Lou Stagner never intended to become the golf data guy. But with a degree in analytics and a spreadsheet that’s tracked every single one of his shots since the 1990s, he’s uniquely qualified for it. The prolific tweeter joins Tom Coyne to discuss why not all 10 handicaps are equal, why more birdies is a bad strategy, the importance of keeping your stats and plenty more number nerdiness.

What a great interview! The things that have helped my game are Arccos, The Stack System for speed training, Decade and playing with plus handicappers.

Playing with plus HC must have been intimidating to begin with?

Shooting good scores (under 75) involves mostly unremarkable shots, the thing with golf is executing unremarkable shots is difficult

      What does this mean?
Consistently shooting 72 means hitting lots of fairways and greens, which is remarkable.

@@sf_raiders_fan3520 the individual shots don’t need to be remarkable, simply hitting a fairway or green won’t make a highlight reel
You can hit a driver off the heal 220 then hit it to 40ft

Lou, could the Pros who get to the lead, by obviously playing very well (maybe with a few birdies in a row) just be reverting to their mean rather than be choking with the lead in rounds 1-3? I enjoy your stat postings, it has improved my game. Thanks!

Alternate take on the concept of the leader of a PGA tour event. It may not be pressure or that they’re performing worse BECAUSE they’re in the lead. They could simply be regressing to their mean. When anyone (besides prime tiger) is in the lead, aren’t they playing better than they usually play? Only one person in the field can string together 4 days of golf better than their mean by enough to be the winner.

It would be nice if you did a video on “how to set up a game plan” for a particular course using the yardage book. The game is so much easier if you know where you want to hit the ball and how far you want to hit it.

look at decade golf. Costs the same as a round of golf at a nice golf course and is well worth it.

I use another app to track rather than Arcos since the trackers are so frustrating. I end up with so many mis-tracked, untracked, or added strokes. And I couldn’t easily adjust it.
Please, make it so that you can track shots and the clubs you used with a smartwatch. And make it easy to adjust it during the round.

I’ve got a question.. I can’t find the odds of hitting a flagstick on a par 3 or reachable par 4 tee shot…12,500 to 1 for a hole in one and a pro odds are 2,500 to 1.. I know that… but i can’t find it for hitting the flagstick…..I’ve come up with a game ; Sqrolf; that you play golf using your feet with a hard ball(ie croquet ball)…and the whole idea is to hit a post to finish the hole…so my thinking is to reward golfers that hit a flagstick with a Sqrolfie(which is an Ace in Sqrolf)… but really what are the odds of hitting the flagstick! 😎

From what I’ve seen and my history of playing golf.. a long time now… 1 flagstick hit(Sqrolf Ace)..0 hole in one’s.. I’ll bet the odds are the same 🤔

ARCCOS is super cool and the data is very helpful. But I personally had terrible service with them. They insisted they didn’t have a certain grip when I literally had it on 3 of my clubs already. Shipped me the wrong grips on new clubs and then wanted me to send me clubs back for 8 weeks instead of them just sending me the grips where I would pay for them to be put on. Sensors also throw off your swing weight because the grips get heavier and longer. Had to ditch them because the support was so poor.

If you can putt, you should be putting
If you have to chip, get really good with you highest lofted club. Learn to spin and stop it.
