances? Imagine how good the old masters would have been had they had this available for them!

I listen to Lou’s podcast with Mark. Dude is a wealth of knowledge
what’s the name of the pod?
Hack it out golf with Mark Crossfield
Don’t listen to that podcast if you can’t leave your ego at the door…. But if you actually want to learn something, then go ahead.

BEST interview yet. Bring Lou back
I don’t usually comment but Lou was great! Such good information and it was I interesting not boring stats like I thought it might be
I could listen to Lou’s wisdom everyday. More Lou please
This is one of the finest episodes you’ve done. I especially liked the discussion about high and low frequency brain waves, very interesting.
One of the most interesting and informative things I’ve seen. Great work. Thanks.
"Renown Golf Data Analyst" man thats way better that what that other Podcast Calls him!! Been excited for this Thanks for having him on!!
Great show could listen to this stuff all day
Thank you for the bit about the gapping at the short end of the bag. This is why I cannot understand why they do the opposite for "game improvement." Most game improvement sets have 2-3 degree differences on low loft irons and bigger and bigger gaps 5-6 degrees in the high loft irons.
Most useful golf video I've seen in a long while
By far the best video I have seen about golf. Great stuff.
Truly amazing stuff here guys. Love the content and takes from Lou

One of my favorite podcast!!! This is an an awesome episode.
Lou/Arccos the GOAT
God, I love Lou. To his comment on tees - my favorite way of determining length: Average the length of the par 3s. Whatever average is your 7 iron, play that.
Great guest, well done guys 👍
Love the concept of Arccos. Hate the stupid plug sensors. Please allow tracking via smartwatch club selection.

Enjoyed the video and also enjoy hearing Lou on the Hack It Out podcast
yip differnece is here lou was allowed to get his message out and not strangled by mark cosgrove.
I am definitely a 7 wood convert. What a club. It was actually out hitting the 5 wood and with better dispersion.
Great show! Tony describes his 7-wood like I do my 4-hybrid. It’s been my 190-195yd club for years and stupid easy to hit. I got a 3 hybrid as well but for whatever reason not as consistent 🤷🏽♂️

I imagine it’s mostly the endless repetition creating motor patterns that you don’t have to think about anymore.
@@Kaddywompous this is the correct answer
A fat j always helps my micro-focus on the course

This is soooooop good!

I would love to see a discussion about the short bags of 10 club max. 8 being the target.

When I first started listening to the hack it out podcast I thought Tony was Lou or Lou was Tony
Basically thought they were one person 🤣
I could've went for another hour of this one.
I played a season or two with a 64 deg wedge. Pretty sure I tossed it into a lake one round...

33:17 I feel attacked😂
Definitely one of the most-interesting NPG episodes ever!! Most of us need mental help on the course more than a new club being 2 yards longer
Do guests in the US not have to have an official WHS hcp then?
Learn to laugh at yourself. That’s the best way I found to lower frequency
Heard this on golf channel. Using average not career best distances. For 18 holes with 4 par 5s and 4 par 3s.
18 times 7 iron distance plus

Great video! Gold
Lou you need to add a 9 wood. Talk about something that hits itself...

I'm very good with my 60 wedge and I'm a mid handicapper(15ish). I became very good at controlling the low point for that club.

What did Lou tell you about getting in the right frame of mind after the podcast?
The Putter is the club that should not be in your bag.
Mmm 7 wood…. Could be a thing. 😬
1.I love how often Lou gets them with their mouths open aghast at the info.

That's just my natural glow. I haven't seen the outside world in several weeks.

They sell clubs the opposite. Tight gaps on the long clubs and bigger gaps on the short clubs
64 is better than 60. It's a larger number. It's obvious. 72 would be even better!
52 mins. See a case for blades in 6 and down
